Abstract:In this paper, we study a rescheduling problem in response to arrival of new jobs in single machine layout, where preventive maintenance should be determined. Preventive maintenance together with controllable processing time could alleviate the inherent deteriorating effect in manufacturing system. Processing sequence of original and new jobs, compression of each job, and position of maintenance should be optimized simultaneously with regards to total operational cost (job's total completion times, maintenance cost and compression cost) and total completion time deviation. An improved elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) has been proposed to solve the rescheduling problem. To address the key problem of balancing between exploration and exploitation, we hybridize differential evolution mutation operation with NSGA-II to enhance diversity, constitute high-quality initial solution based on assignment model for exploitation, and incorporate analytic property of non-dominated solutions for exploration. Finally computational study is designed by randomly generating various instances with regards to the problem size from given distributions. By use of existing performance indicators for convergence and diversity of Pareto fronts, we illustrate the effectiveness of the hybrid algorithm and the incorporation of domain knowledge into evolutionary optimization in rescheduling.

Abstract:Production scheduling and maintenance planning are two of the most important tasks in the modern manufacturing workshop. Meanwhile, due to the dynamic order arrival and real-time machine monitoring information updating, the integrated optimization of them becoming more complex and meaningful. Therefore, this study intends to address an adaptive flexible job-shop rescheduling problem with real-time order acceptance (ROA) and condition-based preventive maintenance (CBPM). More precisely, the main innovative works are described as follows: (1) a CBPM policy with both imperfect preventive maintenance (PM) and four inspection strategies is designed to find the optimal maintenance planning for each production machine; (2) a multi-objective optimization model is developed for the concerned problem; and (3) a hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (HMOEA) with hybrid initialization method, hybrid local search operators and adaptive rescheduling strategies is proposed. In the numerical simulation, the performance and competitiveness of the proposed CBPM policy are first demonstrated by comparing with other maintenance policies. Second, the effectiveness and superiority of parameter setting, order sorting rules, improved operators and overall performance of the proposed algorithm are verified by internal analysis of the algorithm. Third, an adaptive rescheduling strategy pool is constructed by running three rescheduling strategies on all rescheduling scenarios. Finally, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis is performed to illustrate the impact of several critical parameters on the adaptive rescheduling problem, and the results and comparisons show that the proposed HMOEA algorithm and order acceptance strategy have good robustness in most parameters.

Abstract:In the actual production, the insertion of new job and machine preventive maintenance (PM) are very common phenomena. Under these situations, a flexible job-shop rescheduling problem (FJRP) with both new job insertion and machine PM is investigated. First, an imperfect PM (IPM) model is established to determine the optimal maintenance plan for each machine, and the optimality is proven. Second, in order to jointly optimize the production scheduling and maintenance planning, a multiobjective optimization model is developed. Third, to deal with this model, an improved nondominated sorting genetic algorithm III with adaptive reference vector (NSGA-III/ARV) is proposed, in which a hybrid initialization method is designed to obtain a high-quality initial population and a critical-path-based local search (LS) mechanism is constructed to accelerate the convergence speed of the algorithm. In the numerical simulation, the effect of parameter setting on the NSGA-III/ARV is investigated by the Taguchi experimental design. After that, the superiority of the improved operators and the overall performance of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated. Next, the comparison of two IPM models is carried out, which verifies the effectiveness of the designed IPM model. Last but not least, we have analyzed the impact of different maintenance effects on both the optimal maintenance decisions and integrated maintenance-production scheduling schemes.

Abstract:Production scheduling and maintenance planning are two interactive factors in modern manufacturing system. However, at present, almost all studies ignore the impact of unpunctual maintenance activities on the integrated production and maintenance scheduling since the unavailabilities of repairmen are dynamically changed, e.g., repairmen increase, decrease and their unavailable intervals update. Under these contexts, this paper addresses a novel integrated optimization problem of condition-based preventive maintenance (CBPM) and production rescheduling with multi-phase processing speed selection and dynamic repairman assignment. More precisely, (1) a novel multi-phase-multi-threshold CBPM policy with remaining-useful-life-based inspection and multi-phase processing speed selection is proposed to obtain some selectable maintenance plans for each production machine; (2) a hybrid rescheduling strategy (HRS) that includes three rescheduling strategies is designed for responding to the dynamic changes of repairman; and (3) an adaptive clustering- and Meta-Lamarckian learning-based bi-population co-evolutionary algorithm (ACML-BCEA) is developed to deal with the concerned problem. In the numerical simulations, the effectiveness of designed operators and proposed ACML-BCEA algorithm is first verified. Next, the superiority and competitiveness of the proposed CBPM policy and HRS are separately demonstrated by comparing with other CBPM policies and rescheduling strategies. After that, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis is performed to analyze the effect of optional range of processing speed, skill level of selectable repairmen and total number of processing phases, and the analyzing results show that these factors all have a significant impact on the integrated optimization.

Abstract:Most production scheduling problems, including standard flexible job shop scheduling problems, assume that machines are continuously available. However, in most cases, due to preventive maintenance activities, machines may not be available for a certain time. Meanwhile, in the entire workshop production process, the transportation process of workpieces cannot be ignored. Therefore, the impact of transportation on the production planning should be considered in the scheduling process. To consider both preventive maintenance and transportation processes in the flexible job shop scheduling problem, this paper proposes a flexible job shop scheduling problem considering preventive maintenance activities and transportation processes and establishes a multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling model optimizing the total energy consumption and total makespan. Furthermore, a multi-region division sampling strategy-based multi-objective optimization algorithm integrated with a genetic algorithm and a differential evolution algorithm (MDSS-MOGA-DE) is proposed to solve the model. In the proposed algorithm, a multi-region division sampling strategy and two evaluation functions are utilized to improve the diversity of solutions. In addition, this paper combines a genetic operation and a differential operation to further enhance the search ability of the algorithm. The validity of the algorithm is verified by a real case. The computational results reveal that the proposed model and algorithm obtain appropriate results and have the potential to be applied to other similar problems.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability, Ahead of Print. This paper investigates multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling considering maintenance activities. The condition-based maintenance strategy is used to reduce machines breakdown. After maintenance activities are completed, the machine degradation model's parameters are updated using Bayesian inference to make it more realistic. A novel multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is designed to address the multi-criteria scheduling problem. An innovative insertion algorithm is proposed in this paper to balance production plan and maintenance activities. According to the experimental results, the designed evolutionary algorithm performs better than the other two traditional algorithms, and the insertion approach can reduce the impact of maintenance activities on production plan by up to 200%.

Abstract:This paper proposes a multi-objective integrated optimization model of production scheduling and machine maintenance to find the optimal production sequence and preventive maintenance (PM) decisions. This model considers the setup time, the learning-forgetting effects and the multi-degradation effects. The setup time and the learning-forgetting effects are associated with jobs' similarities and PM decisions. The multi-degradation effects including machine deterioration, failure rate and quality characteristic loss determine the stochastic nature of the objectives. A hybrid maintenance strategy combining imperfect PM and minimal repair (MR) is adopted to effectively reduce the failure frequency and improve the processing quality. Then, the multi-objective solution is simplified by normalizing cost, time and utilization. The local search and the elitism strategy are conducted to avoid the solutions falling into local optimum and losing the best chromosome during evolutions. Finally, a case study of automobile engine manufacturing shows that our proposed model can reduce the total maintenance costs by 27%, shorten the total processing time by 3%, as well as improve the machine utilization by 3%.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of machine performance, the multifunction machine has gradually become the first choice of many enterprises. Due to the usage and wearing of the machine, the successive operating times will decrease, while the consecutive maintenance durations will increase. Under these contexts, this paper focus on the joint optimization of preventive maintenance and flexible job-shop rescheduling with processing speed selection, and the dynamic arrival of the new machine is considered to enhance productivity. Specifically, (1) a bivariate maintenance policy considering processing speed is proposed to develop a reasonable maintenance plan for each machine; and (2) for evaluating, responding and optimizing the dynamic scheduling problem, a multi-objective optimization model, two rescheduling strategies and a bi-population cooperative evolutionary algorithm are separately constructed. In numerical experiments, the Taguchi method is first employed to set the parameters of the proposed algorithm. Second, the superiority of the proposed migration rescheduling strategy is demonstrated by comparing complete rescheduling strategy. Third, the effectiveness of the improved operators and the proposed algorithm is verified by algorithm comparison. Next, the benefits of the selectable processing speed are proven by comparing with the nominal processing speed. Finally, a sensitivity analysis on the processing speed optional range is performed.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms approach to solution of the jobshop scheduling problems (JSP) is studied. Different from the existing genetic algorithm approach to JSP, the approach proposed in this paper is based upon the mixed integer model of the JSP, and casts the JSP as a mixed integer linear or nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. With genetic algorithm and evolution strategy, the procedures for solution of MINLP problems are presented respectively. Constraints of the MINLP problems are dealt with easily by using the penalty function method and the Deb approach. At the end of the paper, computer simulations for a numerical example are made, and the results show that the proposed approach is effective.

Abstract:In current manufacturing systems, production is a very dynamic process with many unexpected events and continuously emerging new requirements. Researchers have developed a wide variety of procedures and heuristics for solving these scheduling problems, called rescheduling. Most proposed approaches are often derived by making simplifying assumptions. As a consequence, the approach is not in accordance with functioning of the real manufacturing system. Such approaches are frequently not suitable and flexible enough to respond efficiently to fast changes in the environment. In this paper, we focus on a practical solution of rescheduling by using mathematical modeling and interactive adaptive-weight evolutionary algorithm. We extend the rescheduling problem to a multi-objective optimization model. We formulate several objectives for corresponding requirement, such as due date, capability, transportation cost, set up cost and available resources etc. We can select the necessary one objective or some objectives for the manufacturing flexibility. However, for traditional approaches of multi-objective optimization problems, researchers focused on the solutions diversity. For the multi-objective rescheduling problem (moJSRS), we have to consider not only the solutions diversity, but also adapting the objectives alternative. We will propose an interactive adaptive-weight evolutionary algorithm with adapting the characteristics of a multi-objective job shop rescheduling problem. Some practical test instances will be demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:A dynamic FJSP aiming at scheduling stability and robustness was studied.Firstly,an optimization mathematical model was proposed based on scheduling stability and robustness.Second-ly,by analyzing characteristics of dynamic FJSP,a job arrival generator and a predictive maintenance generator of machine breakdown were presented.In each rescheduling points,periodic and event driv-en rescheduling strategies were employed,and a complete rescheduling strategy combined with right-shift rescheduling strategy was proposed.In order to preserve the good characteristics of paternal gen-erations,an improved differential evolution algorithm was designed to solve the dynamic FJSP.The validity of the proposed strategies and algorithm was verified by instances.

Abstract:For the integrated optimization of job-shop production scheduling and predictive maintenance, this paper fully considers such constraints as product delivery time and changing machine failure rate, and establishes a multi-objective optimization model aiming to minimize the processing cost and the product processing time. The model includes the changing machine failure rate into the integrated optimization of job-shop production scheduling and predictive maintenance, and enables the prediction of the machine state according to the processing time of the current job, laying the basis for the decision-making of the machine activity and the reasonable and effective production planning. In addition, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA)-II was designed to solve the proposed model. The algorithm performance was improved through the operator crossover and mutation by the simulated binary crossover algorithm (SBX). The proposed strategy was verified through a case study.

Abstract:The integrated problem of preventive maintenance and job scheduling has drawn much attention during the past several decades. However, few researches have taken both the operating condition (OC) of jobs and imperfect maintenance (IM) into account. The OC of jobs can impact the degradation speed of machines; hence, the expected completion time of jobs. This research considers a single machine non-preemptive earliness-tardiness job scheduling problem, takes the sum of the earliness-tardiness penalty cost and maintenance cost as the objective, proposes an integrated model of job scheduling and PM considering both OC and IM. A small-scale example conducted by a total enumeration method is presented to reveal the necessity of considering the OC and IM.

Abstract:Nowadays, the make-to-order (MTO) production has gradually become a new manufacturing trend, and the real-time arrival of orders has brought great challenges to order acceptance, production scheduling and maintenance planning in the actual production. Therefore, in this study, we focus on the integrated optimization of real-time order acceptance and flexible job-shop rescheduling with multi-level imperfect maintenance constraints. More precisely, (1) a multi-level imperfect maintenance model with minimal repair (MR), preventive maintenance (PM), overhaul maintenance (OM) and replacement is designed for each production machine, and the optimality is derived; (2) an integrated multi-objective optimization model is developed to characterize the concerned problem; and (3) an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm III with adaptive reference vector (INSGA-III/ARV) is proposed to deal with the problem. In the numerical simulation, the effect of different order sorting rules is first analyzed. Second, the effectiveness of improved operators is demonstrated by internal analysis of the proposed algorithm. Third, the superiority and competitiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing with the variants of five state-of-the-art algorithms. Fourth, the benefits of both the designed multi-level imperfect maintenance model and real-time order acceptance and scheduling (ROAS) strategy are proved by contrasting with other two traditional maintenance models and all order acceptance and scheduling (AOAS) strategy, respectively. Finally, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis is performed to illustrate the impact of several key parameters on the integrated optimization model.

Abstract:Effective resource scheduling and machine maintenance are two important interactive factors to improve prefabricated component productions. However, previous studies focused on machine maintenance without simultaneously considering stochastic resource scheduling, or studied job scheduling but neglected the resource constraint and machine availability. This paper explores the interaction between resource scheduling and machine maintenance to optimize the maintenance decisions and human resources in the prefabricated component production process. To solve this problem, a new integrated optimization model with aim of minimizing the uncertain project duration under the cost constraint is formulated. A differential evolution algorithm is designed by incorporating the simulation method. A real-life example of prefabricated walls is used to demonstrate the significance of jointly optimizing stochastic resource scheduling and machine maintenance, and analyzes the effectiveness of related parameters on the production system. Related results provide a new perspective to simultaneously consider multiple factors in the production process for future research.

Abstract:This paper deals with the scheduling problem on deteriorated single machine system with non-resumable jobs. Considering the preventive maintenance within flexible time-window, this paper proposes a mixed integer planning model. A greedy heuristic algorithm is proposed in solving the scheduling problem, and the comparison with Cplex shows that the heuristic algorithm can solve this scheduling problem with acceptable CPU time and accuracy.

Abstract:This paper investigates an integrated optimisation problem of production scheduling and preventive maintenance (PM) in a two-machine flow shop with time to failure of each machine subject to a Weibull probability distribution. The objective is to find the optimal job sequence and the optimal PM decisions before each job such that the expected makespan is minimised. To investigate the value of integrated scheduling solution, computational experiments on small-scale problems with different configurations are conducted with total enumeration method, and the results are compared with those of scheduling without maintenance but with machine degradation, and individual job scheduling combined with independent PM planning. Then, for large-scale problems, four genetic algorithm (GA) based heuristics are proposed. The numerical results with several large problem sizes and different configurations indicate the potential benefits of integrated scheduling solution and the results also show that proposed GA-based heuristics are efficient for the integrated problem.

Abstract:To secure a larger market share in the dynamically evolving personalized market demand, enterprises have to adopt a more flexible production mode. In this context, the implementation of parallel production with multiple product types necessitates frequent switching between different products, imposing elevated requirements on machine fault-free operation and stable production. There is a compelling motivation to investigate the joint optimization of the flexible job shop scheduling problem and preventive maintenance (FJSSP-PM). However, existing research has primarily focused on utilizing predetermined maintenance as inputs for optimizing production scheduling, while overlooking the uncertain maintenance requirements of machines during the production process. Therefore, this paper proposes a two-stage joint optimization model to simultaneously address three subproblems: machine assignment, operation sequencing, and maintenance arrangement. Specifically, the first stage involves constructing a mathematical model for the FJSSP to minimize penalties for tardiness and workload balancing. Subsequently, a comprehensive failure rate model is developed to determine maintenance requirements for machines with production-dependent failure behavior, particularly under high-frequency production switching scenarios. Furthermore, a feedback-updated strategy is proposed to achieve synchronous optimization of production and maintenance activities in an economically and operationally efficient manner. Given the complexity of the problem, a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm is designed to effectively handle large-scale cases. The effectiveness of the proposed model in terms of cost-savings has been verified compared with existing relevant methods.

Abstract:Preventive maintenance and task scheduling are both crucial activities in industrial practice. Although they are interdependent and mutually influential, most existing studies typically analyze them separately. In this paper, an integrated framework of preventive maintenance planning and task scheduling is explored. On one hand, while most scholars focus on the system as a whole in scheduling studies, we further take into account the degradation and maintenance of multiple units during the task scheduling process. On the other hand, instead of only using "direct replacement" as the main maintenance method, we further consider the repairability of the unit by incorporating imperfect maintenance effects into the maintenance modeling. Additionally, the lifecycle partitioning method is proposed to analyze the maintenance groups for multiple units at the completion of scheduling tasks and their corresponding probabilities. Based on this foundation, an integrated decision model is established with the preventive maintenance threshold and scheduling task sequence as decision variables to minimize the total weighted expected completion time. Finally, a novel genetic algorithm based on hybrid encoding is proposed, and the effectiveness of integrated decision-making was validated using a practical example.

Abstract:The prolonged operation of machines in the production process can lead to continuous deterioration or even failure, and the necessary maintenance measures can alleviate the above negative effects. For this reason, this study investigates a joint optimization problem of single-machine production and preventive maintenance (PM) considering linear deterioration effects. The objective is to obtain an integrated sequence of degrading jobs and PM activities in order to simultaneously minimize the makespan and the total cost. Based on the problem characteristics, an adaptive PM strategy is first designed. To efficiently solve the problem, an improved multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (IMOEA/D) is tailored, where the biased-distribution weight vector is proposed to enhance the search capability at both ends of the Pareto front. Five instances are used to evaluate the performance of the customized IMOEA/D and two classical multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. Numerical studies show that the IMOEA/D can substantially improve the hypervolume metric, the maximum spread metric, and the distributivity of the Pareto front at a slight sacrifice of the spacing metric.
