History and Overview

Abstract:We construct a number of sculptures, each based on a geometric design native to the three-dimensional sphere. Using stereographic projection we transfer the design from the three-sphere to ordinary Euclidean space. All of the sculptures are then fabricated by the 3D printing service Shapeways.

Abstract:This paper presents a framework for expressing free-hand sketching in 3D for conceptual design input. In the framework, sketch outlines will be recognized as formal rigid shapes first. Then under a group of gestures and DFAs'(deterministic finite automata) control, the framework can express user's free sketching intents freely. Based on this framework, we implemented a sketch-based 3D prototype system supporting conceptual designs. User can easily and rapidly create 3D objects such as hexahedron, sphere, cone, extrusion, swept body, revolved body, lofted body and their assemblies by sketching and gestures.

Abstract:This paper presents some works on the configuration in spatial structures. To better satisfy architecture and engineering requirements, the paper introduces a technique of reconstructing free-style 3D objects with grid space structures. With this technique, unregular and complex configurations can be easily modeled, which has a great potential in modeling of sculptures and bionic structures. Then several new types of deployable structures, which are based on linkage mechanisms including Bricard linkages and Double Chain linkages, are proposed. The kinetic behavior of these deployable structures is investigated by geometrical analysis. And their possible applications in retractable roofs are also explored. Finally, the paper proposes a practical application of structures with changeable configurations - a novelty erection technology based on expandable mechanisms. Throughout the paper, several theories and methods such as B-spline interpolation, Euclid geometry method, which provide foundations for the above-mentioned contents, are also presented.

Abstract:The S 2 ×R geometry is derived by direct product of the spherical plane S 2 and the real line R. In [9] the third author has determined the geodesic curves, geodesic balls of S 2 ×R space, computed their volume and defined the notion of the geodesic ball packing and its density. Moreover, he has developed a procedure to determine the density of the geodesic ball packing for generalized Coxeter space groups of S 2 ×R and applied this algorithm to them. E. MOLN ´ AR showed in [3], that the homogeneous 3-spaces have a unified interpretation in the projective 3-sphere PS 3 (V 4 ,V 4, R). In our work we shall use this projective model of S 2 ×R geometry and in this manner the geodesic lines, geodesic spheres can be visualized on the Euclidean screen of computer. Furthermore, we shall define the notion of the equidistant surface to two points, determine its equation and visualize it in some cases. We shall also show a possible way of making the computation simpler and obtain the equation of an equidistant surface with more possible geometric meaning. The pictures were made by the Wolfram Mathematica software.

Abstract:Sculptors often deviate from geometric accuracy in order to enhance the appearance of their sculpture. These subtle stylizations may emphasize anatomy, draw the viewer's focus to characteristic features of the subject, or symbolize textures that might not be accurately reproduced in a particular sculptural medium, while still retaining fidelity to the unique proportions of an individual. In this work we demonstrate an interactive system for enhancing face geometry using a class of stylizations based on visual decomposition into abstract semantic regions, which we call sculptural abstraction. We propose an interactive two-scale optimization framework for stylization based on sculptural abstraction, allowing real-time adjustment of both global and local parameters. We demonstrate this system's effectiveness in enhancing physical 3D prints of scans from various sources.

Abstract:We study applications of 3D printing to the broad goal of understanding how mathematical objects vary continuously in families. To do so, we model the varying parameter as the vertical axis of a 3D print, introducing the notion of a static animation: a 3D printed object each of whose layers is a member of the continuously deforming family. We survey examples and draw connections to algebraic geometry, complex dynamics, chaos theory, and more. We also include a detailed tutorial (with accompanying code and files) so that the reader can create static animations of their own.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe development of additive manufacturing (AM) makes it possible to manufacture models with infill microstructures. Studies regarding microstructures that can alternating material properties have emerged. However, existing microstructure designs have many limitations for makers. Drawing inspiration from minimal surface structure, we demo a quickly designed and low-cost method to design and manufacture elastic structures with the flexibility of controlling mechanical properties in multiple directions. We also demo an interface to facilitate users to create FlexCube models. Based on previous researches and alternative perspectives, we explore a quickly designed and low-cost method to fabricate patterns with elastic properties, mainly based on the minimal surface structure.

Spiral Based Point Cloud Representations of Sculptures

Abstract:Boundary representations of sculptures and other 3D objects are now widely available and useful for both 3D printing and digital rendering. I present an approach to transform such representations into a point cloud representation where the points are organized using a 3D spiral. This representation is then used to create a function that returns a point on the surface of the object using height and angle as the inputs. Such a function facilitates making drawings of 3D objects, transforming them and placing a two dimensional design onto their surface.

Abstract:The three-body problem defines dynamics on the space of triangles in the plane. The shape sphere is the moduli space of oriented similarity classes of planar triangles and lies inside shape space, a Euclidean three-space parameterizing oriented congruence classes of triangles. We derive and investigate the geometry and dynamics induced on these spaces by the three-body problem. We present two theorems concerning the three-body problem whose discovery was made through the shape space perspective.

Abstract:We show how to convert models of complex systems such as 2D cellular automata into a 3D printed object. Our method takes into account the limitations inherent to 3D printing processes and materials. Our approach automates the greater part of this task, bypassing the use of CAD software and the need for manual design. As a proof of concept, a physical object representing a modified forest fire model was successfully printed. Automated conversion methods similar to the ones developed here can be used to create objects for research, for demonstration and teaching, for outreach, or simply for aesthetic pleasure. As our outputs can be touched, they may be particularly useful for those with visual disabilities.

Abstract:The purpose of this short paper is to describe a project to manufacture a regular octohedron on a 3D printer. We assume that the reader is familiar with the basics of 3D printing. In the project, we use fundamental ideas to calculate the vertices and faces of an octohedron. Then, we utilize the OPENSCAD program to create a virtual 3D model and an STereoLithography (.stl) file that can be used by a 3D printer.

Abstract:We give some new explicit examples of putatively optimal projective spherical designs. i.e., ones for which there is numerical evidence that they are of minimal size. These form continuous families, and so have little apparent symmetry in general, which requires the introduction of new techniques for their construction. New examples of interest include an 11-point spherical (3, 3)-design for R 3 , and a 12-point spherical (2, 2)-design for R 4 given by four Mercedes-Benz frames that lie on equi-isoclinic planes. We also give results of an extensive numerical study to determine the nature of the real algebraic variety of optimal projective real spherical designs, and in particular when it is a single point (a unique design) or corresponds to an infinite family of designs.

Locally flat embeddings of 3-manifolds in $S^4$

Abstract:M. Freedman showed that every homology 3-sphere embeds as a locally flat submanifold of $S^4$. This is in striking contrast to the state of our knowledge of smooth embeddings of homology spheres. This book surveys what is presently known about the topic of its title, with emphasis on embeddings of Seifert fibred 3-manifolds and on distinguishing embeddings by properties of the complementary regions. In the final chapters 4-dimension surgery is used to study embeddings in which the complementary regions have abelian or nilpotent fundamental groups, and the final appendix contains a number of open questions. Work on smooth embeddings is only described briefly, as current techniques in this area are beyond the author's expertise.

Abstract:A problem that is simple to state in the context of spherical geometry, and that seems rather interesting, appears to have been unexamined to date in the mathematical literature. The problem can also be recast as a problem in the real projective plane. The problem on the sphere involves four great circles and their intersections. A substantial claim is made concerning this problem, and subsequently proved by relating the spherical problem to a compelling problem in solid geometry. This latter problem essentially concerns relationships between the angles of a tetrahedron, and has practical applications, particularly in connection with the Perspective 3-Point (Pose) Problem.

Abstract:When modeling new geometries, artists and modelers tend to habitually document their creative imaginations through illustrating a set of three-view 2D images. These images are also easy to obtain for any geometry that already exists either in reality or in the cyberspace. However, due to the ambiguity of these three-view images in defining 3D models, automatic reconstruction of a geometry from them still carries serious technical limitations. This paper introduces a new system for rapid modeling of 3D free-form meshes from three-view images with the interactive user aid indicated via sketching. Distinct from the existing rapid sketching based 3D modeling methods, such as [Igarashi et al. 1999; Nelean et al. 2007], all of which require users to interactively illustrate the shape lines of the target object, the new system only expects users to select unwanted corners' shape lines from a set of 3D shape lines automatically extracted according to the input three-view images. For the model created through the Boolean operation, a particular UV mapping can be established that maps, via a one-to-one relationship, the input three-view images as texture onto the corresponding three sides of the constructed geometry.

Abstract:We present simple models of trajectories in space, both in 2D and in 3D. The first examples, which model bicircular moves in the same direction, are classical curves (epicycloids, etc.). Then, we explore bicircular moves in reverse direction and tricircular moves in 2D and 3D, to explore complex visualisations of extraplanetary movements. These moves are studied in a plane setting. Then, adding increasing complexity, we explore them in a non planar setting (which is a closer model of the real situation). The exploration is followed by using these approaches for creating mathematical art in 2D and 3D printed objects, providing new ways of mathematical representations. Students' activities are organized around this exploration.

Abstract:We give a formalization of Pratt's intuitive sculpting process for higher-dimensional automata (HDA). Intuitively, an HDA is a sculpture if it can be embedded in (i.e., sculpted from) a single higher dimensional cell (hypercube). A first important result of this paper is that not all HDA can be sculpted, exemplified through several natural acyclic HDA, one being the famous "broken box" example of van Glabbeek. Moreover, we show that even the natural operation of unfolding is completely unrelated to sculpting, e.g., there are sculptures whose unfoldings cannot be sculpted. We investigate the expressiveness of sculptures, as a proper subclass of HDA, by showing them to be equivalent to regular ST-structures (an event-based counterpart of HDA) and to (regular) Chu spaces over 3 (in their concurrent interpretation given by Pratt). We believe that our results shed new light on the intuitions behind sculpting as a method of modeling concurrent behavior, showing the precise reaches of its expressiveness. Besides expressiveness, we also develop an algorithm to decide whether an HDA can be sculpted. More importantly, we show that sculptures are equivalent to Euclidean cubical complexes (being the geometrical counterpart of our combinatorial definition), which include the popular PV models used for deadlock detection. This exposes a close connection between geometric and combinatorial models for concurrency which may be of use for both areas.

Abstract:This paper classifies spherical objects in various geometric settings in dimensions two and three, including both minimal and partial crepant resolutions of Kleinian singularities, as well as arbitrary flopping 3-fold contractions with only Gorenstein terminal singularities. The main result is much more general: in each such setting, we prove that all objects in the associated null category with no negative Ext groups are the image, under the action of an appropriate braid or pure braid group, of some object in the heart of a bounded t-structure. The corollary is that all objects which admit no negative Exts, and for which the self-Hom space is one dimensional, are the images of the simples. A variation on this argument goes further, and classifies all bounded t-structures. There are multiple geometric, topological and algebraic consequences, primarily to autoequivalences and stability conditions. Our main new technique also extends into representation theory, and we establish that in the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which is silting discrete, every object with no negative Ext groups lies in the heart of a bounded t-structure. As a consequence, every semibrick complex can be completed to a simple minded collection.
