Abstract:Supercapacitors have high power density and a long lifespan but poor energy density in contrast with rechargeable batteries, restricting their widespread applications. Adding soluble redox-active ingredients into electrolyte is an effective strategy to increase specific energy. However, an ion-selective membrane is generally needed in such supercapacitors to avoid the mixing of anolyte and catholyte, which significantly increases the cost. Here we report a supercapacitor that consists of a modified solid Ti(3)C(2)T(x)anode and an active catholyte containing Mn2+, where the conversion between soluble Mn(2+)and solid MnO(2)occurs at the cathode, and the redox of Ti-O with the bonding/de-bonding of H(3)O(+)occurs at the anode. Impressively, this hybrid supercapacitor displays a gratifying specific energy of 43.4 W h kg(-1), without using any ion-selective membrane, and excellent cycling stability over 20 000 cycles. Moreover, we also demonstrate its superior low-temperature performance even though the electrolyte has been frozen at -70 degrees C.
Nanostructured LiMn2O4 Composite As High-Rate Cathode for High Performance Aqueous Li-ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Abstract:Nanostructured spinel LiMn2O4 and super P composite with much enhanced electrochemical performance especially ultrahigh rate capability as the cathode for aqueous hybrid supercapacitors is synthesized by ball milling commercial LiMn2O4 particles together with super P. The as-prepared composite delivers a high capacitance of 306 F g(-1) at the current density of 1 A g(-1) and superb rate ability of 228.6 F g(-1) at 40 A g(-1) in 1 M Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The capacitance of the nanostructured composite is 3.5 times higher than that of pristine LiMn2O4 even being charged and discharged 80 times faster. The excellent performances are ascribed to the nanosized LiMn2O4 well dispersed into the conductive carbon matrix. LiMn2O4 and super P composite//active carbon hybrid supercapacitor is assembled and the energy density can reach up to 21.58 Wh kg(-1) at 293.16 Wkg(-1) and 13 Wh kg(-1) at 5200 W kg(-1). The hybrid device also shows an excellent cycling performance, which retains 85% of the initial capacitance after 4500 cycles. This work provides an effectively facile way to produce high performance LiMn2O4-based cathodes for hybrid suercapacitors in practical applications.
Adapting a Kinetics-Enhanced Carbon Nanostructure to Li/Na Hybrid Water-in-Salt Electrolyte for High-Energy Aqueous Supercapacitors

Abstract:Wide-potential supercapacitor systems are highly anticipated to put aside the low-energy roadblock caused by the finite electrolysis voltage (1.23 V). However, poor electrolyte kinetics within the popular activated carbon electrodes usually downgrades the inherent high-power supply and long-cycle tolerance. To address this issue, multimodal porous carbon nanostructures are fabricated by the spontaneous cross-coupling between tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (network joint) and four aromatic amines (chain motif) with varying bond dissociation energies, followed by temperature-programmed alkali thermolysis. The representative electrode with a broad ion-accessible platform (2539 m(2) g(-1)) stands out by virtue of substantial electrosorption spaces (<1 nm micropores) and multi-level pore highways nested in open macroporous voids, enabling an instant ion-transport kinetics response (0.40 Omega s(-0.5)) and remarkable rate capability (80.4% capacitance retention up to 20 A g(-1)) in the H2SO4 electrolyte. Moreover, a LiOTf/NaOTf hybrid water-in-salt electrolyte is developed here to shift the water-splitting potential, wherein double Li+/Na+ cations can weaken strong Coulombic interactions for low migration barrier and dense interface accumulation. Consequently, the upgraded symmetric device using such concentrated aqueous medium, displays a boosted energy capacity of 39.2 Wh kg(-1)@550 W kg(-1), an extraordinary power response of 22 kW kg(-1) under high-energy delivery up to 28.2 Wh kg(-1), and a durable service lifespan (85.5% energy retention over 10 000 successive cycles). This inspiring work provides structural insights for designing carbon electrodes adaptive to safe, wide-potential but kinetically sluggish electrolytes, realizing comprehensive energy-power improvements in supercapacitors.

Abstract:A hybrid of MnO2-nanowires and MWCNTs to be used as cathode in a supercapacitor with good electrochemical performance was prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. In this hybrid the alpha-MnO2 nanowires are well entangled with MWCNTs. The MWCNTs provide a network for fast electron transport whereas MnO2 nanowires show a fast redox response. Since gain/loss of both electrons and ions can be realized very rapidly at the same time, the hybrid has an excellent rate capability and delivers an energy density of 17.8 Wh kg(-1) at 400W kg(-1), which is maintained almost constant even at 3340W kg(-1) in 0.5 M Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The cycling behavior is very good even in the presence of oxygen. The data present great promise for the hybrid as a practical cathode material for aqueous supercapacitor. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Supercapacitors now play an important role in the progress of hybrid and electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and military and space applications. There is a growing demand in developing hybrid supercapacitor systems to overcome the energy density limitations of the current generation of carbon-based supercapacitors. Here, we demonstrate 3D high-performance hybrid supercapacitors and microsupercapacitors based on graphene and MnO2 by rationally designing the electrode microstructure and combining active materials with electrolytes that operate at high voltages. This results in hybrid electrodes with ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of over 1,100 F/cm(3). This corresponds to a specific capacitance of the constituent MnO2 of 1,145 F/g, which is close to the theoretical value of 1,380 F/g. The energy density of the full device varies between 22 and 42 Wh/l depending on the device configuration, which is superior to those of commercially available double-layer supercapacitors, pseudocapacitors, lithium-ion capacitors, and hybrid supercapacitors tested under the same conditions and is comparable to that of lead acid batteries. These hybrid supercapacitors use aqueous electrolytes and are assembled in air without the need for expensive "dry rooms" required for building today's supercapacitors. Furthermore, we demonstrate a simple technique for the fabrication of supercapacitor arrays for high-voltage applications. These arrays can be integrated with solar cells for efficient energy harvesting and storage systems.
Polyaniline-assisted Growth of MnO2 Ultrathin Nanosheets on Graphene and Porous Graphene for Asymmetric Supercapacitor with Enhanced Energy Density

Abstract:To enhance the energy density of supercapacitors, an asymmetric supercapacitor was prepared by well-matched graphene@MnO2 nanosheets (G@MnO2) as cathode material and porous graphene as anode material. The hierarchical MnO2 ultrathin nanosheets uniformly decorating on graphene sheets were prepared by polyaniline-assisted growth method. The obtained G@MnO2 composite can provide fast electron transfer rate and efficient space to decrease the length of ion diffusion during energy storage. Therefore, the G@MnO2 electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance reaching 245.0 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 74.5% of retention ratio at 20 A g(-1). Meanwhile the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor delivers a high energy density of 30.6 W h kg(-1), and a remarkable energy density of 7.9 W h kg(-1) at ultrahigh power density of 11,804 W kg(-1) due to the well-assembly of G@MnO2 and porous graphene with the similar capacitance and rate performance. Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor also shows an excellent cycle life with 8.5% loss of the initial specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of the asymmetric supercapacitor of G@MnO2//porous graphene makes it an attractive candidate for high power and energy storage systems.

Abstract:Supercapacitors (SCs) are emerging as efficient energy storage devices but still suffering from limited energy density compared with batteries. Electrolytes have been regarded as the key to determine the energy storage performance of SCs. However, none of the conventional electrolytes can fully meet the increasing requirements of SCs in terms of high ion conductivity, excellent stability, wide voltage window and operating temperature range, as well as environmentally friend concerns. To this end, hybrid electrolytes have sprung up in recent years, which are believed to be the candidate to solve these shortcomings. Herein, the state-of-the-art types of hybrid electrolytes for SCs, including the combination of aqueous and organic, aqueous and gel polymer, ionic liquids (ILs) and organic, and ILs and gel polymer hybrid electrolytes, are reviewed. The effects of different hybrid systems on the performance of SCs and the underlying mechanisms are among the focal points of the review, and prospects and possible directions are discussed as well to provide further insight into the future development of this field.

Abstract:Compared with conventional secondary batteries, electrochemical supercapacitors exhibit the long cycling life and high power density, but with low energy density. In order to improve the energy density of supercapacitor, the most promising approaches are either to use an electrode material with large specific capacitance or increase its working voltage by utilizing a hybrid supercapacitor system which consist an activated carbon electrode and a battery elelctrode material (pseudo-capacitor material). The present paper introduces the development of the hybrid supercapacitor and the recent research on the electrode materials for hybrid supercapacitor. Many studies have been undertaken for the various hybrid supercapacitor systems to obtain higher energy density, coupling redox-active material electrodes with activated carbon electrode, such as activated carbon/NiOOH (FeOOH), activated carbon/graphite, activated carbon/metal oxides and activated carbon/polymer hybrid supercapacitors. Recently, Li-ion intercalated compounds Li4Ti5O12 and lithium-ion battery carbon materials are attracting much attention as positive electrode with a negative activated carbon electrode. At the same time, many researches focus on the various hybrid capacitor systems consisting of negative activated carbon electrode and positive aqueous Lithium-ion battery materials electrode, such as LiMn2O4, LiCoO2, LiTi2 (PO4)(3) and LiCo1/3Ni1/3 Mn1/3O2. These hybrid supercapacitors are improved in energy density and also with the working voltage increased, comparing with the traditional activated carbon/activated carbon electrochemical double-layer capacitor. In the paper, the research situation and development tend of several kinds of hybrid systems and the currently studied relative materials are also introduced.
A New Concept Hybrid Electrochemical Surpercapacitor: Carbon/LiMn2O4 Aqueous System

Abstract:We present a new concept hybrid electrochemical surpercapacitor technology in which the activated carbon was used as a negative electrode and a lithium-ion intercalated compound LiMn2O4 as a positive electrode in a mild Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The charge/discharge process is associated with the transfer of Li-ion between two electrodes. The hybrid cell exhibits a sloping voltage profile from 0.8 to 1.8V, and delivers an estimated specific energy of ca. 35Wh/kg based on the total weight of the active electrode materials. The cell exhibits excellent cycling performance with less than 5% capacity loss over 20,000 cycles at 10C charge/discharge rate. The new state-of-the-art hybrid aqueous supercapacitor technology overcomes the drawbacks of electrolyte depletion during charge process of conventional hybrid supercapcitors, and also solved the major problems of poor cycling life of lithium-ion battery electrode materials in aqueous electrolyte.

Abstract:Developing multifunctional energy storage systems with high specific energy, high specific power and long cycling life has been the one of the most important research directions. Compared to batteries and traditional capacitors, supercapacitors possess more balanced performance with both high specific power and long cycle-life. Nevertheless, regular supercapacitors can only achieve energy storage without harvesting energy and the energy density is still not very high compared to batteries. Therefore, combining high specific energy and high specific power, long cycle-life and even fast self-charging into one cell has been a promising direction for future energy storage devices. The multifunctional hybrid supercapacitors like asymmetric supercapacitors, batteries/supercapacitors hybrid devices and self-charging hybrid supercapacitors have been widely studied recently. Carbon based electrodes are common materials used in all kinds of energy storage devices due to their fabulous electrical and mechanical properties. In this survey, the research progress of all kinds of hybrid supercapacitors using multiple effects and their working mechanisms are briefly reviewed. And their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. MnOx nanosheets anchored on a bio-derived porous carbon framework for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:MnO2 is regarded as one of the most promising electrode materials for supercapacitors due to its high theoretical capacitance and low cost; however, it suffers from poor electronic and ionic conductivity. Herein, nanostructured manganese oxides (MnOx) are anchored on a lotus seedpod-derived carbon framework (LSCF) in situ using a one-step hydrothermal-based redox synthesis strategy. The as-prepared MnOx@LSCF hybrid features a 3D conductive network and ultrathin MnOx nanosheets with oxygen vacancies, which can enhance both electrons and ions transfer intrinsically and facilitate sufficient surface Faradaic redox reactions. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of the nanostructured MnOx and the conductive LSCF, the optimized MnOx@LSCF hybrid exhibits a high specific capacitance (406F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1) and a remarkable discharging rate capability (270F g−1 at 10 A g−1). Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor fabricated by using MnOx@LSCF as the positive electrode and LSCF as the negative electrode achieves a high energy density of 48.1 Wh kg−1 at 500 W kg−1 (which still retains 22.2 Wh kg−1 at 10 kW kg−1), and a considerable cyclic stability of 90.1% after 5000 cycles. These properties demonstrate the MnOx@LSCF hybrid would have a valuable commercial application prospects in high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:The development of novel electrochemical energy storage devices is a grand challenge. Here, an aqueous ammonium-ion hybrid supercapacitor (A-HSC), consisting of a layered δ-MnO2 based cathode, an activated carbon cloth anode, and an aqueous (NH4 )2 SO4 electrolyte is developed. The aqueous A-HSC demonstrates an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 1550 mF cm-2 with a wide voltage window of 2.0 V. An amenable peak areal energy density (861.2 μWh cm-2 ) and a decent capacitance retention (72.2% after 5000 cycles) are also achieved, surpassing traditional metal-ion hybrid supercapacitors. Ex situ characterizations reveal that NH4 + intercalation/deintercalation in the layered δ-MnO2 is accompanied by hydrogen bond formation/breaking. This work proposes a new paradigm for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Manganese oxides have been regarded as one of the most promising electrode materials for energy storage systems. Especially, they can be used as battery-type electrodes in hybrid supercapacitors to achieve high energy density and power density at the same time. In such an application, the redox reaction on the battery-type electrodes needs to speed up to match the fast charging-discharging process of the counter capacitive electrodes. Herein, we intercalated K+ ions into MnO2 to enlarge the interlayer space as channels for ion diffusion, and coated the particles with carbon layer to achieve fast charging/discharging ability. The obtained KxMnO@C particles delivered a high specific capacitance of 1039 F g−1 in 5 M LiTFSI aqueous electrolyte. Coupled with activated carbon anode, the hybrid supercapacitor showed outstanding energy and power density.

Abstract:MXenes have emerged as promising high-volumetric-capacitance supercapacitor electrode materials, whereas their voltage windows are not wide. This disadvantage prevents MXenes from being made into aqueous symmetric supercapacitors with high energy density. To attain high energy density, constructing asymmetric supercapacitors is a reliable design choice. Here, we propose a strategy to achieve high energy density of hydrogen ion aqueous-based hybrid supercapacitors by integrating a negative electrode of Ti3C2 T x MXene and a positive electrode of redox-active hydroquinone (HQ)/carbon nanotubes. The two electrodes are separated by a Nafion film that is proton permeable in H2SO4 electrolyte. Upon charging/discharging, hydrogen ions shuttle back and forth between the cathode and anode for charge compensation. The proton-induced high capacitance of MXene and HQ, along with complementary working voltage windows, simultaneously enhance the electrochemical performance of the device. Specifically, the hybrid supercapacitors operate in a 1.6 V voltage window and deliver a high energy density of 62 Wh kg-1, which substantially exceeds those of the state-of-the-art aqueous asymmetric supercapacitors reported so far. Additionally, the device exhibits excellent cycling stability and the all-solid-state planar hybrid supercapacitor displays exceptional flexibility and integration for bipolar cells to boost the capacitance and voltage output. These encouraging results provide the possibility of designing high-energy-density noble-metal-free asymmetric supercapacitors for practical applications.
Full Synergistic Contribution of Electrodeposited Three-Dimensional Nico2o4@Mno2 Nanosheet Networks Electrode for Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:The performance of supercapacitors electrode materials depends on not only their structures but also selected electrolyte as well as proper potential window. The 3D hierarchical NiCo2O4@MnO2 hybrid nanomaterial was grown on stainless-steel mesh through a two-step electrodeposition process. The resultant interconnecting network consisting of porous nanosheets possesses open geometry and porous nature. When being employed in supercapacitor, the pseudocapacitive contributions (redox reaction on surface or near-surface) of two components are taken into account comprehensively in a wide potential window. This makes such a hybrid network deliver a high specific capacitance of 913.6F/g at 0.5A/g and 12.9% capacitance loss after 3000 cycles in KOH solution. Remarkably, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on NiCo2O4@MnO2 hybrid networks as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode achieves an energy density of 37.5Wh/kg and a maximum power density of 7500W/kg. These attractive findings make this NiCo2O4@MnO2 hybrid networks hold promise in energy storage device as an efficient electrode.
A high-performance asymmetric supercapacitor based on carbon and carbon-MnO2 nanofiber electrodes

Abstract:An asymmetric supercapacitor with high energy and power densities has been fabricated using MnO2/carbon nanofiber composites as positive electrode and activated carbon nanofibers as negative electrode in Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. Both electrode materials are freestanding in nature without any conductive additives or binders and exhibit outstanding electrochemical performances. The as-assembled asymmetric supercapacitor with optimal mass ratio can be operated reversibly over a wide voltage range of 0-2.0 V, and presents a maximum energy density of 30.6 Wh kg(-1), which is much higher than those of symmetric supercapacitors. More-over, the supercapacitor exhibits excellent rate capability (high power density of 20.8 kW kg(-1) at 8.7 Wh kg(-1)) and long-term cycling stability with only 6% loss of its initial capacitance after 5000 cycles. These attractive results make these freestanding materials promising for applications in aqueous electrolyte-based asymmetric supercapacitors with high energy and power densities delivery. Here, we propose a new configuration of zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors composed of mild aqueous ZnSO 4 electrolyte, activated carbon (AC) anode and V 2 O 5 cathode. The operating voltage of the hybrid supercapacitor can reach to 2 V in the aqueous electrolyte when the mass ratio of AC to V 2 O 5 is 1:1. The maximum energy density of zinc-ion hybrid capacitor is about 3.9 times higher than that of AC symmetric supercapacitor, while its maximum power density is 1.7 times higher than that of zinc-ion battery. The capacity retention of the hybrid supercapacitors is 97.3% over 6000 charge–discharge cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . Compared with MnO 2 zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors system, the stable nature of V 2 O 5 allows new zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors system to achieve a better cycling performance. The unique electrochemical performance, low cost and high safety of the new zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor endow it with a very wide range of applications in consumer electronics and stationary energy storage.

Abstract:Commercial electrochemical supercapacitors are expensive, toxic, and have inadequate energy density at a high power density. To overcome above complications, researchers are focusing on aqueous magnesium-ion-based supercapacitors via bivalent Mg2+ ions. Herein, the facile hydrothermal method was employed for the synthesis of the β-MnO2 and α-Fe2O3 electrodes, which are confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) techniques. We fabricated a Mg2+-based hybrid supercapacitor (Mg-HSC) with β-MnO2 as a cathode, α-Fe2O3 as an anode, and 1 M MgSO4 as an electrolyte; β-MnO2 exhibited a specific capacitance of 1867 F/g while α-Fe2O3 showed 1896 F/g. The good performance is attributed to small ions of Mg2+ and its bivalent nature. The Mg-HSC exhibited excellent specific capacitance of 230.0 F/g at 1 A/g current density in a wide voltage range of 0 to 1.7 V. The Mg-HSC showed 82.1 Wh/kg energy density at 6153.8 W/kg power density. Moreover, this configured device showed superior long-term cycling stability with capacitance retention of >96.2% over 5000 cycles at 15 A/g current density. The facile synthesis method of electrode materials and the bivalent MgSO4 yield into the high-performance hybrid supercapacitor which can compete with current electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Hybrid supercapacitors, as emerging energy storage devices, have gained much attention in recent years due to their high energy density, fast charge/discharge and long cyclabilities. Among the wide range of systems covered by this topic, low cost, environmental friendliness and high power provide MnO2 with great characteristics to be a competitive candidate. The present work reports a hybrid aqueous supercapacitor system using a commercial activated carbon as the negative electrode and a synthesized manganese dioxide as the positive electrode. Two manganese dioxide polymorphs (α-MnO2 and δ-MnO2) were tested in different neutral and basic aqueous electrolytes. In this way, full cell systems that reached an energy density of 15.6 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1 kW kg−1 were achieved. The electrode–electrolyte combination explored in this study exhibits excellent performance without losing capacity after 5000 charge/discharge cycles, leading to a promising approach towards more sustainable, high-performance energy storage systems.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have emerged as one of the most attractive electro-chemical storage systems with unique characteristics featuring high power delivery and long-term cycling stability. Manganese oxides (MnO2) have particularly received increasing attention owing to their high specific capacitance, low cost, natural abundance, and environmental benignity. Nanoscale MnO2 structures should incorporate highly porous and electrically conductive materials to form hybrid or composite nanostructures in order to maximize their capabilities and electrochemical performance. The rapid development of MnO2-based nanocomposites for high-performance supercapacitors in recent years has been reviewed in terms of the charge storage mechanism, materials science, and smart cell assembly. This review article aims to summarize the latest progress in MnO2-based nanocomposite electrodes to provide guidance for the design, manufacturing, and assembly of high-performance supercapacitors. The review starts with the discussion of charge storage mechanisms of MnO2-based materials. Subsequent emphasis is placed on the significant progress of MnO2-based heterogeneous nanocomposites, followed by the development of asymmetric supercapacitors assembled with the MnO2-based nanocomposites. Finally, perspectives and challenging issues regarding the rational design and synthesis of MnO2-based nanocomposites for high-performance supercapacitors are discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
