Abstract:Chemical vapor generation techniques have long been considered as important ways of sample introduction for analytical atomic spectrometry. In this paper, a low temperature plasma assisted chemical vapor generation method which avoids the massive use of consumptive chemical agents was proposed by using atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge. The plasma was generated by hydrogen doped argon gas flow through a quartz tube, serving as a dielectric barrier, which had a copper wire inner electrode and a copper foil outer electrode. An alternative high voltage was applied to electrodes to ignite and sustain the plasma. Sample solutions were converted to aerosol by a nebulizer and then mixed with the plasma to generate hydrides. To confirm the utility of this method, four hydride forming elements, As, Te, Sb and Se, were determined by coupling the low temperature plasma assisted chemical vapor generation system with an atomic fluorescence spectrometer. Responses of As, Te, Sb and Se were linear in the range of 0.5–20μgmL−1. The RSDs of As, Te, Sb and Se in the present method were less than 4.1% and the absolute detection limits for As, Te, Sb and Se were 0.6ng, 1.0ng, 1.4ng and 1.2ng, respectively. Furthermore, four arsenic species were determined after HPLC separation. The method is green and simple compared with hydride generation with tetrahydroborate and the most attractive characteristic is micro-sampling. In principle, the method offers potential advantages of miniaturization, less consumption and ease of automation.
Real-Time Trace Detection of Vapor Phase Elemental Mercury and Its Compounds

Abstract:The high toxicity of mercury species (elemental and compound) has prompted a demand for accurate, real-time inventory and control of their emissions. Our method of choice for mercury compound vapor is Photofragment Fluorescence spectroscopy. Target compound concentrations can be related to the fluorescence intensity from an excited fragment. Fragment identities and distributions, as revealed in the fluorescence spectrum provide information on the composition of the parent species. In the first experimental phase, a static cell (no flow) containing mercury compound (e.g. HgCl2) vapor was probed with a deep ultraviolet (UV) laser to generate characteristic spectra. An atmospheric pressure flow cell was used in the second stage. Limits-of-detection have been estimated. Detection schemes have included both photomultiplier tube (with interference filter) and charge-coupled-device camera (with monochromator). To reduce fluorescence quenching, we have expanded an argon gas stream containing Hg vapor through a micro-jet into a vacuum. The jet is crossed with a laser beam at 253.7 nm to excite atomic fluorescence, which is distinguished from the background by time gating.

Abstract:We reported novel Ag-TiO(2)- and ZrO(2)-based photocatalytic vapor generation (PCVG) systems as effective sample introduction techniques for further improving the sensitivity of the atomic spectrometric determination of selenium for the first time, in which the conduction band electron served as a "reductant" to reduce selenium species including Se(VI) and convert them directly into volatile H(2)Se, which was easily separated from the sample matrix and underwent more effectively subsequent atomization and/or ionization. These two PCVG systems helped us to overcome the problem encountered in the most conventional KBH(4)/OH(-)-H(+) system, in that Se(VI) was hardly converted into volatile selenium species without the aid of prereduction procedures. The limits of detection (LODs) (3σ) of the four most typical Se(IV), Se(VI), selenocystine ((SeCys)(2)), and selenomethionine (SeMet) species were, respectively, down to 1.2, 1.8, 7.4, and 0.9 ng mL(-1) in UV/Ag-TiO(2)-HCOOH, and 0.7, 1.0, 4.2, and 0.5 ng mL(-1) in UV/ZrO(2)-HCOOH with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 5.1% (n = 9 at 1 μg mL(-1)) when using atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) under flow injection mode. They reached 10, 14, 18, and 8 pg mL(-1) in UV/Ag-TiO(2)-HCOOH, and 6, 7, 10, and 5 pg mL(-1) in UV/ZrO(2)-HCOOH with the RSDs lower than 4.4% (n = 9 at 10 ng mL(-1)) when using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). After the two PCVG systems were validated using certified reference materials GBW(E)080395 and SELM-1, they were applied to determine the total Se in the selenium-enriched yeast sample and used as interfaces between high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and AFS or ICPMS for selenium speciation in the water- and/or enzyme-extractable fractions of the selenium-enriched yeast.

Abstract:A novel vapor-generation technique is described for mercury determination in aqueous solutions. Without need for a chemical reducing agent, dissolved mercury species are converted to volatile Hg vapor in a solution cathode glow discharge. The generated Hg vapor is then transported to an inductively coupled plasma for determination by atomic emission spectrometry. Mercury vapor is readily generated from a background electrolyte containing 0.1 M HNO 3. Vapor generation efficiency was found to be higher by a factor of 2-3 in the presence of low molecular weight organic acids (formic or acetic acids) or alcohols (ethanol). Optimal conditions for discharge-induced vapor generation and reduced interference from concomitant inorganic ions were also identified. However, the presence of chloride ion reduces the efficiency of Hg-vapor generation. In the continuous sample introduction mode, the detection limit was found to be 0.7 microg L (-1), and repeatability was 1.2% RSD ( n = 11) for a 20 microg L (-1) standard. In comparison with other vapor generation methods, it offers several advantages: First, it is applicable to both inorganic and organic Hg determination; organic mercury (thiomersal) can be directly transformed into volatile Hg species without the need for prior oxidation. Second, the vapor-generation efficiency is high; the efficiency (with formic acid as a promoter) is superior to that of conventional SnCl 2-HCl reduction. Third, the vapor generation is extremely rapid and therefore is easy to couple with flow injection. The method is sensitive and simple in operation, requires no auxiliary reagents, and serves as a useful alternative to conventional vapor generation for ultratrace Hg determination.

Abstract:A novel vapor dynamic headspace enrichment device was set up for nontarget screening of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water. The main operating parameters of this device, such as length of distillation tube, volume of collected condensate, and choice of absorbent, were optimized. In this device, vapor was utilized as a purge gas and water was utilized as a absorbent. With the help of the device, one liter of water sample could be concentrated to 5 mL and the sensitivity of traditional purge and trap-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (P&T-GC-MS) could be improved 1 - 2 orders of magnitude. Source and disinfected water samples from a water treatment plant were analyzed with this method. Compared with the traditional P&T-GC-MS analysis without pre-enrichment, the numbers of identified VOCs were improved from 0 to 16 for source water and 5 to 35 for disinfected water samples. It is also shown that there are many halide compounds in VOCs in disinfected water which do not exist in source water.

Abstract:Hydride generation (HG) was combined with an atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD), sustained in a completely novel system, to sensitively determine As, Sb, and Se by optical emission spectrometry (OES). The carrier gas with the analyte hydrides produced by chemical HG together with co-generated H 2 was introduced into the APGD system, where atomization and excitation processes took place. It was revealed that the essential factors responsible for the high stability of the plasma were its operating with He discharge gas (instead of Ar), operating the gas nozzle (used to introduce carrier He) as a cathode, and forcing the cathode spot to cover most of the surface of the gas nozzle. Under optimized operating conditions, the measurement repeatability was 2–3%, proving the high stability of the HG-APGD system. The detection limits (DLs) of As, Sb, and Se were 0.6, 0.14, and 1.2 μg L −1 , respectively, and compared to those previously reported for HG-APGD with liquid electrodes, the DLs were improved over 3 times. In addition to improved DLs, the novel system offered a simplified and more compact design. The accuracy of HG-APGD OES was verified using a recovery test and proved by high agreement between spiked and measured concentrations of As, Sb, and Se in mineral and tap water samples, reaching recoveries within the range of 96–103%.

Abstract:A low-power, atmospheric-pressure microplasma source based on a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) has been developed for use in atomic emission spectrometry. The small plasma (0.6 mm x 1 mm x 10 mm) is generated within a glass cell by using electrodes that do not contact the plasma. Powered by an inexpensive ozone generator, the discharge ignites spontaneously, can be easily sustained in Ar or He at gas flow rates ranging from 5 to 200 mL min(-1), and requires less than 1 W of power. The effect of operating parameters such as plasma gas identity, plasma gas flow rate, and residual water vapor on the DBD source performance has been investigated. The plasma can be operated without removal of residual water vapor, permitting it to be directly coupled with cold vapor generation sample introduction. The spectral background of the source is quite clean in the range from 200 to 260 nm with low continuum and structured components. The DBD source has been applied to the determination of Hg by continuous-flow, cold vapor generation and offers detection limits from 14 (He-DBD) to 43 pg mL(-1) (Ar-DBD) without removal of the residual moisture. The use of flow injection with the He-DBD permits measurement of Hg with a 7.2 pg limit of detection, and with repetitive injections having an RSD of < 2% for a 10 ng mL(-1) standard.

Abstract:A microfluidic system for introducing nanolitre sample in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using electrokinetic flow combined with hydrodynamic flow was developed, which consisted of a microfluidic chip, a syringe pump, a high voltage power supply, a homemade microflow nebulizer and a heated single pass spray chamber. In the microfluidic chip, the sample in the reservoir S automatically flew across the intersection P-1 to the reservoir SR under hydrodynamic pressure. Two porous polymer plugs C-1 and C-2 were created on the microchip to isolate electrokinetic flow from the pressure-driven flow. Once a high voltage between S and buffer reservoir B was applied, the sample was driven through the porous polymer plug C-1 into the metering channel by electrokinetic force. Simply changing the sampling time can freely optimize the sampling volume down to 0.18 nL, which was injected into the nebulizer by the pressure-driven makeup solution. The nanolitre sample introducing system has the advantages of low sample consumption, satisfactory precision, low sampling dead volume (0.38 nL) and low sampling dead time (0.42 s). The proposed system was successfully applied to determine platinum content in a serum sample of a cancer patient on cisplatin chemotherapy. The sample consumption of 1.8 nL was about 10(5) times less than that with the conventional sampling system. The sample throughput up to 112 h(-1) could be achieved with the detection limit of 64 ng L-1 for Pt-195. The content of Pt in the sample was 8.4 +/- 0.3 mu g L-1, agreeing well with that (8.5 +/- 0.3 mu g L-1) determined by the conventional sampling system.

Abstract:The atomization of hydride-forming elements, Se, Sb and Sn, has been studied with an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge atomizer. The elements were first converted to hydride through the reaction with NaBH4. Then the hydride were atomized in the atomizer and detected by atomic absorption spectrometry. The effects of operational parameters such as power, gas flow rate and concentrations of HCl and NaBH4 were investigated. Compared with other hydride atomization methods, the proposed atomizer shows the following features: (1) small size, which is preferable for the miniaturization of the total analytical system; (2) low temperature, which would be helpful for further improvement in the compactness of the total analytical system; (3) low power consumption, which is also necessary for the development of analytical instrumentation for in situ detection of environmentally important elements. The analytical performance of the atomizer has also been investigated. The detection limits of Sb, Se and Sn obtained with the present method were 13.0, 0.6 and 10.6 μg l−1. This detector is a very promising technique for hydride detection.

Abstract:The utilization of chemical vapor generation (CVG) as a sample introduction method for analytical atomic spectrometry has been an important subject of numerous studies for more than 50 years. For the past decade, several new types of CVG outperforming conventional hydride generation have been explored, which considerably promote the development of this technique in atomic spectrometric areas. The objective of the present review is to assimilate the recent advances of CVG in non-THB media, with special attention paid to photochemical vapor generation and plasma-induced vapor generation; and since a deep understanding in the mechanism of these CVGs is of utmost importance and broad interest to a sizable research community, the interpretation of the intermediates and resultant volatile products are also highlighted, along with characterization tools that could be beneficial for this purpose. We finally provide some insights into the directions for future CVG research for analytical chemistry.

On-line microplasma decomposition of gaseous phase interference for solid sampling mercury analysis in aquatic food samples

Abstract:In this work, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was first utilized to eliminate gaseous phase interference from complicated solid sample. So, a novel solid sampling Hg analyzer was first designed using a coaxial DBD reactor to replace catalytic pyrolysis furnace for sensitive mercury determination in aquatic food samples. The Hg analyzer mainly comprised an electrothermal vaporizer (ETV), a DBD reactor to decompose gaseous interfering substances including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a gold-coil Hg trap to eliminate matrix interference and an atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS) as detector. These units were connected by a manifold integrating air and Ar/H2 (v/v = 9 : 1), fulfilling on-line decomposition of up to 12 mg dried aquatic food powder at ambient temperature. The proposed method detection limit (LOD) was 0.5 μg/kg and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were within 5% for Hg standards as well as within 10% for real samples, indicating adequate analytical sensitivity and precision. In addition, the on-line DBD reactor consumes only 40 W, which is obviously lower than that (>300 W) of the commercial Hg analyzers; including the sample pre-treatment, the overall analysis could be completed within 5 min. This method is easier, greener and safer for Hg analysis in real samples obviating chemical reagents. The new DBD apparatus can facilitate the miniaturization and portability with low power consumption and instrumental size revealing its promising potential in direct Hg analysis instrumentation development.
Rapid Determination of Hg Isotopes in Low Concentration Water Samples by Flow Injection-Plasma Electrochemical Vapor Generation

Abstract:A new strategy for determining the Hg isotopes in low Hg concentration samples is proposed, utilizing the flow injection plasma electrochemical vapor generation (FI-PEVG) sampling technique coupled with MC-ICPMS. Our study reveals that PEVG technology not only offers superior sensitivity compared to that achieved by conventional cold vapor generation(CVG), but also reduces potential interferences/contaminations arising from reagents as it avoids the use of SnCl2, thus greatly facilitates the analysis of low content samples. By integrating with the FI technique, we can decrease the required sample volume to 0.15 mL (1.5 ng) and shorten the analysis time to just 150 s, resulting in significant reductions in sample consumption and analysis time. Different parameters affecting Hg isotope measurements were optimized, and the linear regression slope method was selected to process the transient Hg isotope signals. Under the optimized conditions, the δ202Hg and Δ199Hg values achieved a precision of 0.05 ‰ and 0.04 ‰ (SD, n = 33), respectively. The efficacy of our strategy is demonstrated by analyzing spiked natural water samples and several reference materials (GBW 08617, GBW(E) 080124). While few number of low Hg concentration samples have been analyzed in this study, it is believed that the proposed method provides a promising rapid and sensitive approach for accurate Hg isotope analyses of low-content samples.

Abstract:A flameless atomizer for atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS), based on an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge, has been developed for the atomization of hydride-forming elements, such as Se, Sb and Pb. The atomizer (8 mm o.d, 35 mm length) was operated at a power less than 50 W. The discharge was sustained with argon at the flow rate of 0.85 L min− 1 after optimization. The characteristics of the atomizer and the effects of different parameters (power, gas flow rate, and KBH4 concentration) are investigated. The most attractive feature of this atomizer is its low operation temperature (~ 52 °C, detected at the outlet of the atomizer by a thermocouple), allowing both the radiation source and the detector to be placed in close proximity with the atomizer. The analytical performance of the atomizer has been evaluated, and detection limits for Se, Sb and Pb obtained with the present technique were 0.08, 0.11 and 0.27 μg L− 1, respectively. The accuracy of the system was verified by the determination of Se, Sb and Pb in reference material of spinage GBW 10015. The concentrations of Se, Sb, and Pb determined by the present technique agreed well with the reference values (Se: 92 ± 24 mg kg− 1, Sb: 43 ± 14 mg kg− 1, Pb: 11.1 ± 0.9 mg kg− 1). This detector is very promising for field elements detection with portable AFS.
Electrochemical hydride generation for the simultaneous determination of hydride forming elements by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry

Abstract:Simultaneous measurements of As, Sb, Se, Sn and Ge were performed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry following their electrochemical hydride generation. An electrochemical hydride generator based on a concentric arrangement with a porous cathode, working in a continuous flow mode was used. The effects of sample flow rate, applied current and electrolytic solution concentration on response were studied and their influence on the mechanisms of hydride generation discussed. Four materials, particulate lead, reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC), silver and amalgamated silver were tested as cathode materials. The best results were achieved with particulate lead and RVC cathodes, wherein generation efficiencies higher than 80% were estimated for most of the analytes. In general, limits of detection between 0.1 and 3.6 ng ml−1 and a precision better than 5% were achieved using a lead cathode. The analysis of a marine sediment reference material (PACS-2, NRC) showed good agreement with the certified values for As and Se.

Abstract:A flow injection-electrochemical hydride generation technique for atomic absorption spectrometry has been developed in order to avoid the use of sodium tetrahydroborate, which is capable of introducing contamination. A specially designed thin-layer electrolytic flow cell for hydride generation was used in a normal flow injection system coupled to an electrically heated T-tube atomizer for the atomic absorption measurements. About 200-mu-l of sample were injected into the electrolyte carrier stream flowing to the electrolytic cell, where hydride-forming elements were reduced to gaseous hydrides. The effects of various factors, e.g., electrode material, electrolyte, current density and carrier stream flow rate, on rate of formation of the hydride and interferences have been studied. The technique has been applied to the determination of As, Se and Sb in various samples. The detection limits for these elements in aqueous solutions were 0.45, 0.62 and 0.92 ng ml-1, respectively, with precisions of 1.2-1.8%.
