Abstract:The heating demand in actual residential buildings is not equal between different rooms and times. Such non-uniformity in spatial and temporal terms has a direct impact on the applicability, performance, and efficiency of heating systems, and the associated energy consumption. When people participate more in system design and regulation, such as in rural detached houses in northern China, the significance of recognizing the demand characteristics is more evident. In-depth analysis and quantitative evaluation of intermittent and distribution characteristics are essential. This study sought to propose a new approach to identify and evaluate actual demands characteristics, and their distribution in a quantitative and graphical manner. First, comprehensive coefficients, spatial-temporal-utilization factor (STUF), and spatial-temporal-utilization coefficient (STUC) were proposed to quantify heating demand and evaluate the disparity between actual partial heating and "full-time, full-space" heating. Thereafter, the Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient were introduced and modified to visually describe the distribution among rooms and temporal variation, and quantify the distribution non-uniformity. Four houses were used to evaluate this method. By using this method, the heating demand of each room, the overall heating intensity of a house, the proportion of time when heating is not required, and its non-uniformity in spatial and temporal terms can be identified and evaluated. The results verified the non-uniformity of the heating demand and the implication of a noticeable energy-saving potential by the actual intermittent heating behavior. This method could be used to effectively quantify the heating demand and evaluate its non-uniform degree. Based on these quantitative findings, further research can be conducted to promote system design and building energy savings.
