Abstract:INTRODUCTION Adsorption of surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on metal surfaces can form a boundary layer, substantially decreasing the friction coefficient and wear in the boundary lubrication regime [1]. An applied electrochemical potential on the metal surface can change the mass and molecular aggregates of the adsorbed surfactants [2], thus adjusting the boundary lubrication properties a lot [3]. But the potential controlled friction properties in surfactant aqueous solution is only clarified in macroscopic friction test. In this study, the atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to examine the influence of the applied electrochemical potential on the friction coefficient of stainless steel surface in SDS aqueous solutions in nanoscale. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), lateral force microscopy (LFM), force distance curve measurements and cyclic voltammetry were carried out to achieve this goal.
