Abstract:The open nature of wireless communication makes it easy for adversaries to either inject random signals to wireless channels harming the network availability, or eavesdrop on the communication breaching the location privacy. Those threats are challenging to cope with, because most of them cannot be addressed by traditional cryptographic methods. One of the attacks that can easily imperil the availability of networks is jamming attacks. An adversary can launch a jamming attack either by bypassing MAC-layer protocols and keeping sending packets, or by emitting radio signals to a particular channel. To cope with jamming attacks, in this dissertation, we focus on developing mechanisms to localize jammers. We examine how jammers affect networks in terms of signal strength, nodes' communication range, and network topologies, and present how to measure these jamming effects. To localize a jammer, we design an Adaptive Least-Squares-based (LSQ-based) algorithm which performs localization by exploiting the changes of communication range. Then, to further improve the localization accuracy, we propose an error minimizing framework that can localize not only one but also multiple jammers through utilizing the strength of jamming signals (JSS). To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed localization schemes, we conducted real-world experiments using a testbed of MicaZ, and then carried out extensive performance studies in large-scale networks by simulation. Another problem that cannot be solved by traditional cryptographic method is the location privacy issue. We study this issue in wireless sensor network because the locations of the sink nodes are critically important to the viability of wireless networks, and such information can be easily determined by attackers. For instance, attackers can eavesdrop on the network communication at several spots and trace back to the sink nodes. Then, they can destroy the sink nodes physically to disable the data collection or dissemination. In this dissertation, we examine the sink location privacy problem from both the attack and defense sides. On the attack side, we present two types of Zeroing-In attacks which allow attackers to identify the sink location by estimating the hop count or the arrival time of a broadcast packet at a few spots in the network. To cope with the Zeroing-In attacks, we propose a directed-walk-based scheme and validate that it is effective in deceiving adversaries at modest energy costs.

Abstract:Wormhole attacks can negatively affect the localization in wireless sensor networks. A typical wormhole attack can be launched by two colluding external attackers, one of which sniffs packets at one point in the network, tunnels them through a wired or wireless link to another point, and the other of which relays them within its vicinity. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the wormhole attack on the localization process and propose a novel consistency-based secure localization scheme against wormhole attacks, which includes wormhole attack detection, valid locators identification and self-localization. We also conduct the simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

Abstract:As one of the key technologies in wireless sensor networks (WSN), localization is the basis of many WSN-based applications. However, WSNs are often deployed in the hostile environment, in which the attackers can eas-ily disrupt the localization procedure of the nodes. The effects of wormhole attack on the DV-Hop localization procedure are analyzed firstly, after which a secure localization scheme against the wormhole attack is proposed. The simulation re-sults illustrate that the proposed secure localization scheme can efficiently reduce the effects of the wormhole attack on the DV-Hop localization, which validates the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Recent advances in wireless networking technologies, along with ubiquitous sensing and computing, have brought significant convenience for location-based services. The localization issue in wireless sensor networks under the nonadversarial scenario has already been well studied. However, most existing localization schemes cannot provide satisfied performance under the adversarial scenario. In this paper, we propose three attack-resistant localization schemes, called basic TSCD, enhanced TSCD and mobility-aided TSCD secure localization schemes, respectively, to stand against the distance-consistent spoofing attack in wireless sensor networks. The idea behind the basic TSCD scheme is to adopt the temporal and spatial properties of locators to detect some attacked locators firstly and then utilize the consistent property of the detected attacked locators to identify other attacked locators. Enhanced TSCD and mobility-aided TSCD schemes are designed based on the basic TSCD scheme to improve the performance. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed schemes outperform other existing approaches under the same network parameters.

Abstract:Accurately locating unknown nodes is a critical issue in the study of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Many localization approaches have been proposed based on anchor nodes, which are assumed to know their locations by manual placement or additional equipments such as global positioning system. However, none of these approaches can work properly under the adversarial scenario. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme called two-step secure localization (TSSL) stand against many typical malicious attacks, e.g. wormhole attack and location spoofing attack. TSSL detects malicious nodes step by step. First, anchor nodes collaborate with each other to identify suspicious nodes by checking their coordinates, identities and time of sending information. Then, by using a modified mesh generation scheme, malicious nodes are isolated and the WSN is divided into areas with different trust grades. Finally, a novel localization algorithm based on the arrival time difference of localization information is adopted to calculate locations of unknown nodes. Simulation results show that the TSSL detects malicious nodes effectively and the localization algorithm accomplishes localization with high localization accuracy.

Abstract:Wormhole attack is one of the most devastating threats for range-free localization in wireless sensor networks. To address this issue, we propose a robust localization scheme in wireless sensor networks against wormhole attack, called ConSetLoc, which neither complicated distance measuring devices nor extra complex encrypting algorithms is necessary. With the relationship between hop counts and geographic distance of sensor nodes in the deployment territory, we design a partition method of consistent anchors sets by the convex constraints in geometry which can reduce the effect of bad measurements on estimates, and then present a filtering strategy for the candidate locations with these anchors sets. In addition, we conduct simulation experiments for performance evaluation and the results demonstrate the proposed ConSetLoc can estimate the locations for most of sensor nodes with good accuracy and stability when wormhole attack exists in the network.

Abstract:Secure localization of unknown nodes in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is an important research subject. When WSNs are deployed in hostile environments, many attacks happen, e.g., wormhole, sinkhole and sybil attacks. Two issues about unknown nodes' secure localization need to be considered. First, the attackers may disguise as or attack the unknown and anchor nodes to interfere with localization process. Second, the attackers may forge, modify or replay localization information to make the estimated positions incorrect. Currently, researchers have proposed many techniques, e.g., SeRLoc, HiRLoc and ROPE, to solve the two issues. In this paper we describe the common attacks against localization, and survey research state of secure localization. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Abstract:Most of the state-of-the-art localization algorithms in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are vulnerable to various kinds of location attacks, whereas secure localization schemes proposed so far are too complex to apply to power constrainedWSNs. This paper provides a distributed robust localization algorithm called Bilateration that employs a unified way to deal with all kinds of location attacks as well as other kinds of information distortion caused by node malfunction or abnormal environmental noise. Bilateration directly calculates two candidate positions for every two heard anchors, and then uses the average of a maximum set of close-by candidate positions as the location estimation. The basic idea behind Bilateration is that candidate positions calculated from reasonable (i.e., error bounded) anchor positions and distance measurements tend to be close to each other, whereas candidate positions calculated from false anchor positions or distance measurements are highly unlikely to be close to each other if false information are not collaborated. By using ilateration instead of classical multilateration to compute location estimation, Bilateration requires much lower computational complexity, yet still retains the same localization accuracy. This paper also evaluates and compares Bilateration with three multilateration-based localization algorithms, and the simulation results show that Bilateration achieves the best comprehensive performance and is more suitable to real wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Wormhole attack is a severe attack that can be easily mounted on a wide range of wireless networks without compromising any cryptographic entity or network node. In the wormhole attack, an attacker sniffs packets at one point in the network and tunnels them through the wormhole link to another point. Such kind of attack can deteriorate the localization procedure in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we first analyze the impacts of the wormhole attack on the localization procedure. Then, we propose a secure localization scheme against the wormhole attacks called SLAW including three phases: wormhole attack detection, neighboring locators differentiation, and secure localization. The main idea of the SLAW is to build a so-called conflicting set for each locator based on the abnormalities during the message exchanges, which can be used to differentiate the dubious locators to achieve secure localization. We first consider the simplified system model in which there is no packet loss and all the nodes have the same transmission range. We further consider the general system model where the packet loss exists and different types of nodes have different transmission radii. We conduct the simulations to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed secure localization scheme and compare it with the existing schemes under different network parameters. Abstract:The locations of sensor nodes are very important to many wireless sensor networks (WSNs). When WSNs are deployed in hostile environments, two issues about sensors’ locations need to be considered. First, attackers may attack the localization process to make estimated locations incorrect. Second, since sensor nodes may be compromised, the base station (BS) may not trust the locations reported by sensor nodes. Researchers have proposed two techniques, secure localization and location verification, to solve these two issues, respectively. In this paper, we present a survey of current work on both secure localization and location verification. We first describe the attacks against localization and location verification, and then we classify and describe existing solutions. We also implement typical secure localization algorithms of one popular category and study their performance by simulations.

Robust localization against outliers in wireless sensor networks

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, a critical system service is the localization service that determines the locations of geographically distributed sensor nodes. The raw data used by this service are the distance measurements between neighboring nodes and the position knowledge of anchor nodes. However, these raw data may contain outliers that strongly deviate from their true values, which include both the outlier distances and the outlier anchors. These outliers can severely degrade the accuracy of the localization service. Therefore, we need a robust localization algorithm that can reject these outliers. Previous studies in this field mainly focus on enhancing multilateration with outlier rejection ability, since multilateration is a primitive operation used by localization service. But patch merging, a powerful operation for increasing the percentage of localizable nodes in sparse networks, is almost neglected. We thus propose a robust patch merging operation that can reject outliers for both multilateration and patch merging. Based on this operation, we further propose a robust network localization algorithm called RobustLoc. This algorithm makes two major contributions. (1) RobustLoc can achieve a high percentage of localizable nodes in both dense and sparse networks. In contrast, previous methods based on robust multilateration almost always fail in sparse networks with average degrees between 5 and 7. Our experiments show that RobustLoc can localize about 90&percnt; of nodes in a sparse network with 5.5 degrees. (2) As far as we know, RobustLoc is the first to uncover the differences between outlier distances and outlier anchors. Our simulations show that RobustLoc can reject colluding outlier anchors reliably in both convex and concave networks.

Abstract:Many sensor applications are being developed that require the location of wireless devices, and localization schemes have been developed to meet this need. However, as location-based services become more prevalent, the localization infrastructure will become the target of malicious attacks. These attacks will not be conventional security threats, but rather threats that adversely affect the ability of localization schemes to provide trustworthy location information. This paper identifies a list of attacks that are unique to localization algorithms. Since these attacks are diverse in nature, and there may be many unforeseen attacks that can bypass traditional security countermeasures, it is desirable to alter the underlying localization algorithms to be robust to intentionally corrupted measurements. In this paper, we develop robust statistical methods to make localization attack-tolerant. We examine two broad classes of localization: triangulation and RF-based fingerprinting methods. For triangulation-based localization, we propose an adaptive least squares and least median squares position estimator that has the computational advantages of least squares in the absence of attacks and is capable of switching to a robust mode when being attacked. We introduce robustness to fingerprinting localization through the use of a median-based distance metric. Finally, we evaluate our robust localization schemes under different threat conditions.

Abstract:Localization is a fundamental problem in wireless sensor networks. Currently, most localization protocols assume a benign environment. This paper studies how a localization protocol can be affected by attacks, especially those like wormhole attacks that don't need to capture the keys used in the network, and how such an attack can be detected and defended in distributed scheme. By applying several localization algorithms, this paper first shows that wormhole attacks are a serious threat to all these algorithms, based on simulation in NS-2. The paper first evaluates the effects of wormhole attacks on several Range-Free Anchor-Free (RFAF) localization algorithms based on hop-counting and connectivity techniques. Then, the paper presents an RFAF localization algorithm called Wormhole-resilient Geographic Distributed Localization (WGDL), which embeds a wormhole detecting/recovering mechanism: if this mechanism detects wormhole attacks in location computation, then it will restore the localization by freezing the wormhole affected area. Simulations show that the proposed detection method is effective on different network placements, and that the mechanism has both a low False Toleration Rate (FTR) and a low False Detection Rate (FDR) in detecting wormhole attacks.

Abstract:Abstract Localization is a crucial problem for robot control in the wireless sensors network with malicious nodes. In this paper, an attack-resistant localization algorithm with adaptive weight is proposed to achieve an accurate localization without any prior information of malicious anchors. The core idea of the proposed algorithm is adjusting the weights of malicious anchors based on the estimation for the attack value of malicious anchors to eliminate the influence of malicious anchors. Meanwhile, the subfunction's gradient is used to avoid the local minimum of non-convex function based on the particularity of the positioning problem. Three kinds of simulations are conducted to illustrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve an accurate localization in different types of attacks. Furthermore, two comparisons with other two localization methods are presented to show the advantage of the proposed algorithm by simulations and experiments.

Abstract:Localization technology is crucial in wireless sensor networks (WSN) by forming the basis of various WSN applications. With the advancements of WSN, WSN attacks for node localization have increasingly become an important security issue. The Sybil attack is an example of such attacks where a reputation system is subverted by creating multiple pseudonymous identities. In this paper, a detection and defense algorithm against Sybil attacks based on the distance vector-hop (DV-Hop) method is presented. Experimental results show that the algorithm can effectively improve the security of the node localization in WSN. When the number of beacon nodes is 50, our proposed algorithm reduces the average localization error by 3% than the traditional DV-Hop.

Abstract:Most of the state-of-the-art localization algorithms in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are vulnerable to attacks from malicious or compromised network nodes, whereas the secure localization schemes proposed so far are too complex to be applied to power constrained WSNs. This paper provides a novel secure scheme "Bilateration" which is derived from multilateration but can be calculated more accurately and quickly to resolve the positions of unknown nodes without explicitly distinguishing what kind of location attacks the WSN is facing. This paper also compares Bilateration with three existing multilateration solutions that optimize the location estimation accuracy via LS, LMS and LLMS respectively in a simulated threat environment. The experiment results show that Bilateration gets the best tradeoff among estimation error, filtering ability and computational complexity.
