Abstract:Malicious message detection, also known as spam detection, on social networks has long been a critical but challenging problem to be addressed. It has attracted more and more attention from government, industry, and academia, due to an increasing number of recent massive cybercrimes that exploit the dissemination of faked or harmful messages on social networks. Previous work relies on the content of messages or the behavior of user accounts to differentiate and classify malicious and benign messages, which becomes ineffective under evasion tactics from advanced attackers. Different from those solutions, in this work, we leverage the differences in dissemination between benign and malicious messages on social networks and derive features from their dissemination paths among users and social communities to detect malicious messages. Experimental results obtained from real-world datasets demonstrate that our new approach is robust and effective in detecting malicious messages on social networks, which achieves 95% precision and 95% recall.
