Abstract:This paper is concerned with numerical methods for a class of time fractional convection-diffusion-wave equations. The convection coefficient in the equation may be spatially variable and the time fractional derivative is in the Caputo sense with the order α (1 < α < 2). The class of the equations includes time fractional convection-diffusion-wave/diffusion-wave equations with or without damping as its special cases. In order to overcome the difficulty caused by variable coefficient problems, we first transform the original equation into a special and equivalent form, which is then discretized by a fourth-order compact finite difference method for the spatial derivative and by the L 1 approximation coupled with the Crank-Nicolson technique for the time derivative. The local truncation error and the solvability of the method are discussed in detail. A rigorous theoretical analysis of the stability and convergence is carried out using a discrete energy analysis method. The optimal error estimates in the discrete H 1, L 2 and L ∞ norms are obtained under the mild condition that the time step is smaller than a positive constant, which depends solely upon physical parameters involved (this condition is no longer required for the special case of constant coefficients). Applications using three model problems give numerical results that demonstrate the effectiveness and the accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:high-order compact finite difference method is proposed for solving a class of time fractional convection-subdiffusion equations. After a transformation of the original equation, the spatial derivative is discretized by a fourth-order compact finite difference method and the time fractional derivative is approximated by a (2-α ) -order implicit scheme. The local truncation error and the solvability of the method are discussed in detail. A rigorous theoretical analysis of the stability and convergence is carried out using the discrete energy method, and the optimal error estimates in the discrete H^1 , L^2 and L^∞ norms are obtained. Applications using several model problems give numerical results that demonstrate the effectiveness and the accuracy of this new method.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a numerical method for a class of one-dimensional multi-term time-fractional convection-reaction-diffusion problems, where the differential equation contains a sum of the Caputo time-fractional derivatives of different orders between 0 and 1. In general the solutions of such problems typically exhibit a weak singularity at the initial time. A compact exponential finite difference method, using the well-known L1 formula for each time-fractional derivative and a fourth-order compact exponential difference approximation for the spatial discretization, is proposed on a mesh that is generally nonuniform in time and uniform in space. Taking into account the initial weak singularity of the solution, the stability and convergence of the method is proved and the optimal error estimate in the discrete L2-norm is obtained by developing a discrete energy analysis technique which enables us to overcome the difficulties caused by the nonsymmetric discretization matrices. The error estimate shows that the method has the spatial fourth-order convergence, and reveals how to select an appropriate mesh parameter to obtain the temporal optimal convergence. The extension of the method to two-dimensional problems is also discussed. Numerical results confirm the theoretical convergence result, and show the applicability of the method to convection dominated problems. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, the multi‐term time fractional mixed diffusion and diffusion‐wave equation is investigated. Firstly, a compact finite difference scheme with fourth‐order spatial accuracy and high‐order temporal accuracy is derived. Then, the unconditional stability and convergence in the maximum norm of the derived high‐order compact finite difference method have been discussed rigorously by means of the energy method. Numerical experiments are presented to test the convergence order in the temporal and spatial direction, respectively. Additionally, to precisely demonstrate the computational efficiency of the derived high‐order compact finite difference method, the maximum norm error and the CPU time are measured in contrast with the second‐order finite difference scheme for the same temporal grid size. Finally, a practical example is presented to show the applicability of the time fractional mixed diffusion and diffusion‐wave model and the efficiency of the derived high‐order compact finite difference method.</p>

Abstract:Time fractional diffusion-wave equations are generalizations of classical diffusion and wave equations which are used in modeling practical phenomena of diffusion and wave in fluid flow, oil strata and others. In this paper we construct two finite difference schemes to solve a class of initial-boundary value time fractional diffusion-wave equations based on its equivalent partial integro-differential equations. Under the weak smoothness conditions, we prove that our two schemes are convergent with first-order accuracy in temporal direction and second-order accuracy in spatial direction. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with high-order numerical methods for a class of fractional mobile/immobile convection–diffusion equations. The convection coefficient of the equation may be spatially variable. In order to overcome the difficulty caused by variable coefficient problems, we first transform the original equation into a special and equivalent form, which is then discretized by a fourth-order compact finite difference approximation for the spatial derivative and a second-order difference approximation for the time first derivative and the Caputo time fractional derivative. The local truncation error and the solvability of the resulting scheme are discussed in detail. The (almost) unconditional stability and convergence of the method are proved using a discrete energy analysis method. A Richardson extrapolation algorithm is presented to enhance the temporal accuracy of the computed solution from the second-order to the third-order. Applications using two model problems give numerical results that demonstrate the accuracy of the new method and the high efficiency of the Richardson extrapolation algorithm.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the study of high order difference methods for the fractional diffusion-wave equation. The time fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo’s sense. A compact difference scheme is presented and analyzed. It is shown that the difference scheme is unconditionally convergent and stable in L∞-norm. The convergence order is O(τ3-α+h4). Two numerical examples are also given to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with numerical methods for a class of multi-dimensional fractional diffusion-wave equations with a time fractional derivative of order α ( 1<α <2 ). A compact locally one-dimensional (LOD) finite difference method is proposed for the equations. The resulting scheme consists of one-dimensional tridiagonal systems, and all computations are carried out completely in one spatial direction as for one-dimensional problems. The unconditional stability and H^1 norm convergence of the scheme are rigorously proved for the three-dimensional case. The error estimates show that the proposed compact LOD method converges with the order (3-α ) in time and 4 in space. Numerical results confirm our theoretical analysis and illustrate the effectiveness of this new method.

Abstract:A high-order compact finite difference method is proposed for solving a class of time-fractional sub-diffusion equations. The diffusion coefficient of the equation may be spatially variable and the time-fractional derivative is in the Caputo sense with the order a. (0, 1). The Caputo time-fractional derivative is discretized by a (3 - alpha) th-order numerical formula (called the L2 formula here) which is constructed by piecewise quadratic interpolating polynomials but does not require any sub-stepping scheme for the approximation at the first-time level. The variable coefficient spatial differential operator is approximated by a fourth-order compact finite difference operator. By developing a technique of discrete energy analysis, a full theoretical analysis of the stability and convergence of the method is carried out for the general case of variable coefficient and for all a. (0, 1). The optimal error estimate is obtained in the L-2 norm and shows that the proposed method has the temporal (3 - alpha) th-order accuracy and the spatial fourth-order accuracy. Further approximations are also considered for enlarging the applicability of the method while preserving its high-order accuracy. Abstract:This paper is devoted to the numerical treatment of time fractional diffusion equation with Neumann boundary conditions. A compact difference scheme is derived for solving this problem, by combining the classic finite difference method for Caputo derivative in time, the second order central difference method in space and the compact difference treatment for Neumann boundary conditions. The solvability, stability and convergence of this scheme are rigorously discussed. We prove that the convergence order of this proposed scheme is O(tau(2-alpha) + h(2)), where tau, alpha and h are the time step size, the index of fractional derivative and space step size respectively. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with numerical methods for a class of time-fractional convection-reaction-diffusion equations. The convection and reaction coefficients of the equation may be spatially variable. Based on the weighted and shifted Grünwald–Letnikov formula for the time-fractional derivative and a compact finite difference approximation for the spatial derivative, we establish an unconditionally stable compact difference method. The local truncation error and the solvability of the resulting scheme are discussed in detail. The stability of the method and its convergence of third-order in time and fourth-order in space are rigorously proved by the discrete energy method. Combining this method with a Richardson extrapolation, we present an extrapolated compact difference method which is fourth-order accurate in both time and space. A rigorous proof for the convergence of the extrapolation method is given. Numerical results confirm our theoretical analysis, and demonstrate the accuracy of the compact difference method and the effectiveness of the extrapolated compact difference method.

Abstract:We consider the numerical solutions of the multi-term time fractional diffusion and diffusion-wave equations with variable coefficients in a bounded domain. The time fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. A unified numerical scheme based on finite difference method in time and Legendre spectral method in space is proposed. Detailed error analysis is given for the fully discrete scheme. The convergence rate of the proposed scheme in L2 norm is O(τ2+N1−m), where τ, N, and m are the time-step size, polynomial degree, and regularity in the space variable of the exact solution, respectively. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:A set of high-order compact finite difference methods is proposed for solving a class of Caputo-type fractional sub-diffusion equations in conservative form. The diffusion coefficient of the equation may be spatially variable, and the proposed methods have the global convergence order \(\mathcal{O}(\tau ^{r}+h^{4})\), where \(r\ge 2\) is a positive integer and \(\tau \) and h are the temporal and spatial steps. Such new high-order compact difference methods greatly improve the known methods in the literature. The local truncation error and the solvability of the methods are discussed in detail. By applying a discrete energy technique to the matrix form of the methods, a rigorous theoretical analysis of the stability and convergence of the methods is carried out for the case of \(2\le r\le 6\), and the optimal error estimates in the weighted \(H^{1}\), \(L^{2}\) and \(L^{\infty }\) norms are obtained for the general case of variable coefficient. Applications are given to two model problems, and some numerical results are presented to illustrate the various convergence orders of the methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the numerical solutions of the time fractional sub-diffusion equation with the variable coefficient subject to both Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann boundary conditions. A compact difference scheme is proposed for solving the equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The unconditional stability and the global convergence of the scheme in the maximum norm are proved rigorously with the help of the newly introduced norms regarding to the variable coefficient. The convergence order is O(τ2-α+h4), where τ is the temporal grid size, α is the order of fractional derivative and h is the spatial grid size. Besides, a box-type scheme is derived by introducing new intermediate variable for the problem with Neumann boundary conditions. The stability and the global convergence of box-type scheme in maximum norm are also presented. Numerical experiments are carried out to confirm the theoretical results of the proposed schemes.

Abstract:Some efficient numerical schemes are proposed to solve one-dimensional and two-dimensional multi-term time fractional diffusion-wave equation, by combining the compact difference approach for the spatial discretisation and an L1 approximation for the multi-term time Caputo fractional derivatives. The unconditional stability and global convergence of these schemes are proved rigorously, and several applications testify to their efficiency and confirm the orders of convergence.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact finite difference scheme for the fractional sub-diffusion equations is derived. After a transformation of the original problem, the L1 discretization is applied for the time-fractional part and fourth-order accuracy compact approximation for the second-order space derivative. The unique solvability of the difference solution is discussed. The stability and convergence of the finite difference scheme in maximum norm are proved using the energy method, where a new inner product is introduced for the theoretical analysis. The technique is quite novel and different from previous analytical methods. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-order compact finite difference method is proposed to solve the three-dimensional (3D) time fractional convection–diffusion equation with subdiffusion (0<α<1). After a transform of the original problem, a difference scheme which is combined the Padé approximation for the space derivatives with the classical backward differentiation formula for time fractional derivative is presented. The new scheme is fourth-order accurate in space and (2-α)-order accurate in time. To increase the efficiency and stability of numerical solutions, the alternating direction implicit (ADI) operator splitting approach is employed. The stability analysis shows that this method is unconditionally stable. Numerical experiments are carried out to support the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a finite difference/collocation method for two-dimensional time fractional diffusion equation with generalized fractional operator. The main purpose of this paper is to design a high order numerical scheme for the new generalized time fractional diffusion equation. First, a finite difference approximation formula is derived for the generalized time fractional derivative, which is verified with order 2 - alpha (0 < alpha < 1). Then, collocation method is introduced for the two-dimensional space approximation. Unconditional stability of the scheme is proved. To make the method more efficient, the alternating direction implicit method is introduced to reduce the computational cost. At last, numerical experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the scheme.
