Abstract:With the developing technologies of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, intelligent IoT (iIoT) is prevailing currently. Design and implementation of integrated IoT nodes with continuous perception capability are indispensable to realize various smart terminal devices, which would also be vital to reduce the power consumption, improve the real-time performance, and enhance the security/privacy of the IoT system. In this paper, we present the architecture of “Sensing with Computing” and its chip design for smart sensing applications, which would support multi-modal perception signal processing with multi-dimension extension ability. Specially, we explore the analog/mixed-signal circuit designs and algorithm-hardware co-design methodologies for perception signal processing, and we also study the multi-modal integration of novel sensors and their interface technologies. Additionally, some multi-modal smart sensing systems with “Sensing + Computing in Memory” mixed-signal chips would be fabricated, which would support typical always-on smart sensing tasks.

Abstract:Sensors play a vital role in our daily lives and are an essential component for Internet of Things (IoT) based systems as they enable the IoT to collect data to take smart and intelligent decisions. Recent advances in IoT systems, applications, and technologies, including industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), are being supported by a wide range of different types of sensors based on artificial intelligence (AI). These smart AI-based sensors are typically characterized by onboard intelligence and have the ability to communicate collaboratively or through the Internet. To achieve the high level of automation required in today's smart IoT applications, sensors incorporated into nodes must be efficient, intelligent, context-aware, reliable, accurate, and connected. Such sensors must also be robust, safety- and privacy-aware for users interacting with them. Sensors leveraging advanced AI technologies, new capabilities have recently emerged which have the potential to detect, identify, and avoid performance degradation and discover new patterns. Along with knowledge from complex sensor datasets, they can promote product innovation, improve operation level, and open up novel business models. We review sensors, smart data processing, communication protocol, and artificial intelligence which will enable the deployment of AI-based sensors for next-generation IoT applications.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed daily life through enhanced internet and communication technologies. Intelligent sensors, like temperature and humidity sensors, have revolutionized smart homes, enabling remote control and enhancing comfort. In agriculture, these sensors monitor soil moisture and crop conditions, optimizing farming practices for increased yields and sustainability. Healthcare benefits from the IoT with sensors in medical devices and wearables, offering real-time patient monitoring and cost reduction. Logistics employs intelligent sensors to track goods, boosting supply chain efficiency. Projects like IoT-based road analysis systems and pest monitoring exemplify data collection and intelligent decision-making, benefiting urban management and agriculture. It can be seen that intelligent sensors have an irreplaceable role in the Internet of Things, so this paper will introduce the technology and working principles of intelligent sensors and discuss the cross-domain applications and future expectations of intelligent sensors. Through literature analysis, it can be concluded that after the intelligent sensor receives the external signal, it will convert the signal into a physical signal related to the measured parameters and process, store, and communicate it so as to realize the detection, control, and data transmission of the environment. This means that intelligent sensors can be widely used in industrial production, environmental monitoring, medical health, and other fields.

Abstract:In recent years, the advancement of sensor technology has led to the generation of heterogeneous Internet-of-Things (IoT) data by smart cities. Thus, the development and deployment of various aspects of IoT-based applications are necessary to mine the potential value of data to the benefit of people and their lives. However, the variety, volume, heterogeneity, and real-time nature of data obtained from smart cities pose considerable challenges. In this paper, we propose a semantic framework that integrates the IoT with machine learning for smart cities. The proposed framework retrieves and models urban data for certain kinds of IoT applications based on semantic and machine-learning technologies. Moreover, we propose two case studies: pollution detection from vehicles and traffic pattern detection. The experimental results show that our system is scalable and capable of accommodating a large number of urban regions with different types of IoT applications.
A smart‐integrated IoT module for intelligent transportation in oil industry

Abstract:<p>Apart from being fundamental in industry 4.0, IoT also extends its capability to smart transportation in an oil pipeline system. The initiation of the Internet of Things has witnessed incredible success in the application of wireless sensor networks and ubiquitous computing for various smart‐control applications. In the oil industry, for smooth, accident‐less, long‐range pipeline transportation, data communication through wireless sensor networks plays a predominant role in IoT. For the prominent integration with the internet, it is essential to fabricate a middleware by overcoming the shortcomings like interoperability and heterogeneity. But yet there is no compact, integrated IoT module with power and energy‐efficient configuration to take the modern technology to the next level of innovation of wireless network systems with embedded sensors in the oil industry. Hence, this paper presents a novel, unique‐integrated compact, smart IoT module that aims at reducing costs associated with commercial data loggers and sensing modules, requiring control and data storage that need proprietary software. Other usual drawbacks of commercial solutions are limited sensor connections with low expansion flexibility and maintenance restricted to the manufacturer and long cable communication distances. The proposed integrated smart IoT module operation relies on free software, allowing online distribution and communication with a cloud server wirelessly via Wi‐Fi through message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) and hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) for efficient data communication. A secured high‐level engineering web page called Web Monitor was developed for online data analysis with real‐time monitoring and control to afford intelligent transportation in oil pipelines. Further, in this work, the real‐time validation of the proposed smart IoT module performance in the oil pipeline during abnormal circumstances is also provided. Through this integrated IoT module, the entire oil pipeline network with each substation can be interconnected and controlled beneficial with its intelligence, low cost, and portability.</p>

Abstract:Modern sensors find their wide usage in a variety of applications such as robotics, navigation, automation, remote sensing, underwater imaging, etc. and in recent years the sensors with advanced techniques such as the artificial intelligence (AI) play a significant role in the field of remote sensing and smart agriculture. The AI enabled sensors work as smart sensors and additionally the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has resulted into very useful tools in the field of agriculture by making available different types of sensor-based equipment and devices. In this paper, we have focused on an extensive study of the advances in smart sensors and IoT, employed in remote sensing and agriculture applications such as the assessment of weather conditions and soil quality; the crop monitoring; the use of robots for harvesting and weeding; the employment of drones. Abstract:The integration of LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) technology with both active and passive sensors presents a transformative opportunity for the development of smart home systems. This paper explores how active sensors, such as motion detectors and ultrasonic sensors, and passive sensors, including temperature and humidity sensors, work together to enhance connectivity and efficiency within diverse environments while addressing the challenges of modern living. By leveraging LoRaWAN long-range capabilities and low power consumption, the proposed framework enables effective data transmission from remote sensors, facilitating applications such as smart agriculture, environmental monitoring, and comprehensive home automation. Active sensors emit energy to detect changes in their surroundings, providing real-time data crucial for security and automation, while passive sensors capture ambient energy to monitor environmental conditions, ensuring resource efficiency and user comfort. The synergy between LoRaWAN and these various sensor types promotes innovation, contributing to a more responsive and sustainable living experience. Furthermore, this research highlights the adaptability of the proposed system, allowing for seamless integration of new devices and advanced functionalities. Abstract:IoT is a reflective system of connecting the real-world objects that are accessed via the network. Sensors are involved for the data collection, in which the objects are having their own IP address and having the ability to access and transmit the resources through the Internet without manual performance. It is an architectural framework that offers integration and transfers the information between the computational devices. Its application areas are wide spread across smart homes, wearables, automation of vehicles, industrial Internet, smart cities, smart agriculture, smart retail, energy engagement, poultry and farming. In intelligent agriculture circumstances, to control the progress and to attain better yield in harvests are the primary focuses of this research work. The objective is to present new methodologies for the smart agricultural system, for monitoring and tracking, manufacturing of crops, import and export process, sales details, etc. By implementing the IoT-based smart sensors for the crop management, one can efficiently conquer the impulse of difficult and changing climate, the geographical disability, natural calamity, plagues and ailments about the crop. This research work proposes a cloud platform for smart agriculture data with wireless sensor network based on IOT. In cloud, intelligent production information is stored securely and made open for the authorized users.

Abstract:Smart and sensing systems represent a significant research theme that has motivated a number of research initiatives around the world. Smart systems typically consist of different components, including sensors for signal acquisition, communication units for data transmission between components, control, and management units for decision-making, and actuators to perform the appropriate actions. They have impacted applications in many fields, such as manufacturing, healthcare, energy, environment, logistic, defence, monitoring, and mobility. As the complexity of such systems continue to grow, the challenge of developing integrated smart and sensing systems has surpassed the design complexity of their individual components. A smart and sensing system may include a large number of heterogeneous components, subsystems, smart and intelligent sensors, and may combine several correlated functionalities. Thus, the main issue of developing smart and sensing systems lies in the complexity to integrate and to manage these different components, technologies, and goals across a wide spectrum. In recent years, the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) has amplified the capacity of sensing the world through a network of connected devices using the existing network infrastructure. Grouping together smart and sensing systems in an IoT setting to form large-scale distributed cyber-physical systems has tremendous potential in bringing smart systems to many application domains.

Abstract:Smart sensors differ from conventional ones in their ability to process a high amount of data close to the source and in the ability to communicate in a bidirectional way. In this article, we show the reasons to make sensors smart, identify the design challenges of the software running on smart sensors, and put forth our software platform. In our solution, we adopt the event-driven components with bidirectional interface and provide alternative scheduling policies for specific applications. This component infrastructure also supports diversity of connections by including a hierarchical communication model. Additionally, we present our solutions to improve the reliability of these software systems.

Abstract:Sensor deployments in Smart Homes have long reached commercial relevance for applications such as home automation, home safety or energy consumption awareness and reduction. Nevertheless, due to the heterogeneity of sensor devices and gateways, data integration is still a costly and timeconsuming process. In this paper we propose the Smart Home Crawler Framework that (1) provides a common semantic abstraction from the underlying sensor and gateway technologies, and (2) accelerates the integration of new devices by applying machine learning techniques for linking discovered devices to a semantic data model. We present a first prototype that was demonstrated at ICT 2018. The prototype was built as a domainspecific crawling component for IoTCrawler, a secure and privacy-preserving search engine for the Internet of Things.
