Abstract:The cylindrical ion trap (CIT) is an alternative to the quadrupole ion trap. The latter has electrodes of hyperbolic cross-section, while the CIT consists of a cylindrical ring electrode and two flat endcap electrodes. Principally used for ion storage and recently operated in the standard mass-selective instability scan mode, the CIT has shown adequate performance as a mass analyzer displaying unit mass resolution, MS n capabilities and good sensitivity. Most important, the CIT is an attractive miniaturize mass analyzer due to the ease of machining. Previous experiments, calculations and simulations have shown that the relative strengths of the quadrupolar and higher-order electric fields have a significant effect on the performance of the CIT and that they can be varied by changing its geometry. 1-5 In this work, a systematic study has been done to explore the optimization of CIT performance by variation of the geometry.
