Abstract:High-temperature molten salt research is undergoing somewhat of a renaissance these days due to the apparent advantage of these systems in areas related to clean and sustainable energy harvesting and transfer. In many ways, this is a mature field with decades if not already a century of outstanding work devoted to it. Yet, much of this work was done with pioneering experimental and computational setups that lack the current day capabilities of synchrotrons and high-performance-computing systems resulting in deeply entrenched results in the literature that when carefully inspected may require revision. Yet, in other cases, access to isotopically substituted ions make those pioneering studies very unique and prohibitively expensive to carry out nowadays. There are many review articles on molten salts, some of them cited in this perspective, that are simply outstanding and we dare not try to outdo those. Instead, having worked for almost a couple of decades already on their low-temperature relatives, the ionic liquids, this is the perspective article that some of the authors would have wanted to read when embarking on their research journey on high-temperature molten salts. We hope that this will serve as a simple guide to those expanding from research on ionic liquids to molten salts and <i>vice versa</i>, particularly, when looking into their bulk structural features. The article does not aim at being comprehensive but instead focuses on selected topics such as short- and intermediate-range order, the constraints on force field requirements, and other details that make the high- and low-temperature ionic melts in some ways similar but in others diametrically opposite.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Molten salts have been used for many centuries in metal extraction, glass manufacture, and, more recently, in applications such as fused salt electrolysis. Usually dissociated into ions, they are often good solvents for oxides, carbides, nitrides, and metals. Their high thermal stability, low vapor pressure, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and low viscosity may be expected to confer on them an increasing technological importance in the future, and as a result research on their physical and chemical properties has grown markedly in recent years. Thermodynamic and transport properties [l-41 have been surveyed within the last decade, and Sundermeyer [5] has also reviewed their use as reaction media. A selection of catalytic reactions has been discussed by Kenney [6].

Abstract:Abstract Molten salt is a type of material for high temperature thermal energy storage. The thermophysical property, thermostability, and corrosion performance of molten salt are the main points of interest in thermal energy storage field. How to further broaden the usage temperature range of molten salt, develop more molten salts with low melting points, and optimize the thermal conductivity and viscosity of materials has been widely concerned by researchers. Recently, thermal storage technology of molten salt has been applied to the field of concentrating solar power. The thermophysical property, and corrosive performance of molten salt are very important for the large-scale preparation and application of molten salt materials. Based on the classification of molten salt materials, this paper reviews the thermophysical properties of some common molten salts (carbonate, chloride, nitrate, polybasic salt, etc.), and summarizes the current research progress of improving its thermophysical properties. Moreover, the corrosive performance of several types of commonly used molten salts in thermal energy storage applications is analyzed. Besides, some corrosion protection technologies are proposed according to the current application of molten salt and the corrosion mechanism. Finally, the development trend of the application of molten salt in the field of heat storage is prospected.

Abstract:Mixed molten salts are considered as promising media for both heat transfer and thermal energy storage because of several advantages including wide applicable temperature range, low viscosity, good fluidity, low vapor pressure, relatively high density and heat capacity and low cost,This paper outlines the principle of the use of molten salts as sensible heat storage materials and provide a review of the state-of-the-art development the materials. Particular attention is drawn on the type and characteristic of commonly molten salt, technical principle, development status of key technologies such as molten salt heat storage medium and equipment and application in solar thermal power generation and intermittent of waste heat utilization. It is concluded that preparing and researching thermal or flowing properties high temperature molten salt, perfevting the molten salt heat storage system, improving heat storage efficiency, weakening corrosivity and improving the system reliability are among the important aspects for future research.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Molten salt is an excellent medium for chemical reaction, energy transfer, and storage. Molten salt innovative technologies should be developed to recover metals from secondary resources and reserve metals from primary natural sources. Among these technologies, molten salt electrolysis is an economic and environment-friendly method to extract metals from waste materials. From the perspective of molten salt characteristics, the application of molten salts in chemistry, electrochemistry, energy, and thermal storage should be comprehensively elaborated. This review discusses further directions for the research and development of molten salt electrolysis and their use for metal recovery from various metal wastes, such as magnet scrap, nuclear waste, and cemented carbide scrap. Attention is placed on the development of various electrolysis methods for different metal containing wastes, overcoming some problems in electrolytes, electrodes, and electrolytic cells. Special focus is given to future development directions for current associated processing obstacles.</p>

Abstract:Molten salt is widely utilized as high-temperature heat transfer and storage medium. Firstly, the molecular dynamics and potential function of molten salt is summarized and analyzed in this work. Buckingham potential is more suitable for nitrate and fluoride molten salts, while BMH potential is better suited for carbonate and chloride molten salts. Secondly, the transport and thermophysical properties of molten salt and molten salt nanofluids are analyzed and summarized. The increase of Li+ concentration leads to higher specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity, and it increases simulation error. Increasing K+ concentration reduces specific heat capacity error but increases calculation error for other thermal properties. Carbonate simulations exhibit relatively small errors with good agreement with experimental data. Adding nanoparticles to molten salt is an effective method to enhance molten salt thermal physical performance. Future research directions in the field of molecular dynamics of molten salt encompass investigating the impact of nanofluids on molecular dynamics, mitigating simulation errors, exploring corrosion characteristics through molecular dynamics simulations. Large-sized interface model and long-term scale are more effective for joint experimental and theoretical results according to the machine learning accelerated molecular dynamics research. More combinatorial properties such as corrosion characteristics can be explored through molecular dynamics simulations, providing a new basis for molten salt application.

Abstract:Molten salt oxidation (MSO), a robust thermal but non-flame process, has the inherent capability of destroying organic constituents in wastes, while retaining inorganic and radioactive materials in situ. It has been considered as an alternative to incineration and may be a solution to many waste disposal problems. The present review first describes the history and development of MSO, as well as design and engineering details, and then focuses on reaction mechanisms and its potential applications in various wastes, including hazardous wastes, medical wastes, mixed wastes, and energetic materials. Finally, the current status of and prospects for the MSO process and directions for future research are considered.

Abstract:The growing interest in energy applications of molten salts is justified by several of their properties. Their possibilities of usage as a coolant, heat transfer fluid or heat storage substrate, require thermo-hydrodynamic refined calculations. Many researchers are using simulation techniques, such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for their projects or conceptual designs. The aim of this work is providing a review of basic properties (density, viscosity, thermal conductivity and heat capacity) of the most common and referred salt mixtures. After checking data, tabulated and graphical outputs are given in order to offer the most suitable available values to be used as input parameters for other calculations or simulations. The reviewed values show a general scattering in characterization, mainly in thermal properties. This disagreement suggests that, in several cases, new studies must be started (and even new measurement techniques should be developed) to obtain accurate values.

Abstract:The properties of non‐oxide materials are continuously revealed, and their applications in the fields of ceramics, energy, and catalysis are increasingly extensive. Regardless of the traditional binary materials or the MAX phases, the preparation methods, which are environmentally friendly, efficient, economical, and easy to scale‐up, have always been the focus of attention. Molten salt synthesis has demonstrated unparalleled advantages in achieving non‐oxide materials. In addition, with the development of the process in molten salt synthesis, it also shows great potential in scale‐up production. In this review, the recent progress of molten salt synthesis in the preparation of binary non‐oxide and MAX phase is reviewed, as well as some novel processes. The reaction mechanisms and the influence of synthetic conditions for certain materials are discussed in detail. The paper is finalized with the discussion of the application prospect and future research trends of molten salt synthesis in non‐oxide materials. In this review, the procedure and mechanism of molten salt synthesis are introduced, and the progress of this method in the synthesis of non‐oxide materials is discussed in detail.

Abstract:Molten salts have been used in metal extraction for more than a century, and chemists and metallurgists have extensively studied the properties of these high-temperature phases. Because fundamental properties of salts, such as conductivity, viscosity, and density, have been determined to a high degree of accuracy, the processes have been optimized. Unfortunately, very few new, innovative processes have been developed in the past 50 years and many metals are still extracted by essentially the same routes as those used in the last century. This paper discusses possible new processes involving electrodeoxidation, mediated reactions, and novel cell designs.

Abstract:The growing demand of advanced electrochemical energy storage devices for various applications, including portable electronic products, electric vehicles, and large-scale energy storage grids, has triggered extensive research interests and efforts on various rechargeable batteries such as lithium/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs/NIBs), aluminium-ion batteries (AIBs), liquid metal batteries (LMBs), and molten-air batteries (MABs) in the past decades. A key issue to push forward the development of these batteries is the exploration of high-performance electrodes and electrolytes, which calls for efficient and versatile synthetic methods. Molten salts (MSs), liquid-phase ionic compounds or mixtures, provide an effective platform to widen the reaction temperatures and enrich the chemical environments for the synthesis of novel electrode materials and electrolytes. In this review, the general principles of molten salts and recent research progresses on molten salt-based battery materials are surveyed. Molten-salt synthesis of electrode materials, including sintering and electrolysis, are emerging as competitive substitutes for conventional synthesis techniques. These methods have shown their effectiveness and uniqueness in adjusting the crystal structure, morphology, and performance of electrode materials for LIBs/NIBs, as suggested by recent progresses and applications of diverse cathodes (layered oxides, spinel oxides, polyanions, etc.) and anodes (metal oxides, alloys, carbons, etc.). Furthermore, the applications of molten salts as effective electrolytes are demonstrated in representative new-type secondary batteries including AIBs, LMBs and MABs. Finally, the emerging opportunities, challenges, and interesting research trends are envisioned to promote the further development of molten-salt methodology for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Molten salts play an important role in the electrolysis of solid metal compounds, especially oxides and sulfides, and have an impressive storage capacity and power, so they are now the electrolyte for many new types of rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately, due to the high viscosity and high surface tension of molten salt, the unsatisfactory wettability of electrode and molten salt restricts the development of molten salt electrochemistry. In the past half century, research on interface phenomena has been devoted to establishing more accurate models for measuring surface tension and wetting angle, developing more scientific wetting angle measurement techniques, and exploring the influencing factors of wettability. Different from a water solution interface, molten salt experiment are performed in high temperature and pressure environments, making it difficult to test the wetting angle, and there has been little research on the interface phenomenon of molten salt. In this Review, on the basis of existing models and experimental data, the factors and mechanisms that lead to the difference of wettability between melt and solid matrix in molten salt systems are analyzed in detail. Finally, we put forward the prospects and suggestions for the study of the wettability of melt to solid substrate in molten salt.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Most of the photocatalytic materials are prepared by wet chemical methods and calcination methods. These preparation methods usually have the problems of slow reaction speed and low crystallinity of products, which seriously restrict the development of photocatalytic technology. Molten salt method (MSM) has attracted much attention of researchers because of its unique advantages in optimizing the synthesis route of photocatalyst. Herein, the application of molten salt technology in the preparation of photocatalytic materials in recent years is summarized. The advantages of MSM in photocatalytic synthesis, such as promoting crystallization, adjusting morphology, accelerating the construction of heterostructure, stabilizing single atom, doping auxiliary elements and adjusting defect position, are also discussed in detail. It is indicated that MSM has important application potential in the preparation of photocatalytic materials. Meanwhile, the research achievements and existing problems of MSM are summarized, and suggestions for further application of MSM in photocatalyst's preparation are put forward.</p></section>

Abstract:The science of molten salt electrochemistry for electrowinning of reactive metals, such as calcium, and its in situ application in pyro-reduction has been described. Calcium electrowinning has been performed in a 5–10wt% calcium oxide–calcium chloride molten salt by the electrolytic dissociation of calcium oxide. This electrolysis requires the use of a porous ceramic sheath around the anode to keep the cathodically deposited calcium and the anodic gases separate. Stainless steel cathode and graphite anode have been used in the temperature range of 850–950°C. This salt mixture is produced as a result of the direct oxide reduction (DOR) of reactive metal oxides by calcium in a calcium chloride bath. The primary purpose of this process is to recover the expensive calcium reductant and to recycle calcium chloride. Experimental data have been included to justify the suitability as well as limitations of the electrowinning process. Transport of oxygen ions through the sheath is found to be the rate controlling step. Under the constraints of the reactor design, a calcium recovery rate of approx. 150g/h was achieved. Feasibility of a process to produce metals by pyrometallurgical reduction, using the calcium reductant produced electrolytically within the same reactor, has been shown in a hybrid process. Several processes are currently under investigation to use this electrowon calcium for in situ reduction of metal oxides.

Abstract:Molten salt is an excellent medium for heat transfer and storage. The unique microstructure of carbon nanomaterials leads to good mechanical stability, low density, high thermal conductivity, and high strength, etc. The addition of carbon nanomaterials to molten salt to form molten salt nanofluid can remarkably enhance the specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity of molten salt and reduce the molten salt viscosity, which is of great importance to increase the heat storage density and reduce the heat storage cost. Nevertheless, some challenges remain in the study of such nanofluids. The main challenge is the dispersion stability of carbon nanomaterials. Therefore, to improve research on carbon nanofluids, this paper summarizes the progress of carbon-based molten salt nanofluid research worldwide including the preparation methods of molten salt nanofluids, the improvement of heat transfer performance, and the improvement of heat storage performance. The effects of carbon nanoparticle concentration, size, and type on the heat transfer and storage performance of molten salt are derived, and the effects of nanoparticle shape on the heat transfer performance of molten salt are analyzed while more promising preparation methods for carbon-based molten salt nanofluids are proposed. In addition, the future problems that need to be solved for high-temperature molten salt-based carbon nanofluids are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Molten salts and molten salt mixtures (will be referred as molten salts for convenience) are important heat storage media and heat transfer fluids for concentrated solar power plants and molten salt reactors. Besides the heat capacity, the thermal conductivity, and the thermal and chemical stability, the viscosity is also widely studied by experimental measurements and theoretical predictions because of the importance in engineering applications. In this work, the experimental viscosities of molten salts are compiled from literatures, and a novel empirical equation is proposed for the prediction of the temperature dependence of viscosity of molten salts. This novel empirical equation extends the Arrhenius equation with three empirical parameters and performs better than the Arrhenius equation for the applications to fluorides, chlorides, nitrates, and carbonates. Finally, its physical basis is discussed and the empirical parameters are recommended for molten salts with experimental viscosity being reported in literatures.

This paper discusses the available recycling processes for spent oxide fuels based on molten salt. The paper also discusses the current research gaps for recycling processes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes have captured inter-disciplinary interest owing to their exceptional electronic conductivities, adjustable layered structures, and controllable interfacial functional groups. Low-cost, efficient, and amicable techniques are urgently desired for synthesizing high-quality and high-yield 2D MXene materials. Recently, molten-salt-assisted methods have been proven to be the promising processes to construct versatile 2D MXenes with metallic-level conductivity, good mechanical strength, low ion diffusion barrier and rich surface chemistries to meet the criteria for practical applications. Herein, the most up-to-date progress of molten-salt-assisted approaches for manufacturing 2D MXene materials and their synthesis mechanisms are comprehensively summarized, introducing the effect on the physical/chemical properties of the obtained MXenes compared with other common synthesis methods. Meanwhile, typical examples of MXenes obtained by tuning surface termination, interlayer spacing, size, and morphology are presented. Further, the focus turns to their structure–property relationships and applications in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, including supercapacitors, Li-batteries, Zn-ion batteries and electrocatalysis. Finally, a discussion about the challenges and prospects of the molten-salt-assisted approaches is put forward. This review will guide and encourage the future rational design and controllable synthesis of 2D MXenes with high performance based on molten-salt-assisted strategies.

Abstract:With the emergence of the concentrating solar power (CSP) technology, the corrosion behaviors of potential materials applied in thermal energy transfer and storage system attract tremendous attentions. Corrosion behaviors of X80 carbon steel, 304, 316L stainless steels, and 600, 825 nickel alloys in the molten salt mixtures at different temperatures were comparatively investigated using immersion tests under static and dynamic states and electrochemical scans. The corrosion resistance of stainless steels and nickel‐based alloys in molten salt at 530 °C followed the sequence of 304<316L<600<825. The aggressiveness of different molten salt mixtures was compared, indicating that the ternary system was more aggressive than the binary system. The corrosion aggressiveness under dynamic state was more severe when compared to that under the static state. The N2 atmosphere was proved to be protective for alloys immersed in high temperature molten salts.

Abstract:Molten salts of inorganic nature are excellent reaction media for various research and industrial uses. Their applications in energy technologies are also wide, including, but not limited to, thermal, nuclear, and electrochemical processes and their combinations. This review aims to capture and analyze selected innovations and developments in recent past, with a specific focus on electrochemical energy storage (EES) technologies. Additionally, it seeks to clarify some fundamental concepts in EES and address prevalent misconceptions, such as those related to Faradaic capacitive/Nernstian processes, battery-like/capacitive cyclic voltammograms (CVs) and galvanostatic charge-discharge curves (GCDs), as well as the calculation of specific energy. The application of molten salts in an emerging EES technology, known as supercapattery, is also explored in this review. This includes the design principle, fundamental calculations, and recent noteworthy demonstrations. Functioning as a hybrid technology, supercapattery combines the merits of both supercapacitor and battery and potentially outperforms each. Drawing insights from advancements in molten salt batteries and molten salt supercapacitors, this review delves into the prospects of developing a sodium-activated carbon (Na-AC) molten salt supercapattery. Through thermodynamic calculations, a specific energy of 445 W h kg−1-AM (where AM denotes the total active mass on both electrodes) is projected, which surpasses the specific energy of 250 W h kg−1-cell achieved by the best commercial lithium-ion battery.
