Abstract:Optical solitons are wavepackets that can sustain the shape via a nonlinear refractive index potential well. They exist in a wide range of optical systems spanning optical fibers, fiber lasers and parametric oscillators. Recently, a new type optical solitons have been observed in coherently pumped high-Q microcavities. The observation of microcavity optical solitons provides a well-controlled experimental platform to study soliton physics. Microcavity optical solitons also endow an array of highly stable spectral lines in the frequency domain, which advance the miniaturization of frequency comb systems. These soliton microcombs have been self-reference stabilized and could enable many chip-based applications including optical frequency synthesizers, optical atomic clocks, data transmission, spectrometer and LiDAR in the near future. Here, the fundamental of microcavity optical solitons was introduced, with a special focus on soliton interaction dynamics. The microcavity dual-comb measurement based applications in fast imaging and mid-infrared gas spectroscopy were also discussed.

Abstract:A coherently driven Kerr optical cavity is able to sustain dissipative temporal solitons, enabling all-optical data storage buffers and broadband frequency combs. Kerr solitons are balanced through an energy exchange with the pump field. Improving the pump-to-soliton energy conversion is of great importance for practical applications, but remains an outstanding challenge owing to a limited pump–soliton temporal overlap. Here we report the discovery of temporal solitons in mutually coupled cavities instead of a traditional single cavity. A pump recycling strategy is proposed, to greatly improve the power utilization efficiency. Using macroscale optical fibre-ring cavities, which share the same physical model as miniature microresonators, we demonstrate nearly 100% pump recycling and the ability to break the efficiency limit of a single cavity. This study could greatly extend the applications of temporal cavity solitons and provides an attractive platform for exploring the complex nonlinear dynamics in coupled cavity systems.

Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:Laser frequency combs are enabling some of the most exciting scientific endeavours in the 21st century, ranging from the development of optical clocks to the calibration of the astronomical spectrographs used for searching Earth-like exoplanets. Today, dissipative Kerr solitons generated in microresonators offer the prospect of attaining frequency combs in miniaturized systems by capitalizing on advances in photonic integration. Most of the applications based on soliton microcombs rely on tuning a continuous-wave laser into a longitudinal mode of a microresonator whose dimensions are engineered to display anomalous dispersion at the pump laser frequency. In this configuration, however, nonlinear physics precludes from attaining dissipative Kerr solitons with high power conversion efficiency, with typical comb powers amounting to ~1% of the available laser power. Here, we demonstrate that this fundamental limitation can be overcome by inducing a controllable frequency shift to a selected cavity resonance. Experimentally, we realize this shift using two linearly coupled anomalous-dispersion microresonators (a photonic molecule), resulting in a coherent dissipative Kerr soliton with a conversion efficiency exceeding 50% and excellent line spacing stability. We describe the physical soliton dynamics in this configuration, and discover the system displays unusual characteristics, such as the possibility to backwards initiate solitons and stable operation with a blue detuned pump laser. By optimizing the microcomb power available on chip, these results facilitate the practical implementation of a scalable integrated photonic architecture for energy-efficient applications.

Abstract:Optical resonators with high-quality factors (Q-factor) constitute the main building block for many photonic devices capitalizing on light-matter interactions, ranging from light emitters to biochemical sensors. While a high Q-factor enhances light-matter interactions, it also limits the device operation bandwidth. Here we propose and numerically analyze a generic coupling scheme to overcome the apparent trade-off. By using an orthogonal grating, broadband optical coupling into high-Q cavities of diverse geometric configurations can be achieved. As an example, the approach is applied to demonstrate over a 28-fold optical absorption enhancement across a 150 nm band around 900 nm wavelength in single-layer graphene embedded inside a Fabry-Perot cavity.
Dissipative Kerr Solitons in an Active Microcavity

Abstract:The emergence of soliton microcombs has catalyzed significant advancements in a wide range of applications, including optical communication, precision metrology, and astronomical calibration. Despite the existing benefits, soliton microcombs generated in passive microcavities often face significant limitations in promoting comb power and nonlinear efficiency. On the other hand, generating soliton combs within active microresonators has remained challenging due to the confined cavity volume for doping and substantial opto-thermal effects. In this study, we successfully achieve dissipative Kerr solitons in an active microcavity by sintering erbium ions (Er3+) onto its surface. The introduction of Er3+ significantly boosts the power of the microcomb within the cavity, bypassing the traditional requirement for an external erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and paving the way toward high quality soliton microcomb integration. By operating the system below the lasing threshold, the actively optical-assisted microcomb maintains the low-noise advantages of coherently driven solitons. Our research demonstrates that the optical excitation of Er3+ facilitates the tunability of cavity losses, thereby providing a method to dynamically control the soliton properties. This enables soliton operation at a lower threshold, with a larger soliton access range, wider comb span, and enhanced comb power. The increased intracavity power and enhanced Kerr nonlinear process also enable the generation of EDFA-free solitons in a low-Q microcavity, paving the way for simplifying microcomb devices. These findings open new avenues for the formation of active cavity solitons (ACSs), where the combination of coherent and incoherent pumping within a microcavity yields superior performance and increased practicality.

Abstract:Highly efficient frequency doubling of a continuous-wave Yb-doped fiber laser with a passively-locked enhancement cavity is achieved. The increase in efficiency is a result of improved transverse mode matching between the fiber and doubling cavities, which is enabled by an alignment method presented here. An optical conversion efficiency as high as 36.8% from a launched 976nm diode pump to a 532 nm green laser is obtained. The maximum 532 nm output is 24.5 W, which is limited by the onset of parasitic oscillations in the fiber laser.
Soliton frequency comb generation in a low Q microcavity coupled to a gain microcavity

Abstract:Soliton frequency comb generation in coupled nonlinear microcavities is attractive because a coupled microcavity offers more flexibility and possibilities compared to a single nonlinear microcavity. In this paper, we investigate how an amplifying auxiliary cavity affects the bistability region of the main cavity and soliton frequency comb generation. When the auxiliary cavity has a small gain, it can partially compensate for the loss of the main cavity allowing the generation of soliton combs with a relatively low Q-factor in the main cavity. A low Q-factor microcavity would reduce the difficulty of fabrication and extend the microcavity platform to different types of materials. However, if the gain of the auxiliary cavity is too large, a frequency comb cannot be generated because the coupled nonlinear microcavity system is no longer dissipative. Our results provide a theoretical understanding and experimental guidance for the bistability region and soliton frequency comb generation in coupled nonlinear microcavities with an amplifying auxiliary cavity. The results will facilitate the development of chip-scale integrated optical frequency comb sources.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons generated in high-Q optical microresonators provide unique opportunities for different up-to-date applications. Increasing the generation efficiency of of such signals is a problem of paramount importance. We provided comprehensive analysis and found optimal conditions providing maximal pump-to-comb conversion efficiency (up to 100\%) for the cases of a free-running and self-injection-locked pump lasers. The dependence of the optimal coupling rate on the pump power was revealed, in addition to the trade-off relations balancing the efficiency and the comb line number. The methods to increase the total comb power were also discussed.

Abstract:Microcomb generation with simultaneous χ2 and χ3 nonlinearities brings new possibilities for ultrabroadband and potentially self-referenced integrated comb sources. However, the evolution of the intracavity field involving multiple nonlinear processes shows complex dynamics that are still poorly understood. Here, we report on strong soliton regulation induced by fundamental–second-harmonic（FD-SH） mode coupling. The formation of solitons from chaos is extensively investigated based on coupled Lugiato–Lefever equations. The soliton generation shows more deterministic behaviors in the presence of FD-SH mode interaction, which is in sharp contrast with the usual cases where the soliton number and relative locations are stochastic. Deterministic single soliton transition, soliton binding, and prohibition are observed, depending on the phase-matching condition and coupling coefficient between the fundamental and second-harmonic waves. Our finding provides important new insights into the soliton dynamics in microcavities with simultaneous χ~2and χ~3nonlinearities and can be immediate guidance for broadband soliton comb generation with such platforms.
Gain-assisted chiral soliton microcombs

Abstract:The emerging microresonator-based frequency combs revolutionize a broad range of applications from optical communications to astronomical calibration. Despite of their significant merits, low energy efficiency and the lack of all-optical dynamical control severely hinder the transfer of microcomb system to real-world applications. Here, by introducing active lasing medium into the soliton microcomb, for the first time, we experimentally achieve the chiral soliton with agile on-off switch and tunable dual-comb generation in a packaged microresonator. It is found that such a microresonator enables a soliton slingshot effect, the rapid soliton formation arising from the extra energy accumulation induced by inter-modal couplings. Moreover, tuning the erbium gain can generate versatile multi-soliton states, and extend the soliton operation window to a remarkable range over 18 GHz detuning. Finally, the gain-assisted chirality of counterpropagating soliton is demonstrated, which enables an unprecedented fast on-off switching of soliton microcombs. The non-trivial chiral soliton formation with active controllability inspires new paradigms of miniature optical frequency combs and brings the fast tunable soliton tools within reach.

By merging their properties with the physics of multimode systems<a href="/articles/s41566-019-0379-5#ref-CR29">29</a>, we provide a new paradigm for soliton generation and control in microcavities. We demonstrate 50-nm-wide bright soliton combs induced at average powers more than one order of magnitude lower than the Lugiato–Lefever soliton power threshold<a href="/articles/s41566-019-0379-5#ref-CR22">22</a>, measuring a mode efficiency of 75% versus the theoretical limit of 5% for bright Lugiato–Lefever solitons<a href="/articles/s41566-019-0379-5#ref-CR23">23</a>. Finally, we can tune the repetition rate by well over a megahertz without any active feedback.

Silicon carbide soliton microcomb generation for narrow-grid optical communications

Abstract:A soliton microcomb can play a crucial role in narrow-grid optical communications by replacing many independently operated lasers in wavelength-division multiplexing systems. In this work, we designed and demonstrated power-efficient soliton microcombs with 100-GHz free spectral range in an integrated 4H-SiC platform for the first time. The combination of enabling technologies, including efficient fiber coupling (3 dB insertion loss), high-quality-factor microrings (intrinsic quality factors up to 5.7 million), and the employment of the Raman effect for adiabatic accessing of the soliton state, has enabled the demonstration of soliton pump power as low as 6 mW while supporting comb powers above -20 dBm per line near the pump wavelength.

Abstract:Microresonator-based optical frequency combs have been greatly developed in the last decade and have shown great potential for many applications. A dual-comb scheme is usually required for lidar ranging, spectroscopy, spectrometer and microwave photonic channelizer. However, dual-comb generation with microresonators would require doubled hardware resources and more complex feedback control. Here we propose a novel scheme for dual-comb generation with a single laser diode self-injection locked to a single microresonator. The output of the laser diode is split and pumps the microresonator in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. The scheme is investigated intensely through numerical simulations based on a set of coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. Turnkey counter-propagating single soliton generation and repetition rate tuning are demonstrated.
Single soliton microcombs based on optimized ultra-high Q Si3N4 optical microcavities

Abstract:On-chip Si3N4 microcavities composed of multi-mode waveguides can achieve high-quality factor and anomalous dispersion simultaneously, which is necessary for solitons generation. It has been proven to be a promising platform for compact optical (Kerr) frequency comb generation. To further reduce the threshold power for generating a single soliton microcomb, a racetrack Si3N4 microcavity with Euler bends is reported. Compared with traditional racetrack microcavities, Euler bending can significantly suppress the sudden change in bending radius at the waveguide connection, which suppresses mode interactions and reduces propagation losses, resulting in an increase in Q factor value. Based on this racetrack microcavity, using the auxiliary laser heating method, a single soliton frequency comb with a repetition rate of 34 GHz and a 3 dB bandwidth exceeding 18 nm (corresponding to a pulse duration of 143 fs) can be generated using only a 19 mW pump laser (estimated on-chip pump power below 10 mW). The optimized racetrack microcavities can be building blocks for integrated photonics systems.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKS) have long been suffering from poor power conversion efficiency when driven by continuous-wave lasers. By deriving the critical coupling condition of a multimode nonlinear optics system in a generalized theoretical framework, two efficiency limitations of the conventional pump method of DKS are revealed: the effective coupling rate is too small and is also power-dependent. A general approach is provided to resolve this challenge by introducing two types of nonlinear couplers to couple the soliton cavity and CW input through nonlinear processes. The collective coupler opens multiple coupling channels and the self-adaptive coupler builds a power-independent effective external coupling rate to the DKS for approaching the generalized critical coupling condition, which promises near-unity power conversion efficiencies. For instance, a conversion efficiency exceeding 90% is predicted for aluminum nitride microrings with a nonlinear coupler utilizing second-harmonic generation. The mechanism applies to various nonlinear processes, including Raman and Brillouin scattering, and thus paves the way for micro-solitons toward practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Dissipative Kerr soliton generation using self-injection-locked III-V lasers has enabled fully integrated hybrid microcombs that operate in turnkey mode and can access microwave repetition rates. Yet, continuous-wave-driven soliton microcombs exhibit low energy conversion efficiency and high optical power threshold, especially when the repetition frequencies are within the microwave range that is convenient for direct detection with off-the-shelf electronics. Here, by actively switching the bias current of injection-locked III-V semiconductor lasers with switching frequencies in the X-band and K-band microwave ranges, we pulse-pump both crystalline and integrated microresonators with picosecond laser pulses, generating soliton microcombs with stable repetition rates and lowering the required average pumping power by one order of magnitude to a record-setting level of a few milliwatts. In addition, we unveil the critical role of the phase profile of the pumping pulses, and implement phase engineering on the pulsed pumping scheme, which allows for the robust generation and the stable trapping of solitons on intracavity pulse pedestals. Our work leverages the advantages of the gain switching and the pulse pumping techniques, and establishes the merits of combining distinct compact comb platforms that enhance the potential of energy-efficient chipscale microcombs.
