Abstract:NiFe LDH (Layered Double Hydroxide) is a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen release reaction (OER), which is currently receiving more and more attention. Here, we propose a simple method to enhance the OER activity of NiFe LDH supported on Super P. The NiFe LDH@Super P catalyst with a nanoflower nanostructure was successfully synthesized via pre-hydrothermal treatment method, which ensures the normal nucleation process of the highly active NiFe LDH precursor and significantly promote the full contact of NiFe LDH and Super P in the three-dimensional space. The as synthesized NiFe LDH@Super P-2h sample exhibited excellent OER performances in alkaline media, and the overpotential is only 260 mV at a current density of 10 mA · cm-2. The outstanding OER electrocatalytic reaction performance is attributed to the unique three-dimensional nanoflower structure and excellent composite effect with Super P, which provides more specific surface areas and enables efficient transfer of electrons between them. This research work provides a simple and effective method for developing non-precious metal-based OER catalysts to replace expensive precious metal catalysts.

Abstract:The poor conductivities and instabilities of accessible nickel oxyhydroxides hinder their use as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we constructed Fe-NiOOH-OV-600, an Fe-doped nickel oxide hydroxide with abundant oxygen vacancies supported on nickel foam (NF), using a hydrothermal method and an electrochemical activation strategy involving 600 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, assisted by the precipitation/dissolution equilibrium of ferrous sulfide (FeS) in the electrolyte. This two-step method endows the catalyst with abundant Fe-containing active sites while maintaining the ordered structure of nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH). Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that synergy between trace amounts of the Fe dopant and the oxygen vacancies not only promotes the generation of reconstructed active layers but also optimizes the electronic structure and adsorption capacity of the active sites. Consequently, the as-prepared Fe-NiOOH-OV-600 delivered large current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm-2 for the OER at overpotentials of only 253 and 333 mV in 1 mol/L KOH. Moreover, the catalyst is stable for at least 100 h at 500 mA cm-2. This work provides insight into the design of efficient transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for the OER.

Abstract:Bimetallic doping is widely used to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of layered transition metal oxyhydroxides. However, the synergistic enhancement effect of different doping elements on the intrinsic OER activity is still obscure. In this study, the FeNi-codoped cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) as OER electrocatalyst was prepared successfully by simple electrodeposition and anodic oxidation methods, which exhibits superior OER activity to the single-metal doped CoOOH systems. Based on both experiments and first-principles calculations, the results show that the reaction kinetics enhance due to the codoping of Fe and Ni. Fe-doping changes the active site from Co to Fe and enhances the hydroxyl group adsorption. Ni doping benefits the electron transfer between Fe and intermediates, thereby enhancing the Feâ€“O covalent component to further balance the two steps of hydroxyl group adsorption and the deprotonation step. The essential mechanism of bimetal-doping in CoOOH provides theoretical support for the design and development of bimetal-doped Co-based OER catalysts.

Abstract:The search for highly efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts is crucial to the advancement of environmentally friendly and sustainable energy sources. Here, adopting a one-step hydrothermal method, we have effectively fabricated a self-supported multi-metal molybdenum-based oxide (FeCoNi-MoO4) on nickel foam (NF). In addition to changing the catalyst's microstructure, the introducing of Fe and Co, enhanced its active center count, improved its electronic structure, and in turn reduced the difficulty for high-valence Ni and Fe species to form, which accelerates the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics by promoting the development of the actual active materials, NiOOH and FeOOH. FeCoNi-MoO4 has outstanding OER performance, requiring just 204 mV overpotentials at 10 mA cm-2 and 271 mV at 100 mA cm-2. Its exceptional OER kinetics at both low and high currents are indicated by a Tafel slope of 50.6 mV dec-1, which is attributed to the combined effect of its multi-metal composition and a higher number of active sites. Moreover, the FeCoNi-MoO4 electrode was operated continuously for over 48 h. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) results demonstrated that the introducing of Fe and Co, which quickens the rate of electron transfer during the electrocatalytic process, improves the ability of oxygen intermediate species to adsorb, and ultimately lowers the overpotential, is responsible for the increased electrocatalytic activity of FeCoNi-MoO4. This work offers hope for further developments in the sector by proposing an efficient approach for creating multi-active electrocatalysts that are stable, economical, and efficient.
A Unique Etching‐Doping Route to Fe/Mo Co‐Doped Ni Oxyhydroxide Catalyst for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:A unique plasma etching‐electrochemical doping route is developed to synthesize reinforced Fe/Mo‐doped Ni oxyhydroxide catalyst for OER in alkaline media. In situ Raman analysis reveals that the intercalation of MoO42− is able to prevent the over‐oxidation of NiOOH matrix, thus keeping the Fe‐doped NiOOH at the most active state. Fe‐doped Ni (oxy)hydroxide shows intriguing activity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, yet it remains challenging to further boost its performance. In this work, a ferric/molybdate (Fe3+/MoO42−) co‐doping strategy is reported to promote the OER activity of Ni oxyhydroxide. The reinforced Fe/Mo‐doped Ni oxyhydroxide catalyst supported by nickel foam (p‐NiFeMo/NF) is synthesized via a unique oxygen plasma etching‐electrochemical doping route, in which precursor Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are first etched by oxygen plasma to form defect‐rich amorphous nanosheets, followed by electrochemical cycling to trigger simultaneously Fe3+/MoO42− co‐doping and phase transition. This p‐NiFeMo/NF catalyst requires an overpotential of only 274 mV to reach 100 mA cm−2 in alkaline media, exhibiting significantly enhanced OER activity compared to NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst and other analogs. Its activity does not fade even after 72 h uninterrupted operation. In situ Raman analysis reveals that the intercalation of MoO42− is able to prevent the over‐oxidation of NiOOH matrix from β to γ phase, thus keeping the Fe‐doped NiOOH at the most active state.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts play a vital role to overcome the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we developed iron-doped (Fe-doped) NiCoO2 nanoplates with NaCl-type structure as an efficient electrocatalyst to speed up OER. NiCoO2 nanoplates doping with different concentration of Fe were optimized. Specifically, the catalytic properties of 10 mol% Fe-doped NiCoO2 (denoted as FNC0.1) showed outstanding OER catalytic activity, with an overpotential of 302 mV and a low Tafel slope of 42 mV dec(-1) at 10 mA cm(-2) in 0.1 M KOH. More importantly, the activity of FNC0.1 was only about 3% loss after 10 h of stability measurements at 1.53 V vs. RHE. The dramatically enhanced OER performance of the FNC0.1 might derive from the synergistic interplay of Co, Ni and Fe, a certain level of amorphization and easily hydroxylation after doping Fe. This work demonstrated that doping Fe would be beneficial to improve the OER activities and the stabilities of the catalysts. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fluorine (F) anion doping has recently emerged as a promising approach for boosting the activity of earth-abundant metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). But many key questions concerning this new approach remain unanswered, including the nature of F-doping, the mechanistic understanding of F-doping effects as well as the long-term stability of F-doped catalysts. Herein, we report a case study of F-NiOOH/Ni(OH)2/NF catalyst that was fabricated using a simple anodic electrooxidation method in a F-containing alkaline solution. A combination of experimental and computational studies revealed that F anions substitute for OH groups in the NiOOH surface layer and such a substitutional F-doping results in significant improvement of OER activity. In particular, the F-doped catalyst possesses outstanding stability when operated in a F-containing electrolyte. For instance, F-NiOOH/Ni(OH)2/NF showed an overpotential fluctuation of only ±4 mV in a 100-h constant current test at 100 mA cm−2 in a 0.01 M KF alkaline solution. Furthermore, our study found that this simple F-doping method is applicable to other transition metal oxide/hydroxide catalysts for boosting OER activity.

Abstract:Ni- and Co-based (oxy)hydroxides are promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but their limited specific surface area and poor intrinsic conductivity lead to unsatisfied OER activity. Herein, a unique and universal self-template strategy has been developed to fabricate Fe-incorporated CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (Fe-CoNi-OH) nanosheet-assembled nanorod arrays toward OER. The reorganized nanosheet-assembled nanorod hierarchical structure induced by Fe incorporation exposes more active sites and facilitates mass transfer. Furthermore, Fe incorporation modifies the electron structure of CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (CoNi-OH), and enhances its electronic conductivity for rapid electron transport, thus intrinsically enhancing the OER activity. Consequently, the Fe-CoNi-OH possesses excellent OER activity with low overpotentials of 210, 248, 304, and 349 mV to achieve current densities of 10, 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, along with a very small Tafel slope of 28.0 mV dec−1, which are superior to the CoNi-OH and benchmark RuO2. By paring the Fe-CoNi-OH anode with a CoP cathode, an outstanding alkaline electrolyzer has been constructed, which only requires cell voltages of 1.506 and 1.623 V to deliver current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and can stably work for 100 h. This work provides a universal strategy to synthesize Fe-containing hierarchical nanostructured catalysts for energy conversion application.

Abstract:Water splitting plays an important role in overcoming the intermittent problems for sustainable energy development, and an efficient non-noble catalyst is highly desired to catalyze the more sluggish half-reaction of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we demonstrated the Fe-doped CoF2 as a novel and efficient catalyst for OER via facile structural transformation derived from the CoFe layered double hydroxide. The crystal structure and surface chemical state analysis indicated the successful structural transformation from CoFe layered double hydroxide to the bulk crystal of CoF2 doped by Fe. The obtained Fe-CoF2 nanoflakes largely improved the utilization of active sites and effectively promoted mass transfer. The Fe-CoF2-300 showed a low overpotential of 230 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm−2 when loaded on an inert glass carbon electrode, which is about 60 mV less than that of the pristine CoFe layered double hydroxide catalyst. It also exhibited a small Tafel slope of 41.9 mV dec-1 and super catalytic stability. High valence state change from the M−F bond to the M−O bond driven by the OER process was indicated after the long-term stability test indicating the facile active phase formation. This works provides an effective doping strategy to design novel catalysts for decreasing the overpotential and accelerating the kinetics of OER.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the most important anodic reactions in electrochemical conversion devices. Although a lot of OER electrocatalysts have been developed, the actual active sites during OER have not been fully understood. Herein, we report that the distorted FeOOH/Ni hydroxide on Ni foam (NF) (d-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF) shows better electrochemical performance (1.50 V at 100 mA cm-2 and long-term stability for 32 hours at 425 mA cm-2) than crystalline FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF (c-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF), and outperforms most of the state-of-the-art electrocatalysts. By using in-situ and ex-situ techniques, we show that the interfaces in d-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF, which are the key active sites for OER, are well maintained during the reaction, leading to promoted catalytic performance and long-term stability at high current density. We demonstrate that the structure rearrangement in d-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF endows high flexibility of the lattice and tolerates the volume expansion during OER. Our study provides an insightful understanding on the catalytic performance of Fe-Ni based electrocatalysts and guidance for their design and synthesis for practical application.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to efficient water splitting to produce the H-2 fuel for sustainable energy production. Currently, the best non noble metal OER electrocatalyst in base conditions is the Fe-doped NiOOH (N1-xFexOOH), with an overpotential of eta = 0.4, but much lower values are desired. We use density functional theory to determine the overall mechanism for the OER of N1-xFexOOH, concluding that promoting radical character on the metal-oxo bond is critical to efficient OER Then we consider replacing Fe with 17 other transition metals of the Fe, Ru, and Os rows, where we find 3 new promising candidates: Co, Rh, and Ir, which we estimate to have eta = 0.27, 0.15, and 0.02, respectively, all very much improved performance compared to Fe, making all three systems excellent candidates for experimental testing.

Abstract:Nickel-iron bimetal compounds have shown to be efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline environment. Here, we report the outstanding OER performance of an iron doped nickel layered silicate (Ni 1- x Fe x ) 3 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4 ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4), which was synthesized via a combined co-precipitation and hydrothermal method. The doping Fe ions are found to have a stronger adsorption effect on the *O intermediate, thereby reducing the energy barrier for the potential determining step *OH → *O, and as a result greatly enhance the OER activity of nickel layered silicate. At Fe doping concentration of 30 mol%, a minimum OER overpotential of 286 mV is achieved at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 without IR correction, 86 mV lower than that of undoped catalyst. Moreover, the catalyst maintains favorable OER stability over a 24-hour chronopotentiometry test in 1 M KOH. This work provides insights into exploration and design of metal silicate-based OER catalysts.

Abstract:Nickel iron (oxy)hydroxide (NiFeOxHy) is among the most active electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the alkaline media. Development of new design strategy for NiFeOxHy electrode with respect to intrinsic activity and number of active species is highly attractive. Here we report a hierarchical fabrication for NiFeOxHy electrode towards efficient oxygen evolution. Three-dimensional mesoporous NiO was initially prepared and reduced to a polycrystalline Ni metal framework. Despite the poor OER activity for Ni-based catalyst, the incorporation of surface Fe species induced a notably high current density for the oxygen evolution. The results indicated that the Fe species, located at outer surface region, played a key role as the OER active sites. It is also found that the surface of metallic Ni was reconstructed to (oxy)hydroxide phase with ease compared to NiO. As a result, a heterostructure composed of an OER-active NiFe (oxy)hydroxide shell and an electron-conductive Ni core was formed. In this fabricated NiFeOxHy/Ni catalyst, the promoted intrinsic activity, number of active sites and charge-transfer ability all taken into account contribute to an efficient OER process.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of spinel oxide NiCo2O4 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated. It shows that NiCo2O4 synthesized via hydrothermal treatment at 90 ℃ followed by calcination at 350 ℃ exhibits excellent catalytic activity. Furthermore, Fe-doped MnO2 (marked as Fe-M) was introduced as a modifier to further improve the performance of NiCo2O4. As expected, the 20% Fe-M hybrid catalyst (NiCo2O4 modified with 20 wt% Fe-M) displays the best ORR and OER catalytic activity. This is evidenced by its high OER current density of 265 mA cm−2, high ORR current density of 220 mA cm−2, low OER Tafel slope of 119 mV dec−1, low ORR Tafel slope of 167 mV dec−1. These exceptional results can be attributed to the synergistic effect between NiCo2O4 and Fe-M.Graphical AbstractBased on synergistic effect, the 20% Fe-M hybrid catalyst exhibits the best catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract:NiFe-based oxyhydroxides are promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, but further enhancing their OER performance remains a significant challenge. Herein, we in situ incorporated polyoxometalates into NiFe oxyhydroxide to form a homogeneous/heterogeneous hybrid material, which induces the electronic interaction between Ni, Fe and Mo sites, as revealed by a variety of characterizations and theoretical calculations. The resulting hybrid electrocatalyst delivers a low overpotential of 203 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a TOF of 2.34 s-1 at 1.53 V in alkaline media. This work presents a critical step towards developing high-performance OER catalysts by constructing metal-POM hybrids.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is one of the potential approaches for making renewable energy production and storage viable. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as a sluggish four-electron electrochemical reaction, has to overcome high overpotential to accomplish overall water splitting. Therefore, developing low-cost and highly active OER catalysts is the key for achieving efficient and economical water electrolysis. In this work, Fe-doped NiMoO4 was synthesized and evaluated as the OER catalyst in alkaline medium. Fe3+ doping helps to regulate the electronic structure of Ni centers in NiMoO4, which consequently promotes the catalytic activity of NiMoO4. The overpotential to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) is 299 mV in 1 m KOH for the optimal Ni0.9Fe0.1MoO4, which is 65 mV lower than that for NiMoO4. Further, the catalyst also shows exceptional performance stability during a 2 h chronopotentiometry testing. Moreover, the real catalytically active center of Ni0.9Fe0.1MoO4 is also unraveled based on the ex situ characterizations. These results provide new alternatives for precious-metal-free catalysts for alkaline OER and also expand the Fe-doping-induced synergistic effect towards performance enhancement to new catalyst systems.
Large-current Polarization-Engineered FeOOH@NiOOH Electrocatalyst with Stable Fe Sites for Large-Current Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:NiFe-based (oxy)hydroxides are among the most efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, significant Fe leakage during the OER results in unsatisfactory stability. Herein, a large-current (1.5 A cm-2) - 2 ) galvanostatic reconstruction was used to fabricate FeOOH@NiOOH (eFNOL) e FNO L ) with both fixed Fe sites and exposed high-index crystal facets (HIFs). Compared to FeNiOOH with low-index crystal facets, the phase-separated FeOOH@NiOOH showed a higher binding energy towards Fe, and the HIFs significantly improved the catalytic activity of FeOOH. The optimized e FNO L catalyst exhibits ultralow overpotentials of 234 and 272 mV, yielding substantial current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm-2, - 2 , respectively, with a small Tafel slope of 35.2 mV dec-1. - 1 . Moreover, due to the stabilized Fe sites, its striking stability over 100 h at 500 mA cm-2 - 2 with 1.5% decay outperforms most NiFe-based OER catalysts reported recently. This study provides an effective strategy for developing highly active and stable catalysts via large-current electrochemical reconstruction. Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of Fe-Doped Lithium Nickel-Based Metal Oxide through Modification of Nickel Oxidation State

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves the four-electron transfer process of water oxidation to produce oxygen gas and protons. However, this reaction is kinetically sluggish and requires high overpotential compared to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we have fabricated Fe-doped LiNiO 2 using electrospray deposition (ESD) technique. With this technique, we can modify the electronic structure of LiNiO 2 by controlling amounts of Fe, and the morphology can be controlled with various parameters such as applied voltage, spray rate, and substrate temperature. The synergistic effect of iron doping can modify the electronic structure of the surface Ni ions and increase oxidation state of Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ . Through this oxidation state change, Ni becomes more electrophilic and then adsorbed oxygen in the M – O step, which is considered as rate-determining step in OER, easily reacts with OH ions. In electrochemical analysis, the optimized Fe-doped LiNiO 2 showed improved OER performance compared to LiNiO 2 . The surface chemical compositions of the Fe-doped LiNiO 2 electrode were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). From our result, we can improve OER performance and stability with simple control of ESD technique parameters and electronic structure modification by Fe doping.
Insight into Fe Activating One-Dimensional Α-Ni(oh)2 Nanobelts for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Development of high-efficiency and inexpensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is highly desirable for water electrolysis devices and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, we report novel one-dimensional (1D) Fe-doped alpha-Ni(OH)(2) nanobelts as OER-active electrocatalysts. In-depth characterizations revealed that Fe atoms are incorporated into the lattice of Ni(OH)(2), resulting in the strong electron interaction with active Ni sites. Moreover, a contraction of Ni-O bond distance induced by Fe is revealed by operando X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy under OER working condition, which leads to a near-optimized adsorption of oxygen intermediates. Consequently, the Fe-doped alpha-Ni(OH)(2) nanobelts deliver significantly promoted OER activity in alkaline solutions with a low OER overpotential of 236 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) along with good stability. This work provides a strategy for developing efficiently non-noble metal catalysts, gives insights to the Fe doping effect and the dynamic evolution of disturbed atomic and electronic structure of Ni active sites.
