Abstract:In this study, we consider a permutation flow shop scheduling problem on a three-machine with deteriorating jobs (a deteriorating job means that the job's processing time is an increasing function of its starting time) so as to minimize the makespan. We model job deterioration as a function that is proportional to a linear function of time. For some special cases, we prove that the problem can be solved in polynomial time. We develop branch-and-bound and heuristic procedures for the general case. Computational experiments for the branch-and-bound algorithm and heuristic algorithm are presented.

Abstract:AbstractWe deal with the problem of minimizing makespan on a single batch processing machine. In this problem, each job has both processing time and size (capacity requirement). The batch processing machine can process a number of jobs simultaneously as long as the total size of these jobs being processed does not exceed the machine capacity. The processing time of a batch is just the processing time of the longest job in the batch. An approximation algorithm with worst‐case ratio 3/2 is given for the version where the processing times of large jobs (with sizes greater than 1/2) are not less than those of small jobs (with sizes not greater than 1/2). This result is the best possible unless P = NP. For the general case, we propose an approximation algorithm with worst‐case ratio 7/4. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the single-machine makespan minimization scheduling problem with nonlinear shortening processing times. By the nonlinear shortening processing times, we mean that the processing times of jobs are non-increasing nonlinear functions of their starting times. The computational complexity of the general problem remains an open problem, but we show that even with the introduction of nonlinear shortening processing times to job processing times, some special cases remain polynomially solvable. We also show that an optimal schedule of the general makespan minimization problem is V-shaped with respect to job normal processing times. A heuristic algorithm which utilize the V-shaped property is proposed, and computational experiments show that it is effective and efficient in obtaining near-optimal solutions.

Abstract:This paper considers the scheduling problems under decreasing linear deterioration. Deterioration of a job means that its processing time is a function of its execution start time. Optimal algorithms are presented respectively for single machine scheduling of minimizing the makespan, maximum lateness, maximum cost and number of late jobs. For two-machine flow shop scheduling problem to minimize the makespan, it is proved that the optimal schedule can be obtained by Johnson's rule. If the processing times of operations are equal for each job, flow shop scheduling problems can be transformed into single machine scheduling problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider single-machine scheduling problem in which processing time of a job is described by a convex decreasing resource consumption function. The objective is to minimize the total amount of resource consumed subject to a constraint on total weighted flow time. The optimal resource allocation is obtained for any arbitrary job sequence. The computational complexity of the general problem remains an open question, but we present and analyze some special cases that are solvable by using polynomial time algorithms. For the general problem, several dominance properties and some lower bounds are derived, which are used to speed up the elimination process of a branch-and-bound algorithm proposed to solve the problem. A heuristic algorithm is also proposed, which is shown by computational experiments to perform effectively and efficiently in obtaining near-optimal solutions. The results show that the average percentage error of the proposed heuristic algorithm from optimal solutions is less than 3%.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to some flow shop scheduling problems, where job processing times are defined by functions dependent on their positions in the schedule. An example is constructed to show that the classical Johnson's rule is not the optimal solution for two different models of the two-machine flow shop scheduling to minimize makespan. In order to solve the makespan minimization problem in the two-machine flow shop scheduling, we suggest Johnson's rule as a heuristic algorithm, for which the worst-case bound is calculated. We find polynomial time solutions to some special cases of the considered problems for the following optimization criteria: the weighted sum of completion times and maximum lateness. Some furthermore extensions of the problems are also shown.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the m -machine ( ) permutation flow shop scheduling in which the processing time of a job depends not only on the sum of actual processing times of previous jobs but also on its job-dependent truncation parameter, i.e., the general truncated learning effects. The goal is to find a sequence so as to minimize the makespan, we prove that this problem is NP-hard. Two simple heuristics are proposed and their worst-case bounds are presented. We also propose a branch-and-bound algorithm and some heuristics to solve this problem. Further, computational experiments are conducted to determine the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:We consider single-machine scheduling problem in which the processing time of a job is a function of its position in a sequence, its starting time, and its resource allocation. The objective is to find the optimal sequence of jobs and the optimal resource allocation separately. We concentrate on two goals separately, namely, minimizing a cost function containing makespan, total completion time, total absolute differences in completion times, and total resource cost; minimizing a cost function containing makespan, total waiting time, total absolute differences in waiting times, and total resource cost. The problem is modeled as an assignment problem, and thus can be solved in polynomial time. Some extensions of the problem are also shown.

Abstract:This paper studies a two-machine cross-docking flow shop scheduling problem in which a job at the second machine can be processed only after the processing of some jobs at the first machine has been completed. The objective is to minimize the makespan. We first show that the problem is strongly NP-hard. Some polynomially solvable special cases are provided. We then develop a polynomial approximation algorithm with an error-bound analysis. A branch-and-bound algorithm is also constructed. Computational results show that the branch-and-bound algorithm can optimally solve problems with up to 60 jobs within a reasonable amount of time.

Abstract:In this article we consider a single-machine scheduling problem with decreasing time-dependent jobprocessing times. Decreasing time-dependent job-processing times means that its processing time is a non-increasing function of its execution start time. The objective is to find a schedule that minimizes total absolute differences in waiting times. We show that the optimal schedule is V-shaped: jobs are arranged in the descending order of their normal processing times if they are placed before the job with the smallest normal processing time, but in the ascending order of their normal processing times if placed after it. We prove several other properties of an optimal schedule, and introduce two heuristic algorithms that are tested against a lower bound. We also provide computational results to evaluate the performance of the heuristic algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper we consider flow shop scheduling problems with a time-dependent learning effect. The time-dependent learning effect of a job on a machine is assumed to be a function of the total normal processing time of the jobs scheduled in front of the job on the machine. The objective is to minimize one of the five regular performance criteria namely, the total completion time, the makespan, the total weighted completion time, the total weighted discounted completion time, and the sum of the quadratic job completion times. We present heuristic algorithms by using the optimal permutations for the special cases of the corresponding single machine scheduling problems. We also analyze the worst-case bound of the proposed heuristic algorithms.
