Abstract:The full constellation of Chinese Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) BeiDou-3 has been deployed completely and started fully operational service. In addition to providing global Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services, the BeiDou-3 satellites transmissions can also be used as the sources of illumination for Earth Observation (EO) with a bistatic radar configuration. This innovative EO concept, known as GNSS reflectometry (GNSS-R), allows to measure the Earth surface characteristics at high resolution via the reflected L-band radar signals collected by a constellation of small, low cost and low Earth orbiting satellites. For the first time in orbit, earth reflected BeiDou-3 signal has been detected from the limited sets of raw data collected by the NASA's Cyclone GNSS (CYGNSS) constellation. The feasibility of spaceborne BeiDou-3 reflections on two typical applications, including sea surface wind and flooding inundation detection, has been demonstrated. The methodology and results give new strength to the prospect of new spaceborne GNSS-R instruments and missions, which can make multi-GNSS reflectometry observations available to better capture rapidly changing weather systems at better spatio-temporal scales.

Abstract:The feasibility of using China's Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data for estimating soil moisture is demonstrated in this letter. Previous studies for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) multipath for estimating soil moisture have concentrated on the Global Positioning System (GPS) SNR data. The SNR data recorded by BDS receivers can also be strongly impacted by the relative permittivity, which however, has not been comprehensively investigated. This letter used a commercially available geodetic-quality BDS/GPS receiver to collect BDS SNR data on both B1 and B2 frequencies. Two methods were investigated to demonstrate the relationship between BDS SNR metrics and soil moisture. One was the phase method proposed by Larson et al., and the other was an interference model proposed by Peng et al. The results show that both B1 and B2 frequencies perform well to reflect the moisture fluctuations, particularly for reflecting big precipitation events. Comparisons between BDS B1 and B2 with GPS L2C and L5 demonstrate the results from these two constellations are comparable. BDS could be a new data source for producing global high-temporal soil moisture products using GNSS-based approaches.

Abstract:Global navigation satellite system multipath reflectometry (GNSS-MR) has been validated for the estimation of water level. More satellites and signals would aid the accuracy and sampling rate of GNSS-MR. GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou Navigation Satellite System-2 (BDS-2) have been studied for their GNSS-MR water-level retrieval performance. This study focuses on evaluating the retrieval performance of new BDS-3 signals. In addition, the BDS has a unique orbit design, including the geostationary orbit (GEO), inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO), and medium earth orbit (MEO). This study also examined the retrieval performance of signals from different orbits. The results showed that the signals from IGSO and MEO of BDS can be used to retrieve water level, whereas those from GEO cannot. The water-level retrievals of BDS-3 signals have similar root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) to the signals of the other three constellations, and lower RMSEs are related to lower BDS signal frequencies. The accuracy of GNSS-MR combined retrievals with the participation of BDS improved by 22.04% compared with that without BDS.

Abstract:The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) of China started to provide global services in 2020, which provides a new data source for snow depth sensing through the Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR) technique. This study, taking advantage of two stations in the snow season of 2020, first evaluates the performance of the five state-of-the-art snow depth models on BDS data and provides a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of BDS data toward snow depth estimations. The results show that the snow depth estimations using the SNR, triple-frequency SNR combination (SNR_COM), and triple-frequency phase combination (F3) models are comparable, with high correlation coefficient R 2 (root-mean-square error, RMSE) values of 0.93 (3.17 cm), 0.93 (3.12 cm), and 0.93 (3.27 cm), respectively. The models of geometry-free linear combinations of the phase measurements (L4) and combination of pseudorange and carrier phase of dual-frequency signals (F2C) are slightly poorer, with mean R 2 (RMSE) values of 0.69 (7.18 cm) and 0.82 (4.68 cm), respectively. The snow depth retrieval results show similar accuracy using data from the BDS-3 and BDS-2 (RMSE = 3.63 cm vs. 3.72 cm). The results from the IGSO satellites are more reliable than those from the MEO satellites. The effects of satellite elevation angles and sampling rates are also analyzed to determine the optimal parameter selections (i.e., 5°–25° or 5°–30° and sampling rates < 120 s). The findings of this study can provide supporting information to determine the strategy for using BDS signals to retrieve snow depth.

Abstract:Since the launch of the last GEO satellite on December 27, 2012, BeiDou regional navigation satellite system (BDS) has been announced to provide positioning, navigation, timing (PNT) and short message communication services in the whole Asia-Pacific region, which suggests a new GNSS system could be applied for deformation monitoring in the future. In order to investigate the performance of BDS in high-precision deformation monitoring, an experiment platform was designed where the actual displacements could be defined accurately as the reference and a corresponding BDS data processing software was developed. With the platform, data over 15 days were obtained and were processed every 4 h for evaluating the precision and reliability of deformation monitoring using BDS only. The results show that, for short baselines the repeatability of the horizontal and vertical directions are better than 1 and 2 mm, respectively. In addition, the comparison of deformations calculated from the BDS data and the reference displacements derived by the experiment platform confirms a good agreement, which indicates the potential of BDS for deformation monitoring applications.

Abstract:China has recently established the primary constellation of BeiDou-3 global navigation satellite system (BDS-3). It is necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment about its performance. The signal quality, ambiguity resolution efficiency and real-time kinematic (RTK) performance are assessed based on the datasets collected with two Trimble Alloy receivers that can track all open signals of BDS-3. Then, the precise point positioning (PPP) using combined BDS-2 and BDS-3 measurements is compared with the PPP using BDS-2 only, where the precise satellite orbits and clocks are determined using 116 globally distributed monitor stations. The results show that the signal quality of BDS-3 is generally better than that of BDS-2. Also, the ambiguity resolution efficiency of RTK is improved by incorporating the BDS-3 measurements with success rate improving from 88.5 to 91.4%. Regarding PPP, the convergence time is shortened from about an hour to less than half an hour, while the positioning accuracy is also improved significantly.

Abstract:The Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), including the US's GPS, China's BDS, the European Union's Galileo, and Russia's GLONASS, offer real-time, all-weather, any-time, anywhere and high precision observations by transmitting L band signals continuously, which have been widely used for positioning, navigation and timing. With the development of GNSS technology, it has been found that GNSS-reflected signals can be used to detect Earth's surface characteristics together with other signals of opportunity. In this paper, the current status and latest advances are presented on Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) in theory, methods, techniques and observations. New developments and progresses in GNSS-R instruments, theoretical modeling, and signal processing, ground and space-/air-borne experiments, parameters retrieval (e.g. wind speed, sea surface height, soil moisture, ice thickness), sea surface altimetry and applications in the atmosphere, oceans, land, vegetation, and cryosphere are given and reviewed in details. Meanwhile, the challenges in the GNSS-R development of each field are also given. Finally, the future applications and prospects of GNSS-R are discussed, including multi-GNSS reflectometry, new GNSS-R receivers, GNSS-R missions, and emerging applications, such as mesoscale ocean eddies, ocean phytoplankton blooms, microplastics detection, target recognition, river flow, desert studies, natural hazards and landslides monitoring.

The Suitability Analysis of Soil Moisture Retrieval Using GNSS-R Technology

Abstract:Soil moisture measurements are important to hydrology,climatology,and agriculture.Global Navigation Satellite System refiectometry (GNSS-R) is a new and powerful tool for sensing soil moisture.Different methods have been proposed for the reception and processing of reflected signals,such as multiantenna and single-antenna patterns.Considerable efforts have been made on ground-based and airborne observations.Meanwhile,a number of space-borne missions have also been implemented.During the suitability analysis of soil moisture remote sensing via GNSS-R technique,three key factors have to be determined-the specular reflection point,spatial pixel size,and sensing depth in the soil-regardless of the extraction methods of the reflected signals or the types of the observation platform.However,no relatively comprehensive explanations are available in the current literature.Theoretical analysis and formula derivation are conducted to systematically and quantitatively determine the extent of soil detection in three dimensions from the abovementioned aspects.First,the geographical position of the specular reflection point on the WGS84 ellipsoid surface is determined with an iterative algorithm.The effect of elevation between the real ground surface and the ellipsoid is discussed.Second,the first Fresnel zone is defined as the spatial pixel of the GNSS-R technique.The size of the pixel is regarded as the spatial resolution based on the concept of the equi-delay ellipse.Thirdly,the penetration distance of GNSS signals in soil is expressed.The concept of sensing depth is proposed on penetration distance and is based on the theory of microwave remote sensing.This concept makes soil moisture detection more describable and comparable.To further analyze the feasibility of soil moisture remote sensing with GNSS-R,the results of two application scenarios are shown:(1) A ground-based GPS measurement was performed in Marshall,Colorado,US,from the Plate Boundary Observatory.This measurement corresponds to the single-antenna pattern.The relative location of the specular reflection points,average area of the first Fresnel ellipse clusters,and sensing depth of the time-series soil moisture are analyzed.(2)An airborne GNSS-R experiment was conducted in Zhengzhou to obtain soil moisture content.This measurement corresponds to the multiantenna pattern.The spatial distribution of estimated soil moisture with a certain resolution based on flight tracks and relevant sensing depth are manifested.The results of the ground-based GPS measurement and airborne GNSS-R experiment are reasonable and convincing.Given that this study determined the extent of detected soil in three dimensions,this work provides theoretical basis for the precision evaluation of retrieved soil moisture.BeiDou mainly differs from GPS in the carrier frequency for remote sensing using GNSS reflected signals.Therefore,the results of this study provide references for future development of the BeiDou-R technique in China.
Near real-time detecting of atmospheric water vapor content based on BeiDou Navigation Satellite System

Abstract:Abstract With the improvement of Beidou navigation satellite system (BDS), real-time monitoring of atmospheric water vapor content based on BDS has become a research hotspot. BDS and GPS observation data of seven MGEX CORS stations were processed using GAMIT10.71 software and the atmospheric precipitable water vapor (PWV) was estimated. The PWV/BDS using Beidou final precise ephemeris and ultra-rapid precise ephemeris was respectively compared with PWV/GPS using IGS final precise ephemeris. The experiment results showed that the PWV/BDS is in good agreement with the PWV/GPS. The standard deviation (Std) of the PWV/BDS based on Beidou final precise ephemeris and ultra-rapid precise ephemeris are respectively 2.91mm and 3.97mm. And the RMSE of the PWV/BDS based on Beidou final precise ephemeris and ultra-rapid precise ephemeris are respectively 3.97mm and 3.85mm with the PWV/GPS as the reference value.

Abstract:With the modernization of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), especially the rapid development of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), more observations of satellites and signals have become available. Using data of the globally distributed MGEX stations, a systematic and comprehensive evaluation of signal characteristics for BDS−3, BDS−2, GPS, and Galileo is conducted in terms of carrier−to−noise ratio (C/N0), code noise, and multipath in the contribution. First, a comprehensive signal quality assessment method for BDS/Galileo/GPS satellites and signals is proposed, including C/N0 modeling and MP modeling. For BDS, the BDS−3 satellites apparently have higher signal power than the BDS−2 satellites at the same frequency such as B1I and B3I, and the signal B2a of BDS−3 is superior to other signals in regard to signal power, which is comparable with the superior Galileo E5 signals and GPS L5. Among all the signals, the observation accuracy of E5 is the highest regardless of receiver types,, and next highest are BDS−3 B2a and GPS L5. Due to not being affected by the systematic code errors of BDS−2, the observations of BDS−3 satellites contain smaller multipath errors than that of BDS−2 satellites. As for the multipath suppression performance, the BDS−3 signal B2a, GPS L5, and Galileo E5 and E5b perform better than the other signals, which may be related to their wide signal bandwidths.

Abstract:The versatile refracted,reflected and scattered signals of Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS) have been successfully demonstrated to sound the atmosphere,ionosphere,ocean,land surfaces and the cryosphere as a new remote sensing tool.The technique of GNSS Reflectometry(GNSS-R) involves making measurements the reflections of GNSS signal from the Earth.This paper presents an overview of the theories of GNSS Reflectometry and its empirical applications in ocean(ocean altimetry,wind field,roughness,significant wave height,salinity,sea ice thickness,etc.) and land surface(soil moisture,forest biomass,snow status,etc.).Furthermore,the key technologies of GNSS-R are reviewed including the design of special GNSS-R receivers and the construction of monitoring models.Finally,the existing problems and prospects for the near future in terms of experiment and application are analyzed.
Initial Results of China’s GNSS-R Airborne Campaign: Soil Moisture Retrievals

Abstract:The global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique has been proven to be a powerful tool for retrieving geophysical parameters of ocean and land/hydrology processes. The ultimate goal for such GNSS-R applications is to achieve large-scale, all-weather, and full-time mapping using spaceborne platforms. In order to ensure both GNSS-R receiver and algorithm meet the requirements of spaceborne observations, airborne experimental campaigns need to be first carried out for early testing and validation purposes. This paper presents a first comprehensive overview of China’s airborne GNSS-R campaign conducted on May 30, 2014. There were two objectives for this campaign: (1) to examine the capability of the GNSS-R receiver developed by the National Space Science Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences, for airborne observations and (2) to study algorithms for soil moisture and altimetry retrievals. In this paper, initial results of soil moisture retrievals are presented. The left-hand circularly polarized-predominant satellite information was successfully used to retrieval soil moisture over the cropland. The right-hand circularly polarized components of the reflected signals were also received and examined. The GPS-derived soil moisture results, on the one hand, correctly represented the spatial variations of the soil moisture along the tracking of the flight; on the other hand, the results underestimated the ground-truth. Errors from the retrieval model and from the positioning and effects from the vegetation layer and from the atmospheric water vapor were the primary causes of the uncertainties in soil moisture retrievals using the airborne GNSS-R data. This airborne experimental campaign firstly investigate that China has the capability to perform airborne GNSS-R observation using the self-developed receiver, although the receiver developed by the NSSC needs to be further examined for its capability for spaceborne observation. The early findings of this study will provide illustrations for planned future airborne campaigns.
SNR Enhancement of Back Scattering Signals for Bistatic Radar Based on BeiDou GEO Satellites

Abstract:Using scattering signals of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) for target detection has become one of the research hotspots. This technology faces the difficulty of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) target echoes. Since BeiDou geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites provide the opportunity to form a bistatic radar with some advantages, such as fixed coverage area and quasi monostatic configuration to avoid the interference from the direct signals, the target echoes may have regular phases that are beneficial to SNR enhancement. This study uses BeiDou GEO satellites and ground fixed receivers to form a bistatic radar and analyzes the phase changes in the reflected signal caused by the target, then gives two methods for SNR enhancement corresponding to two applications: deformation monitoring and ship detection. This paper first introduces the basic signal processing including the intermediate frequency (IF) signal collector and the range compression in the software receiver, then describes the basic SNR enhancement method, i.e., increasing coherence integration time (CIT), and shows its limitation by two target cases: static metal reflector on the land and ships in the water. After that, this study provides an improved SNR enhancement method based on Doppler and range compensation in the moving ship detection case. The experiment shows that by the SNR enhancement, the SNRs of target echo signals in range/Doppler domain increase more than 4 dB on average. This study also demonstrates the bistatic radar’s potential for monitoring surface deformation.

A Coastal Experiment for GNSS-R Code-Level Altimetry Using BDS-3 New Civil Signals

Abstract:High temporal and spatial resolutions are the key advantages of the global navigation satellites system-reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique, while low precision and instabilities constrain its development. Compared with conventional Ku/C band nadir-looking radar altimetry, the precision of GNSS-R code-level altimetry is restricted by the smaller bandwidth and the lower transmitted power of the signals. Fortunately, modernized GNSS broadcast new open-available ranging codes with wider bandwidth. The Chinese BDS-3 system was built on 31 July 2020; its inclined geostationary orbit and medium circular orbit satellites provide B1C and B2a public navigation service signals in the two frequency bands of B1 and B2. In order to investigate their performance on GNSS-R code-level altimetry, a coastal experiment was conducted on 5 November 2020 at a trestle of Weihai in the Shandong province of China. The raw intermediate frequency data with a 62 MHz sampling rate were collected and post-processed to solve the sea surface height every second continuously for over eight hours. The precisions were evaluated using the measurements from a 26 GHz radar altimeter mounted on the same trestle near our GNSS-R setup. The results show that a centimeter-level accuracy of GNSS-R altimetry—based on B1C code after the application of the moving average—can be achieved, while for B2a code, the accuracy is about 10 to 20 cm.

Detection of Sea Ice Based on BeiDou-reflected Signals

Abstract:For preventing the effects of sea ice bring the serious negative impact on the maritime transport, a full-scale detection of sea ice should be performed. The BeiDou GEO satellites could provide stable geometry and better coverage in mid-and low-latitude region where most of the sea ice occur. Based on this consideration, this paper evaluates the usage of BeiDou GEO Satellites reflected signals for accurate real-time Earth observation to study the changes in the sea surface state through remote sensing. BeiDou GEO signals received after reflection from Bohai Bay were analyzed for their sea ice content. The results are in good agreement with the cluster center of the sea ice reflected correlation power and the sea water reflected correlation power. The average of the cluster center on the sea ice surface is much smaller than that on the sea water surface..

Abstract:BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) began to provide global services of positioning, navigation, and timing on July 31, 2020. The Real-time Kinematic (RTK) is one of the essential services for BDS' precise applications. In this contribution, a BDS-3 RTK model based on the constraint of the Wet component of Zenith Tropospheric Delay (WZTD) and the partial ambiguity resolution methods is provided, in which the impact of WZTD residuals caused by both horizontal distance and height is restrained. To evaluate the performance of such a BDS-3 RTK model, a set of triple-frequency multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite Systems vehicle-borne data is collected and processed. Results demonstrate that (1) the positioning accuracy of BDS-3 is decimeter-level to centimeter-level in terms of root mean square value while using single, dual, and triple frequency observations, which is generally close to that of GPS; (2) the positioning accuracy of BDS-3 RTK based on the new signals (B1C, B1C + B2a, and B1C + B2a + B3I) are higher than that using B1I and B3I signals; (3) the ambiguity resolution fixed rate of BDS-3 RTK is improved after applying the partial ambiguity resolution methods and WZTD constraint.

Abstract:The FengYun-3E Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) occultation sounder II (FY-3E GNOS II) was launched on 5 July 2021. For the first time, based on the new GNOS II sensor, this mission realizes radio occultation (RO) and reflectometry observations using the navigation signals from the third-generation BeiDou System (BDS-3), and it is hence important to assess and analyze the BDS-3 remote sensing performances relative to other systems. Here, we assessed FY-3E GNOS II RO atmospheric retrievals by inter-comparing with corresponding data from the NCEP FNL global atmospheric analysis and FY-3D GNOS mission. The GNOS RO data quality and consistency of the different FY-3 meteorological satellites, i.e., FY-3D and FY-3E, as well as different GNSS systems (GPS, BDS-2, BDS-3) were analyzed. We find that the FY-3E GNOS II RO data exhibit better quality than FY-3D GNOS, particularly in the number, penetration height toward surface, and global coverage by BDS RO profiles, due to the integration of BDS-2 and BDS-3. Additionally, comparing with co-located NCEP FNL analysis profiles, the mean difference (and standard deviation) of the FY-3E GNOS II RO atmospheric refractivity profile retrievals is found to be smaller than 0.2% (and 1%), in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, from 5 to 30 km, and remains consistent at this accuracy and precision level with the FY-3D GNOS RO data. These features provide clear evidence for a high utility of the new GNOS II RO data for weather and climate research and applications.

Abstract:The national Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) ground-based augmentation network (BGAN) of China is constructed with the existing GNSS observation resources of industrial sectors and local governments, based on the concept of joint building and sharing with sustainable development. This study provides a detailed introduction to the design, construction and operation of a meteorological application system based on BGAN, and validation of its water vapor products. BDS and GPS real-time observation of atmospheric water vapor is achieved nationwide in China and multi-GNSS applications. Through the application of multi-GNSS data and validation of the water vapor products from 2018 to 2020, the accuracy of precipitable water vapor (PWV) derived from BDS only is equivalent to that from GPS only. The root mean square error (RMSE) between them is about 2 mm with high correlation coefficient. Based on radiosonde data, the validation is conducted with the products of BDS-PWV, GPS-PWV, and Combined-PWV derived with multi-GNSS of BDS and GPS. The error characteristics of the three products show a consistent trend over the months. The bias is relatively small. The RMSE of the three products is in the range of 2.18–2.73 mm. The BDS-PWV has the largest RMSE, followed by GPS-PWV, and Combined-PWV has the smallest RMSE.
