Abstract:In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth of activity on multiscale modeling and computation. In particular, the multiscale hybrid numerical methods are those that combine multiple models defined at fundamentally different length and time scales within the same overall spatial and temporal domain. For examples, a framework of hybrid continuum and molecular dynamics multiscale method has been developed to simulate micro- and nanoscale fluid flows, which combines the continuum computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or the mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann method for the bulk flow region and the atomistic molecular dynamics for the interface region. The similar idea of constrained variation has also been used in developing multiscale fluid turbulent models for constrained dynamic subgrid-scale stress model, Reynolds stress constrained large eddy simulation (RSC-LES) for wall-bounded turbulent flows with massive separation and heat flux constrained large eddy simulation. For RSC-LES, our model is able to solve the traditional log-layer mismatch problem in RANS/LES approaches and can predict mean velocity, turbulent stress and skin friction coefficients more accurate than pure dynamic large eddy models and traditional detached eddy simulation using the same grid resolution. Our results demonstrate the capability of multiscale simulation methods for complex fluid systems and the necessity of physical constraints on the multiscale methods.

Abstract:Many multiscale methods are based on the idea of extracting macroscopic behavior of solutions by solving an array of microscale models over small domains. A key ingredient in such multiscale methods is the boundary condition and the size of the computational domain over which the microscale problems are solved. This problem is systematically investigated in the present paper in the context of modeling strongly heterogeneous media. Three different boundary conditions are considered: the periodic boundary condition, Dirichlet boundary condition, and the Neumann boundary condition. Each is applied to several benchmark problems: the random checker-board problem, periodic problem with isotropic macroscale behavior, periodic problem with anisotropic macroscale behavior and periodic laminated media. In each case, convergence studies are conducted as the domain size for the microscale problem is changed. Convergence rates as well as the size of fluctuations in the computed effective coefficients are compared for the different formulations. In addition, we will discuss a mixed Dirichlet–Neumann boundary condition that is often used in porous medium modeling. We explain why that leads to unsatisfactory results and how it can be corrected. Also discussed are the different averaging methods used in extracting the effective coefficients.

Abstract:This paper presents a multiscale modeling framework for granular media based on a hierarchical cross-scale approach. The overall material is treated as a continuum on the macroscale and the corresponding boundary value problem is solved by finite element method (FEM). At each Gauss point of the FEM mesh, a discrete element assembly is embedded from which the material behavior is obtained for the global FEM computation. It is demonstrated that this technique may capture the salient macroscopic behavior of granular media in a natural manner, and meanwhile helps to bypass the conventional phenomenological nature of continuum modeling approaches. Moreover, the framework provides us with rich information on the particle level which can be closely correlated to the macroscopic material response and hence helps to shed lights on the cross-scaling understanding of granular media. Specific linkages between the microscopic origins and mechanisms and the macroscopic responses can be conveniently developed. As a demonstrative example, the strain localization of granular sand in biaxial compression test is investigated by the multiscale approach to showcase the above features.

Abstract:We present a hierarchical multi-scale framework to model geotechnical problems relevant to granular media. The framework employs a rigorous hierarchical coupling between the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM). The FEM is used to discretise the macroscopic geometric domain of a boundary value problem into a FEM mesh. A DEM assembly with memory of its loading history is embedded at each Gauss integration point of the mesh to receive the global deformation from the FEM as input boundary conditions and is solved for the incremental stress-strain relation at the specific material point to advance the FEM computation. The hierarchical framework helps to avoid the phenomenological nature of conventional continuum approaches of constitutive modelling and meanwhile retains the computational efficiency of the FEM in solving large-scale Boundary Value Problems (BVPs). By virtue of its hierarchical structure, the predictive power of the proposed method can be further unleashed with proper implementation of parallel computing techniques. By corroborating the rich information obtained from the particle level with the macroscopically observed responses, the framework helps to shed light on a cross-scale understanding of granular media. We demonstrate the predictive capability of the proposed framework by simulations of shear localisations in monotonic biaxial compression and cavity inflation in a thick-walled cylinder, as well as liquefaction and cyclic mobility in cyclic simple shear tests.

Abstract:We present a multiscale method for a class of problems that are locally self-similar in scales and hence do not have scale separation.Our method is based on the framework of the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM).At each point where macroscale data is needed, we perform several small scale simulations using the microscale model, then using the results and local selfsimilarity to predict the needed data at the scale of interest.We illustrate this idea by computing the effective macroscale transport of a percolation network at the percolation threshold.

Abstract:The heterogeneous multiscale method, is presented as a general methodology for an efficient numerical computation of problems with multiple scales. The method relies on an efficient coupling between the macroscopic and microscopic models. In case the macroscopic model is not explicitly available or is invalid in part of the domain, the microscopic model is used to supply the necessary data for the macroscopic model. Scale separation is exploited so that coarse-grained variables can be evolved on macroscopic spatial/temporal scales using data that are predicted based on the simulation of the microscopic process on microscale spatial/temporal domains. Applications to homogenization, dislocation dynamics and crack propagation are discussed.

Abstract:In many problems of multiscale modeling, we are interested in capturing the macroscale behavior of the system with the help of some accurate microscale models, bypassing the need of using empirical macroscale models. This paper gives an overview of the recent efforts on establishing general strategies for designing such algorithms. After reviewing some important classical examples, the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics, the quasicontinuum method for modeling the deformation of solids and the kinetic schemes for gas dynamics, we discuss three attempts that have been made for designing general strategies: Brandt’s renormalization multi-grid method (RMG), the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM) and the “equation-free” approach. We will discuss the relative merits and difficulties with each strategy and we will make an attempt to clarify their similarities and differences. We end with some perspectives about this kind of approach.

Abstract:The framework of the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM) is used to develop numerical methods for the study of macroscale dynamics of fluids in situations, where either the constitutive relation or the boundary conditions are not explicitly available and have to be inferred from microscopic models such as molecular dynamics. Continuum hydrodynamics is used as the macroscopic model, while molecular dynamics serves as the microscopic model and is used to supply the necessary data, e.g., the stress or the boundary condition, for the macroscopic model. Scale separation is exploited so that the macroscopic variables can be evolved in macroscopic spatial/temporal scales using data that are estimated from molecular dynamics simulation on microscale spatial/temporal domains. This naturally decouples the micro and macrospatial and temporal scales whenever possible. Applications are presented for models of complex fluids, contact line dynamics, and a simple model of non-trivial fluid–solid interactions.

Abstract:We develop a general multiscale method for coupling atomistic and continuum simulations using the framework of the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM). Both the atomistic and the continuum models are formulated in the form of conservation laws of mass, momentum and energy. A macroscale solver, here the finite volume scheme, is used everywhere on a macrogrid; whenever necessary the macroscale fluxes are computed using the microscale model, which is in turn constrained by the local macrostate of the system, e.g. the deformation gradient tensor, the mean velocity and the local temperature. We discuss how these constraints can be imposed in the form of boundary conditions. When isolated defects are present, we develop an additional strategy for defect tracking. This method naturally decouples the atomistic time scales from the continuum time scale. Applications to shock propagation, thermal expansion, phase boundary and twin boundary dynamics are presented.

These problems can be either linear or nonlinear, periodic or non-periodic, stationary or dynamic. Abstract:Recently, several approaches for multiscale simulations for problems with high contrast and no scale separation are introduced. Among them is the nonlocal multicontinua (NLMC) method, which introduces multiple macroscopic variables in each computational grid. These approaches explore the entire coarse block resolution and one can obtain optimal convergence results independent of contrast and scales. However, these approaches are not amenable to many multiscale simulations, where the subgrid effects are much smaller than the coarse-mesh resolution. For example, the molecular dynamics of shale gas occurs in much smaller length scales compared to the coarse-mesh size, which is of orders of meters. In this case, one can not explore the entire coarse-grid resolution in evaluating effective properties. In this paper, we merge the concepts of nonlocal multicontinua methods and Representative Volume Element (RVE) concepts to explore problems with extreme scale separation. The first step of this approach is to use sub-grid scale (sub to RVE) to write a large-scale macroscopic system. We call it intermediate scale macroscale system. In the next step, we couple this intermediate macroscale system to the simulation grid model, which are used in simulations. This is done using RVE concepts, where we relate intermediate macroscale variables to the macroscale variables defined on our simulation coarse grid. Our intermediate coarse model allows formulating macroscale variables correctly and coupling them to the simulation grid. We present the general concept of our approach and present details of single-phase flow. Some numerical results are presented. For nonlinear examples, we use machine learning techniques to compute macroscale parameters.

Abstract:We carry out an error analysis for the heterogeneous multi-scale method for the case when the macroscale process is that of gas dynamics or more generally nonlinear conservation laws and the microscale process is an atomistic model such as kinetic Monte Carlo methods or molecular dynamics (MD). We will consider problems of type B as defined in [4], i.e. the macroscale constitutive relations are unknown and are extracted from the microscopic model. In addition to the standard error in the macroscale solver, a new error term occurs in estimating the data, here the fluxes. This new error term consists of three parts: the relaxation error, the sampling error and the error due to the finite size of the atomistic simulation. Our results serve as guidelines for designing multiscale methods, as was done in [13, 16].

Abstract:We present a new general framework for designing multiscale methods. Compared with previous work such as Brandt's systematic up-scaling, the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM) and the ''equation-free'' approach, this new framework has the distinct feature that it does not require reinitializing the microscale model at each macro time step or each macro iteration step. In the new strategy, the macro- and micro-models evolve simultaneously using different time steps (and therefore different clocks), and they exchange data at every step. The micro-model uses its own appropriate time step. The macro-model runs at a slower pace than required by accuracy and stability considerations for the macroscale dynamics, in order for the micro-model to relax. Examples are discussed and application to modeling complex fluids is presented.

Abstract:We present a general mathematical frame work for modeling the macroscale behavior of a multiscale system using only microscale models, by formulating the effective macroscale models as dynamic models on the underlying fiber bundles. This framework allows us to carry out seamless multiscale modeling using traditional numerical techniques. At the same time, they give rise to an interesting mathematical structure and new interesting mathematical problems. We discuss several examples from homogenization problems, continuum modeling of solids based on atomistic or electronic structure models, macroscale behavior of interacting diffusion, and continuum modeling of complex fluids based on kinetic and Brownian dynamics models.
Local existence of strong solutions to micro-macro models for reactive transport in evolving porous media

Abstract:Two-scale models pose a promising approach in simulating reactive flow and transport in evolving porous media. Classically, homogenized flow and transport equations are solved on the macroscopic scale, while effective parameters are obtained from auxiliary cell problems on possibly evolving reference geometries (micro-scale). Despite their perspective success in rendering lab/field-scale simulations computationally feasible, analytic results regarding the arising two-scale bilaterally coupled system often restrict to simplified models. In this paper, we first derive smooth-dependence results concerning the partial coupling from the underlying geometry to macroscopic quantities. Therefore, alterations of the representative fluid domain are described by smooth paths of diffeomorphisms. Exploiting the gained regularity of the effective space- and time-dependent macroscopic coefficients, we present local-in-time existence results for strong solutions to the partially coupled micro-macro system using fixed-point arguments. What is more, we extend our results to the bilaterally coupled diffusive transport model including a level-set description of the evolving geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a multiscale model reduction framework within Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) for nonlinear elliptic problems. We consider an exemplary problem, which consists of nonlinear p-Laplacian with heterogeneous coefficients. The main challenging feature of this problem is that local subgrid models are nonlinear involving the gradient of the solution (e.g., in the case of scale separation, when using homogenization). Our main objective is to develop snapshots and local spectral problems, which are the main ingredients of GMsFEM, for these problems. Our contributions can be summarized as follows. (1) We re-cast the multiscale model reduction problem onto the boundaries of coarse cells. This is important and allows capturing separable scales as discussed. (2) We introduce nonlinear eigenvalue problems in the snapshot space for these nonlinear "harmonic" functions. (3) We present convergence analysis and numerical results, which show that our approaches can recover the fine-scale solution with a few degrees of freedom. The proposed methods can, in general, be used for more general nonlinear problems, where one needs nonlinear local spectral decomposition.

Abstract:The multiscale coupled reactive transport model has attracted increasing attention in recent years because it can reveal the different characteristics of the spatial structure evolution of porous media. A micro–macro model of multiscale coupled reaction transport has been derived from detailed pore-scale models by using the upscaling technique based on homogenization method. Because of its clear upscaling theory, it has been widely used. However, the current micro–macro model still has obvious defects in dealing with the geochemical reaction process in multimineral systems. To solve this problem, we coupled the model with existing geochemical models that have been widely verified so that the model has the ability to deal with multimineral reactions under complex hydrochemical conditions. The newly developed coupling model and the current model are used to simulate the same problem, which proves the superiority of the new model for geochemical reaction prediction. We extend the new model to a two-dimensional scanning electron microscope image, where a challenging medium geometry setup is handled well during simulation. At the same time, the new model also accurately captures the abrupt changes in macroscopic effective parameters caused by the change in geometric topological structure. Finally, we use the principle of mass conservation to quantify numerical errors caused by geometric evolution, ensuring the accuracy and validity of simulation results, which verifies the numerical scheme of the model to a certain extent.

Abstract:The "equation-free'' approach has been proposed in recent years as a general framework for developing multiscale methods to efficiently capture the macroscale behavior of a system using only the microscale models. In this paper, we take a close look at some of the algorithms proposed under the "equation-free'' umbrella, the projective integrators and the patch dynamics. We discuss some very simple examples in the context of the "equation-free'' approach. These examples seem to indicate that while its general philosophy is quite attractive and indeed similar to many other approaches in concurrent multiscale modeling, there are severe limitations to the specific implementation proposed by the equation-free approach.
