Abstract:In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth of activity on multiscale modeling and computation. In particular, the multiscale hybrid numerical methods are those that combine multiple models defined at fundamentally different length and time scales within the same overall spatial and temporal domain. For examples, a framework of hybrid continuum and molecular dynamics multiscale method has been developed to simulate micro- and nanoscale fluid flows, which combines the continuum computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or the mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann method for the bulk flow region and the atomistic molecular dynamics for the interface region. The similar idea of constrained variation has also been used in developing multiscale fluid turbulent models for constrained dynamic subgrid-scale stress model, Reynolds stress constrained large eddy simulation (RSC-LES) for wall-bounded turbulent flows with massive separation and heat flux constrained large eddy simulation. For RSC-LES, our model is able to solve the traditional log-layer mismatch problem in RANS/LES approaches and can predict mean velocity, turbulent stress and skin friction coefficients more accurate than pure dynamic large eddy models and traditional detached eddy simulation using the same grid resolution. Our results demonstrate the capability of multiscale simulation methods for complex fluid systems and the necessity of physical constraints on the multiscale methods.
A Hierarchical Model for Cross-Scale Simulation of Granular Media

Abstract:This paper presents a multiscale modeling framework for granular media based on a hierarchical cross-scale approach. The overall material is treated as a continuum on the macroscale and the corresponding boundary value problem is solved by finite element method (FEM). At each Gauss point of the FEM mesh, a discrete element assembly is embedded from which the material behavior is obtained for the global FEM computation. It is demonstrated that this technique may capture the salient macroscopic behavior of granular media in a natural manner, and meanwhile helps to bypass the conventional phenomenological nature of continuum modeling approaches. Moreover, the framework provides us with rich information on the particle level which can be closely correlated to the macroscopic material response and hence helps to shed lights on the cross-scaling understanding of granular media. Specific linkages between the microscopic origins and mechanisms and the macroscopic responses can be conveniently developed. As a demonstrative example, the strain localization of granular sand in biaxial compression test is investigated by the multiscale approach to showcase the above features.

Abstract:With the development of materials science and technology into the nano-/micro-world, multi-scale problems have become a research focus. Multi-scale calculations usually select a periodic structure as a representative unit with a certain physical meaning and can represent the material properties at a given scale. However, due to the large number of representative elements with complex shape and boundary conditions, the workload of multi-scale calculations is normally huge. In the present effort, a novel virtual scale method is proposed for multi-scale calculations. To demonstrate the validity and significance of the new algorithm, multi-scale calculations have been carried out for the prediction of properties of the ever-popular fiber reinforced composite materials. The equivalent elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTEs) of fiber reinforced plastic in different scales predicted by the new method have been compared with those predicted by the well-established finite element method (FEM) and checked against the experimental results. The good agreements offer solid proof in terms of the validity of the newly developed virtual scale method. In principle, the method can be extended to tackle all multi-scale problems.

Abstract:The heterogeneous multiscale method, is presented as a general methodology for an efficient numerical computation of problems with multiple scales. The method relies on an efficient coupling between the macroscopic and microscopic models. In case the macroscopic model is not explicitly available or is invalid in part of the domain, the microscopic model is used to supply the necessary data for the macroscopic model. Scale separation is exploited so that coarse-grained variables can be evolved on macroscopic spatial/temporal scales using data that are predicted based on the simulation of the microscopic process on microscale spatial/temporal domains. Applications to homogenization, dislocation dynamics and crack propagation are discussed.

Abstract:Computational multiscale modeling encompasses a wide range of end-products and a great number of technological applications. This paper provides an overview of the computational multiscale modeling approach based on the utilization of MBN Explorer and MBN Studio software packages, the universal and powerful tools for computational modeling in different areas of challenging research arising in connection with the development of novel and emerging technologies. Three illustrative case studies of multiscale modeling are reviewed in relation to (i) the development of novel sources of monochromatic high-energy radiation based on the crystalline undulators, (ii) controlled fabrication of nanostructures using the focused electron-beam induced deposition, and (iii) ion-beam cancer therapy. These examples illustrate the key algorithms and unique methodologies implemented in the software.

The Heterogeneous Multiscale Method and the “ Equation-free ” Approach to Multiscale Modeling

Abstract:In many problems of multiscale modeling, we are interested in capturing the macroscale behavior of the system with the help of some accurate microscale models, bypassing the need of using empirical macroscale models. This paper gives an overview of the recent efforts on establishing general strategies for designing such algorithms. After reviewing some important classical examples, the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics, the quasicontinuum method for modeling the deformation of solids and the kinetic schemes for gas dynamics, we discuss three attempts that have been made for designing general strategies: Brandt’s renormalization multi-grid method (RMG), the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM) and the “equation-free” approach. We will discuss the relative merits and difficulties with each strategy and we will make an attempt to clarify their similarities and differences. We end with some perspectives about this kind of approach.

Abstract:Biological processes involve a variety of spatial and temporal scales. A holistic understanding of many biological processes therefore requires multi-scale models which capture the relevant properties on all these scales. In this manuscript we review mathematical modelling approaches used to describe the individual spatial scales and how they are integrated into holistic models. We discuss the relation between spatial and temporal scales and the implication of that on multi-scale modelling. Based upon this overview over state-of-the-art modelling approaches, we formulate key challenges in mathematical and computational modelling of biological multi-scale and multi-physics processes. In particular, we considered the availability of analysis tools for multi-scale models and model-based multi-scale data integration. We provide a compact review of methods for model-based data integration and model-based hypothesis testing. Furthermore, novel approaches and recent trends are discussed, including computation time reduction using reduced order and surrogate models, which contribute to the solution of inference problems. We conclude the manuscript by providing a few ideas for the development of tailored multi-scale inference methods.

Abstract:The general representation about the multiscale modeling and related approaches is briefly reported. The hybrid schemes for coupling between quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics subsystem are introduced and reviewed focusing on recent progress involving the density functional theory based formalism and the methodology of scaled position method as well as scaled position link atom method. The hybrid approaches have important theoretical sense and application potential, especially, for the fields of materials science. Concurrently the hybrid energy density method – density functional-based is also reported, which is from our recent works. Finally, the look into future is briefly presented.

A framework is presented for the analysis of the stability and accuracy of HMM. Applications to problems such as homogenization, molecular dynamics, kinetic models and interfacial dynamics are discussed.

Abstract:Neural network-based machine learning is capable of approximating functions in very high dimension with unprecedented efficiency and accuracy. This has opened up many exciting new possibilities, one of which is to use machine learning algorithms to assist multi-scale modeling. In this review, we use three examples to illustrate the process involved in using machine learning in multi-scale modeling: ab initio molecular dynamics, ab initio meso-scale models, such as Landau models and generalized Langevin equation, and hydrodynamic models for non-Newtonian flows.

Abstract:The inherent complexity of biomedical systems is well recognized; they are multi-scale, multi-science systems, bridging a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. This article reviews the currently emerging field of multi-scale modelling in computational biomedicine. Many exciting multi-scale models exist or are under development. However, an underpinning multi-scale modelling methodology seems to be missing. We propose a direction that complements the classic dynamical systems approach and introduce two distinct case studies, transmission of resistance in human immunodeficiency virus spreading and in-stent restenosis in coronary artery disease.

Abstract:The phenomena of linking length scales and multi levels as well as the related multi-scale coupling reflect the basic nature of matter world and the intrinsic character of multi-discipline cross, it has great wealth scientific connotation. The unified expression and performance of multi-level modeling in which integrated quantum mechanics, atomistic simulation, coarse-grained technique, quasi-continuum description and finite element method are in seed and in progress. The objective lies in to realize the design of materials and the prediction of properties. The central problems in multi-scale modeling are to found Hamiltonian of system and to find the constraint conditions as well as the related criterion. This report will introduce some basic problems for multi-scale correlation in materials science, and to give the brief description of the multi-resolution approach; at the same time, the related treating scheme is summarized. With regard to the multi-scale modeling and related resolution calculation, we emphasize to write the analytic transmission mode of parameters and concurrent approach for linking scales, in which our basic idea and theoretical programme as well as the equations are briefly presented, and the calculation results are given in part.

Abstract:The multiscale computational methods have been paid wide attention to in recent years.Key issues in multiscale computation include the method to realize seamless transitionbetween molecular simulation method and continuum-based simulation methodand the method to construct micro- and meso-scopic computational models effectively and realistically.The meshfree particle methods, which have been developing fast in recent twenty years, especially the material point method (MPM),are focused on and successfully applied in many fields owing to the outstanding characteristics.The development of MPM and its derivative methods in the field of multiscale computation in recent years,which includes the algorithms of seamlessly connecting molecular dynamics and MPM,suppressing the reflection of high-frequency motionsand modeling micro- and meso-structures, and their applications,is summarized in this paper.The advantages of multiscale computational methods based on MPM are demonstrated.

Abstract:High fidelity modeling of multiphysical systems is typically achieved using nonlinear coupled differential equations, often with multiscale model coefficients. These simulations are performed using finite-element methods with implicit time stepping. Within each time step, nonlinearities are numerically linearized using Newton-like iterative solvers, which increases the computational complexity. For multiscale systems fulfilling a scale-separation criterion, this complexity can be mitigated by upscaling the high fidelity models to describe the effective behavior of the system alone. To extend the validity of these models to systems with partial scale-separation, we propose a Multi-Grid Two-Scale (MGTS) modeling approach. This approach consists of the nonlinear upscaled models as a coarse-scale model and a linear fine-scale corrector. The derivation of the corrector is based on linearizing the high-fidelity models about their upscaled versions. This approach has the ability to capture most of the fine-scale perturbations, while maintaining a reduced computational complexity as a consequence of restricting the iterative solvers to coarse-scale grids in the upscaled domain. Additionally, the coarse- and fine-scale models are only weakly coupled, enabling a parallelization-in-time feature of the MGTS model. We apply the MGTS approach to a nonlinear model for fluid-saturated poro-elastic materials in thin domains. The performance of the MGTS approach is demonstrated by executing several numerical experiments based on the finite-element method.

Abstract:A multiscale model and numerical method for computing microstructures with large and inhomogeneous deformation is established, in which the microscopic and macroscopic information is recovered by coupling the finite order rank-one convex envelope and the finite element method. The method is capable of computing microstructures which are locally finite order laminates. Numerical experiments on a double-well problem show that plenty of stress free large deformations can be achieved by microstructures consisting of piecewise simple twin laminates.

Abstract:Machine learning is increasingly recognized as a promising technology in the biological, biomedical, and behavioral sciences.There can be no argument that this technique is incredibly successful in image recognition with immediate applications in diagnostics including electrophysiology, radiology, or pathology, where we have access to massive amounts of annotated data. However, machine learning often performs poorly in prognosis, especially when dealing with sparse data.This is a field where classical physics-based simulation seems to remain irreplaceable. In this review, we identify areas in the biomedical sciences where machine learning and multiscale modeling can mutually benefit from one another: Machine learning can integrate physics-based knowledge in the form of governing equations, boundary conditions, or constraints to manage ill-posted problems and robustly handle sparse and noisy data; multiscale modeling can integrate machine learning to create surrogate models, identify system dynamics and parameters, analyze sensitivities, and quantify uncertainty to bridge the scales and understand the emergence of function. With a view towards applications in the life sciences, we discuss the state of the art of combining machine learning and multiscale modeling, identify applications and opportunities, raise open questions, and address potential challenges and limitations. We anticipate that it will stimulate discussion within the community of computational mechanics and reach out to other disciplines including mathematics, statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, systems biology, and precision medicine to join forces towards creating robust and efficient models for biological systems.
