Abstract:A major challenge in condensed matter physics is active control of quantum phases. Dynamic control with pulsed electromagnetic fields can overcome energetic barriers enabling access to transient or metastable states that are not thermally accessible. Here we demonstrate strain-engineered tuning of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 into an emergent charge-ordered insulating phase with extreme photo-susceptibility where even a single optical pulse can initiate a transition to a long-lived metastable hidden metallic phase. Comprehensive single-shot pulsed excitation measurements demonstrate that the transition is cooperative and ultrafast, requiring a critical absorbed photon density to activate local charge excitations that mediate magnetic-lattice coupling that, in turn, stabilize the metallic phase. These results reveal that strain engineering can tune emergent functionality towards proximal macroscopic states to enable dynamic ultrafast optical phase switching and control.

Abstract:Abstract Ultrafast photoinduced phase transitions at room temperature, driven by a single laser shot and persisting long after stimuli, represent emerging routes for ultrafast control over materials’ properties. Time-resolved studies provide fundamental mechanistic insight into far-from-equilibrium electronic and structural dynamics. Here we study the photoinduced phase transformation of the Rb 0.94 Mn 0.94 Co 0.06 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.98 material, designed to exhibit a 75 K wide thermal hysteresis around room temperature between Mn III Fe II tetragonal and Mn II Fe III cubic phases. We developed a specific powder sample streaming technique to monitor by ultrafast X-ray diffraction the structural and symmetry changes. We show that the photoinduced polarons expand the lattice, while the tetragonal-to-cubic photoinduced phase transition occurs within 100 ps above threshold fluence. These results are rationalized within the framework of the Landau theory of phase transition as an elastically-driven and cooperative process. We foresee broad applications of the streaming powder technique to study non-reversible and ultrafast dynamics.

Abstract:Ultrafast control of material physical properties represents a rapidly developing field in condensed matter physics. Yet, accessing the long-lived photoinduced electronic states is still in its early stages, especially with respect to an insulator to metal phase transition. Here, by combining transport measurement with ultrashort photoexcitation and coherent phonon spectroscopy, we report on photoinduced multistage phase transitions in Ta2NiSe5. Upon excitation by weak pulse intensity, the system is triggered to a short-lived state accompanied by a structural change. Further increasing the excitation intensity beyond a threshold, a photoinduced steady new state is achieved where the resistivity drops by more than four orders at temperature 50 K. This new state is thermally stable up to at least 350 K and exhibits a lattice structure different from any of the thermally accessible equilibrium states. Transmission electron microscopy reveals an in-chain Ta atom displacement in the photoinduced new structure phase. We also found that nano-sheet samples with the thickness less than the optical penetration depth are required for attaining a complete transition.
Beyond the molecular movie: dynamics of bands and bonds during a photo-induced phase transition

Abstract:Ultrafast non-equilibrium dynamics offer a route to study the microscopic interactions that govern macroscopic behavior. In particular, photo-induced phase transitions (PIPTs) in solids provide a test case for how forces, and the resulting atomic motion along a reaction coordinate, originate from a non-equilibrium population of excited electronic states. Utilizing femtosecond photoemission we obtain access to the transient electronic structure during an ultrafast PIPT in a model system: indium nanowires on a silicon(111) surface. We uncover a detailed reaction pathway, allowing a direct comparison with the dynamics predicted by ab initio simulations. This further reveals the crucial role played by localized photo-holes in shaping the potential energy landscape, and enables a combined momentum and real space description of PIPTs, including the ultrafast formation of chemical bonds.

Abstract:The transition between different states in manganites can be driven by various external stimuli. Controlling these transitions with light opens the possibility to investigate the microscopic path through which they evolve. We performed femtosecond (fs) transmission electron microscopy on a bi-layered manganite to study its response to ultrafast photoexcitation. We show that a photoinduced temperature jump launches a pressure wave that provokes coherent oscillations of the lattice parameters, detected via ultrafast electron diffraction. Their impact on the electronic structure are monitored via ultrafast electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), revealing the dynamics of the different orbitals in response to specific structural distortions.

Abstract:Recent development of ultrashort laser pulses allows for optical control of structural and electronic properties of complex quantum materials. The layered transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe2, which can crystalize into several different structures with distinct topological and electronic properties, provides possibilities to control or switch between different phases. In this study we report a photo-induced sub-picosecond structural transition between the type-II Weyl semimetal phase and normal semimetal phase in bulk crystalline MoTe2 by using ultrafast pump-probe and time-resolved second harmonic generation spectroscopy. The phase transition is most clearly characterized by the dramatic change of the shear oscillation mode and the intensity loss of second harmonic generation. This work opens up new possibilities for ultrafast manipulation of the topological properties of solids, enabling potentially practical applications for topological switch device with ultrafast excitations.

Abstract:By means of Monte Carlo simulations on a kinetic model, we demonstrate that the efficiency of a photoinduced phase change can in general be enhanced drastically by using a superstructure of an appropriate combination of two components. This is due to the accelerated nucleation of converted domains in the structural blocks relatively close to local instability. The present mechanism provides a general guideline on the design of photocontrollable materials with potential applications for memory and storage devices.

Abstract:A phase-change nanolithography technique is developed to fabricate up to millions of two-/three-dimensional nanostructures (similar to 50 nm) over a large area at a high speed by combining femtosecond laser, microlens array, and wet etching process. Near-field scanning optical microscopy, electrical force microscopy, and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize optical and electrical properties of crystalline and amorphous states, respectively. Different reactions of both amorphous and crystalline areas in phase-change film to alkaline solution are demonstrated. Multiphoton absorption and ultrashort pulse contribute to nanostructure generation. This method opens up a route for nanodevice fabrication with phase-change material.
From Ultrafast Photoinduced Small Polarons to Cooperative and Macroscopic Charge‐Transfer Phase Transition

Abstract:We study by femtosecond infrared spectroscopy the ultrafast and persistent photoinduced phase transition of the Rb0.94Mn0.94Co0.06[Fe(CN)6]0.98∙0.2H2O material, induced at room temperature by a single laser shot. This system exhibits a charge-transfer based phase transition with a 75 K wide thermal hysteresis, centred at room temperature, from the low temperature Mn3+−N−C−Fe2+ tetragonal phase to the high temperature Mn2+−N−C−Fe3+ cubic phase. At room temperature, the photoinduced phase transition is persistent. However, the out-of-equilibrium dynamics leading to this phase is multi-scale. Femtosecond infrared spectroscopy, particularly sensitive to local reorganizations through the evolution of the frequency of the N−C vibration modes with the different characteristic electronic states, reveals that at low laser fluence and on short time scale, the photoexcitation of the Mn3+−N−C−Fe2+ phase creates small charge-transfer polarons [Mn2+−N−C−Fe3+]* within ≃ 250 fs. The local trapping of photoinduced intermetallic charge-transfer is characterized by the appearance of a polaronic infrared band, due to the surrounding Mn2+−N−C−Fe2+ species. Above a threshold fluence, when a critical fraction of small CT-polarons is reached, the macroscopic phase transition to the persistent Mn2+−N−C−Fe3+ cubic phase occurs within ≃ 100 ps. This non-linear photo-response results from elastic cooperativity, intrinsic to a switchable lattice and reminiscent of a feedback mechanism.

Abstract:Light, acting as an external stimulus to induce various intriguing phenomena ranging from photovoltaics to photoinduced catalysis, exerts prominent effects in strongly correlated systems. It would be of particular interest to investigate photon-induced emerging phenomena in spatially confined strongly correlated systems, which are important for applications of these materials in future electronic devices. Colossal magnetoresistive manganites materials offer an ideal platform for such study due to their sensitivity to photo-excitation. Here, we fabricated 900 nm wide La0.325Pr0.3Ca0.375MnO3 strips, whose width is comparable to the size of the electronic phase separation (EPS) domains in this system. We observed the photoinduced critical fluctuations in the strips, where abrupt resistivity jumps occurred upon photoinduced phase transition depending sensitively on the light intensity. Based on the microscopic views of the EPS domains under photoexcitation, we conclude that such photo-induced resistivity fluctuations originate from the photoinduced phase fluctuations of individual EPS domains when their size becomes comparable to the strip width.

Abstract:Abstract Ultrashort laser pulses have been utilized to dynamically drive phase transitions in correlated quantum materials. Of particular interest is whether phases not achievable in thermal equilibrium can be induced in complex oxides with intricately coupled lattice, electron and spin degrees of freedom. Here, we tracked atomic motions in LaMnO 3 following photoexcitation with MeV ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV-UED) technique. We found that the light excited state exhibits numerous signatures different from thermal equilibrium ones, including nearly conserved Bragg intensities, strongly suppressed La cation and oxygen anion displacements, and the long-range lattice orthorhombicity evolution. Furthermore, using first-principles calculations, we predict that the ferromagnetic ordering and conductivity are both enhanced upon laser excitation due to the reduction of the lattice orthorhombicity. This work benefits from recent advance in fabrication of membrane films with high epitaxial quality and in MeV-UED with large momentum space access and high temporal resolution.

Abstract:The coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases and their role in the photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition in Pr1-xCax MnO3 are revealed via ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction and broadband optical reflectivity measurements. The antiferromagnetic scattering signal and ferromagnetically sensitive reflectivity measurements show similar, strongly temperature dependent time scales. We attribute the common dynamics to an activation barrier between the equilibrium insulating phase and the photoinduced metallic phase related to interactions between the phase-separated ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic insulating phases.

Abstract:Important advances have recently been made in the search for materials with complex multi-phase landscapes that host photoinduced metastable collective states with exotic functionalities. In almost all cases so far, the desired phases are accessed by exploiting light-matter interactions via the imaginary part of the dielectric function through above-bandgap or resonant mode excitation. Nonresonant Raman excitation of coherent modes has been experimentally observed and proposed for dynamic material control, but the resulting atomic excursion has been limited to perturbative levels. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to overcome this challenge by employing nonresonant ultrashort pulses with low photon energies well below the bandgap. Using mid-infrared pulses, we induce ferroelectric reversal in lithium niobate and phase switching in tin selenide and characterize the large-amplitude mode displacements through femtosecond Raman scattering, second harmonic generation, and x-ray diffraction. This approach, validated by first-principle calculations, defines a novel method for synthesizing hidden phases with unique functional properties and manipulating complex energy landscapes at reduced energy consumption and ultrafast speeds.

Abstract:We investigate transient nanotextured heterogeneity in vanadium dioxide (VO<sub>2</sub>) thin films during a light-induced insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). Time-resolved scanning near-field optical microscopy (Tr-SNOM) is used to study VO<sub>2</sub> across a wide parameter space of infrared frequencies, picosecond time scales, and elevated steady-state temperatures with nanoscale spatial resolution. Room temperature, steady-state, phonon enhanced nano-optical contrast reveals preexisting "hidden" disorder. The observed contrast is associated with inequivalent twin domain structures. Upon thermal or optical initiation of the IMT, coexisting metallic and insulating regions are observed. Correlations between the transient and steady-state nano-optical textures reveal that heterogeneous nucleation is partially anchored to twin domain interfaces and grain boundaries. Ultrafast nanoscopic dynamics enable quantification of the growth rate and bound the nucleation rate. Finally, we deterministically anchor photoinduced nucleation to predefined nanoscopic regions by locally enhancing the electric field of pump radiation using nanoantennas and monitor the on-demand emergent metallicity in space and time.

X-ray Nano-imaging of a Heterogeneous Structural Phase Transition in V2O3

Abstract:Controlling the Mott transition through strain engineering is crucial for advancing the development and application of memristive and neuromorphic computing devices. Yet, Mott insulators are heterogeneous due to intrinsic phase boundaries and extrinsic defects, posing significant challenges to fully understanding the impact of local microscopic distortions on the local Mott transition. Addressing these challenges demands structural characterizations at the relevant length scale. Here, using a synchrotron-based scanning X-ray nanoprobe, we studied the real-space structural heterogeneity during the structural phase transition in a V2O3 thin film. Through temperature-dependent metal-insulator phase coexistence mapping, we report a variation in the local transition temperature of up to 7 K across the film and the presence of the transition hysteresis at the nanoscale. Furthermore, a detailed quantitative analysis demonstrates that the spatial heterogeneity of the transition is closely tied to the tilting of crystallographic planes in the pure insulating phase. Our work highlights the impact of local heterogeneity on the Mott transition and lays the groundwork for future innovations in harnessing strain heterogeneity within Mott systems for the next-generation computational technologies.

Abstract:The Rb0.94Mn0.94Co0.06[Fe(CN)6]0.98 material was designed to exhibit a 75 K wide thermal hysteresis around room temperature, associated with a bistability between the low temperature MnIIIFeII tetragonal phase and the high temperature MnIIFeIII cubic phase. We have recently shown that a single laser pulse can be used to drive, at room temperature, the photoinduced phase transition from the MnIIIFeII tetragonal phase to the MnIIFeIII cubic phase. By using a specific powder sample streaming technique, we could monitor by time‐resolved X‐ray diffraction how the ultrafast out‐of‐equilibrium dynamics, imposed by the structural relaxation around the local photoinduced charge transfer, changes with the fluence of the laser pulse. In this paper we present a detailed structural analysis of the crystalline reorganizations associated with the charge‐transfer in different regimes of photoexcitation. In the low excitation polaronic regime, the photoinduced charge transfer is local and accompanied by anisotropic distortion of the Mn coordination sphere and of the tetragonal lattice. In the high excitation regime, a macroscopic and cooperative charge‐transfer phase transition occurs towards the cubic lattice, where the coordination around the Mn reaches octahedral symmetry.

Dynamics of a Persistent Insulator-to-Metal Transition in Strained Manganite Films

Abstract:Transition metal oxides possess complex free energy surfaces with competing degrees of freedom. Photoexcitation allows shaping of such rich energy landscapes. In epitaxially strained $\mathrm{La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3}$, optical excitation with a sub-100 fs pulse above $2\ \mathrm{mJ/cm^2}$ leads to a persistent metallic phase below 100 K. Using single-shot optical and terahertz spectroscopy, we show that this phase transition is a multi-step process. We conclude that the phase transition is driven by partial charge order melting, followed by growth of the persistent metallic phase on longer timescales. A time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model can describe the fast dynamics of the reflectivity, followed by longer timescale in-growth of the metallic phase.

Photoinduced Phase Transition in Infinite‐Layer Nickelates (small 43/2023)
