Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is commonly used in food processing and preservation processes due to its antioxidant and antibiotic properties. However, it has been documented that excessive intake of SO2 could cause serious health problems. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop a novel SO2 probe with excellent performance. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe (Ph-CN) based on the ICT-ESIPT mechanism for monitoring SO2 with the C[double bond, length as m-dash]N double bond was developed. Furthermore, Ph-CN exhibits various splendid features, such as near-infrared (NIR) and ratiometric detection, real-time detection (<5 s), good selectivity and photostability, large Stokes shift (230 nm) and large emission shift (200 nm). Most importantly, the probe Ph-CN can realize the detection of SO2 in HeLa cells and in vivo.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important reactive sulfur species widely found in living organisms. SO2 is recognized as an important regulatory factor that can modulate the cardiovascular system, with functions such as relaxing blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and acting as an anti-oxidation. Compared to fluorescence turn-on type probes, a ratiometric fluorescent probe can avoid the background fluorescence of the probe and the interference from other environmental factors. Herein, a new ratiometric-type fluorescent probe with emission in the near infrared area was developed. Upon interaction with SO2, the emission at 750 nm decreased and a new fluorescent peak was observed in the visible region simultaneously. The novel probe showed excellent selectivity toward SO2 among other species. In addition, the new probe exhibited little toxicity to HeLa cells and was used for imaging SO2 in solution and the cell environment successfully with a fluorescence change in both the green and red channels.

Abstract:A novel mitochondria-targeted ratiometric near-infrared fluorescence probe NDMBT for Sulfur dioxide (SO2) derivatives was constructed based on the SO2 derivatives-triggered Michael addition reaction. It displayed ultrafast response time (within 10s), large hypsochromic shift (260nm), high photostability, excellent selectivity and high sensitivity in aqueous media with a detection limit of 43nM. More importantly, it was successfully applied to imaging of the enzymatically generated SO2 derivatives in mitochondria of live cells.

Abstract:A novel chromenylium-based fluorescent probe was exploited for sulphur dioxide (SO₂) detecting. The probe displayed a remarkable fluorescence turn-on response towards SO₂ based on the nucleophilic addition reaction to the carbon-carbon double bond with 105 nm Stock shift. The probe was successfully applied for the quantification of SO₂.The linear detection range was from 0-160 μM with the detection limit as low as 99.27 nM. It also exhibited high selectivity for SO₂ than other reactive species and amino acids. Furthermore, cell staining experiments indicated that the probe was cell membrane permeable and could be used for high-performance imaging of SO₂ in living cells. The superior properties of the probe made it highly promising for use in chemical and biological applications.

Abstract:SO2 has been recently identified as an essential gas messenger followed by NO, CO and H2S. However, abnormal concentrations of SO2 in our bodies can cause many diseases. Thus, the real-time monitoring of SO2 to well define the generation, physiological and pathological functions of SO2 is urgently needed. In this work, we developed a novel SO2 fluorescent probe on the basis of the conjugation of semi-cyanine and coumarin derivate dyes with superior features, such as near-infrared (NIR) and two-photon dual-mode monitoring, a large Stokes shift (175 nm), ultrafast response towards SO2 (within 10 s), high selectivity and photostability. Furthermore, this probe could sense SO2 by dual colorimetric and fluorescence means. In biological imaging, the probe was able to trace exogenous and endogenous SO2 in living cells, mitochondria, E. coli, zebrafish and mice under an NIR and two-photon dual-mode. These results demonstrated that the probe has strong potential for studying the physiological and pathological functions of SO2in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide derivatives (HSO3− and SO32−) play an important role in food preservative, antibacterial, antioxidant and other aspects, so it is urgent for us to develop more efficient detection methods to broaden their application in biochemical research and related disease diagnosis. Fluorescent probes are of particular interest because of their simplicity and high temporal and spatial resolution. Herein, we constructed a new near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probe, CQC, composed of coumarin fluorophore and quinoline fluorophore, for detecting SO2 derivatives. The near-infrared emission probe CQC with a large Stokes shift (260 nm) not only kept the distance between the two emission peaks large enough (165 nm), but also had a particularly high energy transfer efficiency (99.5%), and was particularly sensitive to the detection of HSO3−/SO32− (LOD: 0.1 μM). The powerful probe CQC succeeded in real-time visualizing endogenous HSO3−/SO32− in living cells.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO,) is a dangerous environmental pollutant. Excessive intake of it may cause some respiratory diseases and even lung cancer. The development of effective methods for detection of SO2 is of great importance for the environment and physiology. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a novel two-photon (TP) and deep-red emission ratiometric fluorescent probe (CP) for detection of SO2. Notably, the novel probe CP exhibited ultrafast response to SO2 in less than 5 s and displayed a great emission shift (195 nm) and a large emission signal ratio variation (enhancement from 0.1347 to 100.14). In addition, the unique probe was successfully employed for imaging SO2 not only in the mitochondria of living cells but also in brain tissues and zebrafishes.

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescent probe (L-HF3) based on an efficient FRET platform constructed by 2-dicyanomethylene-3-cyano-4,5,5-trimethyl-2,5-dihydrofuran (TCF) and 3-hydroxyflavone (HF) fluorophores for detection of sulfur dioxide derivatives (HSO3−/SO32−) was developed. The probe featured very large (pseudo) Stokes shifts, good selectivity and high sensitivity, high FRET efficiency and high resolution of the emission bands. The probe was also mitochondria-targeted and could detect exogenous and endogenous bisulfite in living cells.

Abstract:On the basis of a unique nucleophilic addition reaction, a novel water-soluble broadly emitting (500-700 nm) fluorescent Probe 1 was developed for the rapid detection of SO2 derivatives in aqueous media. The positively-charged benzopyrylium moiety in Probe 1 provides both excellent water solubility, making this probe applicable in 100% aqueous environments, and the ability to function as a fluorescence quencher of the coumarin moiety. Probe 1 generates a nearly instantaneous strong fluorescence signal in response to SO2 derivatives having an 8.3 nM detection limit for bisufite. The resulting Probe 1-sulfite adduct emits in the green/red spectral region (lambda(max) = 585 nm) with a large Stokes shift (139 nm). The probe exhibits excellent selectivity toward SO2 derivatives over other potential interfering agents including reactive sulfur-containing species. Importantly, we demonstrate that Probe 1 can be used for the real-time sensing and bioimaging of SO2 derivatives in living cells.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), as a known important sulfur oxide in RSS, has an essential role in achieving the homeostasis of organisms. The development of a highly sensitive and selective fluorescent probe for monitoring SO 2 is of great interest in understanding its pathophysiology. Herein, we developed a new near-infrared FRET-based fluorescent probe QD , in which quinolinium fluorophore was selected as the donor and the dicyanoisophorone fluorophore was selected as the acceptor. Probe QD had dual colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence, larger Stokes shift (277 nm) and longer emission wavelength (677 nm). The fluorescence spectrum showed that QD was highly selective and sensitive with excellent linear response concentration range of 2.5 to 80 μM. Importantly, probe QD allowed detection of SO 2 derivatives and bioimaging of lysosome-targeted in live cells.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is considered as the fourth gas signal molecule after nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It plays important roles in several physiological processes. Therefore, the design and synthesis of nanoprobes for the detection of SO2 derivatives in cells is of great significance. Herein, we report a new ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe based on resonance energy transfer (RET) between biomass quantum dots (BQDs) and organic dye (DMI) for the detection of SO2 derivatives. The proposed ratiometric fluorescence assay allows the determination of HSO3 - in the range of 1.0 to 225 μM with a detection limit of 0.5 μM. Importantly, the proposed ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe exhibits a high photostability and good selectivity for HSO3 - over other chemical species including H2S and biological mercaptans. Quantitation of HSO3 - in cell lysates by using the nanoprobe is demonstrated.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) derivatives are extensively utilized as both a preservative for foods and an active gaseous signal molecule in various physiological and pathological processes, but their excessive intake would bring harmful effects on human health; so, the determination of SO2 derivatives is of great importance. Herein, we developed a ratiometric fluorescent probe named 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole-3-ethyl-1,1,2-trimethyl-1H-benzo[e]indolium (HBT-EMBI) by introducing a hemicyanine unit of EMBI to an HBT group for the detection of SO2 derivatives via an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effects. The probe displays some advantages, such as a colorimetric change from purple to colorless, a ratiometric fluorescence with zero cross-talk, and a remarkably large emission shift (Δλ = 164 nm) under a single-wavelength excitation. Accordingly, the probe HBT-EMBI has been successfully employed for the colorimetric and ratiometric determination of SO2 derivatives in real food samples and the quantitative visualization of SO2 derivative variations in HepG2 cells.

Abstract:As a signal molecule, SO2 participates in many complex physiological processes. Therefore, in view of the addition properties of SO2 derivatives to unsaturated olefins, we reasonably designed a set of ratiometric fluorescent probes (NB1, NB2, NB3), and evaluated the influence of the coumarin moiety on the optical properties of the probes. Amongst the probes when the 7-position is substituted by a fused quinolizine (julolidine) unit, the probe NB2 shows a change from red to green fluorescence upon reaction with SO2, and has excellent optical properties: 136 nm emission band gap, 230 s response time, high selectivity, and excellent sensitivity. More valuable is the fact that NB2 can be used in cell imaging experiments, real sample detection, and employed to prepare fluorescent test paper for the qualitative test of SO2 gas, indicating that NB2 can be used as a powerful tool for the detection of SO2 derivatives.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is an essential signaling molecule involved in various physiological processes within living organisms. Bisulfite (HSO 3 − ) possesses antioxidant, antimicrobial, and preservative properties, making it a common food additive. However, elevated levels of SO 2 or excessive HSO 3 − intake can lead to a range of diseases, highlighting the importance of detecting SO 2 and its derivatives (HSO 3 − /SO 3 2− ). This study presents a quinolinium-fused rhodamine fluorogenic probe ( RQB-R ) for ultrafast, highly selective, and sensitive detection of HSO 3 − . The probe operates via a dual-response mechanism, exhibiting a visible color change and a transition from nonemissive to intense red fluorescence upon interaction with HSO 3 − . The detection mechanism involves a 1,4-nucleophilic addition reaction of HSO 3 − at the 4-position of the quinolinium unit, which bypasses the photoinduced electron-transfer fluorescence quenching pathway and activates the intramolecular charge transfer mechanism, thereby enhancing fluorescence emission. Practical applications of the RQB-R probe include rapid quantification of HSO 3 − levels in sugar samples and integration into smartphone-assisted detection platforms. This method demonstrates excellent biocompatibility and enables visualization of both exogenous and endogenous HSO 3 − within MCF-7 cells, with a specific focus on targeting mitochondria.
