Abstract:Recently increased interest in detecting and quantifying toxic gas phase species has spurred the development of small, highly portable analytical instrumentation that can operate outside the laboratory. Ideally, such instrumentation would have high sensitivity, low limits of detection, provide specific chemical information about targeted compounds to achieve high selectivity, be hand-held and readily portable, with acceptable operation time on battery power, and provide good temporal resolution in its response to gas phase analytes. Devices with these characteristics might be employed by first responders (police and firefighters) or military personnel in response to chemical spills, acts of terrorism, or chemical attacks on the battlefield. Peacetime uses for such equipment include monitoring of air quality in urban areas, airliner cabins, and industrial settings.
