Abstract:Photon emission during contact electrification (CE) has recently been observed, which is called as CE-induced interface photon emission spectroscopy (CEIIPES). Physical mechanisms of CEIIPES are essential for interpreting the structure and electronic interactions of a contacted interface. Using the methods of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), it is confirmed theoretically that the spectrum of emitted photons is contributed from electron transfer and transition during CE. Specifically, the excited electrons from higher energy state in one material may transfer to a lower energy state of another material followed by a transition; and/or some unstable excited electrons at a higher energy level of one material may transit to a lower energy state of itself, both of which result in CEIIPES. Furthermore, the CE-induced interface absorption spectrum (CEIIAS) has been demonstrated, due to the intermolecular electron transfer excitation.

Abstract:Interfaces exist in almost all objects and processes. Investigation on the interface not only is fundamentally important but also has great application prospects. Traditionally, the interface structure is studied by electron microscopy, which cannot reflect its real structure considering the pretreated process before measurement. Monitoring the interface evolution process by these regular methods is time-consuming and unfeasible in many cases. In this perspective article, we discuss how to realize the visualizing and monitoring interface structures and dynamics by aggregation-induced emission technique, which is applicable to almost all kinds of interfaces, including gas-solid, liquid-solid, solid-solid, gas-liquid-solid, and liquid-liquid-solid. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that the circularly polarized luminescence property in prochiral aggregation-induced emission luminogens can make a great difference in this area.
Photo-induced charge transfer dynamics at interfaces in coupled quantum dot films

Abstract:Focusing on photovoltaic device working processes,as to design higher efficiency quantum dot photovoltaic device, charge transfer dynamics at interface in quantum dot films at different time scales are studied.The results of transient photocur-rent (Time of Flight/TOF)indicate charge transfer at interfaces between quantum dots and electrodes,then charge carriers re-combination occurs,the time scale for later is about 120 ns.Furthermore,by comparing single and two sizes quantum dot ploto-voltaic devices’TOF signals,we arrive at a conclusion that the contribution of interface charge transfer between different sizes quantum dots.In the end,time-resolved fluorescence spectrum is used to study interface charge transfer between quantum dots and acceptors,the results reveal that the processes occur at tens of ps.

Abstract:Monitoring of interfacial electron transfer (ET) in situ is important to understand the ET mechanism and designing efficient photocatalysts. We describe herein a mass spectrometric approach to investigate the ultrafast transfer of photoelectrons that are generated by ultraviolet irradiation on surfaces of semiconductor nanoparticles or crystalline facets. The mass spectrometric approach can not only untargetedly detect various intermediates but also monitor their reactivity through associative or dissociative photoelectron capture dissociation, as well as electron detachment dissociation of adsorbed molecules. Proton-coupled electron transfer and proton-uncoupled electron transfer with radical initiated polymerization or hydroxyl radical abstraction have been unambiguously demonstrated with the mass spectrometric approach. Active crystalline facets of titanium dioxide for photocatalytic degradation of juglone and organochlorine dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane are visualized with mass spectrometry imaging based on ion scanning and spectral reconstruction. This work provides a new technique for studying photo-electric properties of various materials.

Abstract:Electron-phonon interactions are extremely important for understanding charge transport, inelastic processes, heating, and heat dissipation in nanoscale molecular and atomic devices. In molecular electronics Inelastic Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy (IETS) has recently emerged as one of the premier methods for characterizing molecular-scale junctions and devices. This method provides a distinct chemical fingerprint for identifying molecules within a junction, and has allowed for clear demonstrations of single molecule devices, the effects of electric field on molecular orbitals, the importance of molecular configuration on conductance, as well as information about the charge transport mechanism. In this review we will discuss the use of Point Contact (PC) and IET spectroscopies on molecular and atomic systems, discuss the basic principles involved in inelastic transport for these spectroscopic methods to function, and focus on the experimental techniques involved and the important conclusions drawn from the experiments performed to date. Abstract:Abstract The photoinduced non-thermalized hot electrons at an interface play a pivotal role in determining plasmonic driven chemical events. However, understanding non-thermalized electron dynamics, which precedes electron thermalization (~125 fs), remains a grand challenge. Herein, we simultaneously captured the dynamics of both molecules and non-thermalized electrons in the MXene/molecule complexes by femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. The real-time observation allows for distinguishing non-thermalized and thermalized electron responses. Differing from the thermalized electron/heat transfer, our results reveal two non-thermalized electron dynamical pathways: (i) the non-thermalized electrons directly transfer to attached molecules at an interface within 50 fs; (ii) the non-thermalized electrons scatter at the interface within 125 fs, inducing adsorbed molecules heating. These two distinctive pathways are dependent on the irradiating wavelength and the energy difference between MXene and adsorbed molecules. This research sheds light on the fundamental mechanism and opens opportunities in photocatalysis and interfacial heat transfer theory.

Abstract:Abstract Contact electrification (CE) has been known for more than 2600 years but the nature of charge carriers and their transfer mechanisms still remain poorly understood, especially for the cases of liquid–solid CE. Here, we study the CE between liquids and solids and investigate the decay of CE charges on the solid surfaces after liquid–solid CE at different thermal conditions. The contribution of electron transfer is distinguished from that of ion transfer on the charged surfaces by using the theory of electron thermionic emission. Our study shows that there are both electron transfer and ion transfer in the liquid–solid CE. We reveal that solutes in the solution, pH value of the solution and the hydrophilicity of the solid affect the ratio of electron transfers to ion transfers. Further, we propose a two-step model of electron or/and ion transfer and demonstrate the formation of electric double-layer in liquid–solid CE.

Abstract:With the growing threat of energy crisis and the increasing need to power microelectronic devices, people are seeking potential alternative energies that can replace the conventional sources such as fossil fuels. Due to its simple structure, low cost, and high performance, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) which is based on the contact electrification has become one of the most promising candidates. Although plays a crucial role in determining the amount of charge transfer of TENG, the fundamental mechanism that underlies the charge transfer in the contact electrification of insulator-insulator contacts has still not been completely understood. In this paper, the dynamics of charge transfer in the contact electrification is investigated by observing the triboluminescence of the sliding contacts and a theoretical model is proposed for the electrification of insulator-insulator contacts. In the present "Capacitor model", the electron tunneling is assumed to be the dominating mechanism in the electrification and the driving force for the electron transfer is the contact potential difference, and thus, the electrification is considered as a charging process of the capacitor formed by the contact surfaces. The consistency between the predictions by the present model and the experiments may confirm again that the electron transfer is the dominant process in the contact electrification of insulator-insulator contacts.

Abstract:Charge transfer in transduction of light to electrical or chemical energy at heterojunctions of metals with semiconductors or semimetals is believed to occur by photogenerated hot electrons in metal undergoing incoherent internal photoemission through the heterojunction interface. Charge transfer, however, can also occur coherently by dipole coupling of electronic bands at the heterojunction interface. Microscopic physical insights into how transfer occurs can be elucidated by following the coherent polarization of the donor and acceptor states on the time scale of electronic dephasing. By time-resolved multiphoton photoemission spectroscopy (MPP), we investigate the coherent electron transfer from an interface state that forms upon chemisorption of Ag nanoclusters onto graphite to a σ symmetry interlayer band of graphite. Multidimensional MPP spectroscopy reveals a resonant two-photon transition, which dephases within 10 fs completing the coherent transfer.

Abstract:Interfacial electron transfer (IET) dynamics in 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3, 3, 3', 3'-tetramethylindodicarbocyanine (DiD) dye molecules / indium tin oxide (ITO) film system have been probed at the ensemble and single-molecule level by recording the change of fluorescence emission intensity. By comparing the difference of the external electric current (EEC) dependence of lifetime and intensity for enambles and single molecules, it is shown that the single-molecule probe can effcienly demonstrate the IET dynamics. The backward electron transfer and electron transfer of ground state induce the single molecules fluorescence quenching when an EEC is applied to ITO film.

Abstract:The underlying mechanism in contact electrification is systematically investigated between 2D MXenes and MoS2 through density functional theory and triboelectric probes. The work functions dominate the electron transfer direction, while the interfacial potential barrier and the work function difference together modulate the amount of transferred electron. The electron transfer will occur at the attractive force region due to the quantum tunneling. Contact electrification (triboelectrification) (CE) is a universal phenomenon in ambient environment and has been recorded for more than 2600 years. Nonetheless, the intrinsic mechanism of CE still remains controversial. Herein, based on first‐principles theory, the underlying mechanism in CE is systematically investigated between metallic MXenes and semiconductive MoS2. The results show that the work functions of contacting materials dominate the direction of electron transfer during CE process. That is, the electron will be transferred from the material with low work function to the one with high work function. The theoretical prediction is verified experimentally through investigating triboelectric probes based on MXenes and MoS2 nanomaterials. Additionally, it is noted that the interfacial potential barrier and the work function difference together modulate the amount of transferred electron. Electron transfer mainly occurs in the repulsive forces region where the interaction distance between the two materials is shorter than the normal bonding length. The quantum calculation results agree well with the Wang transition theory. Furthermore, it is also noticed that, due to the wave‐particle duality of electron, electron transfer will obviously occur at the attractive force region when the two contacting materials exhibit a larger work function difference.

Abstract:Contact electrification exists everywhere and between every phase of matter. However, its mechanism still remains to be studied. The recent triboelectric nanogenerator serves as a probe and provides some new clues about the mechanism present in solid–solid, solid–liquid, and liquid–liquid contact electrification. The gas–solid model still remains to be exploited. Here, we investigated the contact electrification between gases and solids based on the single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator. Our work shows that the amount of transferred charges between gas and solid particles increases with surface area, movement distance, and initial charges of particle increase. Furthermore, we find that the initial charges on the particle surface can attract more polar molecules and enhance gas collisions. Since ions in gas–solid contact are rare, we speculate that gas–solid contact electrification is mainly based on electron transfer. Further, we propose a theoretical model of gas–solid contact electrification involving the gas collision model and initial charges of the particle. Our study may have great significance to the gas–solid interface chemistry.

Abstract:Two interfaces with opposite orientations of the built-in electric field, nanoporous TiO2 film/FTO electrode and nanoporous TiO2 film/semitransparent Pt substrate, were constructed. The separation and transport of photo-induced charge carriers in the two systems of nanoporous TiO2/conductive substrate were studied by the transient photovoltage technique. Various transient photovoltage responses were obtained when the laser beam was incident from the surface of the nanoporous TiO2 film (top illumination) or the TiO2/substrate interface (bottom illumination). A linear and a logarithmic dependence of the photovoltage amplitude on the excitation level were observed for top illumination and bottom illumination, respectively. The results indicate that diffusion is the major way for the separation of charge carriers in the nanoporous TiO2 film and that the excess carriers were separated by drift under the built-in electric field at the TiO2/substrate interfaces.

Abstract:The pursuit of nanoscale photonics and molecular optoelectronics has stimulated a lot of interests in scanning tunneling microscope (STM) induced molecular emission. In this work, we have introduced a full quantum mechanical approach instead of the previous semiclassical theory to consider the quantized surface plasmon modes in this system. By considering the mutual interactions between a single molecule and the quantized surface plasmon, we have studied the molecular electroluminescence from STM tunnel junctions. Due to the coupling to the surface plasmons, the spontaneous emission rate and the fluorescence intensity of the molecule are both enormously enhanced. In particular, we show that when the radiative decay rate becomes comparable to the vibrational damping rate, hot-electroluminescence can be observed. All these findings are believed to be instructive for further developments of both molecular electronics and photonics.

Abstract:Contact electrification (CE) has been known for thousands of years, but its most basic foundations remain poorly understood. Here, the light emission (i.e., triboluminescence, TL) during sliding contacts is investigated to reveal the dynamics of charge transfer in electrification between dielectric surfaces. To explain the variation with the sliding speed of the observed TL intensity, a “Capacitor model” is proposed for the electrification, indicating that the electron transfer through tunneling between contacting surfaces driven by the contact potential difference is the dominant mechanism, and thus CE can be considered as the charging process of a capacitor formed by the contacting surfaces. This study may provide a new perspective for understanding the charge transfer mechanism in CE of insulator-insulator contacts.

Abstract:Inelastic electron transport in quantum dot systems is studied via the hierarchical equations of motion combining a small polaron transformation approach, with differential conductance dI/dV similar to V characteristics being evaluated accurately at the cotunneling level. We observe (i) the peak feature of phonon emission Franck-Condon sidebands to the zero-phonon peaks of both polaron and bipolaron in sequential electron transport; (ii) phonon absorption peaks occurring if the phonon temperature is sufficiently higher than that of the carrier electron; and (iii) the step feature of Raman sidebands in the cotunneling transport regime. We also evaluate the polaron transport response to a continuous-wave irradiation that induces bias-voltage oscillation. We observe, consistent with experimental results, that (iv) the photon-phonon-assisted tunneling enhances phonon absorptions while suppressing emissions. As the phonon absorption (emission) is associated with the process of absorbing (emitting) energy from (to) the phonon environment, an alternating or tailored field applied to contacts could be a practical means of cooling the mesoscopic quantum-transport device.

Abstract:<p>The phenomenon of contact electrification (CE) has been known for thousands of years, but the nature of the charge carriers and their transfer mechanisms are still under debate. Here, the CE and triboelectric charging process are studied for a metal–dielectric case at different thermal conditions by using atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy. The charge transfer process at the nanoscale is found to follow the modified thermionic‐emission model. In particular, the focus here is on the effect of a temperature difference between two contacting materials on the CE. It is revealed that hotter solids tend to receive positive triboelectric charges, while cooler solids tend to be negatively charged, which suggests that the temperature‐difference‐induced charge transfer can be attributed to the thermionic‐emission effect, in which the electrons are thermally excited and transfer from a hotter surface to a cooler one. Further, a thermionic‐emission band‐structure model is proposed to describe the electron transfer between two solids at different temperatures. The findings also suggest that CE can occur between two identical materials owing to the existence of a local temperature difference arising from the nanoscale rubbing of surfaces with different curvatures/roughness.</p>
