Abstract:Wide-potential supercapacitor systems are highly anticipated to put aside the low-energy roadblock caused by the finite electrolysis voltage (1.23 V). However, poor electrolyte kinetics within the popular activated carbon electrodes usually downgrades the inherent high-power supply and long-cycle tolerance. To address this issue, multimodal porous carbon nanostructures are fabricated by the spontaneous cross-coupling between tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (network joint) and four aromatic amines (chain motif) with varying bond dissociation energies, followed by temperature-programmed alkali thermolysis. The representative electrode with a broad ion-accessible platform (2539 m(2) g(-1)) stands out by virtue of substantial electrosorption spaces (<1 nm micropores) and multi-level pore highways nested in open macroporous voids, enabling an instant ion-transport kinetics response (0.40 Omega s(-0.5)) and remarkable rate capability (80.4% capacitance retention up to 20 A g(-1)) in the H2SO4 electrolyte. Moreover, a LiOTf/NaOTf hybrid water-in-salt electrolyte is developed here to shift the water-splitting potential, wherein double Li+/Na+ cations can weaken strong Coulombic interactions for low migration barrier and dense interface accumulation. Consequently, the upgraded symmetric device using such concentrated aqueous medium, displays a boosted energy capacity of 39.2 Wh kg(-1)@550 W kg(-1), an extraordinary power response of 22 kW kg(-1) under high-energy delivery up to 28.2 Wh kg(-1), and a durable service lifespan (85.5% energy retention over 10 000 successive cycles). This inspiring work provides structural insights for designing carbon electrodes adaptive to safe, wide-potential but kinetically sluggish electrolytes, realizing comprehensive energy-power improvements in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Aqueous electrochemical energy storage devices are always limited in the inherited weaknesses of water, such as narrow operation temperature range and electrochemical stability window (ESW). Herein, we develop a low-cost aqueous hybrid electrochemical supercapacitor, assembled with LiMn2O4 (LMO) as the cathode and activated carbon (AC) as the anode in a novel economical Li+/K+ mixed superconcentrated (SC) aqueous electrolyte with a widened electrochemical stability window of 2.85 V, in which the hydrogen bonding between water molecules is inhibited via the confinement of water molecule by intense solvation. As a result, considering the advantages of this SC electrolyte in promoting the formation of intensive solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) analogue on AC anode and suppressing the structural destruction of LMO cathode, this supercapacitor demonstrates outstanding performances including improved working voltage (2.0–2.5 V), wide operation temperature range, high capacity (47.5 mA h g−1 at 60 °C), superb capacity retention (~ 100% at 10 A g−1 even after 20,000 cycles at 2.0 V), and ultrahigh energy density (77.9 W h kg−1 at 60 °C).

Abstract:We here report a superconcentrated potassium acetate (KAC) solution (75[Formula: see text]wt.%, K : H2O [Formula: see text] 1 : 1.8, called as “water-in-salt”) as an aqueous electrolyte to improve the working voltage and increasing capacitance in enhancing the energy density of the active carbon-based aqueous supercapacitor. The stability potential window of the superconcentrated electrolyte realizes an AC//AC symmetric supercapacitor with operating voltage of 2.0 V and excellent cyclic performance. Meanwhile, the energy density of such supercapacitor achieves about twice as high as that of the supercapacitor using normal concentration of electrolyte.

Abstract:A facile fabrication strategy is reported to obtain N/O codoped porous carbon nanosheets for purpose of ameliorating the charge transfer and accumulation in the concentrated LiTFSI (lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide) electrolyte. By tunning the feed ratio of comonomers, the porous nanosheet structure is endowed with a significant ion-adsorption surface area (1630 m2/g) and interconnected hierarchical porosity; meanwhile, high-level N/O dopants (N: 3.58 at%, O: 12.91 at%) increase the effective contact area for electrolyte ions, and further facilitate rapid ion/electron transfer. Benefiting from the advantageous features, carbon nanosheets electrode reveal an enhanced specific capacitance (375 F/g) in three-electrode configuration and the H2SO4-based device yields a high gravimetric energy density of 11.4 Wh/kg. Particularly, the ion-diffusion highways in porous carbon nanosheets contribute to the 2.25 V LiTFSI-based symmetric device with a high energy delivery up to 33.1 Wh/kg. This work offers an inspiring strategy for facile fabrication of carbon nanosheets, and demonstrates their promising application in “water-in-salt” electrolyte-based supercapacitor systems.

Abstract:LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is the most promising 5 V cathode material for Li-ion batteries because of its high voltage and good cycling behavior. We introduced LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 as a positive electrode for a hybrid electrochemical supercapacitor with an active carbon negative electrode in 1.0 M LiPF6 ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate (1: 2 in volume) solution. It has a sloping voltage profile from 2.8 to 1.5 V, delivers a capacity of 55 Wh/kg based on the total active materials, and shows a good cycling profile with capacity retention of 80 % over 1000 cycles. Abstract:A significant challenge for energy storage technologies is to realize battery-level energy density and capacitor-level durability and power density in one device. By introducing an electrolyte composed of an anionic catholyte and a cationic anolyte into a symmetric carbon-based supercapacitor configuration, a hybrid electrochemical battery-supercapacitor system using soluble redox species delivers significantly improved energy density from 20 to 42 W.h/kg (based on the electrode mass) and stable capacities for > 10(4) cycles. The ionic species formed in the electrolyte are studied by UV-Vis, Raman and mass spectroscopy to probe the energy storage mechanism. Abstract:Aqueous supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted more and more attention for their safety, fast charge/discharge capability and ultra-long life. However, the application of aqueous SCs is limited by the low working voltage due to the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of water. Herein, we report a new "water in salt" (WIS) electrolyte by dissolving potassium bis (fluorosulfonyl) amide (KFSI) in water with an ultra-high mass molar concentration of 37 mol/kg. The highly concentrated electrolyte can achieve a wide ESW of 2.8 V. The WIS electrolyte enables a safe carbon-based symmetrical supercapacitor to operate stably at 2.3 V with an ultra-long cycle life and excellent rate performance. The energy density reaches 20.5 Wh/kg at 2300 W/kg, and the capacity retention is 83.5% after 50,000 cycles at a current density of 5 A/g. This new electrolyte will be a promising candidate for future high-voltage aqueous supercapacitors.

Abstract:We present a new concept hybrid electrochemical surpercapacitor technology in which the activated carbon was used as a negative electrode and a lithium-ion intercalated compound LiMn2O4 as a positive electrode in a mild Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The charge/discharge process is associated with the transfer of Li-ion between two electrodes. The hybrid cell exhibits a sloping voltage profile from 0.8 to 1.8V, and delivers an estimated specific energy of ca. 35Wh/kg based on the total weight of the active electrode materials. The cell exhibits excellent cycling performance with less than 5% capacity loss over 20,000 cycles at 10C charge/discharge rate. The new state-of-the-art hybrid aqueous supercapacitor technology overcomes the drawbacks of electrolyte depletion during charge process of conventional hybrid supercapcitors, and also solved the major problems of poor cycling life of lithium-ion battery electrode materials in aqueous electrolyte.

Abstract:A hybrid of MnO2-nanowires and MWCNTs to be used as cathode in a supercapacitor with good electrochemical performance was prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. In this hybrid the alpha-MnO2 nanowires are well entangled with MWCNTs. The MWCNTs provide a network for fast electron transport whereas MnO2 nanowires show a fast redox response. Since gain/loss of both electrons and ions can be realized very rapidly at the same time, the hybrid has an excellent rate capability and delivers an energy density of 17.8 Wh kg(-1) at 400W kg(-1), which is maintained almost constant even at 3340W kg(-1) in 0.5 M Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The cycling behavior is very good even in the presence of oxygen. The data present great promise for the hybrid as a practical cathode material for aqueous supercapacitor. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:For the development of high-performance aqueous hybrid supercapacitor, the exploration of high-rate battery electrode and breakthrough of potential window are urgently needed. In this work, N-doped carbon coated LiMn2O4 nanoparticles (LMO@C) have been designed and successfully fabricated, and "water-in-salt" electrolyte is applied. The as-prepared LMO@C delivers a high specific capacitance of 688 F g(-1) at the scan rate of 0.5 mV s(-1) and retains 258 F g(-1) at 50 mV s(-1) as cathode in 5 M LiTFSI aqueous electrolyte. With an enlarged working potential of 2.5 V, LMO@C//AC hybrid supercapacitor shows a high energy density of 95.3 W kg(-1), and 95% of initial capacitance retention after 15,000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance suggests that the carbon coated lithium manganate nanocomposite and high-concentration electrolyte could be potential candidates for practical aqueous hybrid energy storage devices. Abstract:Supercapacitors (SCs) are emerging as efficient energy storage devices but still suffering from limited energy density compared with batteries. Electrolytes have been regarded as the key to determine the energy storage performance of SCs. However, none of the conventional electrolytes can fully meet the increasing requirements of SCs in terms of high ion conductivity, excellent stability, wide voltage window and operating temperature range, as well as environmentally friend concerns. To this end, hybrid electrolytes have sprung up in recent years, which are believed to be the candidate to solve these shortcomings. Herein, the state-of-the-art types of hybrid electrolytes for SCs, including the combination of aqueous and organic, aqueous and gel polymer, ionic liquids (ILs) and organic, and ILs and gel polymer hybrid electrolytes, are reviewed. The effects of different hybrid systems on the performance of SCs and the underlying mechanisms are among the focal points of the review, and prospects and possible directions are discussed as well to provide further insight into the future development of this field.

Abstract:Electrolyte solutions and electrode active materials, as core components of energy storage devices, have a great impact on the overall performance. Currently, supercapacitors suffer from the drawbacks of low energy density and poor cyclic stability in typical alkaline aqueous electrolytes. Herein, the ultrathin Co3O4 anode material is synthesized by a facile electrodeposition, followed by postheat treatment process. It is found that the decomposition of active materials induces reduction of energy density and specific capacitance during electrochemical testing. Therefore, a new strategy of preadding Co2+ cations to achieve the dissolution equilibrium of cobalt in active materials is proposed, which can improve the cyclic lifetime of electrode materials and broaden the operation window of electrochemical devices. Co2+ and Li+ embedded in carbon electrode during charging can enhance H+ desorption energy barrier, further hampering the critical step of bulk water electrolysis. More importantly, the highly reversible chemical conversion mechanism between Co3O4 and protons is demonstrated to be the fact that a large amount of quantum dots and second-order flaky CoO layers were in situ formed in the electrochemical reaction process, which is first discovered and reported in neutral solutions. The as-assembled device achieves a high operation voltage (2.2 V), excellent cycling stability (capacitance retention of 168% after 10 000 cycles) and ultrahigh energy density (99 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 1100 W kg(-1)). The as-prepared electrolytes and highly active electrode materials will open up new opportunities for aqueous supercapacitors with high safety, high voltage, high energy density, and long-lifespan.

Abstract:Aqueous electrolytes show the potential of application for high‐performance supercapacitors. However, their limited operating voltages set limits for widespread applications. Here, we show the feasibility of applying the Sulfolane (SL)‐saturated 3 m LiTFSI aqueous electrolytes for supercapacitors. These electrolytes possess high conductivities and wide electrochemical stable windows, demonstrating the potential applications in high‐voltage supercapacitors. Activated carbon//3 m LiTFSI SL/Water //Activated carbon supercapacitor is assembled to possess a high voltage of 2.5 V and outstanding capacitive performance (106 F g‐1 at 0.5A g‐1, >10000 cycles). Also, a high areal capacitance up to 1.52 F cm‐2 is obtained by applying a high‐mass‐loading electrode (13.06 mg cm‐2). Furthermore, a flexible symmetric semi‐solid‐state supercapacitor (2.5 V) is fabricated. And impressive performance can be obtained. Great Enhancement of Carbon Energy Storage through Narrow Pores and Hydrogen-Containing Functional Groups for Aqueous Zn-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitor

Abstract:The proton transfer mechanism on the carbon cathode surface has been considered as an effective way to boost the electrochemical performance of Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (SCs) with both ionic liquid and organic electrolytes. However, cheaper, potentially safer, and more environmental friendly supercapacitor can be achieved by using aqueous electrolyte. Herein, we introduce the proton transfer mechanism into a Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitor with the ZnSO4 aqueous electrolyte and functionalized activated carbon cathode materials (FACs). We reveal both experimentally and theoretically an enhanced performance by controlling the micropores structure and hydrogen-containing functional groups (–OH and –NH functions) of the activated carbon materials. The Zn-ion SCs with FACs exhibit a high capacitance of 435 F g−1 and good stability with 89% capacity retention over 10,000 cycles. Moreover, the proton transfer effect can be further enhanced by introducing extra hydrogen ions in the electrolyte with low pH value. The highest capacitance of 544 F g−1 is obtained at pH = 3. The proton transfer process tends to take place preferentially on the hydroxyl-groups based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The results would help to develop carbon materials for cheaper and safer Zn-ion hybrid SCs with higher energy.

Abstract:With the merits of the high energy density of batteries and power density of supercapacitors, the aqueous Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors emerge as a promising candidate for applications where both rapid energy delivery and moderate energy storage are required. However, the narrow electrochemical window of aqueous electrolytes induces severe side reactions on the Zn metal anode and shortens its lifespan. It also limits the operation voltage and energy density of the Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors. Using 'water in salt' electrolytes can effectively broaden their electrochemical windows, but this is at the expense of high cost, low ionic conductivity, and narrow temperature compatibility, compromising the electrochemical performance of the Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors.Thus, designing a new electrolyte to balance these factors towards high-performance Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors is urgent and necessary. We developed a dilute water/acetonitrile electrolyte(0.5 m Zn（CF 3 SO 3 ） 2 + 1 m LiTFSI-H 2 O/AN) for Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors,which simultaneously exhibited expanded electrochemical window, decent ionic conductivity, and broad temperature compatibility. In this electrolyte, the hydration shells and hydrogen bonds are significantly modulated by the acetonitrile and TFSI-anions. As a result, a Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitor with such an electrolyte demonstrates a high operating voltage up to 2.2 V and long lifespan beyond 120,000 cycles.

Abstract:Aqueous supercapacitor shows a narrow operating voltage range because of the limitation of the water electrolysis, resulting in low energy density. In this work, a nanoporous MnO2 entangled hierarchical porous carbon skeleton (simplified to MHPC) has been successfully prepared. Aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor has been assembled by employing the MHPC as a positive electrode, a hierarchical porous carbon skeleton (HPC) as a negative electrode, and a neutral Na2SO4 aqueous solution as electrolyte. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor can be stably charged in an aqueous medium in a wide voltage range of 0-2.5 V and delivers a maximum energy density of 20.8Wh/kg at a power density of 0.25 kW/kg and 25 kW/kg at an energy density of 11.1 Wh/kg in a 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution. This strategy provides a new idea for developing high-energy supercapacitor.
Small‐Molecular Crowding Electrolyte Enables High‐Voltage and High‐Rate Supercapacitors

Abstract:Aqueous energy storage devices attract increased attention due to their high safety, low cost, and easy maintenance. However, the low energy density caused by the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of aqueous electrolytes severely restricts their widespread applications. Herein, a new type of “small‐molecule crowding” electrolyte of 95EG‐H2O (95 wt% ethylene glycol [EG]) is proposed for the first time. Significant enhancement of water molecular stability is accomplished through the engineering of a hydrogen bond network. The small‐molecular crowding agent (EG) not only expands the ESW to 3.2 V, but also endows the electrolyte with low viscosity. As a proof‐of‐concept device, the symmetry carbon‐based supercapacitor using the newly developed electrolyte exhibits a so far record‐high operating voltage of 2.8 V, a high energy density of 58.7 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1.4 and 30.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 42 kW kg−1, and a durable lifespan exceeding 20 000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1. A new type of small‐molecular crowding electrolyte with a wide electrochemical stable window (3.2 V) and low viscosity is proposed for the first time. Significant enhancement of water molecular stability is accomplished through the engineering of a hydrogen bond network. As a proof‐of‐concept, the symmetry carbon‐based supercapacitor using this electrolyte exhibits a high operating voltage of 2.8 V.
