Abstract:AI-based systems are software systems with functionalities enabled by at least one AI component (e.g., for image-, speech-recognition, and autonomous driving). AI-based systems are becoming pervasive in society due to advances in AI. However, there is limited synthesized knowledge on Software Engineering (SE) approaches for building, operating, and maintaining AI-based systems. To collect and analyze state-of-the-art knowledge about SE for AI-based systems, we conducted a systematic mapping study. We considered 248 studies published between January 2010 and March 2020. SE for AI-based systems is an emerging research area, where more than 2/3 of the studies have been published since 2018. The most studied properties of AI-based systems are dependability and safety. We identified multiple SE approaches for AI-based systems, which we classified according to the SWEBOK areas. Studies related to software testing and software quality are very prevalent, while areas like software maintenance seem neglected. Data-related issues are the most recurrent challenges. Our results are valuable for: researchers, to quickly understand the state-of-the-art and learn which topics need more research; practitioners, to learn about the approaches and challenges that SE entails for AI-based systems; and, educators, to bridge the gap among SE and AI in their curricula.

Abstract:Over the last ten years, the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has experienced an explosion of revolutionary breakthroughs, transforming what seemed like a far-off dream into a reality that is now deeply embedded in our everyday lives. AI's widespread impact is revolutionizing virtually all aspects of human life, and software engineering (SE) is no exception. As we explore this changing landscape, we are faced with questions about what the future holds for SE and how AI will reshape the roles, duties, and methodologies within the field. The introduction of these groundbreaking technologies highlights the inevitable shift towards a new paradigm, suggesting a future where AI's capabilities may redefine the boundaries of SE, potentially even more than human input. In this paper, we aim at outlining the key elements that, based on our expertise, are vital for the smooth integration of AI into SE, all while preserving the intrinsic human creativity that has been the driving force behind the field. First, we provide a brief description of SE and AI evolution. Afterward, we delve into the intricate interplay between AI-driven automation and human innovation, exploring how these two components can work together to advance SE practices to new methods and standards.

Abstract:As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in daily life, designing intuitive, trustworthy, and emotionally resonant AI-human interfaces has emerged as a critical challenge. This editorial introduces a Special Issue that explores the psychology of AI experience design, focusing on how interfaces can foster seamless collaboration between humans and machines. Drawing on insights from diverse fields (healthcare, consumer technology, workplace dynamics, and cultural sector), the papers in this collection highlight the complexities of trust, transparency, and emotional sensitivity in human-AI interaction. Key themes include designing AI systems that align with user perceptions and expectations, overcoming resistance through transparency and trust, and framing AI capabilities to reduce user anxiety. By synthesizing findings from eight diverse studies, this editorial underscores the need for AI interfaces to balance efficiency with empathy, addressing both functional and emotional dimensions of user experience. Ultimately, it calls for actionable frameworks to bridge research and practice, ensuring that AI systems enhance human lives through thoughtful, human-centered design.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) and software engineering (SE) are two important areas in computer science. In recent years, researchers are trying to apply AI techniques in various stages of software development to improve the overall quality of software products. Moreover, there are also some researchers focus on the intersection between SE and AI. In fact, the relationship between SE and AI is very weak; however, methods and techniques in one area have been adopted in another area. More and more software products are capable of performing intelligent behaviour like human beings. In this paper, two cases studies which are IBM Watson and Google AlphaGo that use different AI techniques in solving real world challenging problems have been analysed, evaluated and compared. Based on the analysis of both case studies, using AI techniques such as deep learning and machine learning in software systems contributes to intelligent systems. Watson adopts 'decision making support' strategy to help human make decisions; whereas AlphaGo uses 'self-decision making' to choose operations that contribute to the best outcome. In addition, Watson learns from man-made resources such as paper; AlphaGo, on the other hand, learns from massive online resources such as photos. AlphaGo uses neural networks and reinforcement learning to mimic human brain, which might be very useful in medical research for diagnosis and treatment. However, there is still a long way to go if we want to reproduce human brain in machine and view computers as thinkers, because human brain and machines are intrinsically different. It would be more promising to see whether computers and software systems will become more and more intelligent to help with real world challenging problems that human beings cannot do.

Abstract:As Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have become more powerful and easier to use they are increasingly deployed as key components of modern software systems. While this enables new functionality and often allows better adaptation to user needs it also creates additional problems for software engineers and exposes companies to new risks. Some work has been done to better understand the interaction between Software Engineering and AI but we lack methods to classify ways of applying AI in software systems and to analyse and understand the risks this poses. Only by doing so can we devise tools and solutions to help mitigate them. This paper presents the AI in SE Application Levels (AI-SEAL) taxonomy that categorises applications according to their point of AI application, the type of AI technology used and the automation level allowed. We show the usefulness of this taxonomy by classifying 15 papers from previous editions of the RAISE workshop. Results show that the taxonomy allows classification of distinct AI applications and provides insights concerning the risks associated with them. We argue that this will be important for companies in deciding how to apply AI in their software applications and to create strategies for its use.

Abstract:In this 4-page manuscript we discuss the problem of long-term AI Safety from a Software Engineering (SE) research viewpoint. We briefly summarize long-term AI Safety, and the challenge of avoiding harms from AI as systems meet or exceed human capabilities, including software engineering capabilities (and approach AGI / "HLMI"). We perform a quantified literature review suggesting that AI Safety discussions are not common at SE venues. We make conjectures about how software might change with rising capabilities, and categorize "subproblems" which fit into traditional SE areas, proposing how work on similar problems might improve the future of AI and SE.

Towards AI-Native Software Engineering (SE 3.0): A Vision and a Challenge Roadmap

Abstract:The rise of AI-assisted software engineering (SE 2.0), powered by Foundation Models (FMs) and FM-powered copilots, has shown promise in improving developer productivity. However, it has also exposed inherent limitations, such as cognitive overload on developers and inefficiencies. We propose a shift towards Software Engineering 3.0 (SE 3.0), an AI-native approach characterized by intent-first, conversation-oriented development between human developers and AI teammates. SE 3.0 envisions AI systems evolving beyond task-driven copilots into intelligent collaborators, capable of deeply understanding and reasoning about software engineering principles and intents. We outline the key components of the SE 3.0 technology stack, which includes <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Teammate.next" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> for adaptive and personalized AI partnership, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://IDE.next" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> for intent-first conversation-oriented development, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Compiler.next" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> for multi-objective code synthesis, and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Runtime.next" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> for SLA-aware execution with edge-computing support. Our vision addresses the inefficiencies and cognitive strain of SE 2.0 by fostering a symbiotic relationship between human developers and AI, maximizing their complementary strengths. We also present a roadmap of challenges that must be overcome to realize our vision of SE 3.0. This paper lays the foundation for future discussions on the role of AI in the next era of software engineering.

Abstract:To reduce human efforts and burden on human intelligence in software-engineering activities, Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have been employed to assist or automate these activities. On the other hand, human's domain knowledge can serve as starting points for designing AI techniques. Furthermore, the results of AI techniques are often interpreted or verified by human users. Such user feedback could be incorporated to further improve the AI techniques, forming a continuous feedback loop. We recently proposed cooperative testing and analysis including human-tool cooperation (consisting of human-assisted computing and human-centric computing) and human-human cooperation. In this paper, we present example software-engineering problems with solutions that leverage the synergy of human and artificial intelligence, and illustrate how cooperative testing and analysis can help realize such synergy.

Abstract:The continuously expanding urban environment introduces a significant amount of both physical and digital infrastructure. The accompanying solution that collects environmental big data through the Internet of Things (IoT) holds great promise, opening up new opportunities as well as challenges. On one hand, billions of sensors and devices continuously collect, process, and transmit data. The data volume poses the challenge for supporting the decision-making in an automatic and intelligent way. On the other hand, the dynamism of data, the complexity of the environment, and the diversity of tasks also set the barrier to the intelligent processing paradigm of smart infrastructure. Abstract:This editorial aims to present the papers accepted for the special issue (SI) 'Industry experiences of Artificial Intelligence (AI): benefits and challenges in operations and supply chain management.' First, we provide a brief introduction considering the relationship between AI and operations and supply chain management (OSCM) by highlighting some companies already using and practical insights. In sequence, we introduce the papers selected for the SI. The last section gives some intriguing and challenging research directions for scholars and industry practitioners by highlighting potential topics, research opportunities, and possible benefits. Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around for a long time, but it's only recently become a mainstream concern. When it comes to cutting-edge research and development, At the moment, AI is at the top of the list. Over the next few decades, we will see a rise in the use of automated and cognitive technology. To be sure, this will occur. This study and related discourse focuses on identifying and discussing potential AI development inflection points. It also considers issues like technological unemployment, which could arise as a result of AI development in the future and affect job prospects in a wide range of industries. This paper also looks at the ethical and policy issues that might come up as AI gets better. Companies today need to be able to effectively manage both human workers and automated systems. There will be significant changes to software engineers' roles. Therefore, we need to reimagine the delivery of education so that it can prepare the next generation for a world with very different requirements than the one in which we currently find ourselves. Furthermore, there should be regulations in place. AI applications can only accurately represent a small, biased fraction of the world if only a few people have access to them. The work of researchers is important to make sure that AI is developed and used to help people and not to harm them.

The goal is to understand how AI technologies may advance the design process, encourage innovation, and produce more individualized and user-centric solutions. This study intends to shed light on the potential of AI as a catalyst for creativity and the ethical implications of AI-driven design by discovering overlapping ideas and methodologies between design thinking and AI. According to the research, AI can significantly influence the design process by eliminating tedious processes, improving user-centricity, and stimulating creativity. AI may support designers' decision-making, prototyping, and ideation processes, resulting in more creative and effective design solutions. Addressing bias in AI algorithms and data privacy is imperative to ensure ethical AI integration. Virtual reality, bio-design, and inclusive design are untapped areas where AI can be used.
