A Study on the Intellectual Origins of Ebenezer Howard's Garden City

Abstract:The Garden City theory developed by Ebenezer Howard in the late nineteenth century is a unique combination of multiple reformist schemes since the start of the century.It predicts the development and management of a new town,i.e.the Garden City with distinctly new organization and form,to solicit fundamental social and structural change in England in terms of urban life style in relations to nature and country.This paper studies the evolution of Howard's idea of the Garden City,and seeks to identify the intellectual and historical origins of the idea mainly from three regards:the impact of various reformist schemes and theories developed in the nineteenth century,the tradition and legacies of the making of new communities and related practices,and Howard's personal experiences.It concludes with a summary of key features of the Garden City theory,offering explanations for its wide acceptance and immediate realization.
