Abstract:In order to investigate semi-conductor nanocrystals in polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs), CdSe nanocrystals-conjugated polymer composite was used as the emitting material. High-quality CdSe were synthesized successfully by simple chemical colloid methods and doped into a green light-emitting polymer, PFBT8. As the concentration of CdSe in composite increases, the turn-on voltage of the device decreases, while EL intensity increases. The improvement is more remarkable when the concentration of CdSe increases in a certain range.

Abstract:A series of red light-emitting chelating electrophosphorescent polymers based on fluorene-alt-carbazole copolymer (PFCz) with Ir complexes on the backbone were synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation of A-A- and B-B-type monomers. Three 2-(2'-benzo[b]thienyl)-pyridinato (btp) biscycloiridium complexes with different ancillary ligands combined with the neighboring fluorene segments were served as the guest complexes in the chelating polymers. Because the solubility of the complex monomers is very important for polymerization, the bidentate ancillary ligand of the bicycloiridium complexes also has an effect on the luminous properties of the chelating polymer. The best performance was achieved from device: ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PFBtpIrf5+PBD(30 wt%)/Ba/Al with the maximal external quantum efficiency of 1.93% 2 at a current density of 14.3 mA/cm(2) with the CIE coordinates of (0.69, 0.29).

Abstract:Quasi‐2D perovskites show great promise for light‐emitting diodes owing to suppressed non‐radiative losses enabled by the energy funneling/cascading nanostructures. However, for red emission quasi‐2D perovskites, these ideal energy landscapes for efficient perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) can rarely be achieved due to detrimental aggregation of the low‐dimensional ligands in perovskite precursors, leading to poor device efficiency and stability. Here, a ligand‐modulated dimensionality control strategy is explored to achieve uniform phase distribution and reduce defect density for efficient light emission. In contrast to the model phenethylammonium iodide 2D ligand, the formation of small‐n phases can be inhibited by a structurally similar phenoxyethylammonium iodide ligand owing to the weakened aromatic stacking between ligands. Besides, the oxygen atoms can interact with the uncoordinated Pb2+ ions and promote the NI coordination in the perovskites, which greatly reduces the non‐radiative recombination defects in the ionic lattice. With this simple and effective approach, deep‐red quasi‐2D PeLEDs with record‐high external quantum efficiency of 21.6% and decent operational stability are achieved without the need for additional additives. These results highlight the potential of ligand‐modulated dimensionality control to achieve highly efficient and stable PeLEDs with a facile fabrication process.
Dual Ligands Synergism Strategy for Fabrication of Highly Luminescent FAPbBr3 Nanocrystal Films and Efficient Electroluminescent Devices

Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have attracted wide spread interest owing to their tunable emissions, high color purity and cost effective fabrication process. It is widely recognized that high quality perovskite nanocrystal (PeNC) film is crucial for obtaining efficient PeLEDs. However, due to the fast crystallization rate of perovskite precursors, it is of great challenge to achieve precise control of size and dimension on PeNC film through single ligand additive. Here, two types of ligand with different effect, phenethylamine bromide (PEABr) and benzoic acid (BZA), are together introduced for fabrication of formamidine lead bromide (FAPbBr3) NC films. By systematically investigating the formation process of FAPbBr3 crystals under dual ligands, the regulation mechanism and ligand synergistic effect are revealed. Then, highly luminescent and uniform FAPbBr3 NC films with well confined three dimensional structure are fabricated through finely tuning the ratio between PEABr and BZA. Efficient electroluminescence (EL) devices are further achieved based on these obtained high quality FAPbBr3 NC films with maximum current efficiency of 39.0 cd/A and external quantum efficiency of 9.5%. Besides, the ligand synergistic effect on improving deice performance is explained and clarified. Moreover, EL devices based on dual ligands exhibit significantly prolonged operation lifetime and better adaptability for large scale displays, showing potential advantages in future LEDs applications

Abstract:Despite rapid developments of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on emerging perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs), it remains challenging to achieve devices with integrated high efficiencies and high brightness because of the insulating long-chain ligands used for the PeNCs. Herein, we develop highly luminescent and stable formamidinium lead bromide PeNCs capped with rationally designed short aromatic ligands of 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (NSA) for LEDs. Compared with commonly used oleic acid ligands, the NSA molecules not only preserve the surface properties of the PeNCs during the purification but also notably improve the electrical properties of the assembled emissive layers, ensuring efficient charge injection/transport in the devices. The resulting champion LED with electroluminescence approaching the Rec. 2020 green primary color demonstrates a high brightness of 67 115 cd cm(-2) and a peak external quantum efficiency of 19.2%. More impressively, the device shows negligibly decreased efficiency at an elevated brightness of 20 000 cd cm(-2) and a well-retained efficiency of over 10% at around 65 000 cd cm(-2), presenting a breakthrough in LEDs based on PeNCs.

Abstract:In contrast to conventional colloidal quantum dots (CQDs), management of insulating ligands on perovskite CQDs is challenging because their ionic bonds are highly vulnerable to polar solvents. Consequently, there have been only a few examples of perovskite CQD solar cells incorporating relatively robust inorganic perovskite of which optoelectronic properties are not ideal for photovoltaic devices. Here, we report efficient and stable CQD solar cells based on formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) CQDs realized by rational surface regulation. Tailoring polarity of antisolvents for the post-synthetic process enabled effective removal of the insulating ligands on FAPbI3 CQDs while preserving perovskite cores. Owing to the enhanced inter-dot electrical coupling, a power-conversion efficiency of 8.38% was demonstrated. Furthermore, the FAPbI3 CQDs-based devices showed superior stability over those of bulk FAPbI3 devices. Thermodynamic and crystallographic analyses revealed that enhanced contribution of the surface energy and lattice contraction contribute to their superior stability.

Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are the next promising display technologies because of their high color purity and wide color gamut, while two classical emitter forms, i.e., polycrystalline domains and quantum dots, are encountering bottlenecks. Weak carrier confinement of large polycrystalline domains leads to inadequate radiative recombination, and surface ligands on quantum dots are the main annihilation sites for injected carriers. Here, pinpointing these issues, we screened out an amphoteric agent, namely, 2-(2-aminobenzoyl)benzoic acid (2-BA), to precisely control the in situ growth of FAPbI3 (FA: formamidine) nanodomains with enhanced space confinement, preferred crystal orientation, and passivated trap states on the transport-layer substrate. The amphoteric 2-BA performs bidentate chelating functions on the formation of ultrasmall perovskite colloids (<1 nm) in the precursor, resulting in a smoother FAPbI3 emitting layer. Based on monodispersed and homogeneous nanodomain films, a near-infrared PeLED device with a champion efficiency of >22% plus enhanced T80 operational stability was achieved. The proposed perovskite nanodomain film tends to be a mainstream emitter toward the performance breakthrough of PeLED devices covering visible wavelengths beyond infrared.

Abstract:Efficient and stable green emission of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is an essential element for their potential applications in full-color displays and solid-state lighting, aspiring to become a new generation of light-emitting devices. Rational manipulation of the entire electroluminescence process is expected to prepare high-performance devices. Hence, to generate effective green PeLEDs that simultaneously reduce energy loss during electron–photon conversion and increase light outcoupling, a simple device architecture is suggested. Consequently, in our research, we utilized thermally activated delayed fluorescent materials DTC-mBPSB and BTBC-DPS to modify the hole transport layer. Employing efficient interfacial engineering to modulate the growth of perovskite crystals resulted in dense perovskite films and effectively reduced the density of defective states by providing lone electron pairs to neutralize unsaturated Pb2+ via oxygen atoms in the passivation group of the SO bond. Furthermore, this approach increases the carrier transport abilities and thus facilitates the occurrence of more radiative recombination. Hence, this approach contributes to the realization of EQE of 11.04% (DTC-mBPSB) and 13.97% (BTBC-DPS), respectively, for green PeLEDs emitted at 512 nm and enhances the operational stability, establishing a foundation for subsequent studies.

Manipulation of Charge Dynamics for Efficient and Bright Blue Perovskite Light‐Emitting Diodes with Chiral Ligands

Abstract:Perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) emerge as a promising class of optoelectronic devices for next‐generation displays and lighting technology. However, the performance of blue PeLEDs lags far behind that of their green and red counterparts, including the unachieved trade‐off between high efficiency and high luminance, severe efficiency roll‐off, and unsatisfactory power efficiency. Here, a multi‐functional chiral ligand of L‐phenylalanine methyl ester hydrochloride is strategically introduced into quasi‐two‐dimensional perovskites, which can effectively passivate defects, modulate the phase distribution, improve photoluminescence quantum yield, guarantee high‐quality film morphology, and enhance charge transport. Furthermore, ladder‐like hole transport layers are established, boosting charge injection and balance. The resultant sky‐blue PeLEDs (the photoluminescence peak is 493 nm, and the electroluminescence peak is 497 nm) exhibit an external quantum efficiency of 12.43% at 1000 cd m−2 and a record power efficiency of 18.42 lm W−1, rendering that the performance is among the best blue PeLEDs. Abstract:Highly luminescent FAPb0.7Sn0.3Br3 nanocrystals with an average photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 92% were synthesized by the ligand-assisted reprecipitation method. The 41-nm-thick perovskite film with a smooth surface and strong PL intensity was proven to be a suitable luminescent layer for perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). Electrical tests indicate that the double hole-transport layers (HTLs) played an important role in improving the electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency of PeLEDs due to their cascade-like level alignment. The PeLED based on poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(4,40-(N-(p-butylphenyl))-diphenylamine)] (TFB)/poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) double HTLs produced a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 9%, which was improved by approximately 10.9 and 5.14 times when compared with single HTL PVK or the TFB device, respectively. The enhancement of the hole transmission capacity by TFB/PVK double HTLs was confirmed by the hole-only device and was responsible for the dramatic EQE improvement.

Abstract:Perovskite-based light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are arousing great interest as promising technology for next-generation displays due to their narrow emission linewidth, tunable emission wavelength, and high photoluminescence quantum yield. Due to the superiorities of the simple fabricating process and high efficiency, thein situpreparation of PeLEDs has attracted more attention. However, numerous defects are induced due to the ligand loss in thein situfabrication of the perovskite film, which restricts the performance improvement of PeLEDs to a larger extent. Here, we introduce a dual ligand 2,2-diphenylethylamine bromide (DPEA-Br) in precursor solution andn-octylphosphonic acid (OPA) in antisolvent forin situfabricating FAPbBr(3)perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). As a result, the OPA-FAPbBr(3)PNC films demonstrate a higher crystallinity, a longer radiative lifetime, and an improved environmental stability, due to the synergistic effect of compensating ligands and passivating defects of OPA. Finally, we obtain a significantly enhanced device efficiency of a maximum luminance of 3273 cd m(-2)and a current efficiency of 17.7 cd A(-1), which are 12.5 times and 6.1 times higher than those of the control device, respectively. The ligand compensation method with OPA proposed in this work can provide a robust platform for achieving high-quality PNC films and highly efficient PeLEDs.

Abstract:The commonly used long-chain ligands in CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) hinder the electronic coupling and charge transport in optoelectronic devices; therefore, surface ligand management is crucial to optimize device performance. In this report, we demonstrate a simple and feasible aromatic carboxylic acid ligand management to obtain high-efficiency CsPbBr3 QD light-emitting solar cells (LESCs). Benzoic acid (BA) is used to replace the excess insulating ligands so that the charge transport of QD films is greatly improved, and the trap-assisted nonradiative recombination is also effectively inhibited. Consequently, the CsPbBr3 QD LESCs yield an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.46% for the champion device and function as green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a maximum brightness of 584 cd/m2. This work sheds light on the ligand management in perovskite QDs and provides a new avenue to realize high-performance multifunctional optoelectronic devices based on perovskite QDs.

Abstract:The mixed 2D/3D perovskite has been proved to be a promising candidate to increase the exciton binding energy in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, the complex phase distribution and impurity (usually referring to ligands) limit the stability of the corresponding PeLEDs. Here, a novel molecule, cyclopentanamine hydrobromide (CyPA center dot HBr), is adopted to construct a mixed 2D/3D perovskite by partial substitution of FA with CyPA, realizing fine phase control for improved device stability. The adoption of CyPA center dot HBr helps to tune perovskite grain growth and passivate the defect, resulting in high coverage and smooth thin film with improved photoluminescence property. The PeLEDs with an optimized CyPA center dot HBr concentration of a molar ratio of 40% exhibit a pure green emission with a full width at half maximum of 22 nm, an external quantum efficiency of 6.55%, and a maximum brightness of 9408 cd m(-2) simultaneously. Interestingly, the CyPA center dot HBr-based device shows a half-lifetime two times longer than the one based on the most commonly used ligand of phenethylammonium bromide (PEA center dot HBr), assigned to the better phase control ability of CyPA center dot HBr in 2D/3D perovskite. Those results testify the importance of ligands to modulate perovskite phase along with efficient passivation defects for better stability of PeLEDs.

Abstract:A short‐chain fluoroaromatic ligand, 4‐fluoro‐phenethylammonium bromide, is used to fine‐tune the refractive index (n) and horizontal dipole ratio values (ΘH) of formamidinium lead bromide nanocrystal (FAPbBr3 NC) film to improve its outcoupling efficiency. The external quantum efficiency of perovskite light‐emitting diodes based on FAPbBr3 NC film is elevated from 6.45% to 11.34% following optical engineering. Formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3) nanocrystals (NCs) that exhibit ultra‐pure green emission are the most promising candidates for future displays. Despite the rapid development of light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) based on perovskite NCs (PeNCs), there is limited research detailing their intrinsic light outcoupling. Herein, the use of a short‐chain fluoroaromatic ligand, 4‐fluoro‐phenethylammonium bromide (FPEABr), via a facile spin‐casting method is proposed to fine‐tune the refractive index (n) and horizontal dipole ratio values (ΘH) of the perovskite emitter layer and simultaneously suppress the defects formed during film deposition. After FPEABr ligand exchange, the FAPbBr3 NC films exhibit a refractive index n that is significantly lower (by about 0.4) than bulk (2D/quasi‐2D or 3D) perovskite films and show an enhanced ΘH value of 77%. Therefore, ultra‐pure green perovskite LEDs are successfully produced with a maximum current efficiency of ≈50 cd A−1, a maximum luminance of 21 304 cd m−2, and a peak external quantum efficiency of 11.34% at a high luminance of 2804 cd m−2, approaching the theoretical value of 11.90% given the structure, photoluminescence quantum yield, and ΘH.

However, violent interfacial reactions between the bromine-based perovskites and ZnO-based films severely limit the performance of inverted green PeLEDs, whose efficiency and stability lag far behind those of their near-infrared counterparts. Here, a controllable interfacial amidation between the bromine-based perovskites and magnesium-doped ZnO (ZnMgO) film utilizing caprylyl sulfobetaine (SFB) is realized. The SFB molecules strongly interact with formamidinium bromide, decelerating the amidation reaction between formamidinium and carboxylate groups on the ZnMgO film, thus regulating the crystallization of FAPbBr3. Combined with the passivation of benzylamine, a FAPbBr3 bulk film directly deposited on a ZnMgO substrate with single-crystal characteristics is obtained, exhibiting a high photoluminescence quantum yield of above 80%. The resultant PeLEDs demonstrate a peak EQE of exceeding 20% at a high luminance of 120,000 cd m-2 and a half lifetime of 26 min at 11,000 cd m-2, representing the state-of-the-art inverted green electroluminescence. This work resolves the crucial issues of violent interfacial reactions and provides a strategy toward inverted green PeLEDs with outstanding performance.
Effective Surface Ligand-Concentration Tuning of Deep-Blue Luminescent FAPbBr3 Nanoplatelets with Enhanced Stability and Charge Transport

Abstract:Metal-halide perovskite-based green and red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have witnessed a rapid development because of their facile synthesis and processability; however, the blue-band emission is constrained by their unstable chemical properties and poorly conducting emitting layers. Here, we show a trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO)-mediated one-step approach to realize bright deep-blue luminescent FAPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) with enhanced stability and charge transport. The concentration of NPL surface ligands is shown to be progressively tuned via varying the amount of intermediate TOPO due to the acid-base equilibrium between protic acid and TOPO. By effectively optimizing the concentration of surface ligands, the structural integrity of NPL solids can be preserved in ambient air for a week, mainly because of the highly ordered and dense solid assembly and the reduced defects. The removal of excess organic ligands also enables the improvement of charge mobility by orders of magnitude. Ultimately, ultrapure deep-blue perovskite LEDs (439 nm) with a narrow emission width of 14 nm and a peak EQE of 0.14% are achieved at low driving voltage. Our finding expands the current understanding of surface ligand modulation in the development of pure bromide deep-blue perovskite optoelectronics.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have significant potential for application in light-emitting diodes (LED) owing to their superior optical properties. However, the dynamic instability of traditional oleic acid/amine ligands has a considerable impact on the optical and chemical properties of the surface. Additionally, one of its insulating qualities restricts the practical application of electroluminescent devices. In this case, the dual-function ligand DDA-MeS can passivate surface defects while also stabilizing chelation on QDs surface. As a result, the electrical performance of green QDs-LED devices is greatly enhanced, the external quantum efficiency is raised to 10.18%, the maximum brightness is also boosted to 8025 cd/m 2 , and the turn-on voltage is decreased to 2.5 V. This work also provides a novel strategy for the development of green LED devices with dual-function ligands that can be highly effective and bright.

Abstract:Formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr(3)) nanocrystals (NCs) demonstrate great potential in light-emitting diode (LED) applications due to their pure green emission and excellent stability. However, the abundant defects at the surface of the NCs act as charge trapping centers and significantly increase the trap-assisted nonradiative recombination channels, hampering the performance improvement of LEDs based on FAPbBr(3) NCs. Herein, a facile self-passivation strategy of the surface defects is developed by introducing excess formamidinium bromide (FABr) during the colloidal synthesis of NCs, leading to much improved photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the obtained NCs. In addition, enhanced charge transport property is measured in the assembled films owing to the simultaneously declined insulating ligands at the surface of NCs. The molar ratio of FABr and PbBr2 is rationally optimized during the synthesis of NCs and high-efficient green-emissive LEDs are fabricated with a champion current efficiency of 76.8 cd A(-1), corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 17.1%, which is among the best-performing green LEDs based on perovskite NCs so far.
