Abstract:The interfacial interaction of Mo species with the HBeta zeolite was studied by multinuclear MAS NMR, XRD and N2 adsorption. As proved by the quantitative 27Al MAS NMR, this interaction is so strong as to dealuminate the framework of HBeta, and leads to a new peak appearing at −14ppm, which indicates the formation of crystalline Al2(MoO4)3. This can also be detected by XRD measurements when the Mo loading is as high as 9.0wt.%. The corresponding quantitative 29Si and 1H MAS NMR spectra show that the amount of silanols and Brønsted acidic sites decrease obviously with increasing Mo loading. This also reveals an interaction between Mo species and HBeta support through an oxygen bridge resulting from condensation with the hydroxyls on the support. At higher Mo loadings, the interaction is so strong that it results in an extraction of aluminum from the zeolite framework, and subsequently appearance of Al2(MoO4)3 and loss of Brønsted acidic sites. These can be correlated to the low catalytic activity of Mo/HBeta in metathesis of ethylene and 2-butylene to propylene.
Effects of post treatment of HZSM-5 zeolites on catalytic cracking of butene

Abstract:The structure and acidity of HZSM-5 zeolites were modified using different post treatment methods: alkaline treatment, steam treatment, and alkaline-steaming treatment. The catalytic performances of modified zeolites were tested in 1-butene catalytic cracking. Their physicochemical properties were characterized by N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and infrared spectroscopy with pyridine adsorption (Py-IR). The acidities of zeolites increased after the alkaline treatment, and as a result, the activity of butene cracking increased and the selectivity of propylene decreased. However, the deactivation rate of alkaline-treated zeolites had no significant change. There was a pronounced development of mesopores (5—20 nm) with a broad pore-size distribution in alkaline-treated ZSM-5 zeolites. Mesopores (2—4 nm) with a narrow distribution is observed after steaming treatment, while the mesopore volume is low. Zeolites after alkaline- and steaming-treatment showed two kinds of mesopore distributions, 2—4 nm (narrow) and 5—20 nm (broad). Due to the decrease of Br?nsted acidic sites, the selectivity of propylene increased over ZSM-5 zeolites with any of the post treatments; a relatively stable propylene yield was obtained after the reaction of 2.5 h (except for zeolites treated with high concentration of alkaline followed by steaming treatment).

Abstract:Bifunctional composite catalysts Zr/H[Zn](x)Z with different Zn contents were prepared by combining the impregnation and physical mixing method. The effect of zinc species on two active sites in bifunctional composite catalysts Zr/ H[Zn]ZSM-S for alkylation of benzene with syngas has been investigated. The results indicated that the introduction of Zn greatly improves the catalytic performance and the selectivity of target products and changed with the change of Zn content. The sample Zr/H[Zn](3)Z exhibited the highest total selectivity of toluene and xylene of 91% and the benzene conversion of 18% at 400 degrees C under 3.3 MPa; nevertheless, the sample Zr/H[Zn](5)Z showed the highest benzene conversion and xylene selectivity, which reached 31 and 27%, respectively. The acidic properties and state of Zn species of H[Zn](x)Z zeolites have been explored. All evidence suggested that most of Zn introduced into HZ zeolite existed in the catalyst as Zn(OH)(+), forming new Zn-Lewis acid at the expense of Bronsted acid. The Zn species plays a role in three aspects in the alkylation reaction between benzene and syngas. First, the Zn species can provide H species for ZrO2 activation of CO by promoting H-2 activation, thus generating more methanol; second, Zn(OH)(+) species formed in zeolite can inhibit the side reactions of methanol so as to promote the alkylation of benzene and methanol; finally, the Zn-Lewis acidic sites can inhibit the cracking reaction of C-6(+) olefins and further promote the dehydrogenation aromatization reaction.

Abstract:HZSM-5 zelolites with different Si/Al ratios(25,38,50),nano-scale HZSM-5,and the modified HZSM-5 were used in the synthesis of ethylbenzene by the alkylation of benzene with ethanol.And the activity,selectivity and desulphurization effect of the zeolites were studied.The results show that the lower the Si/Al ratio the higher the activity,and the better the desulphurization effect.The nano-scale HZSM-5 and B-HZSM-5 have higher activity,selectivity and longer operation life.

Abstract:Y type zeolite modified by Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, La3+ and NH+ 4 ions had proper surface acidity for alkylation reaction. It could replace HF as a solid acid catalyst used in alkylation reaction of benzene with long straight chain monoolefines. It was proved by TPD spectra of fresh and used catalysts with n-butylamine as probe moleccules that there were two kinds of acid with different strength on surface of zeolites. The desorption temperatures of two kinds of acid were at 300°C and 450°C- Two desorption peak areas of used catalyst were less than that of fresh catalyst. The peak area at 450°C decreased even much more than that at 300°C. The spectra of pyridine adsorption FT-IR indicated that Lewis acid and Brönsted acid coexisted on surface of catalysts, there was a good correspondence relation between reaction activity of alkylation reaction and amounts of acid sites with middle strength, the reaction activity was independent to the type of surface acids.

Abstract:The inferior catalytic stability of zeolite catalysts for the reactions involving large-size reactants is the main obstacle for their industrial utilization. Considering the catalytic performances of zeolite catalyzed reactions are highly correlated with their structure and acid properties. Herein, Beta/MCM-41 micro‐meso composites were constructed by varying the alkali concentration and surfactant template size, attempting to build a correlation between the catalytic performance and catalyst physical properties. A series of characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, NMR, TG, etc., were adopted to reveal the physical properties of the synthesized catalysts. It's demonstrated that suitable alternation of the synthesis conditions could significantly enhance the catalytic performance of the micro‐meso composites in comparison with the parent Beta for the alkylation of benzene with 1-dodecene, wherein the excellent combination of the structure and acid properties was regarded as the main reason for the enhanced performance. Besides, surfactant templates with different sizes were also proved to be appliable to this method. In addition, an indexed alkylation factor was proposed to correlate the catalyst physical properties with the catalytic performances. This factor was further proved to own good prediction and can provide significant guidance for the choice or design of new micro‐meso composite materials.

Abstract:The effects of fluorination on Hβ zeolite and alkylation of benzene with long-chain olefins catalyzed by fluorinated β zeolite are investigated. The lifetime of the catalysts depends on the surface area and pore volume rather than acidity. When the fluorine content is 0.5%, the lifetime improves by 30%, when the catalyst has maximum specific surface area and pore volume.

Abstract:The effect of molybdenum content on the structure and performance of Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts in olefin metathesis was examined. The optimal performance was obtained with a catalyst of 4-6 wt % Mo on a composite support of 70% H beta zeolite and 30% Al2O3. The interfacial interaction between the Mo species and the H beta-Al2O3 composite support was carefully studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy. XRD and N-2 adsorption results indicate that some interactions may occur between the Mo species and the composite support during the sample preparation. Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra show that this kind of interaction becomes more severe and leads to the dealumination of the framework and subsequent appearance of aluminum molybdate with increasing Mo loadings. Two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR spectra further demonstrate that the framework Al on H beta zeolite at the specific T sites could be preferentially extracted upon Mo loading, which may result in the appropriate Bronsted acidity on the support as evidenced by the quantitative H-1 MAS NMR measurements. A moderate interaction of Mo species with the support and the proper acidity may be advantageous for the cross-metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene over heterogeneous catalysts.
The Role of Alumina in the Supported Mo/HBeta–Al2O3 Catalyst for Olefin Metathesis: A High-Resolution Solid-State NMR and Electron Microscopy Study

Abstract:High-resolution solid-state MAS NMR; hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR, SEM, and TEM; XRD; and N2 adsorption were used to investigate the role of alumina in the Mo/HBeta–Al2O3 catalyst. XRD and N2 adsorption showed that introduction of alumina into the support may protect the HBeta framework from destruction. Quantitative 29Si MAS, 27Al MAS, and MQ MAS NMR spectra demonstrated that dealumination occurs preferentially at specific T-sites in the Mo/HBeta catalyst; however, the framework aluminum in HBeta zeolites remains at the same crystallographic sites after the addition of alumina. Hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR, HRTEM, and SEM images indicate that Mo species are readily dispersed in alumina rather than in HBeta zeolites. The preferential migration of Mo species into the alumina pores may preserve the integrity of the HBeta zeolite framework and result in the moderate distribution of Mo species and acidity in the composite support. These may be correlated with the high performance of Mo/HBeta–Al2O3 catalysts in the metathesis of ethene and butene-2 to propene.

Abstract:In the present work, the effect of oxides on the alkylation of benzene with 1-dodecene was comprehensively investigated over MCM-49 n-heptanol, n-heptaldehyde and n-heptanoic acid were selected as the model oxides herein, and obvious decrease of lifetime could be caused by only trace amount of oxides added in the feedstocks. However, the deactivated catalysts were difficult to be regenerated by extraction with hot benzene. Additionally, coke-burning was also proved to be incapable to regenerate the deactivated catalysts mainly for the dealumination during calcination. Further characterizations complementary with DFT calculations were conducted to demonstrate that the deactivation was mainly due to the firm adsorption of oxides on the acid sites.

Abstract:For the alkylation of benzene with long-chain olefins, Hβ-zeolite catalyst not only has the advantages of high selectivity to 2-phenyl isomers with no corrosive or environmental problems, but it also can be regenerated repeatedly. The characterization of the coke shows that the deactivation of catalysts is caused by a jam of bulkier molecules, such as naphthalene, indane and linear alkylbenzenes, which are too big to move quickly in the intracrystalline pores of the catalysts. These bulkier molecules deposit in intracrystalline pores and then in larger pores. The aromatic compounds in raw olefins must be removed because they can deactivate the catalyst quickly; the moisture in the reactants should be 20–30ppm. The deactivated catalyst can be regenerated by benzene washing at higher temperature. New species, such as alkylbenzene with short chains, naphthalene, indane, biphenyl, condensed ring compounds and unsaturated compounds, are formed by cracking and cyclization in the regeneration process.

Abstract:The acidity and pore structure of zeolite catalysts play a crucial role in the selectivity and stability of C4 alkylation due to the synergistic effect of reaction activity and diffusion. Herein, the effect of three acidic beta zeolites with different Si/Al ratios on adsorption, diffusion, and catalytic performance was studied using experiments and molecular simulations. The beta zeolite with the lower Si/Al ratio leads to the faster relative diffusion of isobutane to 1-butene and the smaller adsorption amount of alkylate products. Furthermore, the diffusion of molecules in the zigzag channel along the z direction of beta zeolites is much slower than other two directions. The experimental results indicate that lower Si/Al ratio cause the higher content of strong BAS in the zeolite, resulting in the higher hydride activity and the longer catalytic lifetime. This work provides a theoretical basis for the development of high catalytic activity zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:H-Beta zeolites with various Si/Al ratios have been prepared for the liquid-phase benzylation of various arenes with benzyl chloride (BzCI). Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectroscopy revealed the incorporation of Al into the silica framework to form catalytically active Bronsted acid sites (BAS). H-1 MAS NMR spectroscopy investigations demonstrated the BAS density increased with reducing Si/Al ratio, while the BAS strength decreased as probed by CD3CN molecules. These H-Beta zeolites are highly selective to desired monobenzylation products depending on the shape-selectivity induced by the suitable channel system. The catalytic performance is in line with the nudeophilicity and proton affinity (PA) of arenes (xylene > toluene > benzene) on the same catalyst, typically for Friedel-Crafts reaction. A shape-selective effect has been observed to dominate the reaction, lowering the performance of mesitylene compared to xylene, as well as being selective to only the monobenzylation product. The benzylation performance is enhanced with increasing the BAS strength of H-Beta zeolites due to the formation of more aryl cation intermediates by attacking electronegative chlorine atom in BzCl. An alternative reaction mechanism based on the activation of arenes by protonating aromatic ring of BAS is proposed to explain the superior benzylation activity of BzCI with less active arenes.

The influence of ratio of reaction agents on the conversion of dodecene and reaction temperature on selectivity of products was studied. A new liquid - solid circulating fluidized bed reactor (LSCFBR) was designed. The industrial feasibility for industrial benzene with industrial dodecene used in this new reactor was investigated.

Abstract:The effects of fluorination on β zeolite and alkylation of benzene with long-chain olefins were studied by XRD, BET measurements, FTIR, TPD, elemental analysis, and catalyst testing. When β zeolite was impregnated with low concentration HF solutions, the extra-lattice species were dissolved, bridging hydroxyl groups (3605/cm) were substituted by fluorine, and unstable lattice aluminum (3782/cm) was removed, so the specific area and pore volume increased and total amount of acid decreased gradually. With increasing HF concentration, decrease in strong Brönsted acid sites was less than that in weak Brönsted acid sites because the hydroxyl groups bonded to silica (3730 and 3745/cm) were more stable and strong. Lewis acid sites increased due to the formation of AlF3 or other fluorinated compounds. When both β zeolite and the extra-lattice species dissolved, the specific area and pore volume decreased. The lifetime of the catalysts depended on the surface area and pore volume instead of acidity. When the fluorine content was 0.5% and the catalyst was kept at maximum specific surface area and pore volume, the lifetime could be improved by 30%.

Abstract:Amphiphilic HZSM-5 zeolite particles with Si/Al ratios of 25, 42 and 101 were prepared by partial modification of the external surfaces of the HZSM-5 zeolite with trimethylchlorosilane. The amount of water added during the preparation influences the amphiphilic properties of the zeolites. The results of IR spectroscopy and N-2 adsorption indicate that these amphiphilic zeolite samples have the similar acidity and a little smaller surface area compared to their parent zeolites. In the phase-boundary reactions of cyclohexene hydration and isoamyl acetate hydrolysis, these amphiphilic zeolite particles are oriented at the aqueous-organic phase boundary and exhibit catalytic activity obviously superior to the parent zeolites. The amphiphilic HZSM-5 with a Si/Al ratio of 42 shows the best catalytic performance. Furthermore, the amphiphilic HZSM-5 is a more effective phase-boundary catalyst for the isoamyl acetate hydrolysis than for the cyclohexene hydration.

Deactivation of β-zeolite catalyst is due to blocking of the channels by bulkier molecules like aromatic and polyaromatic species, formed as a result of a series of alkylation. Abstract:As a typical reaction process catalyzed by acid sites, the alkylation of benzene with methanol significantly depends on the distribution of acid sites in zeolite. Herein, an MCM-22 zeolite with regulated acid sites and framework aluminum (AlF) siting was successfully synthesized by the insertion of boron. Proper boron incorporation can bring to a concentration of the Brønsted acid sites (BSites) in the 10–membered ring (10MR) sinusoidal channels, which provide a good shape-selective space for alkylation of benzene with methanol. Meanwhile, the decrease in BSites in the supercages and external pockets leads to an alleviation of the coking process and formation of ethylbenzene, enhancing the catalytic life and capacity of containing deposits.

Abstract:The alkylation of benzene with propylene over Hβ zeolite catalyst was studied by means of in situ FTIR and coke characterization. After the catalyst has been impregnated with benzene, propylene can replace adsorbed benzene and react with benzene. In the absence of excess benzene, adsorbed propylene will react with itself. Therefore, a higher molar ratio of benzene to propylene is indispensable. In addition, at higher temperature, propylene can more easily replace adsorbed benzene, so the reaction proceeds more quickly. For the process carried out in a fixed-bed bubble reactor where catalysts are impregnated in the bulk liquid of benzene, propylene oligomerization is suppressed. The coke deposited on the catalyst is composed of multi-substituent aromatic compounds which have single or double rings. The deactivation is caused from pore blockage of bulkier molecules formed by multi-alkylation instead of propylene oligomerization. With the increase of reaction temperature, the decomposition rate of products increases. The decomposition will form propylene and bulkier molecules, which will block the micropore channel of the catalyst and deactivate the catalyst. At higher temperature, however, bulkier molecules diffuse more quickly; this can prolong the lifetime of catalyst, so the reaction temperature could be too low. The suitable temperature should be 120–160°C.
