Abstract:In this study we proposed a device composed of dry electrode and dry adhesive medical patch for biopotentials measurement. The behavior of the dry adhesive with mushroom-shaped micropillars is characterized through normal and friction force test. The adhesion strength (~1.2 N/cm 2 ) is comparable to acrylic medical patch, and the repeating cycle testing result demonstrates that the adhesion strength of dry adhesive medical patch is larger than that of acrylic medical patch. Moreover, the dry adhesive medical patch does not cause skin to turn allergic owning to its biocompatibility. The proposed device also is used to record electrocardiogram (ECG) with dry electrode. Compared with conventional wet electrode, the signal quality is outstanding. The QRS-complex and T-wave of ECG are clearly legible.
Implantable Wet‐Adhesive Flexible Electronics with Ultrathin Gelatin Film

Abstract:Implantable flexible electronic has attracted significant research interest in various fields. However, it still faces the challenge of simultaneously achieving tight adhesion to tissues in a mildly wet environment and possessing excellent biocompatibility to reduce immune rejection reactions after implantation. Here, a degradable wet-adhesive flexible electronic device based on liquid metal and ultrathin gelatin film is developed. The ultrathin gelatin film forms numerous hydrogen bonds with tissue in a slightly humid environment, rapidly constructing a wet-adhesive interface without damaging tissue structure. Inkjet printing is utilized to pattern the mixture of liquid metal and PVP on the surface of the ultrathin gelatin to create flexible patch. With the excellent conductivity of liquid metal, low toxicity, and similarity to natural tissue components of gelatin, flexible patch exhibits outstanding biocompatibility and fatigue resistance. It can be implanted in the body for up to 6 weeks, retaining monitoring capabilities and resisting 1 000 000 cycles of bending fatigue. This study provides a novel strategy for the future development of implantable flexible electronics. Through the self-leveling and self-evaporative properties of gelatin solution, nano-scale flexible transparent films are obtained. Leveraging its adhesive properties with a mixture of liquid metal, wet-adhesive flexible electronic devices are fabricated, enabling rapid adhesion in moist environments in vivo and improving the accuracy and stability of implanted monitoring. image

Abstract:Simultaneous monitoring of electrophysiological and biochemical signals is of great importance in healthcare and fitness management, while the fabrication of highly integrated and flexible devices is crucial to these applications. Herein, we devised a multifunctional and flexible hydrogel-paper patch (HPP) that was capable of simultaneously real-time monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal and biochemical signal (glucose content) in sweat during exercise. The self-assembly of the highly porous PEDOT:PSS hydrogel on paper fiber provided the HPP with good conductivity and hydrophilic wettability for efficient electron transmission and substance diffusion, thereby enabling it to serve as a low-impedance ECG electrode and a highly sensitive glucose sensor. Additionally, the spontaneous capillary flow effect allows the paper patch to be used as microfluidic channels for the collect and analysis of sweat. Moreover, the HPP is integrated with a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) and works as a multifunctional wearable device mounted on the chest for real-time monitoring of electrophysiological and biochemical signals during exercise.

Abstract:Driven by the increased interest in wearable long-term healthcare monitoring systems, varieties of dry electrodes are proposed based on different materials with different patterns and structures. Most of the studies reported in the literature focus on proposing new electrodes and comparing its performance with commercial electrodes. Few papers are about detailed comparison among different dry electrodes. In this paper, printed metal-plate electrodes, textile based electrodes, and spiked electrodes are for the first time evaluated and compared under the same experimental setup. The contact impedance and noise characterization are measured. The in-vivo electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement is applied to evaluate the overall performance of different electrodes. Textile electrodes and printed electrodes gain comparable high-quality ECG signals. The ECG signal obtained by spiked electrodes is noisier. However, a clear ECG envelope can be observed and the signal quality can be easily improved by backend signal processing. The features of each type of electrodes are analyzed and the suitable application scenario is addressed.

Abstract:This paper presents a wearable biopatch prototype for body surface potential measurement. It combines three key technologies, including mixed-signal system on chip (SoC) technology, inkjet printing technology, and anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) bonding technology. An integral part of the biopatch is a low-power low-noise SoC. The SoC contains a tunable analog front end, a successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter, and a reconfigurable digital controller. The electrodes, interconnections, and interposer are implemented by inkjet-printing the silver ink precisely on a flexible substrate. The reliability of printed traces is evaluated by static bending tests. ACA is used to attach the SoC to the printed structures and form the flexible hybrid system. The biopatch prototype is light and thin with a physical size of 16 cm × 16 cm. Measurement results show that low-noise concurrent electrocardiogram signals from eight chest points have been successfully recorded using the implemented biopatch.

Abstract:Wearable devices for health monitoring like electrocardiography(ECG) use commercial Ag/AgCl electrodes to detect signals, but they can cause skin irrtation and lead unreliable data during prolonged usage. This work shows alternative ECG electrodes, we obtained these electrodes using Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogel and commercially flexible materials. 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) could increase the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and make the formation of hydrogel in commerically flexible materials at a short time. We validated the impedance and ECG signlas of these flexible electrodes, and found the optimized one(wound dressing) compared to commercial electrode and got the equivalent circuit model of it. Furthermore, we designed the ECG flexible printed circuit matching the optimized electrode to form a patch, and used the patch as wearable device to detect the ECG signals of volunteer in static condition and got the variation of heart rate value in dynamic condition. The interface impedance of our ECG electrode was small compared to commercial electrodes and the ECG signals were similar with them. The results of on-body testing shown our electrode with FPC could work as wearable devices for health monitoring in both static and dynamic conditions. These results suggest that our electrode could be alternated commercial electrode due to its high conductivity, biocompatibility, flexibility, recyclability and low price.

Abstract:Hydrogels with superior adhesion in both wet and dry interfaces, excellent biocompatibility, and electrical conductivity are highly essential for biomedical engineering and wearable electronics. Although a variety of artificial adhesives have been developed to enhance adhesion in a wet interface, a single adhesion strategy has limitations in complex adhesion environments. Inspired by the ortho-hexagonal toe pads of the tree frog, we present a microstructured hydrogel adhesive (MS-HAD) that combines chemical adhesive and perspiration wicking introduced by a biomimetic microstructure. This MS-HAD is made by a biocompatible PDA/PAM hydrogel featuring ortho-hexagonal micropillars on the surface. The PDA/PAM hydrogel composition was optimized, balancing the hydrogel adhesive and mechanical strength to match the micropillar fabrication process. By studying the adhesion behavior of micropillar structures of various sizes, it is found that the liquid self-splitting and liquid self-sucking introduced by the microstructure were the synergistic mechanism of adhesion strength enhancement in the wet interface. The adhesion of MS-HAD in the wet interface is enhanced by 47% in comparison to a flat hydrogel adhesive (F-HAD). Finally, the application of the MS-HAD patches for ECG signal monitoring under dry and wet skins is demonstrated. For both dry and wet skins, the ECG signal measured by the MS-HAD is more stable and accurate compared to those measured by commercial gel electrodes and F-HAD. The MS-HAD reported here provides a potential adhesive electrode that could perform well in both wet and dry interfaces for future portable health monitoring devices.

Abstract:Wearable devices offer a revolutionary approach to ambulatory electrocardiography (ECG) for cardiovascular disease diagnosis. Herein, an adhesive, highly stretchable and conformal (ASC) patch for long‐term ambulatory ECG monitoring is presented. The ASC patch is designed with a “three‐bridge” structure to provide inhomogeneous strain distribution during stretching. Meanwhile, the electrical stability is achieved by stretchable liquid metal interconnects at the domain experiencing larger strain. Moreover, the long‐term usability can be attained by an adhesive layer made of polydopamine/polyacrylamide glycerol–water hydrogel, maintaining good adhesiveness and stretchability for more than two weeks. Altogether, the patch can successfully measure stable high‐quality ECG signals in relaxed, stretched, or underwater conditions. Enhanced mechanical and electrical properties exhibited by our ASC patch confer superior skin‐device interface on either dry or wet conditions than that of current electrodes. The hydrogel‐based patch displays conformal deformation along with the stretched skin. This work provides a scalable prototype for multilead wearable ECG devices and promises new opportunities for medical applications in soft electronics. An adhesive, highly stretchable, and soft patch is developed for long‐term ambulatory electrocardiography (ECG) monitoring. Abstract:On-skin patches that record biopotential and biomechanical signals are essential for wearable healthcare monitoring, clinical treatment, and human-machine interaction. To acquire wearing comfort and high-quality signals, patches with tissue-like softness, elastic recovery, damage tolerance, and robust bioelectronic interface are highly desired yet challenging to achieve. Here, we report a dry epidermal patch made from a supramolecular polymer (SESA) and an in situ transferred carbon nanotubes' percolation network. The polymer possesses a hybrid structure of copolymerized permanent scaffold permeated by multiple dynamic interactions, which imparts a desired mechanical response transition from elastic recoil to energy dissipation with increased elongation. Such SESA-based patches are soft (Young's modulus similar to 0.1 MPa) and elastic within physiologically relevant strain levels (97% elastic recovery at 50% tensile strain), intrinsically mechanical-electrical damage-resilient (similar to 90% restoration from damage after 5 min), and interference-immune in dynamic signal acquisition (stretch, underwater, sweat). We demonstrate its versatile physiological sensing applications, including electrocardiogram recording under various disturbances, machine-learning-enabled hand-gesture recognition through electromyogram measurement, subtle radial artery pulse, and drastic knee kinematics sensing. This epidermal patch offers a promising noninvasive, long-duration, and ambulant bioelectronic with anti-interference robustness.
A Long-Term, Portable ECG Patch Monitor Based on Flexible Dry Electrode

Abstract:Abstract PurposeLong-term electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is an essential approach for the early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Flexible dry electrodes that contains electrolyte without water could be a potential substitution of wet electrodes for long-term ECG monitoring. Therefore, this paper developes a long-term, portable ECG patch based on flexible dry electrodes, namely SEUECG-100.MethodA device consists of analog-front-end acquisition, data acquisition, and storage modules is developed and tested. An impedance test was conducted to compare the skin-electrode impedance of the flexible dry electrode and the Ag/AgCl wet electrode. The ECG signals were simutanously collected from the same subject using the SEUECG-100 and Shimmer device , which were then compared and analyzed from the perspective of ECG morphology, RR interval, and signal quality indices (SQI).ResultsThe experimental results reveal that the flexible dry electrode has the characteristics of low skin-electrode impedance. SEUECG-100 could collect high-quality ECG signals. The ECG signals collected by the two devices have a high RR interval correlation (r=0.999). SQI results show that SEUECG-100 is better than the Shimmer device in overcoming baseline drift. Long-term ECG acquisition and storage experiments show that SEUECG-100 could collect ECG signals with good stability and high reliability.ConclusionThe implementation of the proposed system design with dry electrodes could can effectively record long-term ECG monitoring with high quality in comparison to systems with wet electrodes from both impedance characteristics and signal morphology aspects.

Abstract:In this study, polydimethyl-siloxane (PDMS) film with a mushroom-shaped micropillars array was formed as both a dry adhesive patch to fix an electrode on human body and a dielectric layer of a capacitive dry electrode to sense biopotentials. The adhesion strength of the PDMS film was analyzed by numerical calculation and experimental results. The results indicated that the adhesion strength was large enough to fix the electrode on skin. Furthermore, the durability testing result demonstrated that the PDMS film had adhesion strength stability. In addition, the PDMS film was more biocompatible than the acrylic medical patch. The experimental results of biopotentials measurement presented that the qualities of electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyogram (EMG) signals recorded by the capacitive dry electrode were comparable with those of the wet electrode (Ag/AgCl).
A Reusable, Healable, and Biocompatible PEDOT:PSS Hydrogel-Based Electrical Bioadhesive Interface for High-Resolution Electromyography Monitoring and Time–frequency Analysis

Abstract:As the most ideal interface between bioelectronic devices and biological tissues, the electrical bioadhesive interface (EBI) holds significant potential for various applications, including soft bioelectronics, wearable devices, and electrophysiological signal monitoring. However, most current EBIs are disposable products that lack repeatable adhesion and self-healing properties, thus hindering practical applications. Herein, we develop a reusable EBI by incorporating a dynamic non-covalent interaction enhancer polydopamine (PDA) and conductive PEDOT:PSS into an adhesive hydrogel matrix polyacrylamide (PAM). The EBI exhibits intriguing overall electrical and mechanical properties, including high conductivity (5.57 S m(-1)), tissue-like Young's modulus (2.7 kPa), low interfacial impedance (1 k Omega), and excellent adhesion strength (46.45 +/- 1.75 kPa on porcine skin) with excellent retention (87 %) after 200 adhering/detaching cycles, high self-healing efficiency of 94.11 %, and outstanding biocompatibility in HDF-a and HaCaT cell models. Benefiting from these superior properties, we further demonstrate the fabrication and application of an EBI-based reusable electromyography monitoring patch (EMP). The reusable EMP enables high-resolution electromyography signal monitoring capability with a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30.05 dB than commercial electrodes (12.06 dB). Remarkably, such reusable EMP maintains very stable SNR of 21.82 dB after 200 adhering/detaching cycles (3.8 times higher than commercial electrodes, 5.74 dB after 30 cycles), and showcases typical time and frequency-domain characteristics. These findings demonstrate a promising reusable EMP to enhance the accuracy and convenience of electromyography monitoring.

Abstract:Electromyography (EMG) monitoring has been extensively employed for critical applications in medicine, sports science, and rehabilitation. However, the mechanical mismatch between conventional EMG electrodes and the skin can lead to electrode detachment upon significant skin deformation. To address this limitation, we develop a PEDOT:PSS-based hydrogel electrical bioadhesive interface (EBI) that incorporates molecular doping and robust adhesion strategies to achieve excellent mechanical compatibility with biological tissues. This hydrogel EBI is fabricated using direct writing of printable inks followed by in-situ thermal initiation, enabling the creation of customizable patterns with high shape fidelity. The resultant 3D-printed PEDOT:PSS-based hydrogel EBI exhibits supersoft properties (Young's modulus 5-8.5 kPa), ultra-stretchability (1,175% strain), robust adhesion (>133 kPa), and outstanding electrochemical performance (CIC reduction by 0.45% over 100,000 cycles). Additionally, we further develop a PEDOT:PSS-based hydrogel electrode specifically for stable EMG signal recording. This electrode outperforms superior signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance compared to commercial electrodes in EMG monitoring.

Abstract:A wearable and semi-disposable electrocardiography (ECG) system is developed based on the self-adhesive ECG sensor patch, which can be fabricated by large area coating processes. The use of cobweb electrode and silicon adhesive film makes the sensor patch conformably contact the skin surface for low electrode-to-skin impedance and strong adhesion. The magnetic connection design enables easy integration to the ECG patch and reusability of circuit boards and batteries. The developed ECG sensor system was worn on a volunteer for real-time test. The results show that the measured signal quality will not be affected after normal activities.

Abstract:Novel thin‐film biostickers for electrophysiological monitoring are proposed that can be worn for several days without degradation even under extreme conditions. The electrodes based on a biphasic liquid metal silver composite combine advantages of dry electrodes (printability and non‐smearing behavior) with high‐quality signal like wet electrodes. Acquisition of multiple biosignals with user and application‐specific biostickers is shown. A novel architecture of materials and fabrication techniques is proposed that serves as a universal method for implementation of thin‐film biostickers for high resolution electrophysiological monitoring. Unlike the existing wearable patches, the presented solution can be worn for several days, and is not affected by daily routines such as physical exercise or taking bath. A printable biphasic liquid metal silver composite is used, both as the electrical interconnects and the electrodes. This allows combining advantages of dry electrodes, i.e., printability and non‐smearing behavior, with benefits of wet electrodes, i.e., high‐quality signal. A human subject study showed that these biphasic printed electrodes benefit from a lower electrode‐skin impedance compared to clinical grade Ag/AgCl electrodes. Digital printing enables autonomous fabrication of biostickers that are taylor‐made for each user and each application. A universal miniaturized electronic system for biopotential acquisition and wireless communication is develpoed, and demonstrated multiple biopotential acquisition cases, including electrocardiography, electroencephalography, electromyography, and electrooculography.

Abstract:Wearable dry electrodes are needed for long-term biopotential recordings but are limited by their imperfect compliance with the skin, especially during body movements and sweat secretions, resulting in high interfacial impedance and motion artifacts. Herein, we report an intrinsically conductive polymer dry electrode with excellent self-adhesiveness, stretchability, and conductivity. It shows much lower skin-contact impedance and noise in static and dynamic measurement than the current dry electrodes and standard gel electrodes, enabling to acquire high-quality electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in various conditions such as dry and wet skin and during body movement. Hence, this dry electrode can be used for long-term healthcare monitoring in complex daily conditions. We further investigated the capabilities of this electrode in a clinical setting and realized its ability to detect the arrhythmia features of atrial fibrillation accurately, and quantify muscle activity during deep tendon reflex testing and contraction against resistance.

Abstract:To acquire high-quality electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, traditional Ag/AgCl wet electrodes used together with conductive gel can effectively reduce electrode–skin interface impedance (EII) in a short term. However, their weaknesses of poor flexibility and instability can no longer meet the long-term monitoring requirements of intelligent wearable devices. Owing to the flexible dry electrode without conductive gel, it is a good choice to solve the critical problem on drying-out of conductive gel. Therefore, we develop a flexible microneedle array electrode (FMAE) based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate, which obtains reliable bioelectrical signals by way of penetrating into the stratum corneum (SC) of the skin. The fabrication process, including silicon mold, twice PDMS shape-transferring and encapsulation, has advantages of low cost, repeatable production and good biocompatibility. Afterwards, by comparing the performance with different electrodes, impedance test results indicate that the impedance of FMAE are smaller and more stable, and ECG tests in long term and at resting/jogging states also verify that FMAE can obtain durable, stable and reliable signals. In conclusion, FMAE is promising in long-term ECG monitoring.

Self‐adhesive and Biocompatible Dry Electrodes with Conformal Contact to Skin for Epidermal Electrophysiology

Abstract:Long‐term biopotential monitoring requires high‐performance biocompatible wearable dry electrodes. But currently, it is challenging to establish a form‐preserving fit with the skin, resulting in high interface impedance and motion artifacts. This research aims to present an innovative solution using an all‐green organic dry electrode that eliminates the aforementioned challenges. The dry electrode is prepared by introducing biocompatible maltitol into the chosen conductive polymer, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate). Thanks to the secondary doping and plasticizer effect of maltitol, the dry electrode exhibits good stretchability (62%), strong self‐adhesion (0.46 N/cm), high conductivity (102 S/cm), and low Young's modulus (7 MPa). It can always form a conformal contact with the skin even during body movements. Together with good electrical properties, the electrode enables a lower skin contact impedance compared to the current standard Ag/AgCl gel electrode. Consequently, the application of this dry electrode in bioelectrical signal measurement (electromyography, electrocardiography, electroencephalography) and long‐term biopotential monitoring was successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:Electrocardiography (ECG) is a primary tool for diagnosis of various types of disease and disorders such as arrhythmias, coronary heart disease, heart attack, mental disorders, etc. Reliable wearable ECG devices can be a valuable tool in early diagnosis and effective treatment of such disease and disorders. Convention wearable ECG sensor-systems are rigid, bulky, expensive, and the recorded ECG signals using these wearable devices lack required accuracy for medical diagnosis mainly due to motion artifacts that is originated from slippage of sensors on skin and/or instable interface between the soft sensor and the rigid electronic circuits. Here, we report a low-modulus, soft and stretchable wearable electrocardiography (ECG) sensor-system patch which enables continuous and long-term recording of ECG signals with minimal motion artifacts. This system consists of two reusable, detachable-attachable patches: sensor patch and circuit patch, as shown in Figure 1a. The reusable multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) based sensor patch is fabricated on stretchable elastomer substrate by our developed cost and time-effective method. Reusable, front-end and wireless circuit patch is made by integration of the off-the-shelf integrated circuit components with three-dimensional (3D) stretchable-deformable interconnects (SDI). SDIs are 3D springs of liquid metal (EGaIn). Unlike other reported liquid metal based interconnects, SDI has been designed in 3D form to increase the stretchability and make it low-modulus and robust to deformations in all directions. The stretchability of SDI structure is beyond 500% (the limit of our measurement system) without any negligible change in electrical resistivity of the interconnects. With less than 1% change in the resistance of SDIs after 50,000 cycles of applied tensile strain of 200%, the SDI structure ensures reliable stretchability and durability of the circuit patch for long-term electrocardiography. The sensor patch is soft, stretchable and it is fabricated using a low-cost scalable method. This soft and stretchable ECG sensor-system shows comparable performance with respect to medical grade Ag/AgCl wet gel electrodes. Our CNT-PDMS sensors shows low electrode-skin interface impedance and low susceptibility to motion artifact which similar of it in medical grade Ag/AgCl wet gel sensors (Fig. 1b). Further, it is waterproof, reusable and comfortable to wear. The circuit patch includes a rechargeable battery and ECG signals is wirelessly sent to a personal device such as cellphone, tablet and laptop through Bluetooth low energy (BLE) and it is displayed in real-time (Fig. 1c) Our developed sensor-system is a multi-use platform which can be applied for the detection of EMG, EEG or EOG signals.
