Abstract:Propionic acid obtained from fermentation-derived lactic acid has been appreciated since propionic acid is mainly used as a food preservative, satisfying a natural food idea. Vapor-phase deoxygenation of lactic acid to biopropionic acid over dispersant-dispersed molybdenum oxides was investigated in this work. It was found that different dispersants displayed different performances, and the N element in dispersants had a positive effect. MoO3 was soon reduced to MoO2 under the in situ hydrogen atmosphere, and the latter played an important role in catalytic conversion of lactic acid to propionic acid. The discriminating experiments revealed that propionic acid was formed mainly through direct deoxygenation of lactic acid (main path) and not hydrogenation of acrylic acid as an intermediate (minor path). Furthermore, only in situ hydrogen was efficient, and external hydrogen was hardly efficient during catalytic reaction. Abstract:The disclosure of structure-dependent activity is always of great significance to rationalize the design of catalyst for achieving an excellent catalytic performance. Three clearly shaped and structured α-Fe 2 O 3 crystallites (nano-truncated hexagonal bipyramids (THB), nano-cubes (QC) and nano-spheres (RC)) were used as precursors to successfully synthesize their counterparts of three Fe 3 O 4 nano-crystallites, marked as THB-R, QC-R and RC-R, respectively, which remained consistent in shape. HRTEM images reveal that the three as-synthesized Fe 3 O 4 nano-crystallites expose different facets, in which (311) plane is exclusively exposed in RC-R, and the mixed planes of (111) and (222) are exposed in THB-R and QC-R. DFT calculations reveal that the Fe site located at the exposed (311) plane is more preferential to selectively adsorb α‐hydroxyl group (α-C-OH) in lactic acid (LA) molecule than the other two exposed planes of (111) and (222) on basis of adsorption energy of LA molecule, leading to a high activity on C O cleavage. The thermoanalysis of sample further indicates that the Fe site in RC-R is covered with less organic polymer or coke, than QC-R and THB-R, endowing an excellent activity and stability during the catalytic reaction. At 380 °C and LA LHSV of 16 h −1 under the inert atmosphere, the catalyst offered a satisfactory propionic acid selectivity of nearly 70%, and its catalytic performance hardly decayed within 34 h on stream.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient, low-cost supported catalysts is crucial for directly deoxygenating biomass fatty acids to long-chain olefins. However, additive-free olefin production, by dehydrative decarbonylation from fatty acids, is scarcely conducted owing to competing decarboxylation reactions. Herein, a green and cost-effective strategy is presented to improve the Co-catalyzed dehydrative decarbonylation of stearic acid, which produces a mixture of heptadecenes with yields of up to 41.3 % and a paraffin yield of 14.7 %. Experimental data, along with a detailed catalyst characterization, revealed that the surface CoNx species acted as the dominant active sites. Furthermore, the specific catalytic performance can be attributed to the dense defect sites, abundant vacancies, and mesoporous structures of the N-doped Carbon (NC) support. The as-prepared CoNx/NC catalysts were recovered and reused up to three times without significant deactivation. Additionally, we propose a possible reaction mechanism for fatty acid deoxygenation. This research makes a significant contribution toward advancing the performance of noble-metal-free deoxygenation catalysts for the production of unsaturated compounds in biomass conversions.
Epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide catalyzed by μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins

Abstract:Epoxidation of propylene to make propylene oxide catalyzed by μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins is investigated.The results indicate that the reaction temperature,reaction time,molar ratio of acraldehyde to propylene,and concentration and type of catalysts have significant effects on the reaction.The appropriate reaction conditions are as follows:100℃,1.5 h,500 rpm for stirring velocity,n (acraldehyde) ∶n (propylene)=0.625,catalyst concentration at 9.72×10-5mol％.The central metal and substituent group ofμ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins also have influence on catalytic activity.The catalytic activity order of different substituent group of μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins are —OCH3 ＞—H＞—F.With different central metal,the catalytic activity order are Fe＞Cu.Of which the best catalytic result is given by [T(p-OCH3) PPFe] 2 O,with the yield,selectivity and conversion rate being 27.31％,93.95％ and 29.06％ respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Redox catalysts play a vital role in chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation processes, which have recently been considered to be a promising prospect for propylene production. This work describes the coupling of surface acid catalysis and selective oxidation from lattice oxygen over MoO 3 -Fe 2 O 3 redox catalysts for promoted propylene production. Atomically dispersed Mo species over γ-Fe 2 O 3 introduce effective acid sites for the promotion of propane conversion. In addition, Mo could also regulate the lattice oxygen activity, which makes the oxygen species from the reduction of γ-Fe 2 O 3 to Fe 3 O 4 contribute to selectively oxidative dehydrogenation instead of over-oxidation in pristine γ-Fe 2 O 3 . The enhanced surface acidity, coupled with proper lattice oxygen activity, leads to a higher surface reaction rate and moderate oxygen diffusion rate. Consequently, this coupling strategy achieves a robust performance with 49% of propane conversion and 90% of propylene selectivity for at least 300 redox cycles and ultimately demonstrates a potential design strategy for more advanced redox catalysts.

Abstract:Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO 2 (CO 2 -ODP) represents a promising pathway of propylene production and CO 2 utilization. Presently, vanadium (V) based catalysts are commonly used due to the excellent redox ability originated from the multivalent V. However, the CO 2 -ODP reaction mechanism remains elusive, limiting the rational design of highly efficient catalytic systems. Herein, we introduced Fe into impregnated V-Al 2 O 3 to build a dual-sites catalyst including Fe and V, achieving a C 3 H 8 conversion at ∼43 % and C 3 H 6 selectivity exceed 80 %. Via regulating the Fe/V molar ratio, we clearly describe that the formation of unique Fe-O-V facilitated the CO 2 dissociation. Intrinsically, V is the main active site contributing for C 3 H 8 dehydrogenation while Fe site is responsible for the CO 2 dissociation, replenishing lattice oxygen to enhance oxidative dehydrogenation of C 3 H 8 . The design of dual-sites catalyst and extraction of molecular understanding provide guidance for the rational development of highly active CO 2 -ODP catalysts.

Abstract:Ferric molybdate nanotubes(FeMo-nt) with hollow structure were prepared based on Kirkendall effect and then modified with various additives. The physicochemical properties of the modified FeMo-nt and their catalysis in propene oxidation were studied. The results showed that there were Mo species enrichment on the FeMo-nt surface and a special interaction between the Mo and Fe species in the FeMo-nt catalysts. The modified FeMo-nt catalysts exhibited better catalytic performance in the propene oxidation by air than that of FeMo-nt and the product composition could be selectively controlled by using the catalysts modified with different additives. Moreover, the FeMo-nt catalysts modified with aminopropyl triethoxy silane(APS) can effectively inhibit the formation of CO x in the oxidation products, which leads to the obvious increase of the yields of valuable propene derivatives, such as acrolein and acrylic acid.

Abstract:Direct catalytic conversion of methane under mild conditions is beneficial but challenging. Herein, we report a direct co-conversion of methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen peroxide into acetic acid, catalyzed by Fe/ZSM-5 (0.25) zeolite under mild conditions. The highest reported acetic acid space-time yield of ∼12.01 mmol g cat −1 h −1 with an optimal selectivity of 63.2% is achieved at 50 °C. This relatively high yield is ascribed to the mononuclear Fe 3+ species. 13 C-Tracking experiments revealed that the methyl and carbonyl groups of acetic acid originate from methane and carbon monoxide, respectively. Spin-trapping experiments indicated that ∙OH and ∙CH 3 radicals are involved in the reaction. In situ Raman analysis suggested that –Fe–OCH 3 species is the possible intermediate. Overall, our method is greener, and our catalyst is more economical than those currently used in the industrial process. Therefore, we expect a pilot-scale test to determine the possibility as an industrial alternative.

Abstract:Currently, catalytic processing of biorenewable raw materials into valuable products attracts more and more attention. In the present work, silica-supported FePO4 and Fe-Mo-O catalysts are prepared, their phase composition, and catalytic properties are studied in the process of selective oxidation of propylene glycol into valuable mono- and bicarbonyl compounds, namely, hydroxyacetone and methylglyoxal. A comparative analysis of the main routes of propylene glycol adsorption with its subsequent oxidative conversion into carbonyl products is carried out. The DFT calculations show that in the presence of adsorbed oxygen atom, the introduction of the phosphate moiety to the Fe-containing site strengthens the alcohol adsorption on the catalyst surface with the formation of the 1,2-propanedioxy (–OCH(CH3)CH2O–) intermediate at the active site. The introduction of the molybdenum moiety to the Fe-containing site in the presence of the adsorbed oxygen atom is also energetically favorable, however, the interaction energy is found by 100 kJ/mol higher compared to the case with phosphate moiety that leads to an increase in the propylene glycol conversion while maintaining high selectivity towards C3 products. The catalytic properties of the synthesized iron-containing catalysts are experimentally compared with those of Ag/SiO2 sample. The synthesized FePO4/SiO2 and Fe-Mo-O/SiO2 catalysts are not inferior to the silver-containing catalyst and provide ~70% selectivity towards C3 products, while the main part of propylene glycol is converted into methylglyoxal in contrast to the Ag/SiO2 catalyst featuring the selective transformation of only the secondary C-OH group in the substrate molecule under the studied conditions with the formation of hydroxyacetone. Thus, supported Fe-Mo-O/SiO2 catalysts are promising for the selective oxidation of polyatomic alcohols under low-temperature conditions.

Abstract:Direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH) to propylene is a desirable commercial reaction but is highly endothermic and severely limited by thermodynamic equilibrium. Routes that oxidatively remove hydrogen as water have safety and cost challenges. We coupled chemical looping-selective hydrogen (H2) combustion and PDH with multifunctional ferric vanadate-vanadium oxide (FeVO4-VOx) redox catalysts. Well-dispersed VOx supported on aluminum oxide (Al2O3) provides dehydrogenation sites, and adjacent nanoscale FeVO4 acts as an oxygen carrier for subsequent H2 combustion. We achieved an integral performance of 81.3% propylene selectivity at 42.7% propane conversion at 550°C for 200 chemical looping cycles for the reoxidization of FeVO4. Based on catalytic experiments, spectroscopic characterization, and theory calculations, we propose a hydrogen spillover-mediated coupling mechanism. The hydrogen species generated at the VOx sites migrated to adjacent FeVO4 for combustion, which shifted PDH toward propylene. This mechanism is favored by the proximity between the dehydrogenation and combustion sites.

Abstract:The surface properties that determine the selectivity of Mo2C catalysts in ethane oxidative dehydrogenation with CO2 as a soft oxidant were investigated using a combination of pulse experiments and in-situ spectroscopic methods. Oxygen modification was discovered to be crucial for inhibiting the cleavage of the C-C bond in ethane and enhancing the production of ethylene. The addition of the Fe promoter accelerated the formation of surface oxygen species and stabilized them from reduction by ethane, leading to a shorter induction period, higher ethylene yield, and improved stability.

Abstract:Lactic acid is an important organic acid with wide applications, and preparation of lactic acid from biomass-derived 1,2-propanediol was consider as a green reaction route. In this paper, Cu modified Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst was designed for the oxidative esterification of 1,2-propanediol to methyl lactate in an alkali-free methanol system. The structural properties of Au-Cu/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst were characterized by various characterization methods, and an interaction between Au nanoparticles and Cu species was discovered. Moreover, the catalytic tests showed that the Cu modified Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts exhibited higher methyl lactate selectivity than that of the monometallic Au/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst. It was revealed that the synergistic effect between the Au nanoparticles and Cu species could promote the oxidation of primary hydroxyl groups of 1,2-propanediol to produce methyl lactate and reduce the generation of by-products. In addition, a reasonable reaction pathway for the oxidative esterification of 1,2-propanediol was proposed based on the comparative experiments. These findings may provide favorable guidance for design of Au based nanocatalysts for the oxidative esterification of alcohols to esters and carboxylic acid.

Abstract:Succinic acid is an important biomass-derived C4 building block and is ready to be converted into various value-added chemicals. Here we report that tunable selectivity for the formation of 1,4-butanediol, gamma-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran from aqueous succinic acid hydrogenation could be achieved on FeOx-promoted Pd/C catalysts. Fe was found to be an efficient promoter for the succinic acid hydrogenation, which not only improved the activity of the catalysts but also tuned the product distribution. Succinic acid could be transformed into 1,4-butanediol with a yield of over 70% in the presence of the Pd5FeO(x)/C catalyst under the relatively mild conditions of 200 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2. The reaction pathway was also proposed according to the reaction and characterization results.

Abstract:A new non-fermentative process for the transformation of biomass carbohydrates and lactic acid (LA) into propionic acid (PA) was first reported over a cobalt catalyst in water. The Co catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity for the formation of PA with Zn as a reductant. Various parameters, such as catalyst loading, Zn weight, water volume, temperature and reaction time, were investigated to improve the yield of PA, and the maximum value of 58.8% was achieved in the presence of 4 mmol Co and 10 mmol Zn in 7.5 mL H2O at 250 °C for 2 h. The recyclability of the Co catalyst showed that Co could be effectively repeated four times without the loss of activity. Moreover, the result showed that in situ-formed ZnO by oxidation of Zn in water could efficiently enhance the catalytic activity of the Co catalyst in the conversion of LA. Besides, direct conversion of carbohydrate biomass, such as glucose, cellulose and starch, or a similar compound such as glycolic acid also afforded the desired products. The present study provides great significance for practical application on the production of PA from LA and biomass carbohydrates.
MOF-Derived Co3O4 Nanoparticles Catalyzing Hydrothermal Deoxygenation of Fatty Acids for Alkane Production

Abstract:Designing economical and nonprecious catalysts with a catalytic performance as good as that of noble metals is of great importance in future renewable bioenergy production. In this study, the metal-organic framework (MOF) was applied as a precursor template to synthesize Co3O4 nanoparticles with a carbon matrix shell (denoted as M-Co3O4). To select the synthesized optimal catalyst, stearic acid was chosen as the model reactant. The effects of catalyst dosage, methanol dosage, water dosage, temperature, and reaction time on catalytic efficiency were examined. Under the designed condition, M-Co3O4 exhibited high catalytic performance and the catalyst showed higher conversion of stearic acid (98.7%) and selectivity toward C8-C18 alkanes (92.2%) in comparison with Pt/C (95.8% conversion and 93.2% selectivity toward C8-C18). Furthermore, a series of characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption isotherms (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was applied to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. Finally, we proposed that decarbonization (deCO) could be the presumably mechanistic pathway for the production of C8-C18 alkanes from the decomposition of stearic acid.

Abstract:Fe-based oxygen carries (OCs) have attracted wide attention due to the low cost and environmental compatibility for chemical looping methane partial oxidation. However, they usually suffer from low CH4 reactivity mainly due to insufficient synergy between catalytic CH4 activation and lattice oxygen mobility. In this work, Fe ions with different amount were incorporated into a novel garnet structure (Y3FexAl5-xO12), which exhibited drastically increased CH4 conversion with reduction time. This resulted from in-situ formed Fe0 sites at the early stage of reduction, which led to a more efficient reaction route involving methane catalytic decomposition on Fe0 and the resulted carbon oxidation easier by lattice oxygen, compared with methane directly oxidized by OCs. Moreover, the amount of Fe ions in garnet influenced surface exposed Fe0 sites and oxygen mobility, inducing Y3Fe2Al3O12 performed the best with almost 94 % methane conversion thanks to the combined advantages of larger surface exposed Fe0 and higher lattice oxygen mobility.

Abstract:Oxygen chemistry plays a pivotal role in numerous chemical reactions. In particular, selective cleavage of C-H bonds by metal oxo species is highly desirable in dehydrogenation of light alkanes. However, high selectivity of alkene is usually hampered through consecutive oxygenation reactions in a conventional oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) scheme. Herein, we show that dual-functional Mo-V-O mixed oxides selectively convert propane to propylene via an alternative chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) approach. At 500 degrees C, we obtain 89% propylene selectivity at 36% propane conversion over 100 dehydrogenation-regeneration cycles. We attribute such high propylene yield-which exceeds that of previously reported ODH catalysts-to the involvement and precise modulation of bulk lattice oxygen via atomic-scale doping of Mo and show that increasing the binding energy of V-O bonds is critical to enhance the selectivity of propylene. This work provides the fundamental understanding of metal-oxygen chemistry and a promising strategy for alkane dehydrogenation.
