Abstract:Several preliminary QCD results from e+e- interactions at LEP are reported. These include studies of event shape variables, which are used to determine alpha_s and for studies of the validity of power corrections. Further, a study of color reconnection effects in 3-jet Z decays is reported.

Uniformly Stable Explicitly Solvable Finite Difference Method for Fractional Diffusion Equations

Abstract:A finite difference scheme for the one-dimensional space fractional diffusion equation is presented and analysed. The scheme is constructed by modifying the shifted Grunwald approximation to the spatial fractional derivative and using an asymmetric discretisation technique. By calculating the unknowns in differential nodal point sequences at the odd and even time levels, the discrete solution of the scheme can be obtained explicitly. We prove that the scheme is uniformly stable. The error between the discrete solution and the analytical solution in the discrete l(2) norm is optimal in some cases. Numerical results for several examples are consistent with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The fractional diffusion equation is discretized by an implicit finite difference scheme with the shifted Grünwald formula, which is unconditionally stable. The coefficient matrix of the discretized linear system is equal to the sum of the identity matrix with two diagonal-times-Toeplitz matrices. In this paper, the alternating direction implicit (ADI)-like method based on the classical ADI iteration is proposed to solve the discretized linear system. Theoretical analyses show that the ADI-like iteration method is convergent. Each iteration of this method requires the solutions of two linear systems with Hessenberg coefficient matrices. These two systems can be solved effectively by Hessenberg LU factorization. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the ADI-like iteration method.

Abstract:Fractional order diffusion equations are viewed as generalizations of classical diffusion equations, treating super-diffusive flow processes. In this Letter, in order to solve the two-sided fractional advection–diffusion equation, the fractional Crank–Nicholson method (FCN) is given, which is based on shifted Grünwald–Letnikov formula. It is shown that this method is unconditionally stable, consistent and convergent. The accuracy with respect to the time step is of order (Δt)2. A numerical example is presented to confirm the conclusions.

Abstract:Anomalous diffusion is a phenomenon that cannot be modeled accurately by second-order diffusion equations, but is better described by fractional diffusion models. The nonlocal nature of the fractional diffusion operators makes substantially more difficult the mathematical analysis of these models and the establishment of suitable numerical schemes. This paper proposes and analyzes the first finite difference method for solving {\em variable-coefficient} fractional differential equations, with two-sided fractional derivatives, in one-dimensional space. The proposed scheme combines first-order forward and backward Euler methods for approximating the left-sided fractional derivative when the right-sided fractional derivative is approximated by two consecutive applications of the first-order backward Euler method. Our finite difference scheme reduces to the standard second-order central difference scheme in the absence of fractional derivatives. The existence and uniqueness of the solution for the proposed scheme are proved, and truncation errors of order $h$ are demonstrated, where $h$ denotes the maximum space step size. The numerical tests illustrate the global $O(h)$ accuracy of our scheme, except for nonsmooth cases which, as expected, have deteriorated convergence rates.

Abstract:An adaptive finite difference scheme for variable-order fractional-time subdiffusion equations in the Caputo form is studied. The fractional-time derivative is discretized by the L1 procedure but using nonhomogeneous timesteps. The size of these timesteps is chosen by an adaptive algorithm to keep the local error bounded around a preset value, a value that can be chosen at will. For some types of problems, this adaptive method is much faster than the corresponding usual method with fixed timesteps while keeping the local error of the numerical solution around the preset values. These findings turn out to be similar to those found for constant-order fractional diffusion equations.

Abstract:In this article, a new numerical technique is proposed for solving the two‐dimensional time fractional subdiffusion equation with nonhomogeneous terms. After a transformation of the original problem, standard central difference approximation is used for the spatial discretization. For the time step, a new fractional alternating direction implicit (FADI) scheme based on the L1 approximation is considered. This FADI scheme is constructed by adding a small term, so it is different from standard FADI methods. The solvability, unconditional stability and H1 norm convergence are proved. Stability and Complexity Analyses of Finite Difference Algorithms for the Time-Fractional Diffusion Equation

Abstract:Fractional differential equations (FDEs) are an extension of the theory of fractional calculus. However, due to the difficulty in finding analytical solutions, there have not been extensive applications of FDEs until recent decades. With the advent of increasing computational capacity along with advances in numerical methods, there has been increased interest in using FDEs to represent complex physical processes, where dynamics may not be as accurately captured with classical differential equations. The time-fractional diffusion equation is an FDE that represents the underlying physical mechanism of anomalous diffusion. But finding tractable analytical solutions to FDEs is often much more involved than solving for the solutions of integer order differential equations, and in many cases it is not possible to frame solutions in a closed form expression that can be easily simulated or visually represented. Therefore the development of numerical methods is vital. In previous work we implemented the full 2D time-fractional diffusion equation as a Forward Time Central Space finite difference equation by using the Grünwald-Letnikov definition of the fractional derivative. In addition, we derived an adaptive time step version that improves on calculation speed, with some tradeoff in accuracy. Here, we explore and characterize stability of these algorithms, in order to define bounds on computational parameters that are crucial for performing accurate simulations. We also analyze the time complexity of the algorithms, and describe an alternate adaptive time step approach that utilizes a linked list implementation, which yields better algorithmic efficiency.

Abstract:In the current paper, the numerical solutions for a class of fractional advection–diffusion equations with a kind of new generalized time-fractional derivative proposed last year are discussed in a bounded domain. The fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo type. The numerical solutions are obtained by using the finite difference method. The stability of numerical scheme is also investigated. Numerical examples are solved with different fractional orders and step sizes, which illustrate that the numerical scheme is stable, simple and effective for solving the generalized advection–diffusion equations. The order of convergence of the numerical scheme is evaluated numerically, and the first-order convergence rate has been observed.
A fast modified finite difference method for time fractional diffusion equations with weakly singular solution

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a fast modified finite difference method for the time fractional diffusion equation with weakly singular solution at the initial moment. First, the time fractional derivative is approximated by the modified formula on graded meshes, and the spatial derivative is approximated by the standard central difference formula on uniform meshes. Therefore, a numerical scheme for the time fractional diffusion equation is obtained. Then, the Von-Neumann stability analysis method is used to analyze the stability of the scheme, and the truncation error estimate is given. On the other hand, the time fractional derivative is nonlocal, which has historical dependency, thus, the cost of computation and memory consumption are expensive. Based on the sum-of exponentials approximation (SOE) technique, we optimize the numerical format, reduce the complex amount from to , and the amount of computation from to , where M , and represent the number of spatial points, the number of temporal points, and the exponential amount, respectively. Finally, numerical examples verify the effectiveness of the scheme and theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a fast high order method for the time-fractional diffusion equation on unbounded spatial domains. The proposed numerical method is a combination of a time-stepping scheme and spectral method for the spatial discretization. First, we reformulate the unbounded domain problem into a bounded domain problem by introducing suitable artificial boundary conditions. Then the time fractional derivatives involved in the equation and the artificial boundary condition are discretized using the so-called L2 formula and sum-of-exponentials (SOE) approximation. The former has been a popular formula for discretization of the Caputo fractional derivative, while the latter is a computational cost reducing technique frequently employed in recent years for convolution integrals. The spatial discretization makes use of the standard Legendre spectral method. The stability and the accuracy of the full discrete problem are analyzed. Our obtained theoretical results include a rigorous proof of the convergence order for both uniform mesh and graded mesh, and a stability proof for the uniform mesh. Finally, several numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical results and to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:As fractional diffusion equations can describe the early breakthrough and the heavy-tail decay features observed in anomalous transport of contaminants in groundwater and porous soil, they have been commonly used in the related mathematical descriptions. These models usually involve long-time-range computation, which is a critical obstacle for their application; improvement of computational efficiency is of great significance. In this paper, a semi-discrete method is presented for solving a class of time-fractional diffusion equations that overcome the critical long-time-range computation problem. In the procedure, the spatial domain is discretized by the finite element method, which reduces the fractional diffusion equations to approximate fractional relaxation equations. As analytical solutions exist for the latter equations, the burden arising from long-time-range computation can effectively be minimized. To illustrate its efficiency and simplicity, four examples are presented. In addition, the method is used to solve the time-fractional advection–diffusion equation characterizing the bromide transport process in a fractured granite aquifer. The prediction closely agrees with the experimental data, and the heavy-tail decay of the anomalous transport process is well represented.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact finite difference scheme for the fractional sub-diffusion equations is derived. After a transformation of the original problem, the L1 discretization is applied for the time-fractional part and fourth-order accuracy compact approximation for the second-order space derivative. The unique solvability of the difference solution is discussed. The stability and convergence of the finite difference scheme in maximum norm are proved using the energy method, where a new inner product is introduced for the theoretical analysis. The technique is quite novel and different from previous analytical methods. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, we first propose an unconditionally stable implicit difference scheme for solving generalized time-space fractional diffusion equations (GTSFDEs) with variable coefficients. The numerical scheme utilizes the $L1$-type formula for the generalized Caputo fractional derivative in time discretization and the second-order weighted and shifted Grünwald difference (WSGD) formula in spatial discretization, respectively. Theoretical results and numerical tests are conducted to verify the $(2 - \gamma)$-order and 2-order of temporal and spatial convergence with $\gamma\in(0,1)$ the order of Caputo fractional derivative, respectively. The fast sum-of-exponential approximation of the generalized Caputo fractional derivative and Toeplitz-like coefficient matrices are also developed to accelerate the proposed implicit difference scheme. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed numerical scheme and its good potential for large-scale simulation of GTSFDEs.

Abstract:A reaction-diffusion problem with a Caputo time derivative is considered. An integral discretization scheme on a graded mesh along with a decomposition of the exact solution is proposed. The truncation error estimate of the discretization scheme is derived by using the remainder formula of the linear interpolation and some inequality estimate techniques. It is proved that the scheme is second-order convergent by applying a difference analogue of Gronwall's inequality, which exhibits an enhancement in the convergence rate compared with the L1 schemes. Numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical result.

Abstract:In this paper, for a class of fractional sub-diffusion equations on a space unbounded domain, firstly, exact artificial boundary conditions, which involve the time-fractional derivatives, are derived using the Laplace transform technique. Then the original problem on the space unbounded domain is reduced to the initial-boundary value problem on a space bounded domain. Secondly, an efficient finite difference approximation for the reduced initial-boundary problem on the space bounded domain is constructed. Different from the method of order reduction used in [37] for the fractional sub-diffusion equations on a space half-infinite domain, the presented difference scheme, which is more simple than that in the previous work, is developed using the direct discretization method, i.e. the approximate method of considering the governing equations at mesh points directly. The stability and convergence of the scheme with numerical accuracy O(τ2-γ+h2) are proved by means of discrete energy method and Sobolev imbedding inequality, where γ is the order of time-fractional derivative in the governing equation, τ and h are the temporal stepsize and spatial stepsize, respectively. Thirdly, a compact difference scheme for the case of γ⩽2/3 is derived with the truncation errors of fourth-order accuracy for interior points and third-order accuracy for boundary points, respectively. Then the global convergence order O(τ2-γ+h4) of the compact difference scheme is proved. Finally, numerical experiments are used to verify the numerical accuracy and the efficiency of the obtained schemes.

Abstract:We consider a time and space-symmetric fractional diffusion equation (TSS-FDE) under homogeneous Dirichlet conditions and homogeneous Neumann conditions. The TSS-FDE is obtained from the standard diffusion equation by replacing the first-order time derivative by a Caputo fractional derivative, and the second order space derivative by a symmetric fractional derivative. First, a method of separating variables expresses the analytical solution of the TSS-FDE in terms of the Mittag--Leffler function. Second, we propose two numerical methods to approximate the Caputo time fractional derivative: the finite difference method; and the Laplace transform method. The symmetric space fractional derivative is approximated using the matrix transform method. Abstract:A class of finite difference schemes for solving a fractional anti-diffusive equation, recently proposed by Andrew C. Fowler to describe the dynamics of dunes, is considered. Their linear stability is analyzed using the standard Von Neumann analysis: stability criteria are found and checked numerically. Moreover, we investigate the consistency and convergence of these schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the numerical methods for both the forward and backward problems of a time-space fractional diffusion equation. For the two-dimensional forward problem, we propose a finite difference method. The stability of the scheme and the corresponding Fast Preconditioned Conjugated Gradient algorithm are given. For the backward problem, since it is ill-posed, we use a quasi-boundary-value method to deal with it. Based on the Fourier transform, we obtain two kinds of order optimal convergence rates by using an a-priori and an a-posteriori regularization parameter choice rules. Numerical examples for both forward and backward problems show that the proposed numerical methods work well.
