Abstract:Hydraulic system is widely used in mobile applications for its compact body, easy installation, and high power-to-mass ratio. Hydraulic manifolds on which many valves and measurement gauges can be installed are important parts in a hydraulic system. Traditional hydraulic manifold manufacturing leads to excessive volume and weight to form a flow passage and additional energy is also consumed in the passages. Nevertheless, the optimization of hydraulic manifolds is limited by manufacturing constraints. To reduce energy losses and mass, different traditional flow passages and the characters of fluid are investigated. The relation between energy losses and structure parameters is identified by means of simulations. It turns out that intersection types of passages especially sharp 90° bends between two passages have great influences on the pressure drop and energy losses, and the optimization method is also provided based on the simulation results. Additive manufacturing technology, more specifically, the selective laser melting (SLM) is adopted, because the traditional manifold manufacturing like forging, drilling and casting is difficult and even impossible to build the optimized manifold. Combing additive manufacturing technology with simulation optimization, pressure losses and energy consuming can reduce up to 50%, which contributes much to higher power-to-mass ratio.
