Abstract:COVID-19 impacted every part of the world, although the misinformation about the outbreak traveled faster than the virus. Misinformation spread through online social networks (OSN) often misled people from following correct medical practices. In particular, OSN bots have been a primary source of disseminating false information and initiating cyber propaganda. Existing work neglects the presence of bots that act as a catalyst in the spread and focuses on fake news detection in 'articles shared in posts' rather than the post (textual) content. Most work on misinformation detection uses manually labeled datasets that are hard to scale for building their predictive models. In this research, we overcome this challenge of data scarcity by proposing an automated approach for labeling data using verified fact-checked statements on a Twitter dataset. In addition, we combine textual features with user-level features (such as followers count and friends count) and tweet-level features (such as number of mentions, hashtags and urls in a tweet) to act as additional indicators to detect misinformation. Moreover, we analyzed the presence of bots in tweets and show that bots change their behavior over time and are most active during the misinformation campaign. We collected 10.22 Million COVID-19 related tweets and used our annotation model to build an extensive and original ground truth dataset for classification purposes. We utilize various machine learning models to accurately detect misinformation and our best classification model achieves precision (82%), recall (96%), and false positive rate (3.58%). Also, our bot analysis indicates that bots generated approximately 10% of misinformation tweets. Our methodology results in substantial exposure of false information, thus improving the trustworthiness of information disseminated through social media platforms.

Abstract:A drastic rise in potentially life-threatening misinformation has been a by-product of the COVID-19 pandemic. Computational support to identify false information within the massive body of data on the topic is crucial to prevent harm. Researchers proposed many methods for flagging online misinformation related to COVID-19. However, these methods predominantly target specific content types (e.g., news) or platforms (e.g., Twitter). The methods’ capabilities to generalize were largely unclear so far. We evaluate fifteen Transformer-based models on five COVID-19 misinformation datasets that include social media posts, news articles, and scientific papers to fill this gap. We show tokenizers and models tailored to COVID-19 data do not provide a significant advantage over general-purpose ones. Our study provides a realistic assessment of models for detecting COVID-19 misinformation. We expect that evaluating a broad spectrum of datasets and models will benefit future research in developing misinformation detection systems.
A Comparative Study of Hybrid Models in Health Misinformation Text Classification

Abstract:This study evaluates the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models in detecting COVID-19-related misinformation on online social networks (OSNs), aiming to develop more effective tools for countering the spread of health misinformation during the pan-demic. The study trained and tested various ML classifiers (Naive Bayes, SVM, Random Forest, etc.), DL models (CNN, LSTM, hybrid CNN+LSTM), and pretrained language models (DistilBERT, RoBERTa) on the "COVID19-FNIR DATASET". These models were evaluated for accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision, and ROC, and used preprocessing techniques like stemming and lemmatization. The results showed SVM performed well, achieving a 94.41% F1-score. DL models with Word2Vec embeddings exceeded 98% in all performance metrics (accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision & ROC). The CNN+LSTM hybrid models also exceeded 98% across performance metrics, outperforming pretrained models like DistilBERT and RoBERTa. Our study concludes that DL and hybrid DL models are more effective than conventional ML algorithms for detecting COVID-19 misinformation on OSNs. The findings highlight the importance of advanced neural network approaches and large-scale pretraining in misinformation detection. Future research should optimize these models for various misinformation types and adapt to changing OSNs, aiding in combating health misinformation.

Abstract:The quick advancement of technology in internet communication and social media platforms eased several problems during the COVID-19 outbreak. It was, however, used to spread untruths and misinformation regarding the illness and the immunization. In this study, it is examined whether machine-learning algorithms (Naive Bayesian, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, and Support Vector Machine, as well as Gradient Boost, Bagging, AdaBoost, Stochastic Gradient Descent, and Multi-layer Perceptron) can automatically classify and point out fake news text about the COVID-19 pandemic posted on social media platforms. The "COVID19-FNIR DATASET" was used to train, test, and fine-tune machine learning models in order to predict the sentiment class of each fake news item on COVID-19. The results were assessed using a variety of evaluation metrics (confusion matrix, classification rate, true positives rate, etc.). The findings collected demonstrate an extremely high level of accuracy when compared to other models.

Abstract:Summary: Intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials in 50 patients were reviewed; each waveform was correlated with intraoperative surgical events and conditions. Twenty-two patients maintained reproducible waveforms and awoke without neurological deficit. Two patients had random waveform changes not correlated with a surgical event and awoke without deficit. Twelve patients showed waveform changes temporally related to circumstances that might endanger cord function; two of these awoke with transient neurological abnormality. Satisfactory waveforms were not obtained from 14 patients. Somatosensory evoked potential monitoring in scoliosis surgery appears to be sensitive, but may not be sufficiently specific; waveform changes do not necessarily indicate objective neurological damage

Abstract:'Fake news' refers to the misinformation presented about issues or events, such as COVID-19. Meanwhile, social media giants claimed to take COVID-19 related misinformation seriously, however, they have been ineffectual. This research uses Information Fusion to obtain real news data from News Broadcasting, Health, and Government websites, while fake news data are collected from social media sites. 39 features were created from multimedia texts and used to detect fake news regarding COVID-19 using state-of-the-art deep learning models. Our model's fake news feature extraction improved accuracy from 59.20% to 86.12%. Overall high precision is 85% using the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model; our best recall and F1-Measure for fake news were 83% using the Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) model. Similarly, precision, recall, and F1-Measure for real news are 88%, 90%, and 88% using the GRU, RNN, and Long short-term memory (LSTM) model, respectively. Our model outperformed standard machine learning algorithms.

Abstract:COVID-19 has affected all peoples' lives. Though COVID-19 is on the rising, the existence of misinformation about the virus also grows in parallel. Additionally, the spread of misinformation has created confusion among people, caused disturbances in society, and even led to deaths. Social media is central to our daily lives. The Internet has become a significant source of knowledge. Owing to the widespread damage caused by fake news, it is important to build computerized systems to detect fake news. The paper proposes an updated deep neural network for identification of false news. The deep learning techniques are The Modified-LSTM (one to three layers) and The Modified GRU (one to three layers). In particular, we carry out investigations of a large dataset of tweets passing on data with respect to COVID-19. In our study, we separate the dubious claims into two categories: true and false. We compare the performance of the various algorithms in terms of prediction accuracy. The six machine learning techniques are decision trees, logistic regression, k nearest neighbors, random forests, support vector machines, and naïve Bayes (NB). The parameters of deep learning techniques are optimized using Keras-tuner. Four Benchmark datasets were used. Two feature extraction methods were used (TF-ID with N-gram) to extract essential features from the four benchmark datasets for the baseline machine learning model and word embedding feature extraction method for the proposed deep neural network methods. The results obtained with the proposed framework reveal high accuracy in detecting Fake and non-Fake tweets containing COVID-19 information. These results demonstrate significant improvement as compared to the existing state of art results of baseline machine learning models. Abstract:Since its emergence in December 2019, there have been numerous posts and news regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in social media, traditional print, and electronic media. These sources have information from both trusted and non-trusted medical sources. Furthermore, the news from these media are spread rapidly. Spreading a piece of deceptive information may lead to anxiety, unwanted exposure to medical remedies, tricks for digital marketing, and may lead to deadly factors. Therefore, a model for detecting fake news from the news pool is essential. In this work, the dataset which is a fusion of news related to COVID-19 that has been sourced from data from several social media and news sources is used for classification. In the first step, preprocessing is performed on the dataset to remove unwanted text, then tokenization is carried out to extract the tokens from the raw text data collected from various sources. Later, feature selection is performed to avoid the computational overhead incurred in processing all the features in the dataset. The linguistic and sentiment features are extracted for further processing. Finally, several state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms are trained to classify the COVID-19-related dataset. These algorithms are then evaluated using various metrics. The results show that the random forest classifier outperforms the other classifiers with an accuracy of 88.50%.
A Large-Scale Comparative Study of Accurate COVID-19 Information versus Misinformation

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic led to an infodemic where an overwhelming amount of COVID-19 related content was being disseminated at high velocity through social media. This made it challenging for citizens to differentiate between accurate and inaccurate information about COVID-19. This motivated us to carry out a comparative study of the characteristics of COVID-19 misinformation versus those of accurate COVID-19 information through a large-scale computational analysis of over 242 million tweets. The study makes comparisons alongside four key aspects: 1) the distribution of topics, 2) the live status of tweets, 3) language analysis and 4) the spreading power over time. An added contribution of this study is the creation of a COVID-19 misinformation classification dataset. Finally, we demonstrate that this new dataset helps improve misinformation classification by more than 9\% based on average F1 measure.

Abstract:Fake news is challenging to detect due to mixing accurate and inaccurate information from reliable and unreliable sources. Social media is a data source that is not trustworthy all the time, especially in the COVID-19 outbreak. During the COVID-19 epidemic, fake news is widely spread. The best way to deal with this is early detection. Accordingly, in this work, we have proposed a hybrid deep learning model that uses convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) to detect COVID-19 fake news. The proposed model consists of some layers: an embedding layer, a convolutional layer, a pooling layer, an LSTM layer, a flatten layer, a dense layer, and an output layer. For experimental results, three COVID-19 fake news datasets are used to evaluate six machine learning models, two deep learning models, and our proposed model. The machine learning models are DT, KNN, LR, RF, SVM, and NB, while the deep learning models are CNN and LSTM. Also, four matrices are used to validate the results: accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-measure. The conducted experiments show that the proposed model outperforms the six machine learning models and the two deep learning models. Consequently, the proposed system is capable of detecting the fake news of COVID-19 significantly.

Abstract:While the world has been combating COVID-19 for over three years, an ongoing "Infodemic" due to the spread of fake news regarding the pandemic has also been a global issue. The existence of the fake news impact different aspect of our daily lives, including politics, public health, economic activities, etc. Readers could mistake fake news for real news, and consequently have less access to authentic information. This phenomenon will likely cause confusion of citizens and conflicts in society. Currently, there are major challenges in fake news research. It is challenging to accurately identify fake news data in social media posts. In-time human identification is infeasible as the amount of the fake news data is overwhelming. Besides, topics discussed in fake news are hard to identify due to their similarity to real news. The goal of this paper is to identify fake news on social media to help stop the spread. We present Deep Learning approaches and an ensemble approach for fake news detection. Our detection models achieved higher accuracy than previous studies. The ensemble approach further improved the detection performance. We discovered feature differences between fake news and real news items. When we added them into the sentence embeddings, we found that they affected the model performance. We applied a hybrid method and built models for recognizing topics from posts. We found half of the identified topics were overlapping in fake news and real news, which could increase confusion in the population.

Abstract:COVID-19 misinformation on social media platforms such as twitter is a threat to effective pandemic management. Prior works on tweet COVID-19 misinformation negates the role of semantic features common to twitter such as charged emotions. Thus, we present a novel COVID-19 misinformation model, which uses both a tweet emotion encoder and COVID-19 misinformation encoder to predict whether a tweet contains COVID-19 misinformation. Our emotion encoder was fine-tuned on a novel annotated dataset and our COVID-19 misinformation encoder was fine-tuned on a subset of the COVID-HeRA dataset. Experimental results show superior results using the combination of emotion and misinformation encoders as opposed to a misinformation classifier alone. Furthermore, extensive result analysis was conducted, highlighting low quality labels and mismatched label distributions as key limitations to our study.

Abstract:The fast growth of technology in online communication and social media platforms alleviated numerous difficulties during the COVID-19 epidemic. However, it was utilized to propagate falsehoods and misleading information about the disease and the vaccination. In this study, we investigate the ability of deep neural networks, namely, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bi-directional LSTM, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and a hybrid of CNN and LSTM networks, to automatically classify and identify fake news content related to the COVID-19 pandemic posted on social media platforms. These deep neural networks have been trained and tested using the “COVID-19 Fake News” dataset, which contains 21,379 real and fake news instances for the COVID-19 pandemic and its vaccines. The real news data were collected from independent and internationally reliable institutions on the web, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations (UN), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and their official accounts on Twitter. The fake news data were collected from different fact-checking websites (such as Snopes, PolitiFact, and FactCheck). The evaluation results showed that the CNN model outperforms the other deep neural networks with the best accuracy of 94.2%.

Abstract:The explosion of disinformation accompanying the COVID-19 pandemic has overloaded fact-checkers and media worldwide, and brought a new major challenge to government responses worldwide. Not only is disinformation creating confusion about medical science amongst citizens, but it is also amplifying distrust in policy makers and governments. To help tackle this, we developed computational methods to categorise COVID-19 disinformation. The COVID-19 disinformation categories could be used for a) focusing fact-checking efforts on the most damaging kinds of COVID-19 disinformation; b) guiding policy makers who are trying to deliver effective public health messages and counter effectively COVID-19 disinformation. This paper presents: 1) a corpus containing what is currently the largest available set of manually annotated COVID-19 disinformation categories; 2) a classification-aware neural topic model (CANTM) designed for COVID-19 disinformation category classification and topic discovery; 3) an extensive analysis of COVID-19 disinformation categories with respect to time, volume, false type, media type and origin source.

Abstract:Recent rapid technological advancements in online social networks such as Twitter have led to a great incline in spreading false information and fake news. Misinformation is especially prevalent in the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, leading to individuals accepting bogus and potentially deleterious claims and articles. Quick detection of fake news can reduce the spread of panic and confusion among the public. For our analysis in this paper, we report a methodology to analyze the reliability of information shared on social media pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our best approach is based on an ensemble of three transformer models (BERT, ALBERT, and XLNET) to detecting fake news. This model was trained and evaluated in the context of the ConstraintAI 2021 shared task COVID19 Fake News Detection in English. Our system obtained 0.9855 f1-score on testset and ranked 5th among 160 teams.

Abstract:Twitter has become a popular platform to receive daily updates. The more the people rely on it, the more critical it becomes to get genuine information out. False information can easily be shared on Twitter, which influences people's feelings, especially if fake information is linked to COVID-19. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to detect fake information before it becomes uncontrollable. Real-time tweets were used as part of this study. A few features like tweet's text, sentiment etc., were extracted and analyzed. The project returns a set of statistics determining the tweet's veracity. In this study, various classifiers have been used to see which of them works best with the proposed model in classifying the used dataset. The proposed model achieved the best accuracy of 84.54% and the highest F1-score of 0.842 with Random Forest. With careful analysis while feature selection and using few features, the model developed is equivalent in performance to the other models that use a lot of features. This confirms that the model developed is less complex and highly dependable.

Abstract:The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of online platforms (like Facebook and Instagram) opened the way for disseminating information that hasn't been experienced in the history of mankind earlier. Consumers generate and share more information and a massive amount of data than ever with the growing utilization of social media sites, many of which are deceptive with little relevance to reality. A daunting task is the automated classification of a text article as misleading or misinformation. To see the latest news alerts, individuals often utilize e-newspapers, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and many more. Fake news created on social media can lead to uncertainty amongst individuals and psychiatric illness. We may detect that news obtained based on machine learning techniques is either true or false. This study proposes a machine learning technique to detect fake news by carrying out filtration on social media data, classifying the preprocessed data using a machine learning algorithm, evaluating the developed system, and evaluating the results.

Abstract:The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) is probably the most disruptive global health disaster in recent history. It negatively impacted the whole world and virtually brought the global economy to a standstill. However, as the virus was spreading, infecting people and claiming thousands of lives so was the spread and propagation of fake news, misinformation and disinformation about the event. These included the spread of unconfirmed health advice and remedies on social media. In this paper, false information about the pandemic is identified using a content-based approach and metadata curated from messages posted to online social networks. A content-based approach combined with metadata as well as an initial feature analysis is used and then several supervised learning models are tested for identifying and predicting misleading posts. Our approach shows up to 93% accuracy in the detection of fake news related posts about the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:A vast amount of data is generated every second for microblogs, content sharing via social media sites, and social networking. Twitter is an essential popular microblog where people voice their opinions about daily issues. Recently, analyzing these opinions is the primary concern of Sentiment analysis or opinion mining. Efficiently capturing, gathering, and analyzing sentiments have been challenging for researchers. To deal with these challenges, in this research work, we propose a highly accurate approach for SA of fake news on COVID-19. The fake news dataset contains fake news on COVID-19; we started by data preprocessing (replace the missing value, noise removal, tokenization, and stemming). We applied a semantic model with term frequency and inverse document frequency weighting for data representation. In the measuring and evaluation step, we applied eight machine-learning algorithms such as Naive Bayesian, Adaboost, K -nearest neighbors, random forest, logistic regression, decision tree, neural networks, and support vector machine and four deep learning CNN, LSTM, RNN, and GRU. Afterward, based on the results, we boiled a highly efficient prediction model with python, and we trained and evaluated the classification model according to the performance measures (confusion matrix, classification rate, true positives rate...), then tested the model on a set of unclassified fake news on COVID-19, to predict the sentiment class of each fake news on COVID-19. Obtained results demonstrate a high accuracy compared to the other models. Finally, a set of recommendations is provided with future directions for this research to help researchers select an efficient sentiment analysis model on Twitter data.

Amid the COVID 19 epidemic, this misleading information has aggravated the situation by putting peoples mental and physical lives in danger. To limit the spread of such inaccuracies, identifying the fake news from online platforms could be the first and foremost step. In this research, the authors have conducted a comparative analysis by implementing five transformer based models such as BERT, BERT without LSTM, ALBERT, RoBERTa, and a Hybrid of BERT & ALBERT in order to detect the fraudulent news of COVID 19 from the internet. COVID 19 Fake News Dataset has been used for training and testing the models. Among all these models, the RoBERTa model has performed better than other models by obtaining an F1 score of 0.98 in both real and fake classes.
