Abstract:The present study explored the influence of the computer as a media on the relationship among users in the experimental setting.By examining the subjects' self-reports and analyzing the discussion-content,we searched for the possible reasons for the contradiction of theories in this field.With the extent of anonymity growing,we found more social attraction for the partner, more task-oriented language and less relation-oriented language they used.
Does the Internet Bring People Closer Together or Further Apart? The Impact of Internet Usage on Interpersonal Communications

Abstract:The complementarity interference (CI) model suggests that the Internet may either inhibit or facilitate interpersonal communications. This paper empirically examines the impact of Internet usage on interpersonal interactions, using a micro dataset from China to answer whether the Internet brings people closer together or further apart. The empirical results demonstrate, first, that Internet usage significantly increases both the time and frequency of people’s communications with their family and friends, rather than causing them to feel more disconnected and isolated. Holding other factors constant, for each one-standard-deviation increase in Internet usage, weekly communications with family members increases by an average of 102.150 min, while there is an average increase of 54.838 min in interactions with friends. These findings as to its positive effects are robust when using other regression models and interpersonal contact measures, as well as the instrumental variable method. Second, Internet usage also contributes to decreased loneliness; it exerts this effect primarily by improving people’s interactions with their family members. However, communications with friends do not significantly mediate such impacts. Third, the positive role of Internet usage on communications is more prominent for people with more frequent online socialization and self-presentation, better online skills, younger age, higher educational level, and who are living in urban areas. In addition, the beneficial effects of Internet usage are larger for communications with family members in the case of migrants. Therefore, in the context of the rapid development of information technology, the network infrastructure should be improved to make better use of the Internet to facilitate interpersonal communications and promote people’s wellness.

Abstract:The Internet is the latest in a series of technological breakthroughs in interpersonal communication, following the telegraph, telephone, radio, and television. It combines innovative features of its predecessors, such as bridging great distances and reaching a mass audience. However, the Internet has novel features as well, most critically the relative anonymity afforded to users and the provision of group venues in which to meet others with similar interests and values. We place the Internet in its historical context, and then examine the effects of Internet use on the user's psychological well-being, the formation and maintenance of personal relationships, group memberships and social identity, the workplace, and community involvement. The evidence suggests that while these effects are largely dependent on the particular goals that users bring to the interaction—such as self-expression, affiliation, or competition—they also interact in important ways with the unique qualities of the Internet communication situation.

Abstract:Current research suggests that the Internet has become a popular medium for forming interpersonal relationships. Not only are many people developing cyberfriendships, but some move beyond virtual communication and interact more directly through telephone contact and face-to-face encounters. This pilot study examined the personality characteristics of 30 participants (17 men and 13 women) who were regular Internet users and who had used the Internet to meet people mainly through chat rooms. The findings of this study suggest that people who use the Internet meet others tend to be truthful in general in their interactions although both men and women often did not reveal their true names. Eighty percent of the subjects formed casual or friendly relationships, whereas 6% formed intimate or romantic relationships. Approximately one-third of the subjects made some form of offline contact, with 40% talking on the telephone and 33.3% meeting face-to-face. Furthermore, examination of personality styles indicated that cyberfriends tend to be socially skilled, have strong verbal skills, and demonstrate empathy for others. Most subjects were careful about protecting their anonymity, and none of the subjects who met face-to-face did so without first talking on the phone. This suggests that individuals who make friends via the Internet tend to take appropriate precautions and find this medium an effective and safe way to interact with others and to expand one's social system.

Abstract:Social Media sites have become increasingly popular platforms for developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Although the usage of computer-mediated communication is normal in day-to-day life, the understanding behind how and why these relationships grow is scarce. This literature review considers relational elements such as self-disclosure and reciprocity, and how they are impacted by online elements such as an asynchronous context, controllability, and the disinhibition effect. Contrary to interpersonal relationships that develop in a physical context, the law of reciprocity is fulfilled and replaced by affirmation and recognition from relational partners, while self-disclosure continues to be a vital element within relationships. Developing an online relationship isn’t difficult, but the factors involved are varied and worth exploring in further study.

Abstract:The Internet is a new medium for disseminating information. The emergence of online information dissemination tools has overcome the limitations of time and space in the early information dissemination tools, and online information dissemination has extraordinary attractiveness in all walks of life. Online communication is the dissemination of information, including news, knowledge, and other information, through computer networks. The benefits of high speed, high volume, interactivity, immediacy, vividness, openness, ease of discovery, and online communication over time, across different fields and media, enable people to appreciate online media in a new way. The Internet is rapidly becoming the new preferred means of communication due to its unparalleled advantages. The research on cross-cultural communication on the Internet is based on the globalization of economy, the globalization of information dissemination, and the development of cultural marketing. This paper has conducted a research experiment on the new path of stranger interaction platform and network cross-cultural communication in the all-media era. The experimental data show that the paths of cultural dissemination account for 39% of introductions by others and 26% of social platforms such as WeChat. Promotional information on other platforms accounted for 17%, app stores accounted for 12%, and others accounted for 6%. It can be seen that the introduction and recommendation of others are the main way of cross-cultural communication. After studying the interactive platform for strangers in the all-media era, we learned from the Internet that cross-cultural communication has gradually become the main way.

Abstract:This paper presents a comparison study to identify the communication patterns of people through different social connections. Advances in technology have brought many communication channels for people in daily life, like E-mail, blogs/micro-blog and mobile telecommunication etc. Now and in the future it is going to be critical that people use multiple channels of communication to reach others. The understanding of people’s choice of communication channels is becoming quite important. In this paper, we specifically selected two of the most significant channels as the objects for comparison. One is online social network, e.g., Twitter as representative of such networks, and another is mobile telecommunication. The corresponding social network is therefore constructed for each communication channel. Based on that, we conduct a series of investigation, including temporal analysis, geographical analysis and topological analysis. Generally, what we have found in this study is that people’s communication through different channels shows the differences in various aspects.

Abstract:Researchers have various opinions on the relationship between real social networks and online social networks.This controversy has affected the fields related to on-line learning.From the case study of Xiangshan primary school located in Yiwu,the paper transforms the data collected by questionaire about on-line networks,off-line networks and affection network into three social network matrices.At the same time,by means of Ucient 6.1 software,from angles of sex,examination scores,small social groups,the interaction among students,the communication between boy stduents and girl students,the paper attempts to make a deep analysis about the differences between students' online communication and their face-to-face communication.In the development of online course,these differences should be fully taken into consideration.

Abstract:As technology and big data algorithms advance, more social media emerge and grow popular, attracting many individuals. Almost everyone relies on social media platforms like Weibo, WeChat, TikTok, and others for communication and socializing, but young people rarely realize how much their communication habits have changed. In our daily lives, communication is vital, and the means of communication are constantly linked to results, therefore they should be given more attention. Some difficulties caused by this new communication have been found. Thus, fixing them appears crucial. This study aims To investigate the improvement of communicative behavior using social media. By exploring how social media change the way of communication from different angles, this research aims to provide valuable insights for educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers seeking to distinguish the advantage and disadvantage brought by social media among people and raise some possible solutions to make full use of this type of platform. The result showed the effective communication, social interaction, and conflict management are the main aspects of communication behavior improvement using social media. This research contributes to both industry and academia by updating theoretical knowledge of the how the use of social media can improve the communication effectiveness to All Walks of Life in social science studies.

Abstract:The paper attempts to analyze the current researches of social relations on computer-mediated communication(CMC) from three aspects.Firstly,some people concern that whether or not CMC can generate persistent interpersonal relations generally.Secondly,are the relations "moving away" or "extending" day life social relations.Finally,the thesis summarizes some researches on the quality of these relations.CMC can give rise to highly trust,reciprocity and broadly supportive social relations.But these relationships do not necessarily "move away" or "extend" day life relations.While CMC tend to bring weak ties,it do not prevent from generating strong ties.Further researches can pay attention to dynamic evolution of social relation on CMC,nature and structure of these social networks,and their impacts on production and reproduction of social capital,etc.

Abstract:Using the questionnaire on teenagers from Zhejiang,Hunan and Gansu,the paper makes a quantitative analysis of the juvenile net communication structure.It is concluded that cyberspace has become a new arena for daily communication among juvenile net users.Net communication not only helps juvenile net users maintain their existing social relations but also extends their social relation network.The basic principle sustaining the net interaction among juvenile net users is chiefly the pleasure they obtained from the interaction itself and internet has changed to a considerable degree their communication behavior.For many of juvenile net users,cyberspace is not only a medium for interaction but also a medium for self-expression which is made more open,diversified and flexible.The social communication in cyberspace among teenagers concentrates on personal interest,perception and emotion conveyance to be shared among strangers.
