Abstract:The disclosure of structure-dependent activity is always of great significance to rationalize the design of catalyst for achieving an excellent catalytic performance. Three clearly shaped and structured α-Fe 2 O 3 crystallites (nano-truncated hexagonal bipyramids (THB), nano-cubes (QC) and nano-spheres (RC)) were used as precursors to successfully synthesize their counterparts of three Fe 3 O 4 nano-crystallites, marked as THB-R, QC-R and RC-R, respectively, which remained consistent in shape. HRTEM images reveal that the three as-synthesized Fe 3 O 4 nano-crystallites expose different facets, in which (311) plane is exclusively exposed in RC-R, and the mixed planes of (111) and (222) are exposed in THB-R and QC-R. DFT calculations reveal that the Fe site located at the exposed (311) plane is more preferential to selectively adsorb α‐hydroxyl group (α-C-OH) in lactic acid (LA) molecule than the other two exposed planes of (111) and (222) on basis of adsorption energy of LA molecule, leading to a high activity on C O cleavage. The thermoanalysis of sample further indicates that the Fe site in RC-R is covered with less organic polymer or coke, than QC-R and THB-R, endowing an excellent activity and stability during the catalytic reaction. At 380 °C and LA LHSV of 16 h −1 under the inert atmosphere, the catalyst offered a satisfactory propionic acid selectivity of nearly 70%, and its catalytic performance hardly decayed within 34 h on stream.

Abstract:Abstract Redox catalysts play a vital role in chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation processes, which have recently been considered to be a promising prospect for propylene production. This work describes the coupling of surface acid catalysis and selective oxidation from lattice oxygen over MoO 3 -Fe 2 O 3 redox catalysts for promoted propylene production. Atomically dispersed Mo species over γ-Fe 2 O 3 introduce effective acid sites for the promotion of propane conversion. In addition, Mo could also regulate the lattice oxygen activity, which makes the oxygen species from the reduction of γ-Fe 2 O 3 to Fe 3 O 4 contribute to selectively oxidative dehydrogenation instead of over-oxidation in pristine γ-Fe 2 O 3 . The enhanced surface acidity, coupled with proper lattice oxygen activity, leads to a higher surface reaction rate and moderate oxygen diffusion rate. Consequently, this coupling strategy achieves a robust performance with 49% of propane conversion and 90% of propylene selectivity for at least 300 redox cycles and ultimately demonstrates a potential design strategy for more advanced redox catalysts.

Abstract:Propionic acid obtained from fermentation-derived lactic acid has been appreciated since propionic acid is mainly used as a food preservative, satisfying a natural food idea. Vapor-phase deoxygenation of lactic acid to biopropionic acid over dispersant-dispersed molybdenum oxides was investigated in this work. It was found that different dispersants displayed different performances, and the N element in dispersants had a positive effect. MoO3 was soon reduced to MoO2 under the in situ hydrogen atmosphere, and the latter played an important role in catalytic conversion of lactic acid to propionic acid. The discriminating experiments revealed that propionic acid was formed mainly through direct deoxygenation of lactic acid (main path) and not hydrogenation of acrylic acid as an intermediate (minor path). Furthermore, only in situ hydrogen was efficient, and external hydrogen was hardly efficient during catalytic reaction. Abstract:Fe-MnO2 nanocomposite was prepared via a redox–precipitation method combined with a subsequent aging treatment at low-temperature. Various characterizations showed that Fe was incorporated into MnO2 lattice that changed the relative intensity of MnO2 crystal planes. Thus, the structural defect was formed and the anisotropic growth of the MnO2 crystallite phase was suppressed. As a result, the morphology of MnO2 was transformed from nanowires to nanoparticles. In addition, the catalytic property of Fe-MnO2 was significantly enhanced than that of pristine MnO2 for the complete oxidation of o-xylene. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for regulating MnO2 texture and activity.
Bifunctional CdS-MoO2 catalysts for selective oxidation of lactic acid coupled with photocatalytic H2 production

Abstract:The persistent hurdles of charge rapid recombination, inefficient use of light and utilization of sacrificial reagents have plagued the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). In this research, tiny MoO2 nanoparticles of 10 nm in diameter were prepared through a straightforward solvothermal approach with a specific ratio of oleylamine and oleic acid as stabilizers. The critical factor in the synthesis process was found to be the ratio of oleylamine to oleic acid. Moreover, a two-phase interface assembly method facilitated the uniform deposition of MoO2 onto CdS nanorods. Due to the localized plasmonic-thermoelectric effect on the surface of MoO2 along with its abundant oxygen vacancies, the composite catalyst exhibited outstanding photo-utilization efficiency and an abundance of active sites. The CdS-MoO2 composite displayed a unique photochemical property in transforming lactic acid into pyruvic acid and generating hydrogen simultaneously. After exposure to artificial sunlight for 4 h, significant values of 4.7 and 3.7 mmol⋅g-1⋅h-1 were achieved for hydrogen production and pyruvic acid formation, respectively, exceeding CdS alone by 3.29 and 4.02-fold, while the selectivity of pyruvic acid was 95.68 %. Furthermore, the S-Scheme electron transport mechanism in the composites was elucidated using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, radical trapping experiments, energy band structure analysis, and the identification of critical intermediates in the process of selective oxidation. This work sheds light on the design and preparation of high-performance photocatalysts for biorefining coupled with efficient hydrogen evolution.
Engineering Pt-Mn2O3 interface to boost selective oxidation of ethylene glycol to glycolic acid

Abstract:Rational design of desirable active sites is still a grand challenge for the efficient conversion of polyols to value-added products. Herein, we successfully constructed the Pt-Mn2O3 interfacial sites rather than Pt-MnOx solid solution to boost selective oxidation of ethylene glycol to glycolic acid under mild conditions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscope revealed that the pre-distribution of Mn2O3 inside support unexpectedly induced the formation of Pt-Mn2O3 interfacial active sites with strong electron coupling effect, leading to an unprecedented catalytic activity (turnover frequency: 3196.9 h−1) and glycolic acid yield (86.4 %). In addition, quantitative analysis of the intrinsic active sites was performed, and a “volcano-shape” relationship was established between initial reaction rate and Pt/Mn ratio. Moreover, the structure-dependent reaction kinetics and density functional theory calculation revealed that the synergistic effect between the Mn2O3 redox cycle and Pt promotes the adsorption of ethylene glycol and the activation of CH bond, resulting in the lower activation energy of ethylene glycol oxidation. The outcome of this work offers a promising avenue for the direct construction of efficient Pt-based catalysts with desired active sites.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA), one of the products of biomass conversion and CO2 reduction, has attracted much attention as a renewable liquid hydrogen carrier with a high hydrogen content (4.4 wt%). Searching for efficient catalysts to realize hydrogen evolution from FA are highly desired but challenging. Herein, ultrafine and mono-dispersed Pd-Cr(OH)3 nanoparticles (1.3 nm) loaded on amine-functionalized mesoporous silica (AFMS) have been prepared and applied as an effective catalyst for rapid hydrogen production from additive-free FA. The as-synthesized Pd-Cr(OH)3/AFMS catalysts exhibited efficient catalytic activity and 100% hydrogen selectivity and conversion toward FA dehydrogenation reaction without additives, giving an initial TOF value of 3112 h-1 at 323 K, which is comparable to most of the highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts reported so far under similar reaction conditions. This work provides a feasible idea for the design metal hydroxide-modified Pd-based efficient heterogeneous catalyst, which is expected to enhance the application of FA in fuel cells.

Abstract:Succinic acid is an important biomass-derived C4 building block and is ready to be converted into various value-added chemicals. Here we report that tunable selectivity for the formation of 1,4-butanediol, gamma-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran from aqueous succinic acid hydrogenation could be achieved on FeOx-promoted Pd/C catalysts. Fe was found to be an efficient promoter for the succinic acid hydrogenation, which not only improved the activity of the catalysts but also tuned the product distribution. Succinic acid could be transformed into 1,4-butanediol with a yield of over 70% in the presence of the Pd5FeO(x)/C catalyst under the relatively mild conditions of 200 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2. The reaction pathway was also proposed according to the reaction and characterization results.

Abstract:The conversion of fructose, derived from biomass, into 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) offers a promising approach for reducing the carbon footprint and achieving high atom economy. However, effective regulation of this transformation to minimize side reactions remains a challenge. In this study, a biochar supported RuWCu catalyst was developed demonstrating high activity of converting fructose to 1,2-propanediol with a favorable yield of 48.1% under optimized reaction conditions of 4 MPa H2, 210 degrees C, and 3 h. The calcination temperature and reduction temperature affected the states of Ru, W, and Cu, which in turn affected the metal-acid sites. Optimal results were obtained with a calcination temperature of 400 degrees C and a reduction temperature of 300 degrees C, resulting in a high yield of 1,2-PDO. The Ru0.5W36Cu7/biochar showed a good reuse potential with negligible activity loss after the fifth run. These findings contribute to the development of efficient catalysts for biomass conversion and highlight the potential of biochar-supported catalysts in sustainable chemical transformations. A pomelo peel-derived biochar supported RuWCu catalyst was synthesized for the production of 1,2-propanediol from fructose hydrodeoxygenation.

Abstract:Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO 2 (CO 2 -ODP) represents a promising pathway of propylene production and CO 2 utilization. Presently, vanadium (V) based catalysts are commonly used due to the excellent redox ability originated from the multivalent V. However, the CO 2 -ODP reaction mechanism remains elusive, limiting the rational design of highly efficient catalytic systems. Herein, we introduced Fe into impregnated V-Al 2 O 3 to build a dual-sites catalyst including Fe and V, achieving a C 3 H 8 conversion at ∼43 % and C 3 H 6 selectivity exceed 80 %. Via regulating the Fe/V molar ratio, we clearly describe that the formation of unique Fe-O-V facilitated the CO 2 dissociation. Intrinsically, V is the main active site contributing for C 3 H 8 dehydrogenation while Fe site is responsible for the CO 2 dissociation, replenishing lattice oxygen to enhance oxidative dehydrogenation of C 3 H 8 . The design of dual-sites catalyst and extraction of molecular understanding provide guidance for the rational development of highly active CO 2 -ODP catalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical oxidative lignin cleavage and coupled 2‐furaldehyde reduction provide a promising approach for producing high‐value added products. However, developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts with noble metal‐like activity still remains a challenge. Here, we report an efficient electrochemical strategy for the selective oxidative cleavage of Cα‐Cβ bonds in lignin into aromatic monomers by tailoring the electronic structure through P‐doped CoMoO4 spinels (99% conversion, highest monomer selectivity of 56%). Additionally, the conversion and selectivity of 2‐furaldehyde reduction to 2‐methyl furan reached 87% and 73%, respectively. The in situ Fourier transform infrared and density functional theory analysis revealed that an upward shift of the Ed upon P‐doping led to an increase in the antibonding level, which facilitated the Cα‐Cβ adsorption of the lignin model compounds, thereby enhancing the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of the active site. This work explored the potential of a spinel as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the oxidative cracking of lignin and the reductive conversion of small organic molecules to high‐value added chemicals via P anion modulation. Diluted Oxygen Realizes High Productivity of 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid under Ambient Temperature

Abstract:The oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) into 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a favorable reaction since FDCA is an ideal alternative to petroleum-based monomer terephthalic acid in bio-based polyester industry. However, producing FDCA with high yield under mild conditions is still challenging, especially at energy-saving near-ambient temperatures. Here, we present a Pd nanoparticles catalyst supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon (Pd/VC) that can completely convert HMF and achieve an encouraging FDCA yield (92.4%) at 30°C. The most important observations include yield declines at pure oxygen bubbling, and the transformation of intermediates becomes stagnant; instead, switching to the diluted oxygen is effectively driving the tandem oxidation as the over-oxidation, and thus, rapid deactivation of the Pd surface could be alleviated. The negative effect of high oxygen concentration also occurs in the dehydrogenation and oxygenation of an extended substrate. Since the decisive influence of oxygen content has often been neglected in past investigations of oxidative transformation over Pd-based catalysts, the current study may offer a critical reminder for other liquid-phase oxidation reactions.

Abstract:In the reaction of oxidizing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), attaining high efficiency and selectivity in the conversion of HMF into DFF presents a challenge due to the possibility of forming multiple products. Polyoxometalates are considered highly active catalysts for HMF oxidation. However, the over-oxidation of products poses a challenge, leading to decreased purity and yield. In this work, metal-organic framework-derived Fe3O4/C and Co3O4/C were designed as carriers for the vanadium-substituted Keggin-type polyoxomolybdate H5PMo10V2O40·35H2O (PMo10V2). In this complex system, spinel oxides can effectively adsorb HMF molecules and cooperate with PMo10V2 to catalyze the aerobic oxidation of HMF. As a result, the as-prepared PMo10V2@Fe3O4/C and PMo10V2@Co3O4/C catalysts can achieve efficient conversion of HMF into DFF with almost 100% selectivity. Among them, PMo10V2@Fe3O4/C exhibits a higher conversion rate (99.1%) under milder reaction conditions (oxygen pressure of 0.8 MPa). Both catalysts exhibited exceptional stability and retained their activity and selectivity even after undergoing multiple cycles. Studies on mechanisms by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the V5+ and Mo6+ in PMo10V2, together with the metal ions in the spinel oxides, act as active centers for the catalytic conversion of HMF. Therefore, it is proposed that PMo10V2 and M3O4/C (M = Fe, Co) cooperatively catalyze the transformation of HMF into DFF via a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism. This study offers an innovative approach for designing highly selective and recyclable biomass oxidation catalysts.

Abstract:In this work, we developed a novel binary phosphate catalyst FeCuPO x for the one-pot synthesis of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) from fructose. Under typical reaction conditions, 95% yield of DFF was achieved with a high TOF of 818 h–1. The experiment results and catalyst characterization together indicated that both the Brønsted–Lewis acid sites (B–L) and the Fe–Cu active sites contributed to the high synthetic activity of the catalysts. The effect of acid site demonstrated that the Brønsted acid sites facilitated the conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and the Lewis acid sites promoted the adsorption of the hydroxyl group over the catalytic active centers for further efficient oxidation of HMF to DFF. In the oxidation process, a higher lattice oxygen ratio and better mobility endowed FeCuPO x with better catalytic performance in the oxidation of HMF to DFF with the redox cycle of Fe3+/Fe2+, improved by the redox cycle of Cu2+/Cu+. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited satisfying stability and recyclability, demonstrating great potential for the industrial production of DFF from fructose.

Abstract:The biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation holds great significance for the sustainable production of value-added chemicals. However, the construction of active species with efficient oxidative-activity of alcohol/aldehyde still faces a great challenge. In this work, the reconstruction of CuO/Ni MOF successfully implanted CuOOH/NiOOH and deeply clarified their catalytic mechanism for HMF oxidation. It is worth noting that CuOOH/NiOOH exhibited an excellent self-healing ability during HMF oxidation, further realizing the reproducibility and long-term stability of catalyst. Moreover, a two-chamber electrocatalytic system combining HMF oxidation with 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation was established based on the activated CuO/Ni MOF. As a result, the overall reaction achieved a current density of 47.6 mA/cm 2 at 0.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 h), and the corresponding conversion rate and Faraday efficiency reached nearly 100%. This study provides new insight into the electrocatalytic-reconstruction strategy to implant active species for alcohol/aldehyde oxidation.

Abstract:A cost-effective and sustainable noble-metal free catalyst system based on ubiquitously available Mn-Cu bimetallic oxides was served as efficient catalysts for furfural selective oxidation to furancarboxylic acid (FA). Interestingly, Mn2Cu1Ox exhibited an excellent furfural conversion of 99% with quantitative selectivity toward FA. Especially, we demonstrate the significant weakening of the Mn−O bonds with the incorporation of CuO into the Mn−Cu oxides, resulting in an improved OL reactivity of Mn2Cu1Ox, which brings about a higher catalytic activity for furfural oxidation. More importantly, Mn2Cu1Ox could exhibit YFA>90% over 5 cycles of reusability test. Through this study, the relationship between the morphology, surface chemistry, and catalytic activity of Mn-Cu bimetallic oxides are elucidated, providing a simple and environmentally friendly catalytic strategy and scientific basis for the development of Mn-Cu bimetallic oxides bioderived molecular aerobic oxidation materials.
