Abstract:The locations of sensor nodes are very important to many wireless sensor networks (WSNs). When WSNs are deployed in hostile environments, two issues about sensors’ locations need to be considered. First, attackers may attack the localization process to make estimated locations incorrect. Second, since sensor nodes may be compromised, the base station (BS) may not trust the locations reported by sensor nodes. Researchers have proposed two techniques, secure localization and location verification, to solve these two issues, respectively. In this paper, we present a survey of current work on both secure localization and location verification. We first describe the attacks against localization and location verification, and then we classify and describe existing solutions. We also implement typical secure localization algorithms of one popular category and study their performance by simulations.
Localizing jammers in wireless networks

Abstract:The open nature of wireless communication makes it easy for adversaries to either inject random signals to wireless channels harming the network availability, or eavesdrop on the communication breaching the location privacy. Those threats are challenging to cope with, because most of them cannot be addressed by traditional cryptographic methods. One of the attacks that can easily imperil the availability of networks is jamming attacks. An adversary can launch a jamming attack either by bypassing MAC-layer protocols and keeping sending packets, or by emitting radio signals to a particular channel. To cope with jamming attacks, in this dissertation, we focus on developing mechanisms to localize jammers. We examine how jammers affect networks in terms of signal strength, nodes' communication range, and network topologies, and present how to measure these jamming effects. To localize a jammer, we design an Adaptive Least-Squares-based (LSQ-based) algorithm which performs localization by exploiting the changes of communication range. Then, to further improve the localization accuracy, we propose an error minimizing framework that can localize not only one but also multiple jammers through utilizing the strength of jamming signals (JSS). To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed localization schemes, we conducted real-world experiments using a testbed of MicaZ, and then carried out extensive performance studies in large-scale networks by simulation. Another problem that cannot be solved by traditional cryptographic method is the location privacy issue. We study this issue in wireless sensor network because the locations of the sink nodes are critically important to the viability of wireless networks, and such information can be easily determined by attackers. For instance, attackers can eavesdrop on the network communication at several spots and trace back to the sink nodes. Then, they can destroy the sink nodes physically to disable the data collection or dissemination. In this dissertation, we examine the sink location privacy problem from both the attack and defense sides. On the attack side, we present two types of Zeroing-In attacks which allow attackers to identify the sink location by estimating the hop count or the arrival time of a broadcast packet at a few spots in the network. To cope with the Zeroing-In attacks, we propose a directed-walk-based scheme and validate that it is effective in deceiving adversaries at modest energy costs.

Abstract:Correct node position information is the prerequisite and foundation of many sensor network modules, such as network building and maintenance, monitoring event localization, and target tracking. The node localization process is vulnerable to diverse attacks. In resource-constrained sensor networks, how to securely and effectively position sensor's coordinates is one of the most challenging security problems. This paper presents various attacks against different node localization systems, analyses the principles, characteristics, and limitations of recent representative secure localization countermeasures. Finally, the future research direction is summarized.
Localizing Multiple Jamming Attackers in Wireless Networks

Abstract:Jamming attacks and unintentional radio interference are one of the most urgent threats harming the dependability of wireless communication and endangering the successful deployment of pervasive applications built on top of wireless networks. Unlike the traditional approaches focusing on developing jamming defense techniques without considering the location of jammers, we take a different viewpoint that the jammers' position should be identified and exploited for building a wide range of defense strategies to alleviate jamming. In this paper, we address the problem of localizing multiple jamming attackers coexisting in wireless networks by leveraging the network topology changes caused by jamming. We systematically analyze the jamming effects and develop a framework that can partition network topology into clusters and can successfully estimate the positions of multiple jammers even when their jamming areas are overlapping. Our experiments on a multi-hop network setup using MicaZ sensor nodes validate the feasibility of real-time collection of network topology changes under jamming and our extensive simulation results demonstrate that our approach is highly effective in localizing multiple attackers with or without the prior knowledge of the order that the jammers are turned on.

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, reliable location information is not only necessary to event reports but also crucial to network functionalities such as geographic routing, distributed information storage/retrieval. However, sensors could be compromised by adversaries to claim arbitrary locations to disrupt the normal network operation. Thus, location verification should be carried out for security considerations. Due to the importance of the problem, we propose a highly efficient algorithm that effectively detects false location claims from compromised sensors. Extensive analysis and simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm is energy-efficient and resilient against adversaries.

Abstract:The infrastructure provided by wireless networks promises to have a significant impact on the way computing is performed. Not only will information be available while we are on the go, but new locationaware computing paradigms along with location-sensitive security policies will emerge. Already, many techniques have emerged to provide the ability to localize a communicating device [?], [1]–[4]. Enforcement of location-aware security policies (e.g., this laptop should not be taken out of this building, or this file should not be opened outside of a secure room) requires trusted location information. As more of these location-dependent services get deployed, the very mechanisms that provide location information will become the target of misuse and attacks. Therefore, as we move forward with deploying wireless systems that support location services, it is prudent to integrate security into the protection of localization techniques. The purpose of this paper is to examine the problem of secure localization from a viewpoint different from traditional network security services. In addition to the different attacks and misuse faced by wireless localization mechanisms, it is our viewpoint that these vulnerabilities can be mitigated by exploiting the redundancy present in typical wireless deployments. Rather than introducing countermeasures for every possible attack, our approach is to provide localization-specific, attack-tolerant mechanisms that shield the localization infrastructure from threats that bypass traditional security defenses. The idea is to live with bad nodes rather than eliminate all possible bad nodes.

Abstract:As one of the key technologies in wireless sensor networks (WSN), localization is the basis of many WSN-based applications. However, WSNs are often deployed in the hostile environment, in which the attackers can eas-ily disrupt the localization procedure of the nodes. The effects of wormhole attack on the DV-Hop localization procedure are analyzed firstly, after which a secure localization scheme against the wormhole attack is proposed. The simulation re-sults illustrate that the proposed secure localization scheme can efficiently reduce the effects of the wormhole attack on the DV-Hop localization, which validates the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Recent advances in wireless networking technologies, along with ubiquitous sensing and computing, have brought significant convenience for location-based services. The localization issue in wireless sensor networks under the nonadversarial scenario has already been well studied. However, most existing localization schemes cannot provide satisfied performance under the adversarial scenario. In this paper, we propose three attack-resistant localization schemes, called basic TSCD, enhanced TSCD and mobility-aided TSCD secure localization schemes, respectively, to stand against the distance-consistent spoofing attack in wireless sensor networks. The idea behind the basic TSCD scheme is to adopt the temporal and spatial properties of locators to detect some attacked locators firstly and then utilize the consistent property of the detected attacked locators to identify other attacked locators. Enhanced TSCD and mobility-aided TSCD schemes are designed based on the basic TSCD scheme to improve the performance. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed schemes outperform other existing approaches under the same network parameters.

Abstract:Providing desirable data security, that is, confidentiality, authenticity, and availability, in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is challenging, as a WSN usually consists of a large number of resource constraint sensor nodes that are generally deployed in unattended/hostile environments and, hence, are exposed to many types of severe insider attacks due to node compromise. Existing security designs mostly provide a hop-by-hop security paradigm and thus are vulnerable to such attacks. Furthermore, existing security designs are also vulnerable to many types of denial of service (DoS) attacks, such as report disruption attacks and selective forwarding attacks and thus put data availability at stake. In this paper, we seek to overcome these vulnerabilities for large-scale static WSNs. We come up with a location-aware end-to-end security framework in which secret keys are bound to geographic locations and each node stores a few keys based on its own location. This location-aware property effectively limits the impact of compromised nodes only to their vicinity without affecting end-to-end data security. The proposed multifunctional key management framework assures both node-to-sink and node-to-node authentication along the report forwarding routes. Moreover, the proposed data delivery approach guarantees efficient en-route bogus data filtering and is highly robust against DoS attacks. The evaluation demonstrates that the proposed design is highly resilient against an increasing number of compromised nodes and effective in energy savings.
Toward Collinearity-Aware and Conflict-Friendly Localization for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Localization aims at determining node positions and is essential for many applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Most existing localization protocols adopt graph rigidity theory as the theoretical basis. The rigidity theory assumes that every three nodes are noncollinear in a two-dimensional graph; this assumption, however, may not always hold in WSNs. A lack of node collinearity verification places a limitation on localization accuracy. Furthermore, existing localization protocols explore only distance constraints for localization, giving rise to another limitation on localization percentage. Against these limitations, this paper presents two approaches toward collinearity-aware and conflict-friendly rigidity-based localization for WSNs. The proposed approaches are expected to increase both localization accuracy and percentage of traditional rigidity-based localization protocols. First, to achieve collinearity-awareness, we investigate node collinearity and propose a detection method to mitigate localization errors induced by probably collinear nodes. Second, to achieve conflict-friendliness, besides distance constraints, we explore distance conflicts to eliminate position ambiguities. Distance conflicts relax the sufficient condition of 3-connectivity for localizability to 2-connectivity; this relaxation can significantly improve localization percentage. For example, trilateration using distance conflicts yields a higher efficacy in both convex and non-convex WSNs and requires only a 25% lower average connectivity degree to locate 95% of sensors. The proposed approaches can be conveniently incorporated into existing localization protocols with small overhead. We validate their effectiveness of enhancing localization accuracy and percentage through both real and simulation experiments.
On the Node Localizability of Wireless Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks

Abstract:Location awareness is highly critical for wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks. Many efforts have been made to solve the problem of whether or not a network can be localized. Nevertheless, based on the data collected from a working sensor network, it is observed that a network is NOT always entirely localizable. Theoretical analyses also suggest that, in most cases, it is unlikely that all nodes in a network are localizable, although a (large) portion of the nodes can be uniquely located. Existing studies can merely examine whether or not a network is localizable as a whole; two fundamental questions remain unaddressed: First, given a network configuration, whether or not a specific node is localizable? Second, how many nodes in a network can be located and which are them? In this study, we analyze the limitation of previous works and propose a novel concept of node localizability. By deriving the necessary and sufficient conditions for node localizability, for the first time, it is possible to analyze how many nodes one can expect to locate in sparsely or moderately connected networks. To validate this design, we implement our solution on a real-world system and the experimental results show that node localizability provides useful guidelines for network deployment and other location-based services.

Abstract:Location discovery is one of the fundamental services in Internet of things built with wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this paper, we propose AnSuper , a novel range-free localization algorithm that provides accurate location estimates in anisotropic WSNs. In AnSuper, every anchor first selects a set of friendly anchors to which its distance estimates can be accurately obtained. These anchors are then broadcasted to neighboring common nodes, with which they can obtain accurate distance estimates to the anchors by using a novel locality-based algorithm and consequently calculate their positions. We discuss how to suppress error accumulation in the localization process. AnSuper can handle multiple anisotropy factors, including uneven nodal distribution and irregularity of the deployment region. Simulation results show that, compared with state-of-the-art solutions, AnSuper improves localization accuracy by more then 30 %.
Iterative Localization of Wireless Sensor Networks: an Accurate and Robust Approach.

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, an important research problem is to use a few anchor nodes with known locations to derive the locations of other nodes deployed in the sensor field. A category of solutions for this problem is the iterative localization, which sequentially merges the elements in a network to finally locate them. Here, a network element is different from its definition in iterative trilateration. It can be either an individual node or a group of nodes. For this approach, we identify a new problem called inflexible body merging, whose objective is to align two small network elements and generate a larger element. It is more generalized than the traditional tools of trilateration and patch stitching and can replace them as a new merging primitive. We solve this problem and make the following contributions. 1) Our primitive can tolerate ranging noise when merging two network elements. It adopts an optimization algorithm based on rigid body dynamics and relaxing springs. 2) Our primitive improves the robustness against flip ambiguities. It uses orthogonal regression to detect the rough collinearity of nodes in the presence of ranging noise, and then enumerate flip ambiguities accordingly. 3) We present a condition to indicate when we can apply this primitive to align two network elements. This condition can unify previous work and thus achieve a higher percentage of localizable nodes. All the declared contributions have been validated by both theoretical analysis and simulation results.
Robust localization against outliers in wireless sensor networks

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, a critical system service is the localization service that determines the locations of geographically distributed sensor nodes. The raw data used by this service are the distance measurements between neighboring nodes and the position knowledge of anchor nodes. However, these raw data may contain outliers that strongly deviate from their true values, which include both the outlier distances and the outlier anchors. These outliers can severely degrade the accuracy of the localization service. Therefore, we need a robust localization algorithm that can reject these outliers. Previous studies in this field mainly focus on enhancing multilateration with outlier rejection ability, since multilateration is a primitive operation used by localization service. But patch merging, a powerful operation for increasing the percentage of localizable nodes in sparse networks, is almost neglected. We thus propose a robust patch merging operation that can reject outliers for both multilateration and patch merging. Based on this operation, we further propose a robust network localization algorithm called RobustLoc. This algorithm makes two major contributions. (1) RobustLoc can achieve a high percentage of localizable nodes in both dense and sparse networks. In contrast, previous methods based on robust multilateration almost always fail in sparse networks with average degrees between 5 and 7. Our experiments show that RobustLoc can localize about 90&percnt; of nodes in a sparse network with 5.5 degrees. (2) As far as we know, RobustLoc is the first to uncover the differences between outlier distances and outlier anchors. Our simulations show that RobustLoc can reject colluding outlier anchors reliably in both convex and concave networks.
