Abstract:Understanding the internal spin structure of the nucleon still remains a challenge in strong interaction physics. Transversity, which describes the transverse spin structure of quarks in a transversely polarized proton, is poorly constrained by experimental data. Since it is chiral-odd, it can only be accessed through channels that couple to other chiral-odd distributions, like the Collins fragmentation functions (so-called Collins effect) or the interference fragmentation functions. Recently, a detailed calculation using the soft-collinear effective theory found that the Collins effect in $pp$ collisions involves a mixture of collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. The Collins effect provides a direct probe to the Collins fragmentation function and enables testing of its evolution, universality and factorization breaking in the transverse momentum dependent formalism. In 2018, STAR published the first measurements of Collins asymmetries for charged pions in jets in polarized $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV based on data taken during 2011. These measurements probe $Q^2$ scales one to two orders of magnitude larger than similar measurements in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and the results are consistent with predictions based on global analyses of $e^{+}e^{-}$ and SIDIS data. In 2012 and 2015, STAR collected $\sim$14 $\mathrm{pb^{-1}}$ and $\sim$52 $\mathrm{pb^{-1}}$ of transversely polarized $pp$ data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV, respectively. These datasets provide the most precise measurement of the Collins effect in 200 GeV $pp$ collisions to date, especially at the quark momentum fractions $0.1 \le x \le 0.4$. These proceedings present the preliminary results for Collins asymmetries of identified pions in jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV and comparisons to theory predictions.

Heavy Quarkonium Production at Collider Energies: Partonic Cross Section and Polarization

Abstract:We calculate the O(alpha(3)(s)) short-distance, QCD collinear-factorized coefficient functions for all partonic channels that include the production of a heavy quark pair at short distances. This provides the first power correction to the collinear-factorized inclusive hadronic production of heavy quarkonia at large transverse momentum, pT, including the full leading-order perturbative contributions to the production of heavy quark pairs in all color and spin states employed in NRQCD treatments of this process. We discuss the role of the first power correction in the production rates and the polarizations of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The consistency of QCD collinear factorization and nonrelativistic QCD factorization applied to heavy quarkonium production is also discussed.

Abstract:The experimental data of the global polarization of Λ hyperon, ϕ and K*0 vector mesons in high-energy heavy ion collision confirm the new phenomenon of global polarization of hot-dense QCD matter, which has attracted extensive attention from researchers and has become a new hot research direction in the frontier of high-energy nuclear physics. This paper reviews the recent global polarization measurements. We focus on the global polarization measurements of Λ hyperon and ϕ, K*0 mesons, carried out by the solenoidal tracker detector (STAR) collaboration group at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at its Phase I of Beam Energy Scan program, and extend to the global polarization measurements containing multiple strange quark particles, such as Ξ, Ω and the local polarization studies of Λ along the beam direction. In the paper, we also briefly comment on the measurements at higher energy from the large hadron collider (LHC) and at very low energy in HADES experiment. In the end of the paper, the physical information given by these experimental results is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The STAR experiment at RHIC is carrying out a comprehensive high-energy spin physics program to understand the internal structure and dynamics of the proton in polarized proton-proton collisions at = 200 GeV and = 500/510 GeV. STAR has the capability, with nearly full azimuthal coverage, to reconstruct leptons, hadrons and jets in the mid-rapidity region (|η| < 1). The results for inclusive jet longitudinal double spin asymmetries taken during the 2009 RHIC run indicate the first non-zero gluon contribution (Δg(x,Q2)/g(x,Q2)) to the proton spin for 0.05 < x < 1 (Bjorken-x: momentum fraction of partons). Recent longitudinal single-spin asymmetry measurements of W+/− bosons at = 500/510 GeV in polarized proton-proton collisions provide a direct probe of the polarized anti-u and anti-d quark distributions (Δū(x, Q2), Δ(x, Q2)). These results better constrain the polarized gluon and sea quark distributions of the proton in the RHIC sensitive kinematic region. Future measurements with continuing high energy polarized proton-proton run at RHIC and detector upgrade will explore the gluonic contribution to the proton spin in extended range.

Abstract:We calculate the inclusive production of a polarized or hyperon from the single longitudinally polarized proton and proton ( pp ) collision at RHIC. By comparing the data reported by the STAR Collaboration, we find that this process is sensitive to the polarization of strange and antistrange quarks of the proton in the experimental range. By introducing asymmetric coefficients with the minimization of χ ^2 , we further identify the asymmetry of the polarized strange–antistrange quarks in the proton sea and find that the first moment is s ≈ - 0.025± 0.019 for strange quark and s̅≈ - 0.001± 0.012 for antistrange quark, with central values agreeing with the light-cone meson–baryon fluctuation model prediction, the recent lattice QCD determination of strangeness polarization and results from a global QCD analysis given by the Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum (JAM) Collaboration.

Abstract:The STAR Collaboration is performing a wide range of measurements to determine the gluon helicity distribution in the proton. Gluon-gluon and quark-gluon scattering dominate jet production in proton-proton collisions at RHIC, so the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, for jet production places significant constraints on the gluon polarization in the proton. In recent years STAR has recorded large longitudinally polarized $pp$ data sets at both $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and $510$ GeV. The 2009 STAR inclusive jet $A_{LL}$ measurements at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV show the first experimental evidence of non-zero gluon polarization over the Bjorken-$x$ range, $x > 0.05$. Furthermore, data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV during the 2012 and 2013 RHIC runs allow access to the gluon polarization at lower $x$. In this talk, I will present the final results of the 2009 inclusive jet $A_{LL}$ measurement at $200$ GeV, the analysis status of the 2012 inclusive jet $A_{LL}$ measurement at $510$ GeV, and the status of di-jet and other STAR measurements that are sensitive to gluon polarization.

Recent STAR Measurements to Constrain the Polarized Gluon Distribution Function of the Proton

Abstract:The STAR experiment has been studying the spin structure of the proton, using the unique high-energy polarized proton collider, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The kinematic coverage at STAR allows accessing gluons because quark-gluon and gluon-gluon scatterings dominate particle production at low and medium transverse momenta. The polarized gluon distribution function can be constrained by measuring the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ($A_{LL}$) of jet production and neutral pions. Global QCD analyses of polarized parton distribution functions, which include the 2009 $A_{LL}$ STAR results for inclusive jet production at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, provide evidence of a non-zero gluon polarization in the measured range of partonic momentum fraction $x > 0.05$. We present the status of the latest measurements of $A_{LL}$ at STAR, for inclusive jet and dijet production at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV and 200 GeV collected in 2013 and 2015 respectively, both at mid-rapidity ($|\eta|<0.9$). The large data sample taken during these years will improve the precision of our knowledge about the proton spin structure while the increased center of mass energy allows probing the polarized gluon distribution function at smaller partonic momentum fraction. Furthermore, we present measurements of $A_{LL}$ for neutral pions at forward rapidity ($2.65<\eta<3.9$) collected during 2012 and 2013 that also allow reaching lower partonic momentum fraction. We compare these measurements with the latest global analyses.

Abstract:We study the global polarization of spin-$3/2$ hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We show in particular that the global tensor polarizations of rank two or three for spin-$3/2$ hadrons are sensitive to the local two or three quark spin correlations respectively in the quark gluon plasma produced in the collision processes. We present the relationships between these measurable tensor polarizations and quark spin correlations in the quark matter system.

Abstract:In non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions,the colliding nuclear system possesses a huge global orbital angular momentum in the direction opposite to the normal of the reaction plane.Due to the spin-orbit coupling in strong interaction,such a huge orbital angular momentum leads to a global spin polarization of the quark matter system produced in the collision process.The global polarization effect in high energy heavy ion collisions was first predicted theoretically and confirmed by STAR experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Laboratory.The discovery has attracted much attention to the study of spin effects in heavy ion collision and leads to a new direction in high energy heavy ion physics) Spin Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions.In this paper,we briefly review the original ideas,the calculation methods,the main results and recent theoretical developments in last years.First,we present a short discussion of the spin-orbit coupling which is an intrinsic property for a relativistic fermionic quantum system.Then we review how the global orbital angular momentum can be generated innon-central heavy ion collisions and how the global orbital angular momentum can be transferred to the local orbital angular momentum distribution in two limit model|Landan fireball model and Bjorken scaling model.After that,we review how we can describe the scattering process with initial local orbital angular momentum in the formalism of scattering cross section in impact parameter space and how we calculate the polarization of the quarks and antiquarks in quark gluon plasma produced in non-central heavy ion collisions after single or multiple scattering.We also give a brief review on how the global polarization can be predicted from the formalism of relativistic hydrodynamics with the generalized Cooper-Frye formula with spin.Finally,we discuss how the quark’s polarization can be transferred to the final hadron’s polarization.We focus on the hyperon’s polarization and vector meson’s spin alignment produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:Data taken over the last several years have demonstrated that RHIC has created a hot, dense medium with partonic degrees of freedom. Identified particle spectra at high transverse momentum ($p_T$) and heavy flavor are thought to be well calibrated probes thus serve as ideal tools to study the properties of the medium. We present $p_T$ distributions of particle ratios in p+p collisions from STAR experiment to understand the particle production mechanisms. These measurements will also constrain fragmentation functions in hadron-hardon collisions. In heavy ion collsions, we highlight: 1) recent measurements of strange hadrons and heavy flavor decay electrons up to high $p_T$ to study jet interaction with the medium and explore partonic energy loss mechanisms; and 2) $\Upsilon$ and high $p_T$ $J/\psi$ measurements to study the effect of color screening and other possible production mechanisms.

Abstract:The STAR Collaboration has measured the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for inclusive jet production in polarized p+p collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The results set significant new constraints on the gluon polarization within the nucleon. Future measurements of asymmetries for di-jet production will provide direct access to the momentum dependence of the gluon polarization, Delta g(x,Q^2).

Azimuthal angular correlations in lepton pair production in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions

Abstract:The coherent photons induced by relativistic heavy ions are highly linearly polarized, in close analogy to the linear polarization of gluons in a large nucleus. We proposed to measure the photon polarization through azimuthal asymmetries in dilepton production in ultra-peripheral collisions. Our prediction for the asymmetries were soon confirmed by the STAR experiment with high precision. We refined our analysis recently by including the final state soft photon radiation effect beyond the double leading logarithm approximation. The azimuthal asymmetries and acoplanarity at relatively high transverse momentum provide unique opportunities to test the resummation formalism thanks to the extremely high photon flux in UPCs. Our results clearly show the feasibility to access the sub-leading resummation effects in UPCs at the RHIC and LHC.

Abstract:Quarks produced in the early stage of noncentral heavy-ion collisions could develop a global spin polarization along the opposite direction of the reaction plane due to the spin-orbital coupling via parton interaction in a medium that has finite longitudinal flow shear along the direction of the impact parameter. We study how such polarization evolves via multiple scattering in a viscous quark-gluon plasma with an initial laminar flow. The final polarization is found to be sensitive to the viscosity and the initial shear of local longitudinal flow.
Polarized Antimatter in the Proton from Global QCD Analysis

Abstract:We present the first simultaneous global QCD analysis of spin-dependent parton distribution functions alongside their spin-averaged counterparts and pion, kaon, and unidentified hadron fragmentation functions. This analysis includes all data relevant for constraining the polarized light quark sea asymmetry $\Delta \bar{u} - \Delta \bar{d}$, in particular the latest polarized $W$-lepton production data from the STAR collaboration at RHIC and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data from COMPASS, allowing the most robust extraction available with minimal theoretical assumptions. We also extract a self-consistent set of antiquark polarization ratios $\Delta \bar{u}/\bar{u}$ and $\Delta \bar{d}/\bar{d}$ and determine the signs of the truncated contributions to the proton spin from the light antiquarks.

Imaging the structure of atomic nuclei in high-energy nuclear collisions from STAR experiment

Abstract:In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the extractions of properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) are hindered by a limited understanding of its initial conditions, where the nuclear structure of the colliding ions play a significant role. In these proceedings, we present the first quantitative demonstration using ``collective flow assisted nuclear shape imaging" method to extract the quadrupole deformation and triaxiality from $^{238}$U using data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We achieve this by comparing bulk observables in $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U collisions with nearly spherical $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions. A similar comparative measurement performed in collisions of $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr, suggests the presence of moderate quadrupole deformation of $^{96}$Ru, large octupole deformation of $^{96}$Zr, as well as an apparent neutron skin difference between these two species. The prospect of this nuclear shape imaging method as a novel tool for the study of nuclear structure is also elaborated.

Recent results from STAR for parton distribution functions at low and high $x$ in proton-proton collisions

Abstract:According to perturbative quantum chromodynamic calculations, in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $~200 and 510 GeV studied at RHIC, jet production in mid-pseudorapidity, $|\eta| <$ 1, is dominated by quark-gluon and gluon-gluon scattering processes. Therefore jets at RHIC are direct probes of the gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) for momentum fractions 0.01 $<x<$ 0.5. Moreover, $W$ boson cross section ratio, $\sigma(W^+)/\sigma(W^-)$, in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 510$~GeV, is an effective tool to explore anti-quark PDFs, $\bar{d}/\bar{u}$. Last but not least, di-$\pi^{0}$ correlation in forward pseudorapidity, $2.6 < \eta <4.0$, is an important indication of the non-linear gluon dynamics at low $x$ where the gluon density is high in protons and nuclei. In this proceeding, we present recent STAR results of mid-pseudorapidity inclusive jet cross-sections at $\sqrt{s} =$~200 and 510 GeV in $pp$ collisions, $W$ boson cross-section ratios at $\sqrt{s} = 510$~GeV in $pp$ collisions, and forward di-$\pi^0$ correlations in $pp$, $p\textrm{Al}$ and $p\textrm{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{\tiny NN}}} = 200$~GeV.

Recent Cold QCD Results from STAR

Abstract:Understanding the origin of transverse single-spin asymmetries is a long-standing challenge in strong interaction physics. Recent precise measurements of the azimuthal distribution of charged pions in jets from STAR have shed new light on the spin momentum correlations within the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) formalism. This measurement, particularly sensitive to the Collins effect, correlates the quark transversity with the Collins fragmentation functions, elucidating the spin-dependent fragmentation process. Moreover, similar measurements involving kaons and protons, which have unique quark compositions, provide vital insights into the flavor-dependent spin dynamics of the parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions. These studies are crucial for developing a more comprehensive understanding of nucleon spin structure. In these proceedings, selection of the recent Cold QCD STAR results are presented, focusing on the asymmetries for charged kaons and protons in jets from transversely polarized $pp$ data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV.
