Abstract:As one of the most common failure types of arch bridges, stability is one of the critical aspects for the design of arch bridges. Using 3D finite element model in ABAQUS, this paper has studied the stability performance of an arch bridge with inclined arch ribs and hangers, and the analysis also took the effects of geometrical and material nonlinearity into account. The impact of local buckling and residual stress of steel plates on global stability and the applicability of fiber model in stability analysis for steel arch bridges were also investigated. The results demonstrate an excellent stability of the arch bridge because of the transverse constraint provided by transversely-inclined hangers. The distortion of cross section, local buckling and residual stress of ribs has an insignificant effect on the stability of the structure, and the accurate ultimate strength may be obtained from a fiber model analysis. This study also shows that the yielding of the arch ribs has a significant impact on the ultimate capacity of the structure, and the bearing capacity may also be approximately estimated by the initial yield strength of the arch rib.

Abstract:Many engineering and biological materials have been found to have tension–compression asymmetry properties. An extension of the linear thermoelastic behavior called a bi-modulus constitutive model is proposed to study the impact of thermo-mechanical coupling in such materials and structures. The well-posedness of the corresponding bi-modulus thermoelasticity problems is confirmed via a variational approach. An efficient numerical analysis method is developed for such nontrivial material behavior and is further employed for structural topology optimization. The importance of the proposed analysis and design framework is demonstrated by the significant impact of the tension–compression asymmetry and thermal effect on structural responses and optimum structural configurations.

Abstract:Many man-made or natural objects are composed of symmetric parts and possess symmetric physical behavior. Although its shape can exactly follow a symmetry in the designing or modeling stage, its discretized mesh in the analysis stage may be asymmetric because generating a mesh exactly following the symmetry is usually costly. As a consequence, the expected symmetric physical behavior may not be faithfully reproduced due to the asymmetry of the mesh. To solve this problem, we propose to optimize the material parameters of the mesh for static and kinematic symmetry behavior. Specifically, under the situation of static equilibrium, Young’s modulus is properly scaled so that a symmetric force field leads to symmetric displacement. For kinematics, the mass is optimized to reproduce symmetric acceleration under a symmetric force field. To efficiently measure the deviation from symmetry, we formulate a linear operator whose kernel contains all the symmetric vector fields, which helps to characterize the asymmetry error via a simple ℓ2 norm. To make the resulting material suitable for the general situation, the symmetric training force fields are derived from modal analysis in the above kernel space. Results show that our optimized material significantly reduces the asymmetric error on an asymmetric mesh in both static and dynamic simulations.

Abstract:An optimization model is presented for obtaining optimal layout of multiple bi-modulus materials systems under multiple load cases (MLC). In the optimization model, the objective function is the linearly weighted structural compliance under MLC. The bi-modulus materials in a finite element are replaced by isotropic materials according to the stress state of that element. The equivalent mechanical properties of an element are expressed as the power–law function of the volume fractions (design variables) and moduli of the solid phases. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the validity and efficiency of the present algorithm. The effects of factors including the bi-modulus behavior of materials, the load directions and the weighting schemes of MLC are also investigated numerically.

Abstract:Reliability analysis and reliability-based design optimization of large scale box-girder structural system is an interesting topic in the field of structural design. Structural resistance, loading, plating thickness and cross-sectional area of beam are considered as stochastic variables. Safety margin equations of both beam and plate element are constructed. Since the safety margin equations are implicit function of random variables, the stochastic finite element method (SFEM) is adequate for sensitivity analysis. The advanced first order second moment (AFOSM) method is used to calculate the safety indices of structural components. In addition to this, branch and bound method is used to identify the dominant failure paths. Probabilistic Network Evaluation Technique (PNET) method is used to assess failure probability of structural system. The optimization problem of structure is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem that aims at minimizing structural weight with constraints on reliability and range constraints of design variables. An optimum vector algorithm is applied to solve the optimization problem. One illustrative example is carried out to elucidate present process of reliability assessment and reliability-based design optimization.

Abstract:Tolerance is defined by graphic example and text description in the national standard and is not adaptable for expressing, processing and transferring in computers. It is essential for the integration of CAD and CAM and how to interpret its semantics is becoming a focus. Research on tolerance of mathematical model has been the topic of active research in recent years. But the models seldom consider the tolerancing principle. Thus an improven mathematical model based on independence principle (IP) and maximum material requirement (MMR) was proposed for linear symmetry tolerance. Small displacement torsor(SDT) was introduced in tolerance modeling. The constraint conditions of linear symmetry tolerance were developed systematically under IP and MMR. The corresponding mathematical models of linear symmetry of surface feature and central feature were deduced. The models can interpret the semantics of symmetry tolerance exactly and completely and can be used with the following processing. It's very important applications for seamless integration of CAD and CAM.

Abstract:The flexural-torsional buckling of arches has been investigated theoretically by a number of authors.But most papers are restricted to double- symmetric cross- sections.Starting from warping displacement for arbitrary thin- walled curved beams in Ref.[1],the principle of energy is applied to derive the differential equation of stability for mono- symmetric I- section arches.Rigorous solutions are obtained for arches subjected to uniformly distributed radial load as well as to equal and opposite end moments.Effects of different laying positions and of asymmetry of cross-section on buckling loads are included.The solutions are compared with previous theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper studies reliability analysis of structures with multiple failure modes. The analysis consists of three parts. First, the memetic animal migration optimization algorithm, applied for multiple optimum points detection in a multimodal optimization problem, is used to search for the most probable points of the limit state functions of main failure modes. Next, the multi-point first-order reliability method is used to estimate the failure probability of structures with multiple failure modes. Last, the saddlepoint approximation based second-order reliability method is further extended to system reliability analysis, aiming to improve the accuracy of system reliability prediction.

Abstract:Estimating system reliability has been recognized as a critical step in reliability-based design optimization for structural systems. The estimation of system reliability entails multi-dimensional integration, which is very difficult and numerically expensive. The proposed hybrid method integrates the concepts of saddlepoint approximation, the dimension reduction method (DRM) and copulas. The moment-based saddlepoint approximation enhanced by the DRM is used to calculate the component reliability. The copula method is adopted to realize the joint failure probability modelling between two failure modes. Reliability-based sensitivity analysis for the reliability-based robust design optimization is carried out as well. The structural system optimization model is established, including the Euclid norm of the reliability sensitivity as an optimization objective and system reliability as a constraint. Examples demonstrate that the optimization results obtained by the proposed approach ensure the maximization of the robustness of the structural system.

Abstract:In the domain of civil engineering, the structures encountered usually present symmetries of different types. The causes that determine the use of these symmetries are diverse, starting from esthetic motivations but also dictated by practical reasons, such as the reduction in construction time and costs. These geometric symmetries lead to specific properties that, in certain situations, can help to simplify the calculation of these structures. They can be identified both in the static analysis and the deformability of the structure, as well as in the dynamic analysis in the study of vibrations. If these properties are used, it is possible to reduce the analysis time, and the designer can obtain a quick estimate of the behavior of the structure. Starting from these considerations, this work will determine some of the properties specific to the natural vibrations of certain structures with identical parts in their components (structures that present two planes of symmetry) and will demonstrate how these properties can contribute to reducing the time required for dynamic analysis. An example will be used to exemplify the presented methods. This work allows for further developments and makes possible the development of the existing finite element software by adding some modules to identify such situations by analyzing the input data and using the properties described in the newly introduced algorithms.

Abstract:Summary A new nonprobabilistic reliability‐based topology optimization method for continuum structures with displacement constraints is proposed in this paper, in which the optimal layout consists of solid material and truss‐like microstructure material simultaneously. The unknown‐but‐bounded uncertainties that exist in material properties, external loads, and safety displacements are considered. By utilizing the representative volume element analysis, rules of macro‐micro stiffness performance equivalence can be confirmed. A solid material and truss‐like microstructure material structure integrated design interpolation model is firstly constructed, in which design domain elements can be conducted to select solid material or truss‐like microstructure material by a combination of the finite element method in the topology optimization process. Moreover, a new nonprobabilistic reliability measuring index, namely, the optimization feature distance is defined by making use of the area‐ratio ideas. Furthermore, the adjoint vector method is employed to obtain the sensitivity information between the reliability measure and design variables. By utilizing the method of moving asymptotes, the investigated optimization problem can be iteratively solved. The effectiveness of the developed methodology is eventually demonstrated by two examples.

Abstract:The main objective of this article is to develop a methodology for the efficient calculation of buckling loads for frame structures having high-order symmetry properties in order to reduce the size of their associated eigenvalue problems. This is achieved by decomposing the second-order stiffness matrix of a symmetric model into submatrices using a representation of its symmetry group, via a step-by-step approach. The physical interpretation of the resulting submatrices is shown as substructures (factors), and the possibility of further decomposition is then investigated for each of the constructed submodels. Due to the similarity in transformation, the constructed submatrices contain the eigenvalues of the main structural matrix. The buckling load of the entire structure is obtained by calculating the buckling loads of its factors. The methods of the present paper provide a mathematical foundation and a logical means to deal with symmetry instead of looking for various boundary conditions to be imposed for symmetric structures, as in the traditional methods. Examples are provided to illustrate the simplicity and efficiency of the present method.

Reanalysis of Structures with Modification of Boundary Constraints

Abstract:The optimal layout of boundary constraints is one of the key factors that dominate static performances of the structure. The repeated analyses required in design and optimization of the location of boundary constraints are difficult because the imposition or release of boundary constraints change the number of degrees of freedom of structures. This paper deals with reanalysis of structures with modifica- tion of boundary constraints. A successive matrix inversion (SMI) method is developed and an efficient reanalysis algorithm is presented for such a problem. The symmetry of modified structural stiffness matrix is sufficiently utilized in the algorithm. Exact solution can be achieved by the proposed method. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Mechanics Based Design of Structures and Machines

Abstract:The reliability-based design optimization looks for the best compromise between safety and cost taking into account uncertainties in the structure. This methodology does not only provide an improved design but also a high level of confidence. As a result, the reliability analysis is integrated in the optimization loop in order to improve the performance of the structure while maintaining the assumed reliability level. For that reason, several formulations, such as optimum safety factor method and hybrid method (HM) are developed to reach this purpose. These methods have been applied only to linear materials. However, nowadays, there are increasing interests in the use of nonlinear materials such as shape memory alloy. In this context, this article proposes an extension of these approaches in the case of nonlinear material in order to study their efficiency. A method called robust hybrid method is proposed to overcome the problem of classical hybrid one. A numerical application is then used in order to present the advantages of the modified HM for treating the problem of structures with nonlinear material.Communicated by Janos Logo.
Finite Strain Topology Optimization with Nonlinear Stability Constraints

Abstract:This paper proposes a computational framework for the design optimization of stable structures under large deformations by incorporating nonlinear buckling constraints. A novel strategy for suppressing spurious buckling modes related to low-density elements is proposed. The strategy depends on constructing a pseudo-mass matrix that assigns small pseudo masses for DOFs surrounded by only low-density elements and degenerates to an identity matrix for the solid region. A novel optimization procedure is developed that can handle both simple and multiple eigenvalues wherein consistent sensitivities of simple eigenvalues and directional derivatives of multiple eigenvalues are derived and utilized in a gradient-based optimization algorithm - the method of moving asymptotes. An adaptive linear energy interpolation method is also incorporated in nonlinear analyses to handle the low-density elements distortion under large deformations. The numerical results demonstrate that, for systems with either low or high symmetries, the nonlinear stability constraints can ensure structural stability at the target load under large deformations. Post-analysis on the B-spline fitted designs shows that the safety margin, i.e., the gap between the target load and the 1st critical load, of the optimized structures can be well controlled by selecting different stability constraint values. Interesting structural behaviors such as mode switching and multiple bifurcations are also demonstrated.

Global Structural Optimization of 3D Models Based on Modal Analysis

Abstract:Traditional structural optimization methods require predefined load conditions. The resulting structure is optimal under the given condition, but can be weak under different loads. Objects can suffer from various forc-es in practical applications. The overall performance of objects cannot be guaranteed and thus more material than actually needed is used. In this work we propose a novel approach to enhance the global strength of 3D objects under all possible load distribution, which make the strength of the object isotropic to resist different forces. The method is based on modal analysis. We first detect the weak region of the object and then reinforce it by optimiz-ing the eigenvalue of the stiffness matrix. Based on the concept of Rayleigh Quotient, an efficient algorithm is also presented. Experiments show that our method can effectively improve the global strength of 3D objects.

Abstract:Buckling resistance has gained significant attention in topology optimization due to its profound implications for structural designs. Despite considerable research on buckling-constrained topology optimization, maximizing the critical buckling load factor (BLF) still remains a challenging topic. In this study, an innovative algorithm that utilizes a linear material interpolation scheme is introduced to maximize the buckling resistance of structures. The linear material model offers several advantages, such as obviating the need to select the penalization schemes and penalty values, facilitating straightforward sensitivity analysis, and removing the ambiguous physical meaning of penalization for the stress stiffness matrix. The accuracy of the linear material model for buckling analysis is systematically examined, and the avoidance of stress singularities in low-density regions is investigated. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach are supported by four buckling optimization design examples, which also demonstrate substantial improvements compared to the existing algorithms.

Fundamental problem in optimizing the biaxial testing specimen

Abstract:Most of the elements in structural design are subjected to the complex loading conditions that need to be predicted in advance for a reliable design. The failure prediction of these structural elements is based on the failure theories that employ the experimental data of the uniaxial, the biaxial and the shear tests. Among these tests, the biaxial testing is used to model the behavior of the structure loaded in more than one direction. In this study, we discover an interesting fact for the biaxial tension specimen that the thickness reduction of the measuring region cannot increase the stress to a high level. This behavior of the biaxial testing is different from the uniaxial testing where the thickness reduction of the measuring region always increases its stress to a higher level. Therefore, we further investigate the biaxial testing specimen via related fundamental problem, i.e., an axisymmetric plate with varying thickness under axisymmetric tension. We perform the shape optimization based on our analytical solution and the FEM results. For an infinite axisymmetric disk, the optimized design should include a low slope diverging section connecting the inner to outer region. On the contrary, the larger inner measuring region for finite axisymmetric disk would result in higher corresponding stress. These conclusions can be used as a guideline for the design of a biaxial testing specimen.
Influence of Distributed Axisymmetrical Imperfections on Buckling Reliability of Thin Walled Cylindrical Shells

Abstract:To analyze the influences of distributed axisymmetrical imperfection parameters on thin wall cylindrical shell buckling reliability,the authors derived an equivalent safety margin for thin walled cylindrical shells with an initial distributed axisymmetrical imperfection,using Budiansky's critical solution and advanced first order second moment(AFOSM).The influence of random imperfection parameters of the initial distributed axisymmetrical imperfection on the buckling reliability of thin walled cylindrical shells was then analyzed with the AFOSM method.Structural sensitivity was analyzed using the conception of structural reliability.The sensitivity of the structure to imperfections was reflected indirectly by variation in the structural reliability index.This indicates that the proposed method of evaluating buckling safety of imperfect thin wall cylindrical shells based on structural reliability is reasonable.The equivalent safety margin method proposed here may be a reference when considering complex safety margins and simplified structural safety evaluations.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new constitutive model named general weighted flexibility matrix (GWFMM) material model for the analysis of structures made of bi-modulus orthotropic material in complex three-dimensional stress state. The material properties of the GWFMM model are assigned according to the positive–negative signs and magnitudes of the principal material stresses. General analysis modules of the orthotropic materials with different moduli of elasticity in tension and compression are developed. Comparing with Bert’s model for laminated materials, GWFMM model can obtain more accurate mechanical response of structures in complex three-dimensional stress states.
