Our approach is hybrid in the sense that third-order cumulants are first used to identify the AR part of the non-Gaussian noise process, and then correlation-based high-resolution methods are used for the filtered process to estimate the number of harmonics and their frequencies. Abstract:This paper addresses the harmonic retrieval problem in non-Gaussian ARMA noise. A hybrid ESPRIT approach using second-and third-order statistics is proposed. First, third-order statistics are used to identify the AR part of the non-Gaussian noise process, then the noisy measurements are filtered by AR polynomial, finally, the harmonic signal parameters are estimated. Simulation examples show the effectiveness and high resolution of the new approach.

Abstract:For detecting binary signals in symmetric noise with unknown probability density functions (PDF), a nonlinear receiver is proposed based on the bistable systems with autoregressive models of order 1 [AR(1)]. The bistable systems are utilized to pre-process the noisy observations ahead of the linear correlation (LC) detector. The permutations of the observations are utilized to bypass the design of the optimal LC vector which depends on the noise PDF. The detection performances, in the form of probabilities of error, in some non-Gaussian noise are evaluated versus the matched filter (MF) and Volterra filter (VF) through numerical simulations. The results show that the bistable receiver performs better than MF receiver when the noise deviates from Gaussian distribution, and seems more robust compared to the VF receiver.

Abstract:In this letter, the problem of sparse signal reconstruction from quantized noisy magnitudes y = Q(vertical bar z + w vertical bar + n) is studied, where z = Ax, Q(.) denotes a quantizer, and x is the sparse signal. According to expectation propagation, the above-mentioned problem can be solved by exchanging extrinsic information between the standard linear model (SLM) module and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) module. For the MMSE module, exploiting the fact that the likelihood is only a function of the absolute value of z, the magnitude and phase information of z are decoupled, and only the posterior means and variances of the magnitude of z are calculated. While for the SLM module, the approximate message passing (AMP) is used. To obtain the closed-form expression during the iteration, a novel approximation is adopted. We refer to the resulting algorithm as generalized AMP (Gr-AMP) based quantized phase retrieval algorithm. Finally, several numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the performances of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper addresses the signal modeling problem in colored noise. As contrasted to the reported literatures in which the modeling of a non-Gaussian ARMA signal corrupted by Gaussian noise is studied, this paper focus on the AR modeling of a Gaussian signal embedded in non-Gaussian ARMA noise. The authors show that after prefiltering the output data via the AR polynomial of the non-Gaussian noise model, a new special higher-order Yule-Walker equation which is based on the correlation of the filtered output process can be used to estimate the parameters of the AR Gaussian signal. Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new approach
Extracting Weak Harmonic Signals from Strong Chaotic Interference

Abstract:A new method of extracting weak harmonic signals from chaotic interference is described in this paper. In this method, the received time series is assumed to be composed of some kind of an unknown chaotic signal and very weak harmonics. Thus, the local-geometric-projection method of noise reduction for a chaotic signal can be applied, and, as a result, the purified chaotic signal and the residual error sequences are obtained. The residual error sequences contain most of the weak signals and are modeled as an autoregressive moving average process, and frequencies of the harmonics are resolved. The principles of the approach and the algorithm employed are described in detail. The optimal selection of the algorithm parameters such as the length of the received data, the embedding dimension, and the number of nearest-neighbor points are also discussed. Some simulations of extracting the weak signals with various amplitudes and frequencies from strong chaotic interference are made. Excellent results are achieved from these computer simulations indicating the high effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract:During state perception of a power system, fragments of harmonic data are inevitably lost owing to the loss of synchronization signals, transmission delays, instrument failures, or other factors. A harmonic data recovery method is proposed based on multivariate norm matrix in this paper. The proposed method involves dynamic time warping for correlation analysis of harmonic data, normalized cuts for correlation clustering of power-quality monitoring devices, and adaptive alternating direction method of multipliers for multivariable norm joint optimization. Compared with existing data recovery methods, our proposed method maintains excellent recovery accuracy without requiring prior information or optimization of the power-quality monitoring device. Simulation results on the IEEE 39-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems demonstrate the low computational complexity of the proposed method and its robustness against noise. In addition, the application of the proposed method to field data from a real-world system provides consistent results with those obtained from simulations.

Abstract:Evaluating the harmonic contributions of each nonlinear customer is important for harmonic mitigation in a power system with diverse and complex harmonic sources. The existing evaluation methods have two shortcomings: (1) the calculation accuracy is easily affected by background harmonics fluctuation; and (2) they rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements, which is not economic when widely applied. In this paper, based on the properties of asynchronous measurements, we propose a model for evaluating harmonic contributions without GPS technology. In addition, based on the Gaussianity of the measured harmonic data, a mixed entropy screening mechanism is proposed to assess the fluctuation degree of the background harmonics for each data segment. Only the segments with relatively stable background harmonics are chosen for calculation, which reduces the impacts of the background harmonics in a certain degree. Additionally, complex independent component analysis, as a potential method to this field, is improved in this paper. During the calculation process, the sparseness of the mixed matrix in this method is used to reduce the optimization dimension and enhance the evaluation accuracy. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed methods are verified through simulations and field case studies.

Abstract:In large-scale applications, parts of harmonic data are inevitably lost during transmission. This study presents an approach for the recovery of missing harmonic data based on the spectral graph theory. The proposed methodology involves graph theory for constructing a Laplacian matrix and a graph signal reconstruction function, the merging K-means algorithm for building a priori information model, and the accelerated segmentation Bregman iterative algorithm for solving the reconstruction function. Compared with existing methods on data recovery in power systems, the method maintains a good recovery accuracy when the data correlation of measurement units is low and the prior information is little. The proposed method has good anti-noise performances and low computational complexity. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through simulation and field recorded data.

Abstract:The estimation of electrical harmonic parameters by using the quasi-synchronization and interpolated FFT are introduced.The main factor of spectral leakage is conducted when the sampling would be non-synchronous.The computing formulas for the harmonic parameters are given based on the features of Hanning Window and Blackman Window.The computing formulas are given based on the method of quasi-synchronization as well.Simulation result demonstrates that the expected precision is achieved with the above three methods.Compared with the precision,error features with variable frequency and practicability of the algorithm,a suggestion is proposed in engineering practice.

Abstract:The problem of signal extraction from received data contaminated with strong chaotic interference has been investigated and a novel approach to this problem is proposed based on the geometry of chaotic interference. According to this approach, chaotic attractor is first reconstructed from the received data, then in the way of projecting chaotic interference and harmonic signals into the local tangent space and its transverse space of the manifold in which the attractor lies, the two signals are successfully separated. Excellent results were achieved from the computer simulation experiments, which verify the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract: Harmonic retrieval (HR) has a wide range of applications in the scenes where signals are modelled as a summation of sinusoids. Past works have developed a number of approaches to recover the original signals. Most of them rely on classical singular value decomposition, which are vulnerable to unexpected outliers. In this paper, we present new decomposition algorithms of third-order complex-valued tensors with $L_1$-principle component analysis ($L_1$-PCA) of complex data and apply them to a novel random access HR model in presence of outliers. We also develop a novel subcarrier recovery method for the proposed model. Simulations are designed to compare our proposed method with some existing tensor-based algorithms for HR. The results demonstrate the outlier-insensitivity of the proposed method.

Abstract:A self-adapting iterative algorithm for embedded inter-harmonics detecting applications was proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm constructed a Toeplitz matrix with observed data, and utilized preconditioning conjugate gradient method to solve optimized Yule-Walker equations based on the particularity of special approximate ARMA model. Hereby, the approximate values of AR parameters can be got by a self-adapting iterative process. A lot of simulations in different situations show the proposed algorithm is robust, high-performance and has limited time complexity. The simulations also give evidence of that the algorithm is highly suitable for embedded applications.

Abstract:The adaptive Gaussian representation(AGR), which has been used to extract par tial discharge (PD) signals from colored noises(CN), is proposed in this paper . Because AGR is a type of parametric joint Time-Frequency (T-F) analysis, whi ch uses more flexible T-F analytical windows, it can be immune from cross-term interference and filter out CN availably.AGR, which overcomes a shortage of con stant Q filter frame, can infinitely approximate to signals by conversation of energy. The power spectral density of CN existing in power system submits to Gaussian or non-Gaussian distributing, so it can not be filtered by wavelet tra nsform. Whereas AGR based on adaptive matching can approximate the signal closel y,it gets rid of disturbances effectively to make up the inaccuracy in signal de tection. The results of simulation show that AGR is an effective solution. The A GR will be widely used in detecting PD signals of power system.
Harmonic Retrieval Using Weighted Lifted-Structure Low-Rank Matrix Completion

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of recovering the frequency components of a mixture of $K$ complex sinusoids from a random subset of $N$ equally-spaced time-domain samples. Because of the random subset, the samples are effectively non-uniform. Besides, the frequency values of each of the $K$ complex sinusoids are assumed to vary continuously within a given range. For this problem, we propose a two-step strategy: (i) we first lift the incomplete set of uniform samples (unavailable samples are treated as missing data) into a structured matrix with missing entries, which is potentially low-rank; then (ii) we complete the matrix using a weighted nuclear minimization problem. We call the method a \emph{ weighted lifted-structured (WLi) low-rank matrix recovery}. Our approach can be applied to a range of matrix structures such as Hankel and double-Hankel, among others, and provides improvement over the unweighted existing schemes such as EMaC and DEMaC. We provide theoretical guarantees for the proposed method, as well as numerical simulations in both noiseless and noisy settings. Both the theoretical and the numerical results confirm the superiority of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper aims to address the phase retrieval problem from subgaussian measurements with arbitrary noise, with a focus on devising robust and efficient algorithms for solving non-convex problems. To ensure uniqueness of solutions in the subgaussian setting, we explore two commonly used assumptions: either the subgaussian measurements satisfy a fourth-moment condition or the target signals exhibit non-peakiness. For each scenario, we introduce a novel spectral initialization method that yields robust initial estimates. Building on this, we employ leave-one-out arguments to show that the classical Wirtinger flow algorithm achieves a linear rate of convergence for both real-valued and complex-valued cases, provided the sampling complexity $m\ge O(n \log^3 m)$, where $n$ is the dimension of the underlying signals. In contrast to existing work, our algorithms are regularization-free, requiring no truncation, trimming, or additional penalty terms, and they permit the algorithm step sizes as large as $O(1)$, compared to the $O(1/n)$ in previous literature. Furthermore, our results accommodate arbitrary noise vectors that meet certain statistical conditions, covering a wide range of noise scenarios, with sub-exponential noise as a notable special case. The effectiveness of our algorithms is validated through various numerical experiments. We emphasize that our findings provide the first theoretical guarantees for recovering non-peaky signals using non-convex methods from Bernoulli measurements, which is of independent interest.

Abstract:Under the homoscedastic Gaussian assumption, it has been shown that Fisherpsilas linear discriminant analysis (FLDA) suffers from the class separation problem when the dimensionality of subspace selected by FLDA is strictly less than the class number minus 1, i.e., the projection to a subspace tends to merge close class pairs. A recent result shows that maximizing the geometric mean of Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergences of class pairs can significantly reduce this problem. In this paper, to further reduce the class separation problem, the harmonic mean is applied to replace the geometric mean for subspace selection. The new method is termed maximization of the harmonic mean of all pairs of symmetric KL divergences (MHMD). As MHMD is invariant to rotational transformations, an efficient optimization procedure can be conducted on the Grassmann manifold. Thorough empirical studies demonstrate the effective of harmonic mean in dealing with the class separation problem.

Abstract:A neural network model named harmonic basis function(HBF) of multi-frequency periodic signals is proposed,and a harmonic analysis algorithm based on the HBF model is presented.In the supposed algorithm,the fundamental frequency and the harmonic amplitude-phase parameters are introduced as weights needed to be adjusted.The harmonic parameters are estimated through the adaptive measurement theorem.The convergence theorem of the algorithm provided theoretical guides for selecting of the learning rates.Simulations are conducted on the signals with frequency deviation as well as with white noises.The results show that the algorithm achieves high accuracy and rapid speed in convergence and is a good candidate for measuring the harmonics with asynchronous sampling and short data in power systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a speech reconstruction problem, which is efficiently solved via sparse representation. Though a variety of speech reconstruction methods based on the sparse representation are developed, they seldom take into account the intrinsic attributes of speech, e.g., harmonic structures. To address this issue, a harmonic-based sparse representation algorithm is proposed to emphasize harmonic correlations between the adjacent speech frames. Sequently, a corresponding sparse optimal model is presented with a harmonic regularization term, which can be efficiently solved in an iterative framework. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a better performance to improve the quality of the reconstructed speech than other traditional sparse representation methods.
