Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of multimodal feedback on ergonomic measurements in a virtual environment (VE) for a typical simulated drilling task. In total, sixty male manufacturing industry workers were divided into five groups. One group performed the working task in a real environment (RE), and ergonomic measurements for this group were used as the baseline for evaluation. The other four groups performed the same task in a virtual environment with different feedback treatments (visual with or without auditory and/or tactile feedback). Five indices task completion time, maximum force capacity reduction, body part discomfort, rated perceived exertion, and rated task difficulty were used to evaluate the measurements of each of the four treatments in VE in comparison to the baseline group in RE. The results indicate that the five indices for each of the four treatment groups were significantly higher than those of the RE group. Moreover, the indices of the visual-only group were significantly higher than those of the other three groups with auditory and/or tactile feedback treatments. The findings of this study can provide a guideline for ergonomic evaluations of work designs in VE and for establishing a virtual reality simulation system. (c) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Virtual reality techniques have been increasingly used for ergonomic applications. However, it is always important to know whether the results obtained in a virtual environment (VE) are representative of a real environment (RE) ones. This paper presents our preliminary experimental results on the relationship between ergonomic measurements in VE and RE for some typical "drilling" tasks. The same tasks were carried out by thirty male manufacturing factory workers in both VE and RE. Five evaluation indices three objective (elbow angle, maximum force capacity reduction, and task completion time) and two subjective (BPD Body Part Discomfort and RPE Rated Perceived Exertion) were used to evaluate the similarities between VE and RE for the selected "drilling" tasks. Four of these indices (all except elbow angle) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in VE than in RE, which indicates that subjects experienced more discomfort and grew fatigued more quickly in VE. However, linear correlations (Pearson's rho: 0.635-0.807) between VE and RE were found for two of the five indices (BPD and maximum force capacity reduction).Relevance to industry: Using digital mock-ups and virtual reality simulations, industrial work activities can be evaluated to identify potential ergonomic problems during an early design stage, which reduces design time and costs, increases quality and improves customer satisfaction. A validated linear relationship can provide a reference for work design in virtual reality. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Exploring Effective Real-Time Ergonomic Guidance Methods for Immersive Virtual Reality Workspace

Abstract:Studying and working in Virtual Reality (VR) provides an immersive experience and enables free body movement for input. However, poor working posture in VR can result in discomfort and even lead to musculoskeletal problems over time. In this work, we explore how to use Mediapipe Blazepose to provide effective real-time ergonomic posture guidance methods in a virtual office environment using (1) auditory, (2) visual, and (3) combined auditory-visual cues. We do this in a within-subject design user study comparing these three conditions and a baseline condition where no guidance is provided. Our results indicate that all three guidance conditions significantly improved users’ ergonomic posture maintenance compared with the baseline condition. However, we found that the combined auditory-visual guidance is the most effective and preferred method. We also discuss multi-modal interaction methods, privacy concerns, and directions for future research.

Abstract:In this paper, an integrated virtual assembly simulation experiment environment of interactive workplace planning, assembly process simulation and ergonomics evaluation is built and it provides a new ways and means for interactive and visualized workplace design and process planning. A simple and effective method of measuring the movement manipulating data of operator is presented and can provide data source for ergonomics evaluation of the operator. In order to obtain these data in VE, movement data of the operator in real environment is transformed into VE and is related with virtual objects by the corresponding relation between VH and real hand (RH). Based on these data, the operator's fatigue index and energy consumption can be calculated. The conformability and fatigue of users for repetitive assembly operations are quantitatively evaluated to reduce the health problems of operators because of unreasonable layout and repetitive work.

Abstract:Musculoskeletal disorders are some of the most frequent manual work disorders. Employers worldwide pay high costs for their treatment and prevention. We present an innovative method for designing an ergonomic workplace. This method uses new technologies and supports not only ergonomics, but also a general improvement in the designing of the manufacturing process. Although many researchers claim that there is a huge potential for using new disruptive technologies like virtual reality and motion capture in ergonomics, there is still a lack of a comprehensive methodological basis for implementing these technologies. Our approach was designed using the expert group method. We can validate the manufacturing process and the ergonomics using a motion capture (MoCap) suit and a head-mounted display (HMD). There are no legislative restrictions for the tools which are used for ergonomic analyses, so we can use our outputs for workplace scoring. Firstly, we measure the anthropometrics of the proband. Then the proband is immersed in virtual reality and they go through a manufacturing process during which ergonomics data are collected. The design of a particular workplace or multiple workplaces can be validated based on the reactions, measurements, and input in real-time. After processing the data, the workplace can be adjusted accordingly. The proposed method has a time and economic benefit for workplace design, optimisation of workplace ergonomics, and shortens the time required for designing the production line layout. It also includes optional steps for validation using conventional methods. These steps were used for method validation on a representative workplace using on-site experiments. We validated it on a group of 20 healthy operators working in automotive production (age 22 to 35). A comparison study describes the classic methods of workplace ergonomics evaluation, compares the classic evaluation using biomechanical analysis, modern evaluation using a MoCap suit, and connection with virtual reality. We have proved the validity of the method using the comparison study. The results also showed other potential issues which can be further examined: like the role of peripheral vision or haptic feedback.

Abstract:Industrial maintenance and assembly (IMA) is an important activity for complex products, in which manual operations play an important role. Using virtual reality (VR) to support ergonomic design dates back many years. However, many applications only focus on the immersive simulation of IMA processes and ignore the quantitative evaluation based on the simulation data. In this paper, an integrated VR-based method for the ergonomic optimization of manual operations is proposed. The proposed method effectively integrates multiple VR hardware devices, motion capture data, and the evaluation method in the DELMIA™ environment. The method can capture the real-time motion data of the user. When the user conducts immersive simulation, the motion data is transformed and calculated, which maps and drives the virtual task in DELMIA. The configurable rapid upper limb assessment method is integrated into the system. The working posture can be evaluated and analyzed based on real human data according to actual needs. A practical case demonstrates the effectiveness of the method. Compared with traditional methods, the proposed method can not only enable designers to conduct immersive IMA simulation to improve design cognition, but also comprehensively analyze and evaluate the ergonomic design. For the designers, the time consumed and skill requirements are reduced, and the design efficiency and accuracy are improved.

Abstract:A digital 50th percentile dummy of Chinese males was built, and the AnyBody Modeling System was used for an inverse dynamics simulation of driller operation with a workover rig. The muscle activation degree of relevant muscle groups was used as a core indicator for ergonomic evaluation, to investigate the key layout parameters of the operation cabin-the functional relationship between the position of the brake pedal and the muscle activation degree of relevant muscle groups. Regression analysis was employed to determine the weight coefficient of relevant muscle groups, to build a model for the evaluation of overall comfort level of driller operation, and reveal the muscle fatigue characteristic of muscle groups participating in driller operation, thus providing an accurate basis for the fast screening and optimization of layout plans for operation cabins of workover rigs.

Abstract:Virtual human simulation integrated into virtual reality applications is mainly used for virtual representation of the user in virtual environment or for interactions between the user and the virtual avatar for cognitive tasks. In this paper, in order to prevent musculoskeletal disorders, the integration of virtual human simulation and VR application is presented to facilitate physical ergonomic evaluation, especially for physical fatigue evaluation of a given population. Immersive working environments are created to avoid expensive physical mock-up in conventional evaluation methods. Peripheral motion capture systems are used to capture natural movements and then to simulate the physical operations in virtual human simulation. Physical aspects of human's movement are then analyzed to determine the effort level of each key joint using inverse kinematics. The physical fatigue level of each joint is further analyzed by integrating a fatigue and recovery model on the basis of physical task parameters. All the process has been realized based on VRHIT platform and a case study is presented to demonstrate the function of the physical fatigue for a given population and its usefulness for worker selection.

Abstract:Workers in industrialized construction are often exposed to physical demands (e.g., repetitive motion and awkward body posture) associated with the risks of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, despite the utilization of automated equipment. To reduce exposure to these risks, an investigation of workstation design is needed. This paper proposes a virtual reality (VR)-based ergonomic assessment method that identifies ergonomic risk ratings proactively in the initial phases of workstation design, thus reducing the need for physical mock-ups and lessening the cost and time required to develop and implement an improved workstation design. This method was demonstrated in an operational task through an experiment conducted with 13 participants. Compared with the physical mock-up, the designed VR application achieved an accuracy of approximately 86% and 80%, respectively, in Rapid Upper Limb Assessment and Rapid Entire Body Assessment to assess risk. Moreover, a questionnaire was developed to obtain feedback from participants on their perceptions toward the designed VR application, which further supported the success of using the proposed VR-based ergonomic assessment method.

Abstract:Human errors are caused by unreasonable ergonomics design mostly. There are various ergonomics design and evaluation methods. However, traditional ergonomics evaluation methods are the absence of efficiency and convenience. This paper focuses on building a novel ergonomics method for system design and evaluation. This method enables to establish virtual circumstances, create a manikin model, assign the manikin to complete relevant tasks and perform man-machine ergonomic analysis in the process of task execution based on the software JACK. The ergonomic analysis includes dynamic spatial accessibility analysis, visibility analysis, working posture analysis and predicted time of completing tasks. This method has been vitrificated and validated by the task of rotating the left and right handles in the working scenario. Also, this method can be typically used to analyze and judge whether the human, machine and environment system is harmonious. In comparison to traditional methods, this method is given access to shorten the design cycle, reduce the research cost and improve the research efficiency.

Abstract:Based on the virtual site of a 3-D digital workshop, a solution scheme of a certain digital factory and the simulation result of the workshop product line, with the support of the ergonomic studies, this paper analyzed the factors that may influence the system ergonomics of the digital workshop from the perspective of work efficiency under human-machine environment. Human, machine and environment of a digital workshop and the interrelationship among them was studied from some aspects including simulation of workshop layout, ergonomics, workshop environment and culture as well as the efficiency of digital workshop. The paper also proposed some basic thoughts and references for workshop environment design based on the studies of workshop material flow and production rules.
A Data Analytic End-to-end Framework for the Automated Quantification of Ergonomic Risk Factors Across Multiple Tasks Using a Single Wearable Sensor

Abstract:Existing ergonomic risk assessment tools require monitoring of multiple risk factors. To eliminate the direct observation, we investigated the effectiveness of an end-to-end framework that works with the data from a single wearable sensor. The framework is used to identify the performed task as the major contextual risk factor, and then estimate the task duration and number of repetitions as two main indicators of task intensity. For evaluation of the framework, we recruited 37 participants to complete 10 simulated work tasks in a laboratory setting. In testing, we achieved an average accuracy of 92% for task identification, 7.3% error in estimation of task duration, and 7.1% error for counting the number of task repetitions. Moreover, we showed the utility of the framework outputs in two ergonomic tools to estimate the risk of injury. Overall, we indicated the feasibility of using data from wearable sensors to automate the ergonomic risk assessment in workplaces.

Abstract:Research in multi-modal interfaces aims to provide solutions to immersion and increase overall human performance. A promising direction is combining auditory, visual and haptic interaction between the user and the simulated environment. However, no extensive comparisons exist to show how combining audiovisuohaptic interfaces affects human perception reflected on task performance. Our paper explores this idea. We present a thorough, full-factorial comparison of how all combinations of audio, visual and haptic interfaces affect performance during manipulation. We evaluate how each interface combination affects performance in a study (N=25) consisting of manipulating tasks of varying difficulty. Performance is assessed using both subjective, assessing cognitive workload and system usability, and objective measurements, incorporating time and spatial accuracy-based metrics. Results show that regardless of task complexity, using stereoscopic-vision with the VRHMD increased performance across all measurements by 40% compared to monocular-vision from the display monitor. Using haptic feedback improved outcomes by 10% and auditory feedback accounted for approximately 5% improvement.

Abstract:The virtual product development is the unified process of product design, evaluation and validation. Ergonomics analysis is the important step for product validation in the process, and the virtual human is key to the computer-aided product ergonomics. In this paper, ergonomics simulation system is studied based on some elements of ergonomics analysis and assessment. An ergonomics virtual human is built, which is a unified framework made up of biomechanics/physiology-based model, anthropometrical model, posture and motion model, task model, human reactions and decision-making model and human factor analysis model. Abstract:This study proposes an integrated ergonomic evaluation designed to identify unsafe postures, whereby postural risks during industrial work are assessed in the context of virtual reality-based smart manufacturing. Unsafe postures were recognised by identifying the displacements of the centre of mass (COM) of body keypoints using a computer vision-based deep learning (DL) convolutional neural network approach. The risk levels for the identified unsafe postures were calculated using ergonomic risk assessment tools rapid upper limb assessment and rapid whole-body assessment. An analysis of variance was conducted to determine significant differences between the vertical and horizontal directions of postural movements associated with the most unsafe postures. The findings assess the ergonomic risk levels and identify the most unsafe postures during industrial work in smart manufacturing using DL method. The identified postural risks can help industry managers and researchers acquire a better understanding of unsafe postures. This study aims to identify unsafe postures and calculate risk levels in a VR-based smart manufacturing context. Deep learning is applied to identify unsafe postures by detecting COM displacements and risk levels are calculated using ergonomic risk assessment tools. Results revealed the most unsafe body postures, crucial for workers' safety.

Abstract:VR technology presents exciting prospects for immersive forklift training environments. VR facilitates hands-on learning without the risks of real world errors. Real-time multimodal feedback (such as visual and haptic) is an effective way to enhance learning outcomes and skill acquisition. However, the efficacy and usability of real-time multimodal feedback provided for VR-based forklift driving needs to be investigated, as its impact on training outcomes remains unexplored. We aim to understand how various feedback modalities influence task performance, perceived workload, and user preferences. Fifteen (3 female, 12 male) individuals participated and completed VR-based forklift driving tasks with four feedback conditions (No feedback, visual, haptic, combined visual and haptic). A significant main effect of Feedback was found for completion time. Mental demand and frustration were affected by the Sex and Feedback interaction. These differences in the perception of feedback modalities underscore the importance of considering diverse user demographics when designing feedback systems.

Abstract:Virtual human techniques have been used a lot in industrial design in order to consider human factors and ergonomics as early as possible, and it has been integrated into VR applications to complete ergonomic evaluation tasks. In order to generalize the evaluation task in VE, especially for physical fatigue evaluation, we integrated a new fatigue model into a virtual environment platform. Virtual Human Status is proposed in this paper in order to assess the difficulty of manual handling operations, especially from the physical perspective. The decrease of the physical capacity before and after an operation is used as an index to indicate the difficulty level. The reduction of physical strength is simulated in a theoretical approach on the basis of a fatigue model in which fatigue resistances of different muscle groups were regressed from 24 existing maximum endurance time models. A framework based on digital human modeling technique is established to realize the comparison of physical status. An assembly case in airplane assembly is simulated and analyzed under the framework in VRHIT experiment platform. The endurance time and the decrease of the joint moment strengths are simulated. The experimental result in simulated operations under laboratory conditions confirms the feasibility of the theoretical approach: integration of virtual human simulation into virtual reality for physical fatigue evaluation.

Abstract:In the evolving realm of ergonomics, there is a growing demand for enhanced comfortability, visibility, and accessibility in the operation of engineering machinery. This study introduces an innovative approach to assess the ergonomics of a driller's cabin by utilizing a digital human. Through the utilization of inertial motion capture sensors, the method enables the operation of a virtual driller animated by real human movements, thereby producing more precise and realistic human–machine interaction data. Additionally, this study develops a simplified model for the human upper limbs, facilitating the calculation of joint forces and torques. An ergonomic analysis platform, encompassing a virtual driller's cabin and a digital human model, is constructed using Unity 3D. This platform enables the quantitative evaluation of comfortability, visibility, and accessibility. Its versatility extends beyond the current scope, offering substantial support for product development and enhancement.
