Abstract:Phosphorous modified high silica ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized by infusion method.XRD BET and NH3-TPD results showed that phosphorous compounds were loaded uniformly on the surface of catalyst and de-aluminated pore surface was observed.The strong acids of phosphorous modified catalyst decreased and the weak acids increased.It also revealed from the results of methanol to propylene reaction that the phosphorous compounds in high silica ZSM-5 catalysts could suppress the hydrogen transfer reaction and increase the propylene selectivity.But the activity of catalysts would decrease rapidly when the phosphorous was over-loaded.

Abstract:The acidity and Ga-species status in the zeolite play a crucial role in the CO2-assisted propane dehydroaromatization (CO2-PDA). In this work, a copper modified Ga-MFI zeolite (Cu/Ga-MFI) with well dispersed framework Ga species was fabricated. A remarkable aromatics selectivity of 73% at propane conversion of 93.6% was achieved on Cu/Ga-MFI catalyst. The Ga atoms in MFI framework can create a moderate acid strength, while the introduced Cu provide an appropriate Brønsted/Lewis acid distribution, enhancing the synergy between metal-related species and the zeolite. Besides, DFT results indicate that the acid sites in Ga-MFI are more preferable for the dehydrogenation of propane instead of the C-C cleavage. Moreover, CO2 can inhibit coke formation through reverse Boudouard and reverse water gas shift reaction, which endows Cu/Ga-MFI catalyst with superior anti-coking ability and regeneration stability. This work provides a novel approach for designing catalysts with high activity, aromatics selectivity, and stability for CO2-PDA reactions.

Abstract:The aromatization of light alkane is an important process for increasing the aromatic production and utilization efficiency of light alkane resources simultaneously. Herein, Ga-modified HZSM-5 catalysts were prepared and investigated by a series of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption, and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption to study their physicochemical properties. The catalytic performance in propane aromatization was also tested. Importantly, the structure-activity relationship, reaction pathway, and coke formation mechanism in propane aromatization were systematically explored. It was found that different Ga introduction methods would affect the amounts of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, and Ga-HZSM-5 prepared by the hydrothermal method exhibited higher amounts of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites but a lower B/L ratio. As a result, Ga-HZSM-5 showed higher propane conversion and benzene, toluene, and xylene yield compared with that of Ga2O3/HZSM-5. The propane aromatization reaction pathway indicated that propane dehydrogenation to propene was a crucial step for aromatic formation. The increase of the Lewis acid density in Ga-HZSM-5 can effectively improve the dehydrogenation rate and promote the aromatization reaction. Furthermore, the formation of coke species was studied by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry and Raman approaches, the results of which indicated that the graphitization degree of coke formed over spent Ga-HZSM-5 is lower, resulting in enhanced anticoking stability.

Abstract:A core-shell structured Zn/SiO2@ZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by a hydrothermal coating method, and its physicochemical properties and catalytic performance in methane co-aromatization with propane were studied using a conventional solid catalyst (Zn/ZSM-5) as the comparison. Results revealed that methane was activated on Zn sites to form a large number of Zn methyl species and then incorporated during the aromatic formation process to promote the formation of aromatics. At a space velocity of 3600 mL g(-1) h(-1) and the reaction temperature of 550 degrees C, the methane, propane conversion and the aromatics selectivity of Zn/SiO2@ZSM-5 catalyst were 7.9 %, 95.9 % and 88.1 %, respectively, which were higher than those of Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst by 2.8 %, 6.7 % and 6.8 %, respectively. The unique reaction pathway of core (Zn/SiO2, Zn sites)-shell (ZSM-5, acid sites) was mainly responsible for the superior performance in methane co-aromatization with propane. Meanwhile, the core-shell structured Zn/SiO2@ZSM-5 catalyst aroused the formation of distinct micro-macroporous system, which facilitated quick diffusion of desired products out of the intraframework channels and inhibited the formation of carbon deposits. These features of Zn/SiO2@ZSM-5 catalyst granted it superb diffusion ability and unique core-shell structure, which greatly enhanced the methane, propane conversion and aromatic selectivity together with a preeminent catalytic stability.

Abstract:The tandem reactions of CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation and aromatization (CO2-ODA) of ethane were investigated over ZSM-5 modified with zinc (Zn) and phosphorus (P) by experimental studies and DFT calculations. The nature of active Zn species and their interaction with P were elucidated for understanding Zn/P-ZSM-5 catalyzed CO2-ODA reaction of ethane. Compared to the direct dehydrogenation and aromatization (DDA) reaction, the Zn/P-ZSM-5 catalyst possessed higher ethane conversion, enhanced aromatics yield, and better stability in the CO2-ODA reaction. The presence of CO2 reduced the carbon deposition, stabilized the Zn species, and thereby facilitated the generation of more liquid aromatics in CO2-assisted ethane aromatization. In situ characterization and DFT calculations provided insight into the mechanisms of CO2-ODA over the Zn/P-ZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:Development of highly effective catalysts for one-stage conversion of methane with high selectivity to valuable products and energy efficiency will provide an efficient way to utilize natural gas and oil-associated gases and to protect environment. In recent years, there have been many efforts on direct catalytic transformations of methane into higher hydrocarbons by feeding additives together with methane under non-oxidative conditions. This paper reviewed the advances in recent research on non-oxidative aromatization of methane in the presence of propane over different modified HZSM-5 catalysts. The thermodynamic consideration, the isotope verification and the mechanism of the activation of methane in the presence of propane are discussed in the paper in detail.

Abstract:High catalytic activity and stability of dehydrogenation of propane to propene in the presence of CO2 were achieved over Ga2O3 catalyst supported on HZSM-5 with high Si/Al ratio. The propene yield stabilized at about 22 % without observable deactivation in 100 h, which was thought to be caused by adjusting the acidity of the catalyst appropriately through dealumination of the zeolite. The reaction mechanism on the titled catalyst was discussed.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of propane over Ga-modified catalysts is highly sensitive to the identity of support, but the underlying cause of support effects has not been well established. In this article, SSZ-13, SSZ-39, ZSM-5, silica and γ-Al2O3 were used to load Ga species by incipient wet impregnation. The structure, textural properties, acidity of the Ga-based catalysts and the process of CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of propane were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption (N2 physisorption), ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), pyridine chemisorbed Fourier transform infrared spectra (Py-FTIR), OH-FTIR and in situ FTIR. Evaluation of the catalytic performance combined with detailed catalyst characterization suggests that their dehydrogenation activity is positively associated with the number of acid sites in middle strength, confirming that the Lewis acid sites generated by Ga cations are the active species in the reaction. Ga/Na-SSZ-39(9) also has feasible acidic strength and a unique channel structure, which is conducive to the dissociative adsorption of propane and desorption of olefins. The Ga/Na-SSZ-39(9) catalysts showed superior olefins selectivity and catalytic stability at 600 °C compared to any other catalysts. This approach to quantifying support acid strength, and channel structure and applying it as a key catalytic descriptor of support effects is a useful tool to enable the rational design of next-generation CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation catalysts.

Aromatization of Methane by Using Propane As Co-Reactant over Cobalt and Zinc-Impregnated HZSM-5 Catalysts

Abstract:The activities of the cobalt and zinc-impregnated HZSM-5 catalysts to the non-oxidative conversion of propane (C3) and methane (C1) into aromatic hydrocarbons were evaluated using a fixed-bed microreactor. C1 conversion reached 36.7% and the selectivity of aromatic products reached above 88.7% at atmospheric pressure, weight (hourly) space velocity (WHSV) 1.6 g h−1/(g cat)−1 and 873 K. The influence of the acidity and the ratio of cobalt in the catalyst on the conversion of methane and propane was evaluated. C1 incorporation was conclusively confirmed by the mass spectral analyses of aromatic products produced in a run with 13CH4 which shows a significant 13C enrichment in the C6H6+, C7H8+ and C8H10+ fragments. The methane activation could result from its hydrogen-transfer reaction with alkenes. These catalysts were thoroughly characterized using XRD, N2 adsorption measurements, TPD of NH3, and FT-IR. The results showed that the activation of methane in low temperature was due to existence of propane. The acidic changes and micropore area of the catalyst severely affected aromatization, and resulted in drastic modifications in product distribution. From this work, we found that only a small fraction of tetrahedral framework aluminum, which corresponds to the Bronsted acid sites, is sufficient to accomplish the aromatization of the intermediates in methane and propane aromatic reaction, while the superfluous strong Bronsted acid sites, which can be decreased by adding Co and Zn, are showed to be related with the aromatic carbonaceous deposits on the catalysts. The density of acidic site and the strength of strong acid decreased when the concentration of Co and Zn in the catalyst increased. Therefore, a much higher benzene yield and a longer durability of the catalysts are obtained when compared with the conventional HZSM-5 catalysts.

Abstract:Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional catalyst design concept has been exemplified in several processes to direct conversion syngas to value-added chemicals and fuels such as mixed light olefins, ethylene, aromatics and gasoline. Herein we demonstrate that the product can be steered toward liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with a selectivity up to 89% in hydrocarbons especially propane selectivity reaching 80% at CO conversion of 63% using ZnCrOx-H-SSZ-39 catalyst. Interestingly, the quantity of the acid sites of SSZ-39 does not influence obviously the hydrocarbon distribution but the strength is crucial for selective formation of propane. This finding provides an alternative route of LPG synthesis from a variety of carbon resources via syngas.
Co-aromatization of Methane with Propane over Zn/HZSM-5: the Methane Reaction Pathway and the Effect of Zn Distribution

Abstract:The co-aromatization of methane with propane is investigated using Zn/HZSM-5 as the catalyst at 400 degrees C. The presence of methane has a pronounced effect on the product distribution in terms of improved formation of phenyl rings and substitution groups of aromatic species. Isotopic labeling and solid-state NMR spectroscopy studies reveal that the favored site for methane incorporation varies at different stages along the co-aromatization reaction, from the benzylic sites at the initial stage to the phenyl rings and then substitution groups as the reaction proceeds. SIMS spectroscopy of the involved reaction intermediates suggests the formation of C-4 species over the Zn sites that are bonding to the oxygen atoms of the zeolite framework, which is supported by theoretical calculations. The interaction between Zn species and the zeolite framework is also confirmed by XAS and changes in coordination environments are identified through XANES and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The redistribution of Zn during the reaction is observed on the surface of the zeolite support. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy images show that Zn is rich in the inner pores compared with the external surface of the catalyst particles in the pristine catalysts. XANES and XPS spectra demonstrate that the Zn concentration increases on the external surface after the reaction, a conclusion that is further supported by the theoretical study. The Zn redistribution might be among the reasons for methane participation pathway alternation during the co-aromatization, since the Zn species located within the inner pores and on the external surface might prefer to catalyze the methane incorporation to the phenyl rings and substitution groups of the formed aromatics, respectively.

Abstract:A systematic study of the comparative performances of different metal-impregnated HZSM-5 catalysts (Zn, Ga, Mo, Co, and Zr) for propane conversion is presented. The physicochemical properties of catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, 27Al MAS NMR, NH3-TPD and Py-FTIR. It was found that the acidities of the catalysts were significantly influenced by loading metal. More specifically, Mo-, Co- or Zr-modified catalysts showed a large metal size and low acidic density, resulting high olefin selectivity, while Zn- or Ga-modified catalysts maintained their small metal size and acidic density, and mainly reduced B/L due to the Lewis acid sites created by Zn or Ga species, resulting in high aromatics selectivity. Experimental results also showed that there is a balance between metals size and medium and strong acidity on propane conversion. Moreover, based on the different acidity of metal-modified HZSM-5 catalysts, the mechanism of propane conversion was also discussed.

Abstract:The core-shell ZSM-5@MCM-41 catalysts with various MCM-41 shell thickness were successfully synthesized by the epitaxial recrystallization method using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template, and the corresponding Zn/ZSM-5@MCM-41 synthesized by the incipient wetness impregnation were tested in propane aromatization. Multitechniques including XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, ICP, TEM, EDS-mapping, IR, NH3-TPD and IG were employed to investigate the physicochemical properties of Zn/ZSM-5@MCM-41 and the deactivation of carbon deposits. Results revealed that the diffusion capacities of Zn/ZSM-5@MCM-41 have been dramatically improved after the epitaxial growth of mesoporous MCM-41 shell. In addition, the non-acidic MCM-41 layer covering on ZSM-5 core could decrease Brønsted acid sites, preventing the formation of carbon deposits. Applying the protective MCM-41 shell increased the lifetime of the catalyst in comparison to Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst without the MCM-41 shell. However, the overgrowth of the MCM-41 shell with the formation of amorphous silica particles extended the diffusion path of reactants and products, which blocked the pore structure of the catalyst and reduced the catalytic properties in propane aromatization. In this sense, the controlled formation of appropriate thickness of MCM-41 shell around ZSM-5 core accounted for the enhanced catalytic properties.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation of propane to propene in the presence of CO2 was investigated over zinc oxide supported on HZSM-5 with high Si/Al ratios. The stability of supported ZnO catalysts for the reaction improves with increasing the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 support, while the catalytic activity shows a contrary trend. A highly active and stable catalyst, ZnO supported on HZSM-5 with a Si/Al ratio of 160, was obtained, with a propane conversion of 41.5% and a propene yield of 25.8% at steady state. The results of NH3-TPD and FT-IR spectra of pyridine adsorption reveal that the enhancement of the catalytic stability stems from the decrease in acidity of the catalysts, resulting in the suppression of the side reactions, such as cracking, oligomerization and aromatization. This can be verified by the fact that the amount of coke deposited on the catalyst diminishes with raising the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 support. The promoting effect of CO2 on the dehydrogenation reaction is observed, which can be attributed to the reverse water-gas shift reaction. The catalytic stability is also enhanced by the introduction of CO2 to the feed gas.

Abstract:The shale gas revolution and the carbon-neutrality goal are motivating the landscape toward the synthesis of value-added chemicals or fuels from underutilized ethane with the assistance of greenhouse gas CO 2 . Combining ethane aromatization with CO 2 reduction offers an opportunity to directly produce liquid products for facile separation, storage, and transportation. In the present work, Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts showed promise in the simultaneous CO 2 reduction and ethane aromatization at atmospheric pressure and 873 K. The catalysts were further investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements under in-situ conditions, indicating that most of Fe species existed in the form of Fe oxides and a portion of Fe was incorporated into the ZSM-5 framework generating Lewis acid sites. Both types of Fe species remained almost unchanged under reaction conditions, contributing to an enhanced aromatization activity of Fe/ZSM-5. The effects of CO 2 and steam on the acid sites and in turn aromatization activity were also investigated by transient studies, which exhibited a reversible modification behavior. Moreover, CO 2 was identified to be critical to enhance coke resistance and in turn catalyst stability. Preparation of a Hollow HZSM-5 Zeolite Supported Molybdenum Catalyst by Desilication-Recrystallization for Enhanced Catalytic Properties in Propane Aromatization

Abstract:A hollow HZSM-5 supported molybdenum (Mo) catalyst was successfully prepared by desilication-recrystallization method of HZSM-5 in tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) solution. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibiting excellent performance in propane aromatization reaction was thoroughly investigated, along with the mechanism for the formation of hollow structure and mechanism for the deactivation. Results revealed that TPA(+) exerted a controllable desilication and recrystallization effect. Compared with Na2CO3 treatment which led to a mesoporous structure, TPAOH treatment was able to leach out the inner Si species by OH- and then those Si species recrystallized on the external surface, resulting in the hollow structure and a silicon-rich external surface. In addition, the hollow zeolite exposing higher external surface provided more anchoring sites for Mo species, which was beneficial to the Mo related Lewis acid sites but decreased the surface Bronsted acidity. At 823 K and a space velocity of 1800 mL.g(-1).h(-1), the hollow Mo/HZSM-5(TPAOH) catalyst behaved a propane conversion of 73.01% and aromatics selectivity of 77.36%, exceeding those of the hierarchical Mo/HZSM-5(Na2CO3) catalyst by 5.97% and 9.96%, respectively. These features of Mo/HZSM-5(TPAOH) granted it superb diffusion ability and optimized Bronsted/Lewis acid ratio (B/L = 1.3), which greatly enhanced the propane conversion and aromatic selectivity together with a preeminent catalytic stability.
