Abstract:One way to better understand the smooth mapping class group of the 4-sphere would be to give a list of generators in the form of explicit diffeomorphisms supported in neighborhoods of submanifolds, in analogy with Dehn twists on surfaces. As a step in this direction, we describe a surjective homomorphism from a group associated to loops of 2-spheres in $S^2 \times S^2$'s onto this smooth mapping class group, discuss two natural and in some sense complementary subgroups of the domain of this homomomorphism, show that one is in the kernel, and give generators as above for the image of the other. These generators are described as twists along Montesinos twins, i.e. pairs of embedded 2-spheres in the 4-sphere intersecting transversely at two points.

Abstract:S. Donaldson disproved the smooth $\mathrm{h}$-cobordism conjecture in dimension $4$ by studying invariants coming from the moduli space of connections on $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-bundles over smooth $4$-dimension manifolds $X$. In this paper, we reverse his point of view in dimension $8$. Namely, we consider fibrations coming from diffeomorphisms classes of homotopy Hopf manifolds $\Sigma^7\times\mathrm{S}^1$, i.e., $\Sigma^7$ is a homotopy sphere, seeing the bases as moduli spaces for additional structures.

Abstract:In 2009, Calegari constructed smooth homotopy 4-spheres from monodromies of fibered knots. We prove that all these are diffeomorphic to the standard 4-sphere. Our method uses 5-dimensional handlebody techniques and results on mapping class groups of 3-dimensional handlebodies. As an application, we present potential counterexamples to the smooth 4-dimensional Schoenflies conjecture which are related to the work of Casson and Gordon on fibered ribbon knots.

Pseudo-trisections of four-manifolds with boundary

Abstract:We introduce the concept of pseudo-trisections of smooth oriented compact 4-manifolds with boundary. The main feature of pseudo-trisections is that they have lower complexity than relative trisections for given 4-manifolds. We prove existence and uniqueness of pseudo-trisections, and further establish a one-to-one correspondence between pseudo-trisections and their diagrammatic representations. We next introduce the concept of pseudo-bridge trisections of neatly embedded surfaces in smooth oriented compact 4-manifolds. We develop a diagrammatic theory of pseudo-bridge trisections and provide examples of computations of invariants of neatly embedded surfaces in 4-manifolds using said diagrams.

Abstract:We construct closed, aspherical, smooth 4-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. These provide counterexamples to a smooth analog of the Borel conjecture in dimension four. Our technique is to apply the `reflection group trick' of the first author to pairs of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary constructed by Hayden and Piccirillo.

Abstract:This text is an expanded version of the lectures delivered by the authors at the CIME summer school “Symplectic 4-manifolds and algebraic surfaces,” Cetraro (Italy), September 2–10, 2003. The aim of these lectures were mostly to introduce graduate students to pseudo-holomorphic techniques for the study of isotopy of symplectic submanifolds in dimension four. We tried to keep the style of the lectures by emphasizing the basic reasons for the correctness of a result rather than by providing full details. Essentially none of the content claims any originality, but most of the results are scattered in the literature in sometimes hard-to-read locations. For example, we give a hands-on proof of the smooth parametrization of the space of holomorphic cycles on a complex surface under some positivity assumption. This is usually derived by the big machinery of deformation theory together with Banach-analytic methods. For an uninitiated person it is hard not only to follow the formal arguments needed to deduce the result from places in the literature, but also, and maybe more importantly, to understand whyit is true. While our treatment here has the disadvantage to consider only a particular situation that does not even quite suffice for the proof of the Main Theorem (Theorem 9.1) we hope that it is useful for enhancing the understanding of this result outside the community of hardcore complex analysts and algebraic geometers. The last section discusses the proof of the main theorem, which is also the main result from [SiTi3]. The logic of this proof is a bit difficult, involving several reduction steps and two inductions, and we are not sure if the current presentation really helps in understanding what is going on. Maybe somebody else has to take this up again and add new ideas into streamlining this piece. Finally there is one section on the application to symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. This makes the link to the other lectures of the summer school, notably to those by Auroux and Smith.
Symplectic fillings of unit cotangent bundles of spheres and applications

Abstract:We prove the uniqueness, up to diffeomorphism, of symplectically aspherical fillings of the unit cotangent bundle of the $3$-sphere $S^3$ under a certain topological assumption, which Stein fillings automatically satisfy. In the course of the proof, we show that any symplectically aspherical filling of the unit cotangent bundle of the $n$-sphere $S^n$ ($n \geq 3$) is simply-connected. As applications, we first show the non-existence of exact symplectic cobordisms between some $5$-dimensional Brieskorn manifolds. We also determine the diffeomorphism types of closed symplectic $6$-manifolds with certain codimension $2$ symplectic submanifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometries associated with 3-forms of various orbital types on a symplectic 6-manifold. We show that there are extremely rich geometric structures attached to certain unstable 3-forms arising naturally from degeneration of Calabi-Yau structures, which in turn provides us a new perspective towards the SYZ conjecture. We give concrete examples and demonstrate that the limiting behavior of the Type IIA flow can be used to detect canonical geometric structures on symplectic manifolds.

Constraints on embedded spheres and real projective planes in 4-manifolds from Seiberg-Witten theory

Abstract:We calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariants of branched covers of prime degree, where the branch locus consists of embedded spheres. Aside from the formula itself, our calculations give rise to some new constraints on configurations of embedded spheres in 4-manifolds. Using similar methods, we also obtain new constraints on embeddings of real projective planes and spheres with a cusp singularity. Moreover, we show that the existence of certain configurations of surfaces would give rise to 4-manifolds of non-simple type. Our proof makes use of equivariant Seiberg-Witten invariants as well as a gluing formula for the relative Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with positive scalar curvature boundary.

4-Dimensional Isoparametric Hypersurfaces of Index 2 in the Pseudo-Riemannian Space Forms

Abstract:We study isoparametric hypersurfaces, whose principal curvatures are all constant, in the pseudo-Riemannian space forms. In this paper, we investigate three topics.Firstly, according to Petrov's classification theorem, we give a classification of hypersurfaces of index 2 with respect to a pair of a shape operator and a metric. Therefore, we can define types of isoparametric hypersurfaces of index 2 concerning the classification. Secondly, we give several examples of certain types. Thirdly, we show that there exist no isoparametric hypersurfaces of index 2 whose shape operators have complex principal curvatures in certain cases.

Locally flat embeddings of 3-manifolds in $S^4$

Abstract:M. Freedman showed that every homology 3-sphere embeds as a locally flat submanifold of $S^4$. This is in striking contrast to the state of our knowledge of smooth embeddings of homology spheres. This book surveys what is presently known about the topic of its title, with emphasis on embeddings of Seifert fibred 3-manifolds and on distinguishing embeddings by properties of the complementary regions. In the final chapters 4-dimension surgery is used to study embeddings in which the complementary regions have abelian or nilpotent fundamental groups, and the final appendix contains a number of open questions. Work on smooth embeddings is only described briefly, as current techniques in this area are beyond the author's expertise.

Abstract:It is well-known that an n-dimensional Poincar\'{e} complex $X^n$, $n \ge 5$, has the homotopy type of a compact topological $n$-manifold if the total surgery obstruction $s(X^n)$ vanishes. The present paper discusses recent attempts to prove analogous result in dimension 4. We begin by reviewing the necessary algebraic and controlled surgery theory. Next, we discuss the key idea of Quinn's approach. Finally, we present some cases of special fundamental groups, due to the authors and to Yamasaki.

Abstract:Cappell-Shaneson homotopy 4-spheres (CS spheres) are potential counterexamples of the smooth 4-dimensional Poincaré conjecture. Akbulut proved that infinite CS spheres are diffeomorphic to the standard 4-sphere by Kirby calculus. Kim and Yamada found another family of CS spheres which is composed of standard CS spheres. In this paper, we prove more CS spheres are standard. We give 145 new infinite families of CS spheres which are diffeomorphic to the standard 4-sphere.

Abstract:Quasi-elliptic cohomology is conjectured by Sati and Schreiber as a particularly suitable approximation to equivariant 4-th Cohomotopy, which classifies the charges carried by M-branes in M-theory in a way that is analogous to the traditional idea that complex K-theory classifies the charges of D-branes in string theory. In this paper we compute quasi-elliptic cohomology of 4-spheres under the action by some finite subgroups that are the most interesting isotropy groups where the M5-branes may sit.

Pseudo-automorphisms of rational threefolds and Kummer surfaces

Abstract:Kummer surfaces are special quartic surfaces that admit $16$ nodes. The automorphisms of K3 Kummer surfaces are rich and complicated. Based on the results of Keum and Kondō, and as a continuation of the recent result by He and Yang, we lift $45$ classically known automorphisms of Kummer surfaces to pseudo-automorphisms of a threefold, the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^3$ along $6$ points and $15$ lines. We give a description of a fundamental domain of the group generated by all the known pseudo-automorphisms on this threefold.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to verify that the study of generic conformally flat hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms is reduced to a surface theory in the standard 3-sphere. The conformal structure of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces is characterized as conformally flat (local-)3-metrics with the Guichard condition. Then, there is a certain class of orthogonal analytic (local-)Riemannian 2-metrics with constant Gauss curvature -1 such that any 2-metric of the class gives rise to a one-parameter family of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, we firstly relate 2-metrics of the class to surfaces in the 3-sphere: for a 2-metric of the class, a 5-dimensional set of (non-isometric) analytic surfaces in the 3-sphere is determined such that any surface of the set gives rise to an evolution of surfaces in the 3-sphere issuing from the surface and the evolution is the Gauss map of a generic conformally flat hypersurface in the Euclidean 4-space. Secondly, we characterize analytic surfaces in the 3-sphere which give rise to generic conformally flat hypersurfaces.

Pseudo-Anosov representatives of stable Hamiltonian structures

Abstract:A pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface is a canonical representative of its mapping class. In this paper, we explain that a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow is similarly a canonical representative of its stable Hamiltonian class. It follows that there are finitely many pseudo-Anosov flows admitting positive Birkhoff sections on any given rational homology 3-sphere. This result has a purely topological consequence: any 3-manifold can be obtained in at most finitely many ways as $p/q$ surgery on a fibered hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ for a slope $p/q$ satisfying $q\geq 6$, $p\neq 0, \pm 1, \pm 2 \mod q$. The proof of the main theorem generalizes an argument of Barthelmé--Bowden--Mann.

Spherical objects in dimensions two and three

Abstract:This paper classifies spherical objects in various geometric settings in dimensions two and three, including both minimal and partial crepant resolutions of Kleinian singularities, as well as arbitrary flopping 3-fold contractions with only Gorenstein terminal singularities. The main result is much more general: in each such setting, we prove that all objects in the associated null category with no negative Ext groups are the image, under the action of an appropriate braid or pure braid group, of some object in the heart of a bounded t-structure. The corollary is that all objects which admit no negative Exts, and for which the self-Hom space is one dimensional, are the images of the simples. A variation on this argument goes further, and classifies all bounded t-structures. There are multiple geometric, topological and algebraic consequences, primarily to autoequivalences and stability conditions. Our main new technique also extends into representation theory, and we establish that in the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which is silting discrete, every object with no negative Ext groups lies in the heart of a bounded t-structure. As a consequence, every semibrick complex can be completed to a simple minded collection.
