Abstract:Electrocoagulation (EC) using electrodes made from iron scrap is a novel and promising strategy for arsenic (As) contaminated ground water remediation. In synthetic groundwater, amorphous hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) precipitates formed by the rapid dissolution of a sacrificial iron scrap anode adsorbed As very effectively. A competitive adsorption model developed in this study with parameters fitted for As and other coexisting anions (phosphate and silicate) was in good agreement with the observed results. It is indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of HFO generated in the EC system was ∼0.70mol/mol. Reducing the As concentration in water from 500μg/L As(V) and As(III) to below 50μg/L (local drinking water standard in Bangladesh) required ∼8mg/L and ∼32mg/L iron respectively (pH=7.1±0.1, charge dosage rate=3 coulomb/L/min). It was found that coexisting cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) neutralized the HFO surface charge, promoted aggregation and resulted in greater As removal. The presence of humic acid exhibited a negligible effect on As removal and HFO precipitate settling. Jar tests showed that the turbidity of the solution could be reduced to <1 NTU with the addition of 2mg/L Al3+.

Abstract:The remediation of geogenic high arsenic groundwater is of great significance for environmental protection. In this study, a feasible strategy for in-situ growth of MnO 2 and FeOOH on a three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon foam skeleton was developed by simple calcination carbonization and activation treatment of modified carbon foams. This work demonstrates that arsenic in aqueous solution can be efficiently removed by the dual function of "oxidation and adsorption" from the composite of MnO 2 -FeOOH co-loaded carbon foam (CF). The prepared 3D monolithic has the advantages of low cost, easy preparation, and independent integrity. It can be innovatively used for arsenic remediation of groundwater systems. The MnO 2 serves as the oxidizer to convert highly toxic As(III) into less toxic As(V), the FeOOH acts as the adsorbent for the capture of As(V), and CF offers an interconnected porous network for efficient mass transfer as well as a robust skeleton for facile recycling. The maximum adsorption capacity of As(III) and As(V) for MnO 2 -FeOOH@CF can reach 63 and 78 mg g −1 , respectively. After repeatedly utilizing the free-standing adsorbent three times, its adsorption capacity for As(III) and As(V) can still reach 84 % and 85 % of the initial adsorption capacity, respectively. The low cost, high efficiency of arsenic removal, and easy preparation and recycling endow the MnO 2 -FeOOH@CF to be a promising adsorbent in practical application.

Abstract:In this work, graphene oxide (GO) and copper ferrite composite was synthesized on Fe-Ni foam via a one-step hydrothermal method. The foam substrate not only acts as holding material for GO and copper ferrite, but also makes this adsorbent convenient to recycle. The morphology and surface composition of the graphene oxide/copper ferrite foam (GCFF) were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectra. The adsorption behavior of As(III) and As(V) onto the GCFF was studied as a function of solution pH, temperature, contact time, initial concentrations, and competing ions. Results show this GCFF is an efficient adsorbent for arsenic with high adsorption capacities for both As(III) and As(V) owing to the synergistic effect of CuFe2O4 and GO. The maximum adsorption capacities for As(III) and As(V) are 51.64 and 124.69 mg g(-1), respectively. Adsorption isotherms study indicates a Langmuir model of adsorption. In addition, the GCFF also reveals good recyclability due to the unique foam structure and the adsorption capacity is almost not deteriorated after eight recycles. Column experiment suggests that 96% As(V) can be removed from water solution after 100 bed volume test.
Iron-lanthanum supported on graphite sheets for As(III) removal from aqueous solution: kinetics, thermodynamic and ecotoxicity assessment

Abstract:Graphene-based material is widely used to remove arsenic from water due to its layered structure with high surface area. Here, we have successfully synthesized Fe-La bimetallic modified graphite sheet materials to more efficiently remove As(III) from aqueous solution. The results showed that Fe-La-graphite sheets (FL-graphite sheets) have a larger specific surface area (194.28 m 2 ·g −1 ) than graphite sheets (2.80 m 2 ·g −1 ). The adsorption capacity of FL-graphite sheets for As(III) was 51.69 mg·g −1 , which was higher than that of graphite sheets (21.91 mg·g −1 ), La-graphite sheets (26.06 mg·g −1 ), and Fe-graphite sheets (40.26 mg·g −1 ). The FL-graphite sheets conformed to the Freundlich and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 53.62 mg·g −1 . The removal process obeys intra-particle diffusion and pore diffusion for As(III). The results of batch adsorption experiments and characterization analyses demonstrated that oxidation, ligand exchange, and inner sphere complexation mechanisms involved in the adsorption of FL-graphite sheets to As(III) in comparison with graphite sheets. In addition, electrostatic attraction mechanism was found vital in the adsorption. Ecotoxicity assessment revealed that FL-graphite sheets have little influence on rice germination and growth, but reduced the toxicity of As(III) to rice. Therefore, the FL-graphite sheets have good practical application value in purifying As(III) polluted water with litter ecotoxicity.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous Fe3O4 particles with tunable grain size were synthesized based on a facile poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA)-modulated solvothermal method. The products were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption technique, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results show that increasing the PDDA dosage decrease the grain size and particle size, which increased the particle porosity and enhanced the surface area from 7.05 to 32.75 m(2) g(-1). Possible mechanism can be ascribed to the PDDA function on capping the crystal surface and promoting the viscosity of reaction medium to mediate the growth and assembly of grain. Furthermore, the arsenic adsorption application of the as-obtained Fe3O4 samples was investigated and the adsorption mechanism was proposed. High magnetic Fe3O4 particles with increased surface area display improved arsenic adsorption performance, superior efficiency in low-level arsenic removal, high desorption efficiency, and satisfactory magnetic recyclability, which are very promising compared with commercial Fe3O4 particles.
Electrospinning Chitosan/Fe-Mn Nanofibrous Composite for Efficient and Rapid Removal of Arsenite from Water

Abstract:Efficient removal of extremely mobile and toxic As(III) from water is a challenging but critical task. Herein, we developed a functionalized sorbent of chitosan nanofiber with iron–manganese (Fe-Mn@CS NF) using a one-step hybrid electrospinning approach to remove trace As(III) from water. Batch adsorption studies were performed to determine the adsorption efficiency under a variety of conditions, including contact time, starting concentration of As(III), ionic strength, and the presence of competing anions. The experimental results demonstrated that the concentration of As(III) dropped from 550 to less than 1.2 μg/L when using 0.5 g/L Fe-Mn@CS NF. This demonstrates the exceptional adsorption efficiency (99.8%) of Fe-Mn@CS NF for removing As(III) at pH 6.5. The kinetic tests revealed that the adsorption equilibrium was reached in 2.6 h, indicating a quick uptake of As(III). The ionic strength effect analysis showed that the adsorbed As(III) formed inner-sphere surface complexes with Fe-Mn@CS NF. The presence of SO42− or F− had a negligible impact on As(III) uptake, while the presence of PO43− impeded As(III) absorption by competing for adsorption sites. The exhausted sorbent could be effectively regenerated with a dilute NaOH solution. Even after 10 cycles of regenerating Fe-Mn@CS NF, the adsorption efficiency of As(III) in natural groundwater was maintained over 65%. XPS and FTIR analyses show that the presence of M–OH and C–O groups on the sorbent surface is essential for removing As(III) from water. Overall, our study highlights the significant potential of Fe-Mn@CS NF for the efficient and quick elimination of As(III) from water.

Abstract:Arsenic pollution in natural water is a worldwide problem. In this work, a resin-based hydrated iron oxide (D303-HFO) adsorbent was designed to remove arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)) in the groundwa-ter. The structure and morphology of the D303-HFO adsorbent were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM tests. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore size increased with the incorporation of HFO nanoparticles in the resin. In addition, the effects of pH and coexisting ions on the arsenic removal efficiency were investigated. Results indicated that the D303-HFO had efficient removal performance for arsenic in the pH range of 3-9 and showed high selectivity for As(V) and As(III) under the influence of competitive ions. The adsorption kinetics study confirmed that the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption, and the adsorption isotherms of As(V) and As(III) by D303-HFO fitted the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and exother-mic. Moreover, the regeneration and stability experiment indicated that the D303-HFO adsorbent was super reusable after five consecutive cycles and could be put into service stably and permanently. The fixed-bed column test showed that the water sample containing As(V) and As(III) was treated with a volume of 900BV and 1100BV, respectively. Preparation of ferric nitrate–graphene nanocomposite and its adsorption of arsenic(V) from simulated arsenic‐containing wastewater

Abstract:Ferric nitrate–graphene (FG) nanocomposites synthesized via the equivalent‐volume impregnation method were used for the removal of As(V) species from simulated arsenic‐containing wastewater. Effects of various factors were assessed, such as the reaction temperature, solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and reaction time. The results indicated that the As(V) removal efficiency was as high as 99%, and the concentration of arsenic‐containing wastewater after FG treatment was as low as 9.4 μg L–1 as a result of the optimal absorption capacity and maximum specific surface area (171.766 m2/g) of this material. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of FG for As(V) was achieved in approximately 20 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated to be 112.4 mg g–1 by Langmuir adsorption isotherm, which was higher than that of other adsorbents such as manganese‐incorporated iron(III) oxide–graphene (14.42 mg g–1). Moreover, the removal efficiency of As(V) can be maintained above 95% under acidic and alkaline conditions. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis showed that the modified FG pore structure was regular. Based on the characterizations by X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared, the products on the surface of the used FG were Fe(OH)3, FeAsO4, and other compounds, and As(V) was mainly removed by the formation of insoluble compounds and coprecipitation.

Abstract:This work aims at exploring a novel environment-friendly nanomaterial based on natural clay minerals for arsenic removal in aqueous samples. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were selected as the substrate with Mn oxides loaded on the surface to enhance its arsenic adsorption ability and then grafted onto the SiO 2 -coated Fe 3 O 4 microsphere to get a just enough magnetic performance facilitating the material's post-treatment. The prepared composite (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs) was extensively characterized by various instruments including Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Batch experiments were carried out to get the optimum test conditions for arsenic adsorption by the composite, including pH, loading amount of Mn oxides, adsorbent dosage, and the co-existing ions. The adsorption of As III and As V on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs were both well fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model revealing the chemisorption between arsenic and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs. The adsorption process of As III and As V were both endothermic and spontaneous displayed by the thermodynamic study. The capacities of the prepared composite are 3.28 mg g −1 for As III and 3.52 mg g −1 for As V , respectively, which are comparable or better than those of many reported materials in the references. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) tests were carried out to access the secondary environmental risk of the composite and showed that it was quite environmentally stable and can be safely disposed. The composite was successfully applied in environmental water samples indicating its great potential applicability in future.

Abstract:Ternary zero-valent iron/phos photungstic acid/g-C3N4 composite (Fe-0@PTA/g-C3N4) was synthesized via photoreduction of iron (II) ions assisted by phosphotungstic acid (PTA) over g-C3N4 flakes. The as-prepared Fe-0@PTA/g-C3N4 was investigated for removal of As(III) and As(V) species from water. The result showed that Fe-0@PTA/g-C3N4 exhibited a better performance for As(V) removal than As(III) species from water, and the maximum adsorption capacity for As(V) was 70.3 mg/g, much higher than most of the reported adsorbents. As(V) removal by the Fe-0@PTA/g-C3N4 adsorbent is mainly via a chemical process, synergistically occurring of reduction of As(V) and oxidation of Fe-0. Moreover, the Fe-0@PTA/g-C3N4 adsorbent showed effective As(V) removal from the simulated industrial wastewater and underground water. This study demonstrates that Fe-0@PTA/g-C3N4 can be a potential adsorbent for As(V) removal due to its high performance, and simple one-pot synthesis process. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The removal of arsenic from aqueous solution is crucial to human health and environmental pollution. Herein, flower-like α-Fe2O3 nanostructures were synthesized via a template-free microwave-assisted solvothermal technique, and were applied as adsorbents for the removal of arsenic (As(V)) from aqueous solutions. The results indicated that the synthesized flower-like α-Fe2O3 showed excellent sorption properties and had a maximum sorption capacity of 47.64 mg/g for As(V). Meanwhile, the experimental results of photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) indicated that the as-synthesized flower-like α-Fe2O3 exhibited very high photocatalytic performance for the photodegradation of MB and that the as-obtained flower-like α-Fe2O3 nanostructures were suitable materials in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Contaminated groundwater with a high concentration of arsenic continues to pose health threats to millions of people worldwide, especially in Asia. As(III) is the dominant arsenic species in groundwater, and is more toxic, soluble, and mobile than As(V). Affected communities need accessible technologies to remove As(III) from drinking water, especially in rural areas. In this study, a strategy is adopted to assemble small-sized magnetic MnFe2O4 nanocrystal building blocks to form mesoporous clusters (NCs) with the advantage of increasing the magnetization while retaining superparamagnetic characteristics by using a solvothermal method, which is beneficial for efficient separation from treated water by a moderate magnetic field. The MnFe2O4 NCs combined with uniform mesoporous structure and small constituent nanocrystals (about 8-12 nm in size) provides a synergistic effect for enhanced adsorption performance toward As(III) with an adsorption capacity (>27.27 mg g(-1)) under neutral conditions. The analysis of Fourier transformed infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates that the adsorption of As(III) on MnFe2O4 NCs is through the formation of a surface complex.
Design and synthesis of biopolymer-derived porous graphitic carbon covered iron-organic frameworks for depollution of arsenic from waters

Abstract:A series of alginate-derived porous graphitic carbon (PGC) wrapped iron-based organic frameworks (Fe-MIL-88B) composites were synthesized and checked their ability for the removal of arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) from water. Various amounts of PGC (5, 10, 20, and 50 wt/wt %) were utilized as a wrapping material for the development of composites with Fe-MIL-88B@PGCx% and optimized for As(III)/As(V) adsorption. The chemical functionalities, structure, morphology, porous properties and bonding nature of the adsorbents were analyzed using FTIR, PXRD, SEM, BET, and XPS, respectively. Fe-MIL-88B@PGC20% composite was explored to have maximum removal efficiency and fastest adsorption kinetics for As(III)/As(V), of all Fe-MIL-88B@PGCx% composites and pristine Fe-MIL-88B studied here. The developed adsorbents are highly pH dependent and selective in common co-existing anions except for F-, PO43- and humic acid. The Langmuir isotherm studies of As(III) and As(V) adsorption suggest maximum adsorption capacities of 1.6853 and 2.2636 mmol/g, at pH of 3.0 and 9.2, respectively. The XPS analysis of As(III)-sorbed Fe-MIL-88B@PGC20% composite reveals that a portion of As(III) has been oxidized into As(V) during the adsorption process. The continuous flow-bed column study indicates that bed volumes of 249.6 and 452.8 mL of As(III) and As(V) contaminated water was treated, respectively, also reduced the concentration of As(III)/As(V) to less than WHO standards (<10 μg/L).

Abstract:Arsenic, cadmium, chromium and nickel are categorized as carcinogen 1. Among these, arsenic is most toxic, which accumulates in the body cells and cause serious diseases like cancer, kidney failure, lungs and chest problems. In this project, In-Situ Graphene oxide/Zinc Ferrite (GO/ZnFe 2 O 4 ) nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized using modified Hummer's assisted with precipitation method. The NCs were characterized by UV/Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. XRD confirms the formation of NCs with average crystallite size 47 nm, 34 nm and 28 nm for GO/ZnFO (10:5) , GO/ZnFO (5:2.5) and GO/ZnFO (1:0.5) respectively. The GO/ZnFe 2 O 4 NCs were used for adsorption of As(III) from aqueous solution under the influence of time, concentration and temperature. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the adsorption capacity which was found in the range 80 to 98% at lower concentrations. The kinetic data followed pseudo second order. The As(III) removal data was tested for Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. However, Langmuir model was found better fitted. The results obtained show that GO/ZnFe 2 O 4 NCs are effective and economically valuable adsorbents for removing As(III) ions.

Abstract:Hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) has high adsorption efficiency for As(III). However, its high self-aggregation usually reduces the efficiency and limits the scaled-up application. Herein, biochar (BC), with large surface area and amounts of surface functional groups was used to tune the loading and distribution of HFO to prepare an efficient adsorbent (HFO/BC) via in-situ synthesis method. The influence of the mass ratio of iron salt to BC on HFO/BC morphology was investigated, and the mechanism was discussed. The results showed that novel HFO was formed and distributed uniformly on the surface of BC when the mass ratio of iron salt to BC was 5:1. Abstract:Attributing to its ubiquitous nature, arsenic (As) is frequently detected in various waterbodies across the globe, at concentrations often exceeding the permissible limits. In view of the acute and chronic toxicity of the arsenite species (As(III)), it is highly recommended to remove As(III) from aqueous matrices. Herein, we propose a agarose-based La-doped Al2O3/g-C3N4 (LAC) aerogel as a novel adsorptive photocatalyst for removal of As(III) via the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis. While g-C3N4 could transform As(III) to As(V) through photocatalytic oxidation, La-doped Al2O3 provided strong adsorption sites for the resulting As(V). Accordingly, the combination of adsorption and photocatalytic transformation of highly toxic As(III) into less toxic As(V), followed by subsequent adsorption of the latter can be considered as a promising technique to treat arsenic-contaminated water. The as-prepared aerogel was successfully characterized via a range of state-of-the-art microscopy, spectroscopy, and surface-specific analytical techniques. The optimized aerogel demonstrated a removal efficiency of 66.5% after 300 min of UV light irradiation. Furthermore, evaluating the effects of various reactive oxygen species via free-radical quenching experiments revealed that superoxide radicles (•O2 −), singlet oxygen (1O2), and holes (h+) played a role key in the photocatalytic oxidation of As(III). More importantly, the LAC aerogel was structurally resilient and can be reused over multiple cycles, without any significant loss of the desired functionalities. Based on these deliberations, the integration of g-C3N4 with La-Al2O3 in the form of aerogel can be considered as a prospective strategy for the removal of arsenic from aqueous phase.

Abstract:In this report, a new nanocomposite, magnetic graphene oxide on activated carbon (MGO/AC) material was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. This synthesized nanocomposite was employed for the removal of As(V) from an aqueous solution. The MGO/AC adsorbent was subjected to characterization using FE-SEM, XRD, EDX, BET, FTIR, and Raman spectra. These techniques determined the morphological structure and properties of nanocomposite materials. The adsorption process of MGO/AC is described by a pseudo-second-order model. At the equilibrium state, near room temperature, the MGO/AC material adsorbs As(V) with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 14.25 mg/g. The maximum adsorption efficiency of As(V) was about 98% after 60 min with a specific surface area of 708.25 m 2 /g. Results also show the adsorption capacity of As(V) by the composite was higher than that of activated carbon and magnetic graphene oxide material. Therefore, the use of the MGO/AC adsorbent has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in removing heavy metal ions and can be considered a promising and innovative material for water treatment.

Abstract:Developing highly effective and low-cost adsorbent is crucial for removing the more toxic arsenic wastewater. However, most of the adsorbents cannot meet the requirements for adsorbing high concentrations As(III) sewage. Here, we report the as-synthesized Fe-Mn-Ca composites with excellent adsorption performance for the treatment of high concentrations As(III)-contaminated water. It is found Fe-Mn-Ca composite with higher ratio of Ca component exhibits larger specific surface area and zeta potential, which receives a better removal efficiency. Consecutive adsorption recycling experiments demonstrate that Fe-Mn-Ca composites have remarkable reusability performance. FTIR and XPS results reveal that As(III) removal by Fe-Mn-Ca composites was attributed to the synergistic effect of oxidation and adsorption process. The calcium component on the adsorbent particles may promote the derivatization of hydrogen peroxide, resulting in more arsenite being converted to arsenate ions and thus achieving an excellent adsorption capacity. This work provides a promising adsorbent with outstanding adsorption properties toward the treatment of high-concentration arsenic wastewater in the practical industrial application.

Abstract:Arsenic is a hazardous element found in water sources, and removing it is crucial for ensuring a safe environment and water quality. Iron-based metal oxides efficiently remove arsenic; however, their small particle sizes make separation from water difficult after arsenic removal. Furthermore, the growing global issue of polymer waste further complicates environmental concerns. Combining three-dimensional (3D) printing and adsorption technology by incorporating nanosized functional materials into supporting polymers offers a potential solution to address both challenges. In this study, we developed a 3D-printed adsorption material through the incorporation of synthesized Fe-Ni bimetallic particles into a supporting polymer using selective laser sintering (SLS) technology. This adsorbent's properties were examined through scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and zeta potential. Furthermore, its performance in removing As(III) and As(V), even at trace levels, was assessed under varied conditions. The 3D-printed adsorbent demonstrated excellent removal of As(III) at pH 6, and As(V) at pH 4, lowering their concentration below 10 μg/L, thereby adhering to the limit established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Both As(III) and As(V) fitted the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, suggesting potential heterogeneous and chemisorption processes. FT-IR indicated that the exchange of the -OH group of Fe-OH with oxyanions of As(III) and As(V) could be the adsorption mechanism. Additionally, thermodynamic evaluation unveiled an endothermic and non-spontaneous adsorption reaction. The 3D-printed adsorbent exhibited excellent reusability across recurring adsorption cycles. The combination of SLS 3D printing with Fe-Ni bimetallic particles produces structures that retain their functionality in removing both arsenic species present in water. This indicates the potential of the 3D-printed adsorbent for effective treatment of arsenic-contaminated water, offering remedies to challenges like handling small particle sizes, mitigating polymer waste, and addressing environmental concerns.

Abstract:A simple one-step method for fabricating graphene-based hydrogels (GHs) with interconnected 3D networks using Cu nanoparticles was developed. During this process, graphene oxide (GO) was reduced by Cu nanoparticles to form reduced GO (rGO) which then self-assembled to form GHs. Meanwhile, the Cu nanoparticles were oxidized to form copper(I) oxide which deposited onto the rGO sheets and became imbedded in the GHs. The GHs were transformed to graphene-based aerogels (GAs) by a green freeze-drying method. The composition of the GAs can be easily adjusted by simply changing the initial amount of Cu nanoparticles or the concentration of the GO suspension. The GAs not only possess good catalytic performance for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange but also have excellent capacities for removing various oils and dyes from water.
