Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. However, the sluggish kinetics and accumulated gas slugs under the industrial operation condition limit the application of OER. Herein, Mn, Fe co-doped nickel hydroxide with highly dense nano-sheets array is obtained through a simple and mild two-step etching strategy, which exhibits a remarkable OER performance. Doping Mn and Fe can modulate the electronic structure and redox behavior of active site, leading to an excellent intrinsic activity toward OER. Moreover, highly dense nanoparticle-nanosheet array structure is conducive to provide more active sites and inhibit the accumulation of gas slugs under industrial current density. Thus, the obtained catalyst provides an impressing current density of 1.8 A cm(-2) at a small overpotential of 370 mV and sustains the performance more than 100 h.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction is a crucial means to support the conversion and storage of the sustainable renewable energy. Low-crystallinity can offer short-range structural ordering and high active site density. In this work, an efficient self-supported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst, cobalt iron layered double hydroxide (LDH) grown on Ti3C2 modified nickel foam (NF) heterostructure anode (CoFe-LDH/Ti3C2/NF) was prepared using electrodeposition. The exceptional electrocatalytic OER performance is ensured by in situ decorating monolayer Ti3C2/NF (s-Ti3C2/NF) with low-crystallinity CoFe nanospheres. By harnessing the low crystallinity, well-chosen composition and reasonable heterostructure, the overpotential of CoFe-LDH/Ti3C2/NF decreases to 246mV at a current density of 10mA·cm-2 in alkaline media. After 3000 cyclic voltammograms cycles, the ignorable increase in overpotential of 14mV suggest the excellent long circular stability. Moreover, an accelerated reaction kinetics is implied by the smaller Tafel slope (28.76mV·dec-1) and higher double-layer specific capacitance (2.33 mF·cm-2), which surpassed the counterparts CoFe-LDH grown on NF (CoFe-LDH/NF) and s-Ti3C2/NF. This work paves a new way to fabricate the low-crystallinity materials for electrocatalysis and energy storage.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an essential process during electrochemical water -splitting. Due to its sluggish kinetics, low cost and highly efficient catalyst is invariably desired to decrease its overpotential for large-scale application. However, the overpotential of most advanced OER electrocatalysts is still more than 200 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2. In this work, we constructed active layered NiFe double hydroxides with cation defects on self-supported three-dimensional (3D) CoNi nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube composite substrate as integrated OER catalyst. Strikingly, electrochemical measurements showed that the optimized sample exhibited outstanding OER activity with low overpotentials of 178 and 268 mV at the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline environment, alongside a good durability. The excellent OER performance was ascribed to the strongly synergistic effect of intrinsically active NiFe double hydroxide layers with abundant cation vacancies and 3D carbon nanotube composite substrate with good conductivity and various functional moieties, thus facilitating the electrocatalytic kinetic.(c) 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:Nickel/iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) represents a promising electrocatalyst for the challenging oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet the precise role of iron (Fe) in enhancing its activity remains unclear. Herein, we conduct a comprehensive investigation aimed at unraveling the influence of Fe incorporation on the atomic environments and electronic structure of NiFe-LDH, with the ultimate goal of establishing a correlation between these factors and elucidating the mechanisms by which Fe amplifies the OER performance. Our findings reveal that Fe dopants induce weakening of the nickel (Ni)-oxygen (O) coordination, and then generate abundant oxygen vacancies (OV), which can mediate the electron transfer from Fe to Ni and finally result in electron localization at the Ni centers. The electron localization around Ni leads to the creation of a new energy level near the Fermi level and the formation of an electron-rich structure, resulting in a favorable electronic conductivity and reaction kinetics. The optimal NiFe-LDH sample exhibits an extraordinary electrocatalytic performance, requiring ultra-low overpotentials of only 189 and 248 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The comprehensive understanding obtained from this study can guide future design of high-performance NiFe-LDH-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) is one of the most promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. However, it is still challenging to design NiFe LDH with both high activity and good stability. Herein, NiFe LDH-Ni(iii)Li is synthesized by a facile approach through valence control of Ni ions and selective doping of Li. Ni(iii) ion percentage is significantly increased from less than 60% to 72.5% in the LDH thanks to the combined benefits of electrochemical oxidation, Mo-leaching and Li-doping. The catalytic activity of NiFe LDH-Ni(iii)Li is greatly promoted because the e(g) electron occupancy of Ni3+ approaches one, producing optimal bond strength with O. Moreover, density functional theory calculations reveal that Li-doping reduces the adsorption energy difference between *OOH and *OH from 3.16 eV to 2.79 eV by the stabilization of *OOH, decreasing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step by 0.29 eV. At the same time, higher covalency of Ni-O bonds results from the enlarged overlap between Ni 3d and O 2p orbitals, further enhancing the OER kinetics. Consequently, NiFe LDH-Ni(iii)Li exhibits excellent OER performance (overpotential of 248 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) on a flat current collector). This work provides a promising technique for engineering the electronic structure of LDH toward outstanding OER properties.

Abstract:NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) have been regarded as significant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their overpotential must still be further reduced to enable commercial applications. Herein, a promising and highly effective "hydroxyl ions hungry" electrode structure was prepared for the first time via a two-step hydrothermal reaction procedure to enhance the surface adsorption kinetics to obtain an ultralow overpotential. The electrode exhibits OER activity with ultralow overpotentials of 203 mV and 293 mV at the current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, in 1.0 M KOH. These results reveal an important way to improve the catalytic performance in an alkaline medium.

Abstract:A highly active electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is very important to reduce energy consumption in large-scale water-splitting. Herein, we prepared the NiFe layered-double-hydroxide (LDH) decorated with Fe-doped NiSe nanosheet on nickel foam ((Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF) by a three-step method. The hierarchical (Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF exhibit outstanding OER properties in an alkaline medium. The overpotential at 100 mA/cm(2) and Tafel slope of (Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF is 253 mV and 47 mV/dec, respectively. The hierarchical (Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF shows good long-term stability. The outstanding OER performance is attributed to the Fe doping, fast charge transfer and the synergistic interaction between (Ni, Fe)Se and NiFe-LDH. Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is the primary method to produce green hydrogen, which is considered an efficient alternative to fossil fuels for achieving carbon neutrality. For meeting the increasing market demand for green hydrogen, high-efficiency, low-cost, and large-scale electrocatalysts are crucial. In this study, we report a simple spontaneous corrosion and cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation method to fabricate Zn-incorporated NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) on commercial NiFe foam, which shows excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. The electrocatalyst achieves an overpotential of 565 mV and outstanding stability of up to 112 h at 400 mA cm −2 . The active layer for OER is shown to be β-NiFeOOH according to the results of in-situ Raman. Our findings suggest that the NiFe foam treated by simple spontaneous corrosion has promising industrial applications as a highly efficient OER catalyst.

Abstract:Developing high-efficiency and steady nickel-iron based catalysts are of great significance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the rarity of active sites exposed to electrolytes is difficult, limiting their OER properties. Herein, an innovative double-etch strategy has been developed to synthesize Fe– nanosheet supported on nickel foam. Where NH 4 + was applied to change the morphology of precursor (NiNH 4 PO 4 ) from one-dimensional (1D) to two-dimensional (2D) to expose a larger solution contact area and the etch of OH − thinned the layered structure in the process of transforming Fe–NiNH 4 PO 4 for Fe-β-Ni(OH) 2 . And the double etching strategy makes Fe– possess excellent electrocatalytic OER performance, when reaching the current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm −2 , the obtained catalytic materials only required a low overpotential of 260 and 320 mV, respectively. Meanwhile, the stability of the structure was also verified in strong corrosion environment (1 M KOH), and the catalytic activity presents unattenuated after stable operation at 100 mA cm −2 for 80 h. Density functional theory (DFT) confirmed that the optimized adsorption intermediates and conductivity were the keys to the better performance. The morphology control strategy of this work provided a significant reference for the improved OER properties of transition metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:Currently, engineering non-precious NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) electrocatalysts with excellent oxygen evolution performances at high current densities is highly critical to promoting electrolytic water splitting producing hydrogen for large-scale commercial applications. Herein, an intrigued oxygen vacancy-rich Fe(Ⅱ)-incorporated NiFe-LDH containing electroactive high-valence ferritic species is successfully grown on Ni foam (Fe2+-NiFe-LDH-EO6 ) through an elaborate two-step route including hydrothermal and electrooxidation, and utilized as a high-efficiency elctrocayalyst of alkaline water oxidation possessing abundant exposed active sites, excellent intrinsic catalytic activity and superior durability. Therefore, the Fe2+-NiFe-LDH-EO6 electrocatalyst towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) enables the low overpotentials of 239, 285 and 350 mV for the current densities of 10, 100 and 500 mA cm-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 48.3 mV dec-1, the low onset potential of 1.451 V, and retains the catalytic activity for 40 h at the large current density of 500 mA cm-2 as well as owns the high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 0.93 s-1 at the overpotential of 300 mV. This work provides a promising avenue to improve the OER performances of NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst for practical applications.

Abstract:The poor conductivities and instabilities of accessible nickel oxyhydroxides hinder their use as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we constructed Fe-NiOOH-OV-600, an Fe-doped nickel oxide hydroxide with abundant oxygen vacancies supported on nickel foam (NF), using a hydrothermal method and an electrochemical activation strategy involving 600 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, assisted by the precipitation/dissolution equilibrium of ferrous sulfide (FeS) in the electrolyte. This two-step method endows the catalyst with abundant Fe-containing active sites while maintaining the ordered structure of nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH). Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that synergy between trace amounts of the Fe dopant and the oxygen vacancies not only promotes the generation of reconstructed active layers but also optimizes the electronic structure and adsorption capacity of the active sites. Consequently, the as-prepared Fe-NiOOH-OV-600 delivered large current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm-2 for the OER at overpotentials of only 253 and 333 mV in 1 mol/L KOH. Moreover, the catalyst is stable for at least 100 h at 500 mA cm-2. This work provides insight into the design of efficient transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for the OER.

Abstract:Rational design and controlled fabrication of efficient and cost-effective electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical for addressing the unprecedented energy crisis. Nickel–iron layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) with specific interlayer anions (i.e. phosphate, phosphite, and hypophosphite) were fabricated by a co-precipitation method and investigated as oxygen evolution electrocatalysts. Intercalation of the phosphorus oxoanion enhanced the OER activity in an alkaline solution; the optimal performance (i.e., a low onset potential of 215 mV, a small Tafel slope of 37.7 mV/dec, and stable electrochemical behavior) was achieved with the hypophosphite-intercalated NiFe-LDH catalyst, demonstrating dramatic enhancement over the traditional carbonate-intercalated NiFe-LDH in terms of activity and durability. This enhanced performance is attributed to the interaction between the intercalated phosphorous oxoanions and the edge-sharing MO6 (M = Ni, Fe) layers, which modifies the surface electronic structure of the Ni sites. This concept should be inspiring for the design of more effective LDH-based oxygen evolution electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Nickel-iron bimetal compounds have shown to be efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline environment. Here, we report the outstanding OER performance of an iron doped nickel layered silicate (Ni 1- x Fe x ) 3 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4 ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4), which was synthesized via a combined co-precipitation and hydrothermal method. The doping Fe ions are found to have a stronger adsorption effect on the *O intermediate, thereby reducing the energy barrier for the potential determining step *OH → *O, and as a result greatly enhance the OER activity of nickel layered silicate. At Fe doping concentration of 30 mol%, a minimum OER overpotential of 286 mV is achieved at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 without IR correction, 86 mV lower than that of undoped catalyst. Moreover, the catalyst maintains favorable OER stability over a 24-hour chronopotentiometry test in 1 M KOH. This work provides insights into exploration and design of metal silicate-based OER catalysts.
