Abstract:With the emergence of mobile Internet and social media, human relationship has evolved into a new form due to the much broader reach and more efficient communications enabled by information technology. This paper examines the communication pattern and impact on social group in the context of a Chinese popular mobile social media app. It analyzes a dataset that comprised of the information about sending and receiving messages by 10,000 users over one month period. It found a strong temporal pattern of a significant difference between Monday and other days: the least frequent usages on Monday among the week. The average number of friends a user has messaging contacts with is about 2, far less than the number of friends a user has in total, which can reflect the attributes of users maintaining their social network and friendship.

Abstract:The present study explored the influence of the computer as a media on the relationship among users in the experimental setting.By examining the subjects' self-reports and analyzing the discussion-content,we searched for the possible reasons for the contradiction of theories in this field.With the extent of anonymity growing,we found more social attraction for the partner, more task-oriented language and less relation-oriented language they used.

Abstract:This paper presents a comparison study to identify the communication patterns of people through different social connections. Advances in technology have brought many communication channels for people in daily life, like E-mail, blogs/micro-blog and mobile telecommunication etc. Now and in the future it is going to be critical that people use multiple channels of communication to reach others. The understanding of people’s choice of communication channels is becoming quite important. In this paper, we specifically selected two of the most significant channels as the objects for comparison. One is online social network, e.g., Twitter as representative of such networks, and another is mobile telecommunication. The corresponding social network is therefore constructed for each communication channel. Based on that, we conduct a series of investigation, including temporal analysis, geographical analysis and topological analysis. Generally, what we have found in this study is that people’s communication through different channels shows the differences in various aspects.

Abstract:This study charts culturally shaped mobile communication in Chinese society. It finds that Chinese mobile users maintain an open network of contacts comprising not only private relations but work relations and peripheral social ties. Mobile phones are used to define and negotiate in-group membership, maintain social cohesion through mediated rituals, observe relational hierarchies, and preserve social harmony through the use of mobile etiquette defined along spatial, temporal and contextual dimensions. To the extent that mobile phones play into the particularistic, indirect and high-context patterns of Chinese social interaction and relation-oriented cultural norms, the Western mode of “perpetual contact” amongst private relations gives way to a contextualized mobility of diffuse personal ties.

Abstract:In this work, we unveil the evolution of social relationships across the lifespan. This evolution reflects the dynamic social strategies that people use to fulfill their social needs. For this work we utilize a large mobile network complete with user demographic information. We find that while younger individuals are active in broadening their social relationships, seniors tend to keep small but closed social circles. We further demonstrate that opposite-gender interactions between two young individuals are much more frequent than those between young same-gender people, while the situation is reversed after around 35 years old. We also discover that while same-gender triadic social relationships are persistently maintained over a lifetime, the opposite-gender triadic circles are unstable upon entering into middle-age. Finally we demonstrate a greater than 80% potential predictability for inferring users' gender and a 73% predictability for age from mobile communication behaviors.

Physica A Statistical Mechanics and its Applications

Abstract:Human communication patterns can be discovered or examined by analyzing mobile phone data. However, previous studies have mainly concentrated on analyzing one type of data, such as calling or Short Messaging Service (SMS). This limited approach hinders our comprehensive understanding of human communication behaviors as a whole. In this paper, we combine large-scale data and entropy evaluation methods to examine the patterns of multichannel mobile communications from various perspectives. First, we showcase users' preferences across various channels and reveal that there is a U-shaped interactive relationship between calling and SMS in dual-channel communication as the number of contacts increases. Second, we identify an upper limit for communication vitality in multichannel communications, with the corresponding number of contacts being 10, 100, and 20 in calling, SMS, and hybrid channel. Furthermore, the patterns of strength allocation and communication vitality for both SMS and calling by users are very comparable. Third, compared to calling, users tend to send text messages more regularly and at shorter intervals. And they usually have a shorter delay between texting and calling than from calling to texting. Finally, we propose a method to quantify the complexity of multichannel behavior sequences based on multiscale entropy and two null models. These findings can facilitate a deeper understanding of human communication behaviors, while our novel method offers a universal framework for quantifying the complexity of multichannel behaviors.

Abstract:The current study takes a qualitative approach to examining the unique use of mobile communications in romantic relationships among young Chinese adults, a research field few scholars have evinced interest in at this point in time (Lim & Soriano, 2016: p. 4).The overarching question "What is the 'Chinese-ness' of the mobile phone user culture of young romantic couples regarding perpetual contact, boundary maintenance, and the connectedness-autonomy tension?" was answered by 15 semi-structured individual interviews.The findings suggest that 1) WeChat messaging was the most prominent mobile media platform used by the respondents to stay in "perpetual contact", i.e., defined as a continuous conversation through frequent short messages between individuals not physically in the same location (Katz & Aakhus, 2002: p. 2).The interviewees wished to protect their relationship a couple by not disclosing too much or by preventing others from prying too far into it.3) Respondents resolved the tension between the needs to connect with each other and to remain independent individuals by adopting the former approach.Respondents frequently practiced perpetual contact, supporting the Apparatgeist theory, which views mobile phones as mystical devices that allow constant communication with unseen others, combined with the collective construction of meaning (Katz & Aakhus, 2002).This current study further discusses relevant theoretical and social implications.

Abstract:This chapter examines the use of mobile messaging apps in relationship management. To contextualize the discussion, the authors focus on WeChat, a dominant mobile messaging service in China that has over 1 billion monthly active users, as a case to examine the mutual shaping between technological affordances and social contexts. This chapter first introduces the case of WeChat and discusses its main affordances related to mobile messaging. The chapter then presents a discussion of the use of WeChat messaging in relationship management and users’ sociocultural construction of technology. This chapter aims to present a mutual shaping process between the affordances of mobile messaging apps and users’ relational practices.

Abstract:For many emerging adults, initiating and developing a romantic relationship is likely to be very different from the experiences of previous generations. Many studies address the abundant use of technology among young adults in virtually every aspect of their lives. Few studies, however, have investigated the use of communication technology and its impact on how relationships are discovered, initiated, and maintained among this group. Researchers collected data from 1,003 young adults (ages 18–25 years) through an online survey about communication technology use and dating behaviors. Results were analyzed using chi-square tests to assess for differences between groups. Findings suggest significant differences between men and women and their use of communication technology during the initiation of dating relationships. Additionally, young adults believe that “talking,” “hanging out,” and “sharing intimate details” are more important when compared with using communication technologies to establish a relationship. The information yields valuable understanding about the role communication technology plays in the intimate relationship development of emerging adults.

Abstract:The information release behavior of WeChat users is influenced by many factors, and studying the rules of the behavior of users in WeChat can provide theoretical help for the dynamic research of mobile social network users. By crawling WeChat moments information of nine users within 5 years, we used the human behavioral dynamics system to analyze users' behavior. The results show that the information distribution behavior of WeChat users is consistent with the power-law distribution for a certain period of time. Meanwhile, there is an anti-memory characteristic in information release behavior of WeChat users, which is significantly different from other user behavior patterns in online social networks. The results of the study provide theoretical support for the further study of information release behavior of Wechat users.

Abstract:Communication technologies are widely used to manage interpersonal relationships, but little is known about which media are most useful at different stages of relationship development, and how the pattern of usage may be influenced by contextual factors or users’ gender. Drawing on theories of relationship development, this study examined usage patterns among 34 college students participating in six geographically stratified focus group interviews. Analyses revealed a sequence of media use tied to stages of relationship development − from Facebook in early stages to instant messaging and then cell phones as a relationship progressed. Judgments about the efficacy and appropriateness of using a medium were based on how well its salient features matched prominent goals or addressed major concerns of a relationship at the given stage. International students added two technologies to the sequence to accommodate time differentials and distance from communication partners. Males were less explicit about the sequence, except when referring to cross-sex relationships.

Abstract:Taking Nanjing as a case, the paper explains the spatial behavior differences existing in the information technology use among different groups of residents and households, by virtue of analyzing the survey data of urban households in the 11 districts of Nanjing, from the social, spatial, life and other non-technical angles. Also it makes various analyses and evaluation quantitatively and qualitatively on the social and spatial effect of information technology. The results show that the new technology is changing the social spatial behaviors of urban residents. New behavioral spaces of urban family such as telecommuting, email and QQ have begun to emerge. With the help of Internet, the communication scope of families has expanded greatly, and more new forms of publicizing community information have begun to emerge. Telecommunication contact forms have been developing swiftly, and their frequencies of contact have been increasing dramatically.

Abstract:In the context of the mobile Internet, continuously upgraded media and increasing numbers of terminal devices has enabled information communication to become instant and abundant. The lifestyle of the public has also changed with the evolution of the Internet. The public’s growing enthusiasm for watching short videos on smart phones are one example. This paper discusses changes in the communication environment, namely the concept and development of mobile short videos. Application of Lasswell’s “5W” model to mobile short video communication, is used to analyze this form of communication, using Meipai, a Chinese mobile short video application, as a case study. Suggestions for potential development in this area are also considered.
