Abstract:Two erbium-doped fiber ring laser configurations are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Both configurations employ array-waveguide-grating (AWG)-based cavities to select the operation wavelengths. The first experiment can achieve discrete wavelength tuning in a range of 31.8 nm with 2.0-dBm output power for each channel. The second experiment yields four wavelength lasing with -10-dBm output power for all signals after power equalization. The linewidth of either AWG laser is as small as 0.015 nm and the side-mode suppression ratio is over 55 dB. (C) 2003 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:A 1 × 32 silica-on-silicon-based arrayed waveguide grating is designed and fabricated. The detailed consideration of waveguide bending, coupling between adjacent waveguides, and the taper structure for the design of the arrayed waveguide grating is presented. By applying the high-resolution photomask, PECVD-based silica deposition, reactive ion etching, and 8° end-face polishing, a AWG chip is obtained with crosstalk lower than -28 dB for the adjacent channels and -35 dB for the non-adjacent channels. The average insertion loss is about 4.9 dB and the imbalance is approximately 1.72 dB after the chip is fiber-array coupled and packaged.

Abstract:An 8×8 silica-based arrayed waveguide grating(AWG) with the central wavelength of 1.55 μm and the channel spacing of 0.8 nm is designed and fabricated.The design,fabrication and test process are presented in details.According to the test results of the packaged chip,the 3 dB bandwidth of the device is 0.22 nm,the minimum and maximum channel loss are 4.01 dB and 6.32 dB,respectively,when the central input channel is used,while the corresponding values for the outermost input channel are 6.24 dB and 9.02 dB,respectively.The output wavelength shift is below 0.039 nm.The crosstalk of the device is better than -25 dB.And the PDL of the device is less than 0.3 dB.

Abstract:In this paper we review our work on birefringence compensated arrayed waveguide grating. We elaborate on a birefringence compensation technique based on angled star couplers in arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and discuss several demonstrations both in low-index-contrast and high-index-contrast material systems. A 16-channel AWG with 100GHz channel spacing for DWDM application is designed and fabricated in silica-based low-index-contrast waveguide. The experimental results confirm that the polarization-dependent wavelength shift (PD lambda) can be tuned by varying the incident/diffraction angle at the star couplers and a birefringence-free property can be achieved without additional fabrication process as compared to conventional AWG. A further validation of this technique is demonstrated in high-index-contrast silicon-on-insulator waveguide, in combination with different diffraction orders for TE and TM polarizations. A birefringence compensated silicon nanowire AWG for CWDM optical interconnects is designed and fabricated. The theoretical and experimental results show that the PD lambda can be reduced from 380-420nm to 0.5-3.5 nm, below 25% of the 3 dB bandwidth of the channel response in the wavelength range of 1500 to 1600nm.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an ultra-compact birefringence-compensated arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) triplexer based on silicon nanowire waveguide. The cross-order design is employed and the device has a small footprint of 0.18×0.12 mm2. The normalized losses for TM polarization for three channels are less than 4 dB with the crosstalk better than 18 dB. The polarization dependent wavelength shift (PDλ) is less than 2.5 nm for three channels operating at the wavelength range of 1490-1550 nm by using angled star couplers in combination with different diffraction orders for the two polarizations.

Abstract:A widely wavelength tunable semiconductor laser based on two cascaded half-wave-coupled rectangular ring resonators is demonstrated. Vernier effect between two rectangular rings with perimeter of 281 and 305 mu m is employed to enlarge the tuning range. Simple fabrication process is used with all active waveguides. No epitaxial regrowth, grating, or high-resolution lithography is needed. By adjusting the injection currents applied to the cascaded rectangular rings synchronously, wavelength tuning of 35 channels with 100 GHz spacing is achieved with side mode suppression ratio up to 40.5 dB.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) optical wavelength demultiplexing is demonstrated by employing multilevel arrayed waveguides as a 2D diffraction grating, named the 2D arrayed waveguide grating (2D-AWG). Since the monochromatic lightwave is diffracted by the 2D-AWG to a series of periodic spots with 2D diffraction orders in both x and y directions while the dispersion direction is never parallel to the x or y direction, we can obtain 2D wavelength demultiplexing exploiting diffraction orders of either the x or y direction. One of the two dispersion components is designed much larger than the other, and the correspondent spatial free spectral range component is set properly to ensure high diffraction efficiency. The input and output ports can also be designed based on the multilevel lightwave circuit (MLC), and their level planes can be tuned parallel to that of the MLC-based 2D-AWG, which makes it feasible to integrate the 2D-AWG with the input port and/or the output port. It provides a promising way to realize large-scale and high-density optical multiplexers/demultiplexers. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated an arrayed waveguide grating based on silica-on-silicon materials with flattened spectral response by adding a multimode interference coupler in the input region. The theoretical analysis and calculation are given. The device has worked effectively and has been tested with the passband 0.43 nm at 1 dB, 0.72 nm at 3 dB and 1.56 nm at 20 dB respectively, at a cost of power penalty of about 1.5 dB. The crosstalk is less than -30 dB, owing to the high-resolution photomask and well-controlled fabrication processes.

Abstract:An integrated 16 × 16 cyclic-arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR) targeting C-band DWDM routing applications with a channel spacing of 100 GHz is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Measurement results show that the maximum channel deviation is around ±7% of its channel spacing with the 3-dB bandwidth wider than 0.4 nm for all port combinations, and the minimum insertion loss and the worst crosstalk are about 1.64 dB and 30 dB, respectively.

Abstract:We report our latest experimental results of the half-wave-coupled rectangular ring-FP laser. All the waveguides of the device are active, and the thermooptic effect is employed to extend the tuning range beyond the free-spectral-range limit. Singleelectrode tuning of 20 channels with 100-GHz spacing is obtained. By combining five single-electrode-controlled tuning curves with different bias currents on fixed electrodes and with the thermoelectric cooler fixed at 20 °C, wavelength tuning of 50 channels with 100-GHz spacing covering the L-band is achieved with a side-mode suppression ratio up to 41 dB. Direct modulation at 2.5 Gb/s is also demonstrated. The simple and compact ring-FP laser has great potential as a low-cost tunable laser for many applications.

Abstract:A four-channel 400-GHz spacing flat focal field arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer is designed based on polymeric optical waveguide. The waveguide core-layer material is a newly developed negative tone epoxy Novolak resin (ENR) polymer with ultravoilet (UV) cured resin Norland optical adhesive 61(NOA61) as the cladding layer. The device is fabricated using electron-beam direct writing, which has less processing steps than the reported polymeric AWGs. The experimental result is presented.

Abstract:We demonstrate an arrayed waveguide grating based on silicon nanowires with birefringence compensation for optical interconnects using coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM). Angled star couplers are employed in combination with different diffraction orders for TM and TE polarizations. This device has a compact footprint of 0.36 mm x 0.17 mm. Theoretical and experimental results show that the polarization-dependent wavelength shifts (PD lambda) can be reduced from 380-420 to 0.5-3.5 nm, below 25% of the 3 dB bandwidth of channel response. The measured cross talk for TM polarization is better than -18 dB, and that for TE is better than -14 dB. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Experimental results on a cross-order arrayed waveguide grating triplexer for fiber-to-the-home applications are presented. The cross-order design allowed us to fabricate compact devices of a size of only 19 mm times 1.6 mm. The measured spectra confirmed the operation principle of the device.

Abstract:In this paper, an athermal silicon arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) with the assistance of a polymer-filled shot structure is proposed. Arrayed slot waveguides were used loo replace arrayed silicon photonic wires. By carefully controlling the temperature dependence of the effective index of the polymer-filled slot waveguides, the athermal silicon AWG is realized. Analysis shows that the center wavelength shift of the AWG can be down to 1.4 pm/degrees C.

Abstract:The transparent window in optical fiber at 2-mu m waveband enables a huge potential for fiber optical communications. Intensive efforts have been devoted to pursuit of photonic devices in this new band. The arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is one of the key components for various functionalities like wavelength multiplexer, optical filter, spectrometer and so forth. However, the integrated and wavelength tunable AWG has not been realized in the 2-mu m wavelength range yet. Here, we demonstrate an 8-channel thermo-optic tunable AWG at 2 mu m via silicon photonic multi-project wafer shuttle run. The device is fully compatible with standard foundry fabrication process without customization. The TiN heater is designed for uniform waveguide heating and wavelength detuning. Experiments show that the fabricated AWG has a dense channel spacing of 1.6 nm and a minimum insertion loss of 6.1 dB. The wavelength tuning efficiency is measured to be 6.4 nm/W.

Abstract:For the first time, a new-type flat focal field arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer, with the focal signals of all wavelengths of operation focusing along a straight line, is designed based on the aberration theory and fabricated based on a newly developed negative tone epoxy Novolak resin (ENR) polymer using electron-beam direct writing. A polymeric four-channel 400GHz spacing flat focal field AWG demultiplexer is fabricated and tested. Four modal images from the output waveguides are observed and the measured transmission spectra is presented. And we make error analysis.

Abstract:A high-performance 32-channel silicon arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) with 100 GHz spacing is designed and fabricated using 180-nm lithography platform for massive production. For the arrayed waveguides, a rectangular structure compositing of a straight waveguide and a 90-degree bend waveguide is designed. Moreover, the overall structure only needs to be etched once to reduce the error introduced in the fabricating process. The experiment results show that the AWG operates with high performance within short, central, and long wavelength bands (i.e., S+C+L bands). Taking the measured central wave band (C band) as an example, a channel uniformity of 2.05 dB, a crosstalk lower than -20 dB, and an insertion loss less than 4.85 dB are achieved across the wavelength range from 1544 nm to 1576 nm. As far as we know, this fabricated silicon AWG demonstrates the best comprehensive performance for $32\times 100$ -GHz channels achieved using lithography, which will be highly desirable for wavelength division multiplexing communication and microwave photonics systems.
