Abstract:Acoustic Gas Thermometry (AGT),is one of the most accurate methods for measuring thermodynamic temperature. Here one measures the thermodynamic temperature by determing the speed of sound in a monatomic gas via the resonance frequencies of a cavity of known dimensions.Piezo-ceramic transducers have been shown to give better signal-to-noise ratio than commonly used capacitive microphones. For the longitudinal acoustic modes of the cylindrical resonator, the amplitudes and the signal-to-noise ratios increase with increasing driving voltage applied to the PZT transducer.According to our studies, neither the measured resonant frequencies nor the half-widths would appear to be influenced by the amplitude of the driving voltages.Random errors of the resonant frequencies decreased for increasing driving voltages for gas pressures below 150 kPa;for higher pressures, however,no such decrease was apparent. This study has helped improve the accuracy of thermodynamic temperature measurements by AGT using a fixed-path cylindrical resonator.
