Abstract:A method based on thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD GC -MS) was developed for the simultaneous analysis of 67 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air. In this study, the adsorption effects of five kinds of stainless steel sorbent tubes for 78 VOCs were compared. The results revealed that a multisorbent bed with Carbograph 1TD and Tenax TA shows good adsorption effect for the 67 target compounds. The breakthrough rates of all the target compounds were less than 10% when high-purity helium gas was continuously purged for 45 min at 30 mL/min. The analytes included aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, and oxygen-containing volatile organic compounds. The thermal desorption conditions for the determination of the target substances were optimized. In the range 5 -100 ng, the chromatographic response of the target compounds had a good linear relationship with their corresponding amounts, and the correlation coefficient (r) was between 1. 000 0 and 0. 997 7. The method detection limits ( MDLs) were 0. 3-2. 4 ng or 0. 3 -2. 4 mu g/m(3), as calculated by a 1 L sampling volume. The method was validated by means of recovery experiments (n =7) with the addition of 20 ng standard samples. The recoveries of all the target compounds were in the range of 81. 6% -114. 9%, and their relative standard deviations (RSDs) were in the range of 1. 2%-10. 2%. The VOCs present in the air in a carriage were detected using this method. The 19 target compounds included esters, halogenated alkanes, halogenated olefins, and aromatic substances, whose concentrations ranged from 1. 1 to 84. 1 g/m3. These results indicated that our method is accurate, reliable, and sensitive, and can allow for accurate quantification of the 67 target pollutants in ambient air.

Abstract:The scientific foundation for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) measurements in water, soils, sediments, biosolids, biota, and outdoor air has rapidly expanded; however, there are limited efforts devoted to developing analytical methods to measure vapor-phase PFAS in indoor air. A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method coupled with thermal desorption (TD) sorbent tube analysis was developed to quantify trace levels of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) emitted from consumer products in the indoor environment. Method evaluation included determination of instrument detection limits (IDLs), quality assurance checks of target standards purchased from different vendors, sample loss during storage, and TD sorbent breakthrough with tubes coupled in-series. The IDLs for TD-GC-MS/MS analyses ranged from 0.07 – 0.09 ng/tube. No significant loss of FTOHs was observed during stability tests over 28 days with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of spiked TD tubes ranging from 3.1 – 7.7% and the RSDs of polypropylene copolymer vial storage of standard solutions ranging from 4.3 – 8.4%. TD tube breakthrough was minimal with recovered FTOHs in the second tubes <1% of the spiked concentrations in the first tubes with carrier gas volume up to 20 L. The method has been applied to determine FTOH emissions from three consumer products in micro-scale chambers. A liquid stone cleaner/sealer product contained the highest levels of 6:2, 8:2, and 10:2 FTOHs, while the mattress pad products contained lower levels of 8:2 and 10:2 FTOHs. The emission parameters, including the initial emission factors and first order decay rate constants, were obtained based on the experimental data. The developed methods are sensitive and specific for analysis of all four target FTOHs (4:2, 6:2, 8:2, 10:2 FTOHs) with chamber testing. The methods can be extended to indoor air sampling and could be applicable to ambient air sampling.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a group of ubiquitous environment pollutants especially released into the workplace. Assessment of VOCs exposure in occupational populations is therefore a crucial issue for occupational health. However, simultaneous biomonitoring of a variety of VOCs is less studied. In this study, a simple and sensitive method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 51 prototype VOCs in urine by headspace-thermal desorption coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-TD-GC-MS). The urinary sample was pretreated with only adding 0.50 g of sodium chloride to 2 mL of urine and 51 VOCs should be determined with limits of detection (LODs) between 13.6 ng/L and 24.5 ng/L. The method linearity ranged from 0.005 to 10 μg/L with correlation coefficients (r) of 0.991 to 0.999. The precision for intraday and inter-day, measured by the variation coefficient (CV) at three levels of concentration, was below 15 %, except for 4-isopropyl toluene, dichloromethane, and trichloromethane at low concentration. For medium and high levels, recoveries of all target VOCs were within the standard range, but 1,1-dichloropropene and styrene, which were slightly under 80 % at low levels. In addition, the proposed method has been used to determine urine samples collected in three times (before, during and after working) from 152 workers at four different factories. 41 types of prototype VOCs were detected in workers urine. Significant differences (Kruskal-Wallis chi-squared = 117.18, df = 1, P < 0.05) in the concentration levels of VOCs between the exposed and unexposed groups were observed, but not between the three sampling times (Kruskal-Wallis chi-squared = 3.39, df = 2, P = 0.183). The present study provides an alternative method for biomonitoring and assessing mixed exposures to VOCs in occupational populations.

Abstract:High-throughput screening of samples is the strategy of choice to detect occupational exposure biomarkers, yet it requires a user-friendly apparatus that gives relatively prompt results while ensuring high degrees of selectivity, precision, accuracy and automation, particularly in the preparation process. Miniaturization has attracted much attention in analytical chemistry and has driven solvent and sample savings as easier automation, the latter thanks to the introduction on the market of the three axis autosampler. In light of the above, this contribution describes a novel user-friendly solid-phase microextraction (SPME) off- and on-line platform coupled with gas chromatography and triple quadrupole-mass spectrometry to determine urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons 1- and 2-hydroxy-naphthalene, 9-hydroxy-phenanthrene, 1-hydroxy-pyrene, 3- and 9-hydroxy-benzoantracene, and 3-hydroxy-benzo[a]pyrene. In this new procedure, chromatography's sensitivity is combined with the user-friendliness of N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide on-fiber SPME derivatization using direct immersion sampling; moreover, specific isotope-labelled internal standards provide quantitative accuracy. The detection limits for the seven OH-PAHs ranged from 0.25 to 4.52 ng/L. Intra-(from 2.5 to 3.0%) and inter-session (from 2.4 to 3.9%) repeatability was also evaluated. This method serves to identify suitable risk-control strategies for occupational hygiene conservation programs.

Abstract:A method of comprehensive screening of the target and non-target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial exhaust gas using thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) has been developed. In this paper, two types of solid phase adsorption column were compared, and the Tenex SS TD Tube was selected. The analytes were enriched into the adsorption tube by constant flow sampling, and detected by TD-GC-MS in full scan mode. Target compounds were quantified by internal standard method, and the quantities of non-target compounds were calculated by response coefficient of toluene. The method detection limits (MDLs) for the 24 VOCs were 1.06 to 5.44 ng, and MDLs could also be expressed as 0.004 to 0.018 mg/m3 assuming that the sampling volume was 300 mL. The average recoveries were in the range of 78.4% to 89.4% with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 3.9% to 14.4% (n=7). The established analytical method was applied for the comprehensive screening of VOCs in a waste incineration power plant in Dalian city. Twenty-nine VOCs were identified. In these compounds, only five VOCs were the target compounds set in advance, which accounted for 26.7% of the total VOCs identified. Therefore, this study further proved the importance of screening non-target compounds in the analysis of VOCs in industrial exhaust gas, and has certain reference significance for the complete determination of VOCs distribution.
Occupational exposure to organotin substances. Development of a liquid chromatographic separation method for 11 organotin compounds in workplace air samples via HPLC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Organotin compounds (OTCs) are widely regulated but rank among the most used organometallic compounds in various industrial sectors. They are significantly more toxic than inorganic tin compounds. At workplaces, OTCs can be released as vapors or dust particles and can be absorbed by inhalation or skin contact. Occupational exposure thus represents a great risk for the absorption of OTCs for employees. Methods for OTCs speciation in workplace air monitoring currently do not exist. This study describes the development of a separation method for eleven in Germany regulated OTCs via HPLC-ICP-MS. The method allows a near baseline separation of MMT, MBT, MOT, MPhT, DMT, DBT, DPhT, TMT, TBT, TPhT and TTMT within 22 minutes on a C18 column and a ternary solvent and flow rate gradient using methanol, acetonitrile, and ultrapure water + 6 % (v/v) acetic acid + 0.17 % (m/v) α-tropolone. Ten analytes show linearity in the working range of 10 - 100 μg OTCs/L with R2 > 0.999. Due to its high volatility the analyte TTMT showed a quadratic relationship between concentration and signal intensity with R2 = 0.9998. The determination of the instrumental limits resulted in detection limits between 0.14 and 0.57 μg Sn/L and limits of quantification between 0.49 and 1.97 μg Sn/L. Over the course of this study thermal instability and cross reactivity of OTC in solution became apparent. Formation of two reaction products in mixed OTCs solutions have been observed. These effects will further be examined within development of appropriate sampling and sample preparation for workplace air to provide a suitable method for the determination of OTCs at workplaces according to normative references.

Abstract:We describe a new approach for the determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at precise locations in the air using active sampling on sorbent tubes outfitted to an inexpensive multicopter and analysis by thermal desorption (TD) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The aerial sampling method permits for the simultaneous collection of multiple air samples on separate TD tubes concurrently, increasing sample throughput compared to single canister sampling. Furthermore, the method is relatively inexpensive when compared to similar approaches, with overall costs below about $2000 (U.S. dollars). To demonstrate applicability, we measured VOCs at several heights near anthropogenic sources in the mid-south USA, including a municipal landfill, petroleum refinery, and a coal-fired power plant (CFPP), and within the canopy of a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) forest. Concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) were higher (p < 0.05) downwind of the refinery and CFPP compared to upwind. We observed both a unique mixture of VOCs at each site and higher concentrations of abundant VOCs downwind compared to upwind of the point sources and within versus above the forest canopy. Overall, this feasibility study demonstrates that highly maneuverable multicopters can be used to probe VOC concentrations aloft and thus have great potential to be utilized in unique sampling situations and for vertical profiling.
A wide range of toxic VOCs measured by dual-sorbent passive sampling with validation by field online measurements

Abstract:This study modified a passive sampling technique similar to the US EPA Method 325 A/B method but extended to include more toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under varied climate conditions to enhance field applicability. A mixing chamber was built to determine uptake rates (Us) for the target compounds. It was found that the Us of 27 air toxics previously reported in the literature agreed reasonably well with our findings within 18%, thus proving the chamber's integrity. To broaden the compound coverage, both Carbopack X and Carboxen 569 were studied for a suite of toxic VOCs to meet stringent quality control (QC) criteria of correlation coefficients (R-square), method detection limits (MDL), back diffusion (BD), storage stability, as well as a wide range of climate conditions in temperature and humidity. After excluding the species that failed to pass any of the QC criteria, Carbopack X was found to fit 50 air toxics, whereas Carboxen 569 held 37. After excluding the overlapped species, 61 toxic VOCs can be determined with robust Us for a broad range of climate conditions when the two sorbents are used in pairs. A one-week field measurement was conducted to compare with the online thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) with hourly data resolution. The field passive sampling showed comparable results to the means of the online hourly measurements, despite the high variability of selected target compounds, such as toluene from 0.3 ppbv as the 5th percentile to the maximum of about 80 ppbv. Passive sampling clearly demonstrated the ability to smooth out concentration variability and thus the time-averaging strength of toxic VOCs, revealing its ideal role as an exposure monitor over time. The passive sampling method can be more desired than active sampling or online methods when the aim is simply the knowledge of prolonged time-averaged concentrations.

Abstract:The amidine organocatalyst 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) is an effective nucleophilic catalyst. Biocomposites with tuneable properties were successfully synthesized by ring-opening graft polymerization (ROGP) of propylene carbonate (PC) onto xylan using DBU as a catalyst in the ionic liquid (IL) 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Amim]Cl). The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and the molar ratio of PC to anhydroxylose units (AXU) in xylan were investigated. The physico-chemical properties of xylan-graft-poly(propylene carbonate) (xylan-g-PPC) copolymers were characterised by FT-IR, NMR, TGA/DTG, AFM and tensile analysis. The FT-IR and NMR results indicated the successful attachment of PPC onto xylan. TGA/DTG suggested the increased thermal stability of xylan after the attachment of PPC side chains. AFM analysis revealed details about the molecular aggregation of xylan-g-PPC films. The results also showed that with the increased DS of xylan-g-PPC copolymers, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the films decreased, while the elongation at break increased.
Quantitative Analysis of Indoor Gaseous Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds Using Solid-Phase Microextraction: Active Sampling and Calibration

Abstract:Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are important pollutants in indoor environments. Quantification of gaseous SVOC concentrations is essential to assess the pollution levels. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is considered to be an attractive sampling technique with merits, including simplicity of use, rapid sampling, and solvent free. However, the applications of SPME for sampling gaseous SVOCs are often limited by the fluctuating velocity of indoor air (leading to an unstable sampling rate) and the uncertainties associated with the traditional calibration of SPME. Therefore, we established an SPME-based active sampler to ensure the stable sampling of SVOCs in fluctuating air and developed a two-step calibration method based on the sampling principle of SPME. The presented method and a traditional method (sorbent tubes packed with Tenax TA) were simultaneously used to measure SVOC concentrations in an airstream generated in experiments. Three typical indoor SVOCs, diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBzP) were chosen as the analytes. Mean concentrations measured by SPME agreed well with the sorbent tubes (relative deviations <12%), supporting the feasibility of the presented method. Further studies are expected to facilitate the application of the presented method (especially the problem associated with the sampling-tube loss of low volatile SVOCs).

Abstract:Thermal desorption (TD) coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) is a simple alternative that overcomes the main drawbacks of the solvent extraction-based method: long extraction times, high sample manipulation, and large amounts of solvent waste. This work describes the optimization of TD-GC/MS for the measurement of airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particulate phase. The performance of the method was tested by Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1649b urban dust and compared with the conventional method (Soxhlet extraction-GC/MS), showing a better recovery (mean of 97%), precision (mean of 12%), and accuracy (±25%) for the determination of 14 EPA PAHs. Furthermore, other 15 nonpriority PAHs were identified and quantified using their relative response factors (RRFs). Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for the quantification of PAHs in real 8 h-samples (PM 10 ), demonstrating its capability for determination of these compounds in short-term monitoring.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are air pollutants that affect the human health and the environment, and their accurate determination in outdoor and indoor environments is important. This study presents a methodology for sampling and analysis of semi-volatile compounds in ambient air with emphasis on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, collected with low-volume pumps (4.8 m3) in unconditioned solid phase extraction cartridges (Isolute ENV+). Sampling in SPE cartridges with low-volume pumps allows the collection of both gas and particulate phase compounds in indoor as well as outdoor environments, and reduces the number of extraction steps required as well as the solvent volume used for extraction. Analysis of the 16 US-EPA priority PAHs after extraction was conducted by GC-MS/MS with recoveries of the PAHs 40-118 %. No breakthrough was detected during sampling. Moreover, the methodology includes storage test to assess the conservation of PAHs in the SPE cartridges in heat-sealable Kapac bags; simulating transport from sampling sites to laboratory, and storage under room, cold and frozen conditions at different time-intervals, up to 3 months after sampling. The results showed that concentration levels remained constant across various storage time intervals and temperatures, with naphthalene and acenaphthylene being the only exceptions, showing high blank levels for the first and losses at room temperature for the later. The method quantification limits, including sampling, storage and GC-MS/MS analysis ranged from 2000 pg m-3 for naphthalene and 300 pg m-3 for phenanthrene to less than 20.0 pg m-3 for higher molecular and less volatile PAHs, such as benzo[a]pyrene (LOQ = 8.0 pg m-3). The feasibility of the method was tested by sampling indoors under urban background air conditions, showing individual PAH concentrations 4 to 10 times higher than their method quantification limits.
Evaluation of a portable gas chromatograph with photoionization detector under variations of VOC concentration, temperature, and relative humidity

Abstract:The objective of this present study was to evaluate the performance of a portable gas chromatograph-photoionization detector (GC-PID), under various test conditions to determine if it could be used in occupational settings. A mixture of 7 volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-acetone, ethylbenzene, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and o-xylene-was selected because its components are commonly present in paint manufacturing industries. A full-factorial combination of 4 concentration levels (exposure scenarios) of VOC mixtures, 3 different temperatures (25°C, 30°C, and 35°C), and 3 relative humidities (RHs; 25%, 50%, and 75%) was conducted in a full-size controlled environmental chamber. Three repetitions were conducted for each test condition allowing for estimation of accuracy. Time-weighted average exposure data were collected using solid sorbent tubes (Anasorb 747, SKC Inc.) as the reference sampling medium. Calibration curves of Frog-4000 using the dry gases showed R2 > 0.99 for all analytes except for toluene (R2 = 0.97). Frog-4000 estimates within a test condition showed good consistency for the performance of repeated measurement. However, there was ∼41-64% reduction in the analysis of polar acetone with 75% RH relative to collection at 25% RH. Although Frog-4000 results correlated well with solid sorbent tubes (r = 0.808-0.993, except for toluene) most of the combinations regardless of analyte did not meet the <25% accuracy criterion recommended by NIOSH. The effect of chromatographic co-elution can be seen with m, p-xylene when the results are compared to the sorbent tube sampling technique with GC-flame ionization detector. The results indicated an effect of humidity on the quantification of the polar compounds that might be attributed to the pre-concentrator placed in the selected GC-PID. Further investigation may resolve the humidity effect on sorbent trap with micro GC pre-concentrator when water vapor is present. Although this instrument does not fulfill the accuracy criterion specified in the NIOSH technical report No. 2012-162, it can be used as a screening tool for range finding monitoring with dry gases calibration in the occupational setting rather than compliance monitoring.

Abstract:The low level detection of air pollutants requires reliable sampling and calibration techniques, as well as using sophisticated analytical instrumentation. Incorporating these requirements into a mobile platform allows for accurate, curb side measurement of airborne ambient chemicals in real time. In this case study, air emissions from two manufacturing facilities in close proximity to each other were monitored with a mobile unit to chemically characterize and differentiate the emissions from each facility. Based upon the downwind fingerprinting and concentration levels, the mobile unit was able to isolate the source of the emissions to the responsible facility. A few chemicals which were detected by the TAGA had never been reported by the companies. Real time proximity monitoring was accomplished by using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (TAGA IIe). The TAGA IIe interfaces with a low pressure chemical ionization source that operates at 3 Torr and 100 microA. By monitoring the response of specific parent/daughter ion pairs, the TAGA IIe unit was able to determine the point-of-impingement concentrations of styrene and other ambient airborne chemicals. Positive identification and quantitation of styrene was accomplished by multiple measurements of the following ion pairs: 104/78, 104/77, 104/65 and 104/52. By optimizing various parameters of the TAGA IIe a method detection limit of 1.1 microg/m(3) was achieved for styrene. A daily multi-point calibration was performed using a liquid standard. The maximum half-hour average concentration of styrene measured downwind of the two facilities was 2300 microg/m(3) and the maximum instantaneous level was measured at 15,000 microg/m(3). The mobile capability of the unit was also utilized in determining the ambient airborne concentration of styrene at various distances from the companies with the maximum levels measured at close proximity to the emission sources.

Abstract:Volatile halogenated compounds (VHCs) are important industrial chemicals and play a crucial role in potential stratospheric ozone-depletion and global warming. Profiling of VHCs is of great significance but replete with challenges due to the species' richness and diversity. In this study, we developed a novel method employing water removal mode combined with thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) for on-line measurement of VHCs at the ultratrace level. By removing water with Nafion dryer tandem cold trap device, VHCs could achieve better separation and identification, and detection precision of VHCs lower than 10%. The proposed method exhibited limits of detection for VHCs ranging from 0.1 to 6.2 pptv. Benefiting from the improved trapping efficiency due to water removal, we successfully quantified 34 VHCs at the Shangdianzi background station and achieved a comprehensive assessment of VHCs in ambient air.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated derivatives (XPAHs) have been a concern because of their high toxicity. Monitoring indoor PAHs and XPAHs concentrations is important for risk assessment because humans typically spend >90 % of their time indoors. However, the background levels of indoor PAHs and XPAHs concentrations are unknown because of the low sensitivity of conventional analytical methods. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method using a thermal separation probe (TSP) coupled to a gas chromatograph with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer method for 26 PAHs and 40 XPAHs. The method quantification limit (MQL) values of the TSP method were 1.1 (3,8-dichlorofluoranthene)-906 (dibenzo[a,e]pyrene) times lower than those of the conventional method. The regression line comparing the TSP and conventional methods was y = (0.944 ± 0.0401)x, which was in good agreement. These results demonstrate that the TSP method can be applied to indoor air analysis. The total concentrations of PAHs and XPAHs were 944 and 73.5 pg m-3 for the house and 735 and 0.924 pg m-3 in the office, respectively. Among the detected compounds, 13 PAHs and XPAHs could not be detected using conventional methods because of their high MQL values. The composition of total toxicity equivalency values in the house was dominated by dibenzo[a,i]pyrene (DBaiP: 43.2 %) and dibenzo[a,h]pyrene (DBahP: 27.1 %), which could not be detected using the conventional method. Therefore, the TSP method can improve the risk assessment of indoor PAHs and XPAHs.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in petroleum based products and are combustion by-products of organic matters. Determination of levels of PAHs in the indoor environment is important for assessing human exposure to these chemicals. A new short path thermal desorption (SPTD) gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method for determining levels of PAHs in indoor air was developed. Thermal desorption (TD) tubes packed with glass beads, Carbopack C, and Carbopack B in sequence, were used for sample collection. Indoor air was sampled using a small portable pump over 7 days at 100ml/min. Target PAHs were thermally released and introduced into the GC/MS for analysis through the SPTD unit. During tube desorption, PAHs were cold trapped (-20°C) at the front end of the GC column. Thermal desorption efficiencies were 100% for PAHs with 2 and 3 rings, and 99-97% for PAHs with 4-6 rings. Relative standard deviation (RSD) values among replicate samples spiked at three different levels were around 10-20%. The detection limit of this method was at or below 0.1μg/m3 except for naphthalene (0.61μg/m3), fluorene (0.28μg/m3) and phenanthrene (0.35μg/m3). This method was applied to measure PAHs in indoor air in nine residential homes. The levels of PAHs in indoor air found in these nine homes are similar to indoor air values reported by others.

Abstract:The quantitative composition of white spirit vapours in workplace air may differ considerably from the solvent being used, although all components are the same. By calculating the hygienic effect from the threshold limit value (NGV) of each component, a more reliable estimate is obtained of the occupational hazard than by using the NGV for white spirit. In this method the analyses were performed by on-column injection onto a temperature-programmed capillary column. Retention indices based on n-paraffins and isooctane were calculated using spline functions. Index tables were established for different hydrocarbon mixtures. The validity of the retention indices was found to be satisfactory, depending on the stability of the column and the possibility of optimizing the indices when replacing one column by another of the same type and dimensions. Comparisons were made with alternative methods for determining the concentration of white spirit vapours in air samples. A polar column was used to check the total content of aromatics.
