Abstract:Utilizing a unique dataset of the Chinese Academy of Sciences academicians (1993–2013), this paper investigates the Matthew effect in China’s science. Three indicators, namely the concentration index, the Matthew index and the coefficient of variation, are adopted to measure the uneven distribution of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences among different regions and disciplines. The empirical analysis demonstrates the existence of the Matthew effect in China’s science for the above two dimensions. Yet, this effect has weakened for all regions with the exception of Beijing. We argue that this uneven distribution of the nation’s brightest minds makes scientifically competitive regions and disciplines even more competitive while putting those less developed regions and research domains at further disadvantage.

Abstract:To investigate either artificial or natural selection leads to the Matthew effect in the science funding allocation and its consequences, this study retrieves 274,732 publications by Chinese scientists from the Web of Science and examines how the disparity of science funding determines scientists' research performance. We employ the Negative Binomial Model and other models to regress the publication's citation times, which measures the research performance, on the number of funding grants and their amounts of currency that the publication receives, which measures the disparity of science funding. The empirical results suggest an inverted U-shaped relationship. However, the optimum number of funding grants far exceeds the actual number that most publications receive, implying that increasing the funding for academic research positively impacts scientists' research performance. The natural disparity thus plays a major role in distributing the science funding. Additionally, China's publication-based academic assessment system may be another main cause.

Abstract:The National Natural Science Foundation is an important part of Chinese scientific research fund system,the allocation of funds has been the concern.The trend of "Gini coefficient" which reflects the gap between rich and poor economic indicators,2001-2015 years of National Natural Science Fund Allocation in the "Matthew effect" has carried on the empirical analysis.The results show that the higher the amount of funding for the project,the Gini coefficient is,in the allocation of funds in the process embodied by the "Matthew effect" is obvious.The National Natural Science Foundation of the "key",the "outstanding" project and the "face","Youth" project has more obvious advantage accumulation phenomenon,but the "Gini the coefficient of youth" project since 2009 show a decreasing trend,the allocation of funds is more reasonable.Finally,based on the above results,the National Natural Science Fund Allocation in the "Matthew effect" Rational analysis and reasonable allocation of funds put forward related suggestions.

Abstract:The Matthew effect describes the phenomenon that in societies, the rich tend to get richer and the potent even more powerful. It is closely related to the concept of preferential attachment in network science, where the more connected nodes are destined to acquire many more links in the future than the auxiliary nodes. Cumulative advantage and success-breads-success also both describe the fact that advantage tends to beget further advantage. The concept is behind the many power laws and scaling behaviour in empirical data, and it is at the heart of self-organization across social and natural sciences. Here, we review the methodology for measuring preferential attachment in empirical data, as well as the observations of the Matthew effect in patterns of scientific collaboration, socio-technical and biological networks, the propagation of citations, the emergence of scientific progress and impact, career longevity, the evolution of common English words and phrases, as well as in education and brain development. We also discuss whether the Matthew effect is due to chance or optimization, for example related to homophily in social systems or efficacy in technological systems, and we outline possible directions for future research.

Abstract:Scientific research activity produces the “Matthew Effect” on resource allocation. Based on a data set in the life sciences field from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) during the 11th Five-Year-Plan (2006–2010), this paper makes an empirical study on how the Matthew Effect of funding allocation at the institutional level and city level impact scientific research activity output. With Gini coefficient evaluation, descriptive statistic analysis, and the Poisson regression model, we found that there has been a rapid increase in the concentration degree of funding allocation among institutions and cities. Within a period of 5 years, the Gini coefficients of total funding of institutions and cities as the units of measurement have increased from 0.61 and 0.74 to 0.67 and 0.79 respectively. However, this concentration in funding allocation did not result in significant additional benefits. Institutions awarded with more funding did not produce the expected positive spillover effect on their scientific research activity output. Instead, an “inverted U-shape” pattern of decreasing returns to scale was discovered, under which there was a negative effect on internal scientific research activity in the majority of institutions with concentrated funding allocation. Meanwhile, the result shows that Young Scholars projects under the NFSC produced high-level output. We conclude the study by discussing the possible reasons of the inverted U-shape pattern and its policy implications.

Independent research of China in Science Citation Index Expanded during 1980–2011

Abstract:The study explores the characteristics of China's independent research articles published from 1980 to 2011, based on the database of Science Citation Index Expanded. The publication outputs of seven major industrialized countries including Canada, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA were compared with China. Annual production, field performance, research emphases and trends, top articles, as well as main institutional and individual contributors by its top cited articles were analyzed. Some newly developed indicators related to words in title, author keywords, KeyWords Plus, first author, corresponding author, and Y-index were employed to provide in-depth information on topic and author contributions. Results showed that China has been closing the gap with the USA with the greatest growth, and has stood the second since 2006. Most top cited articles were published in 2000s, made up approximately seven tenths of total articles. Pronounced activities were found in chemistry and physics related categories. The core categories included multidisciplinary chemistry, physical chemistry, multidisciplinary materials science, and applied physics. Moreover, China's performance of nanotechnology and science, especially carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanostructures showed dramatic growth. Six top articles with at least 1000 citations were examined, and were observed to concern medicine, nanotube, and adsorption. In addition, main contributing institutions and authors were also revealed and evaluated. Chinese Academy of Sciences played a dominant role, and Tsinghua University, Peking University and five universities in Hong Kong showed good scientific performance.

Abstract:To provide an overview of the characteristics of research in China, a bibliometric evaluation of highly cited papers with high-level representation was conducted during the period from 1999 to 2009 based on the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database. A comprehensive assessment covered overall performance, journals, subject categories, internationally collaborative countries, national inter-institutionally collaborative institutions, and most-cited papers in 22 scientific fields. China saw a strong growth in scientific publications in the last decade, to some extent due to increasing research and development expenditure. China has been more active in ESI fields of chemistry and physics, but more excellent in materials science, engineering and mathematics. Most publications were concerned with the common Science Citation Index subject categories of multidisciplinary chemistry, multidisciplinary materials and science, and physical chemistry. About one half China's ESC papers were internationally collaborative and the eight major industrialized countries (the USA, Germany, the UK, Japan, France, Canada, Russia, and Italy) played a prominent role in scientific collaboration with China, especially the USA. The Chinese Academy of Sciences took the leading position of institutions with many branches. The "985 Project" stimulated the most productive institutions for academic research with a huge funding injection and the universities in Hong Kong showed good scientific performance. The citation impact of internationally collaborative papers differed among fields and international collaborations made positive contributions to academic research in China.

Abstract:Based on the phenomena related with"power-orientated"culture,a hypothesis that a scientist would receive more scientific resources after his academic status raised is made.The information about the academicians of Chinese Academy of Sci- ences who represented the highest academic status in science community of China is collected,and also the scientific resources by the number of research programs that they received annually from the National Science Foundation of China are measured.Ac- cording to the characteristics of the data,Wilcoxon test is adopted to examine the relationship between them,and the result in de- tail didn't show much influence as expected.However,in general,it is drown the conclusion that academic status does matter in the process of distributing funding resources.Then some explanations on the result are given and the further directions for this re- search are pointed out as well.
A Comparative Study of Domestic and Cross‐country Impact of Chinese and U.S. Publications in Chemistry

Abstract:ABSTRACTBased on publications in Chemistry in 2015, this paper investigated the citation impact on domestic and foreign scholarly communities of Chinese and US publications, and to what extent does such impact relate to international collaboration and government funding. First‐ or corresponding authorship in international collaboration is defined as dominance and is taken into consideration. Citations to publications are designated as domestic citations (Chinese or US citations), partner citations or other citations according to overlap of countries of citing and cited publications. Significant difference exists in the two countries. Most citations of Chinese publications are from domestic and partner countries, with domestic citations being the mainstay. In contrast, US papers receive more other citations than domestic or partner citations, and citations from partner countries contribute significantly. US papers have higher global impact than those of China. High domestic citation propensity is associated with non‐international collaboration, dominance of focal country in international collaboration, and national funding support. Such phenomenon is more pronounced in Chinese papers. In other words, citation impact of Chinese publications is more limited in domestic community, whereas that of the US is more global.

Abstract:Academic journals,by which academic influence of a country is indicated,provide important sources for research.The number of papers collected by the three US science citation databases(SCI,SSCI,AHCI) is an important index of a discipline's international academic influence.An analysis of academic papers indexed by the three science citation databases over the last three decades in our country reveals that great gaps exist in the number of papers indexed by each database,which embodies great imbalance in the development and international academic influence of the three subjects,of which natural science developed at a high speed,social science developed rapidly,and art and humanities developed slowly.In order to enhance the international academic influence of our country,policies should be stipulated to balance the development of different subjects.The way to classify subjects should be reformed: the philosophical social science should be divided into two subjects——social science and art humanities.Correct methods should be used in evaluating different subjects and measures should be taken to assist academic journals in entering international citation databases and thereby promote the internationalization.

Abstract:China’s rise in science has aroused great interest in the research community and captured the attention of policy makers around the world. With its tremendous increase in research investment, fast growing SciTech workforce, and broadened access to international collaboration, China has become one of the most important contributors to global scientific knowledge. In 2016, China surpassed the United States as the largest producer of scientific articles indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus database (Tollefson, 2018; NSB, 2018). In terms of scientific articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), China surpassed the US as the number one knowledge producer in 2018 (Zhu & Liu, 2020).

Abstract:In 2010 and this for the first time in 20years the number of Chinese publications included in the Web of science dropped significantly. During the same period the USA kept a steady growth, although with a low rate of increase. This might indicate that China has reached a point of change in its growing speed in producing scientific publications. Why this could be the case is discussed in this short note.

Abstract:In recent decades China has witnessed an impressive improvement in science and its scientific output has become the second largest in the world. From both quantitative and qualitative perspectives, this paper aims to explore China’s comparative advantages in different academic disciplines. This paper employs two datasets: publications in all journals and publications in the top 5 % journals by discipline. With the former database we investigate the comparative advantages of each academic discipline in terms of absolute output volume, and with the latter database we evaluate the scientific output published in prestigious resources. Different from the criticism stated in previous literature, this paper finds that the quality of China’s research (represented by papers published in high-impact journals) is promising. Since 2006 the growth of scientific publications in China has been driven by papers published in English-language journals. The increasing visibility of Chinese science seems to be paving the way for its wider recognition and higher citation rates.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose the concept of scientific leadership, and examine the effect and evolution of various proximity dimensions (geographical, cognitive, institutional, social and economic) on scientific leadership flows. The data to capture scientific leadership consists of a set of multi-institution papers published between 2013 and 2017 in biomedical field. We filter 244 institutions that have positive scientific leadership every year. The gravity model (Tobit model) sheds light on the role and dynamic evolution of geographical, cognitive, institutional, social and economic proximity in shaping scientific leadership flows. Our findings can provide evidence and support for grant allocation policy to facilitate biomedical scientific research and collaborations.
Peer Effects of the Young Returnee Scientists: Evidence from the State Key Laboratories in China

Abstract:Attracting overseas scientists back to their home countries is an important scientific policy in the era of globalization. The returnee scientists not only have the potential to make high academic achievements by themselves but are also expected to influence other scientists. Using a data-set of 1,006 scientists from Chinese State Key Laboratories, this study finds that recruiting young returnee scientists has a positive effect on the number of their peer's highly-cited articles. It is also found that the peer effect is not achieved through the promotion of international collaborations of local scientists. It may be realized through other mechanisms, such as knowledge spillovers. As shown in the heterogeneity analysis, the adaptation of returnee scientists and the absorptive capacity of local scientists have an impact on the peer effects of the returnees, which reflects that knowledge dissemination and absorption play significant roles in the returnee's peer effect.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis paper investigates the relationships between scientists' international mobility and their academic disruptiveness, by using data collected from the ORCID website and the Web of Science database (2008‐2017). Specifically, our observations contain 1,388 scholars who joined “brain gain” and “brain drain” and moved to China in the past decades. Results illustrate that scientists' disruptiveness significantly increased after they moved to China.

Abstract:Chinese scientific output has increased dramatically in recent years, but its internal spatial structure has received scant attention. Estimated gravity models of intercity scientific coauthorships show that there are two types of spatial political bias in China, apart from the expected mass and distance effects. Intercity coauthorships involving Beijing are more common than Beijing's output volume and location would imply, and this Beijing bias is increasing over time. The second type of spatial political bias is greater intraprovincial collaboration than is accounted for by size and distance. The geography of Chinese science is thus not only monocentric as regards overall scientific output, but also exhibits unusually hierarchical collaboration patterns. Unlike in Europe and North America, national and regional capitals are becoming ever more important as scientific coordination centers.
Reforming China's Science Awards.

Abstract:Youyou Tu won the Nobel Prize, yet she failed to be nominated for China's own State Science and Technology (S&T) Awards. This has triggered a fierce debate on the S&T Award evaluation system in China. S&T awards are determined by bureaucrats and social circles (“guanxi”) ([ 1 ][1]). Because the system lacks transparency and allows no input from citizens or scientists, it is prone to opaque operations and influence by cronyism, favoritism, and bureaucracy. This has contaminated the science culture in China. Scientists feel obligated to develop “guanxi” networks instead of focusing on scientific discovery. A large portion of the country's science budget was estimated to have been wasted on networking dinners instead of invested in research labs ([ 1 ][1], [ 2 ][2]). Such priorities lead to scientific corruption and fraud ([ 3 ][3]). If nothing changes, talented scientists and scientific breakthroughs will continue to be suppressed. It is time for China to reform its S&T evaluation system. It should depend on merit, transparency, peer reviews, and objective measures. True participation by the science community should be institutionalized. The government should detach itself from the process. Decision-makers should consult with international academic circles and nongovernmental organizations. This new system is feasible with the availability of the Internet and social media. Mobile Landscape: An Analysis of Chinese Foreign-Educated Young Scientists

Abstract:In this study, we provide a systematic picture of young Chinese overseas scholars by investigating the "Thousand Youth Talents Program", a flagship talent program in China's current talent-funding system. Through investigating the demographics and the return status of overseas Chinese scholars, we attempt to answer a key question: how do they perform after their return. We conducted an analysis from five aspects, including personal characteristics, return institution statistics, educational background, discipline statistics, and position statistics. We find that most scientists were granted at the age of 33. The proportion of male far exceeds female. The Chinese Academy of Science is the most frequent recipient of returnee talents. The majority returned scientists obtained their doctoral degree from universities ranked 51 to 200 worldwide. The majority of the scholars have majors in life sciences, engineering, and material science. Only 13.65% of total returnees achieved tenure or tenure-track positions while abroad. Abstract:This paper researches on Matthew Effect in Sina Weibo microblogger. We choose the microblogs in the ranking list of Hot Microblog App in Sina Weibo microblogger as target of our study. The differences of repost number of microblogs in the ranking list between before and after the time when it enter the ranking list of Hot Microblog app are analyzed. And we compare the spread features of the microblogs in the ranking list with those hot microblogs not in the list and those ordinary microblogs of users who have some microblog in the ranking list before. Our study proves the existence of Matthew Effect in social network.
