Abstract:The study of multi-state dc–dc power conversion techniques is restricted by the complicated inner switching behaviors. This paper presents a general and unified transient analysis for various sorts of multi-state dc–dc converters from a viewpoint of their system energy characteristics. With the applications to the boost converters, the proposed analytical method has indicated its advantages of high convenience and practicability to the multi-state converters. The generalized concepts of system energy parameters of dc–dc converters are introduced and applied to the transient analysis. Consequently, the expressions of system model parameters of multi-state dc–dc converters are deduced. The new 2nd order transfer functions are obtained to describe the large- and small-signal mathematical models accurately. The model simulation and experimental results are provided to support the theoretical analysis. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The dynamical behavior of temperature is becoming a critical design consideration for the power electronics, because they are referred as "thermal cycling" which is the root cause of fatigues in the power electronics devices, and thus is closely related to the reliability of the converter. It is well understood that the loading of power devices are disturbed by many factors of the converter system like grid, control, environment, etc., which emerge at various time-constants. However, the corresponding thermal response to these disturbances is still unclear, especially the transient behaviors until achieving the steady-state. As a result, a systematic modelling approach is proposed in this paper, which includes the large signal models of the converter system with both electrical and thermal parts, and the corresponding transient models under frequency domain are also extracted. Based on the proposed models, the bandwidths of the loss or thermal response to major disturbances in the converter system can be analytically mapped, enabling more advanced tools to investigate the transient characteristics of loss and thermal dynamics in the power electronics devices.

Abstract:Power electronic circuit is a switching system. And its continuous time variables mutually affect with discrete events, so it is also a typical hybrid system. Based on hybrid system theory, uniform hybrid system models are established for second-order DC-DC converters working under continuous current mode (CCM). Direct Method of Lyapunov is used to analyze stability of the system and a new sliding mode control strategy is derived. Simulation and experimental results on Boost converter are given to validate the strategy. A suggestion is presented for practical use. So comparing with the traditional averaged or linearized models, hybrid models can be more precise in theory because no approximation is introduced. It also helps to better analysis and control of power electronic system.

Abstract:The development of bifurcation is reviewed and the research status of bifurcation phenomena in DC-DC converter is summarized.The paper also introduces the basic theory of static bifurcation and dynamic bifurcation and three modeling methods in common use: the state-space average method,the frequency mapping method and the sampled-data method.The sampled-data method is more systematic and more accurate than the others.Finally,the simulation and experiment of an example explain the validity of the above modeling methods.

Abstract:The accurate transient modeling of faulty DC microgrids is the basis of fault detection, fault location and fault isolation. AC/DC and DC/DC converters keeps their normal control strategies until the fault is detected. However, in existing researches, the influence of the control effect of converters is normally being ignored in the transient characteristics of DC microgrids. This omission reduces the accuracy of the faulty transient model. Thus, this paper proposes a transient modeling method for faulty DC microgrid considering control effect of different DC/AC and DC/DC converters. Firstly, the transient characteristics of different converters (including voltage source converter, boost circuit, bidirectional chopper circuit and buck circuit) are analyzed. And then, the faulty transient model of ring-type DC microgrid is established. Furthermore, the correctness of proposed modeling method is verified by comparing with the Control-hardware-in-loop (CHIL) test system. The results show that the proposed method can not only improve the accuracy of transient analysis of faulty DC microgrid, but also enhance the calculation efficiency.

Abstract:The steady state and dynamic performance of a switched capacitor DC-DC converter are analyzed by the state space equation set. The DC-DC converter is based on a multi-stage switched capacitor charge pump structure with subsection conversion ratio. Optimal methods are also presented on system control methodology (current control and pulse frequency modulation) and frequency compensation. By using those optimal methods, a switched capacitor DC-DC converter with high efficiency, low output ripple and low cost is realized, the transistor-level simulation results meet the power management chip requirements of the portable electronic devices.

Abstract:The generalization form of energy balance (ED) model for voltage mode DC/DC converters operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is presented in this paper based on energy conservation principle. The stability condition is given at the energy point of view based on ED model. The condition is helpful to stability estimation of various parameter variations that were analyzed separately before. The generalization ED model and stability estimation condition can be applied to other types of power converters in DCM. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:The distributed multi-converter system is a typical application and is more popular in applications such as aircrafts, spacecrafts and also ships. Each single converter module is designed stable. However, in the system level, the stability is still a big issue due to the complex interaction among the power converters. The small signal stability of the cascaded system is deeply studied, while the large signal stability issue in cascade system is still not well addressed. Under the assumption that the load converter works as a constant power load(CPL). This paper analyzes the relationships between parameters of the feeder converter and the stability of the cascaded system. Design criterion is proposed. The maximum CPL value is also derived from the calculation. This value can provide criterion for matching the feeder and the downstream converters. Instead of trial and error, the efficiency of design can be greatly increased.

Abstract:The electromagnetic transient process is the key point in the design and analysis of high power converters. From the views of electromagnetic energy conversion, transient commutation loop, and system reliability, this paper proposed a series of analysis and control techniques for electromagnetic transient processes in high power electronic conversion systems. The following sub-topics were discussed: transient process modeling and application characteristics of high power devices, extractions and influences of stray parameters, electromagnetic pulse transient processes, and transient energy balancing relations. Quantitative relations were set up between device and equipment, lumped parameters and distributed parameters, control and main circuit, respectively. This paper also described analysis and control methods such as systematic safe operation area, transient circuit topology, power pulse modulation, and energy-balance control. Application examples indicate that the proposed techniques can significantly improve the performances and reliability of high power electronic equipment.

Abstract:The transient behavior of DC systems have much influence on the stability of AC systems under the background of strong DC and weak AC. The strong-nonlinearity of DC controllers and the flexible switches of control mode make it difficult to evaluate the transient stability of AC/DC systems using direct method by constructing energy function. From the view of network energy, the algorithm of branches potential energy uses the manifestation of critical branches during transient process to reflect the stability of systems. Based on the mechanism of coupling impact between AC and DC systems, this thesis builds the state space model including the electric variables of coupling point, and gets the stable area of AC/DC systems using the Lyapunov function. The critical energy can be got to recognize the instability when the voltage phase difference of critical branches reach the boundary of stable area. Time domain simulation is used to verify the effectiveness of the evaluation method.

Abstract:In order to improve the operation performance of DC power system in both steady and transient states, in this paper, a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) interfaced by proposed two-stage and switches shared three-port converter (TPC) with virtual impedance based power sharing control are studied. The modelling of the TPC and the control system are conducted, and the generalized state-space averaging method is used to establish the model of the three-port converter. Furthermore, the analysis on the influence of the dynamic characteristics and stability of system control loop due to the change of virtual impedance parameters is presented. Meanwhile, simulation and experimental verifications are implemented. The results show that the proposed virtual impedance based power sharing control in the TPC can be achieved and the stability of the system can be guaranteed.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved analytical model for the study of steady-state performance of droop-controlled VSC-MTDC systems. When power disturbances occur, such as those imposed by normal changes in power settings and converter outages, the powers of the converters with droop control may hit their limits and hence such converters no longer contribute to power sharing, which should be paid special attention when analyzing the impacts of power disturbances on the performance of multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) systems. Based on the bisection algorithm and superposition principle, the proposed analytical model provides an easy way to estimate the results of power distributions, dc voltage deviations, and power loss variations of the MTDC system taking converter outage and converter overload into account. Simulations of a modified New England 39-bus system incorporating a four-terminal MTDC system are carried out for validating the proposed analytical model.

Abstract:Under the influence of high speed power switch device, electromagnetic interference (EMI) affects heavily the normal operation of the buck-boost circuit in hybrid energy storage system (HESS). In this paper, the working principle of the buck-boost converter in hybrid energy storage system is analyzed, and the relationship between common-mode (CM) voltage and the voltage of switching device is obtained. By analyzing the frequency spectrum of the voltage of switching device, the relationship between the switching characteristics and the system conducted electromagnetic interference is proposed, and the prediction model of the conducted electromagnetic interference for hybrid energy storage system is established. In addition, the mechanism of ringing and overshoot during switching time of switching devices is studied and reduced by the method of adding capacitor, and experimental results validate the analysis method.

Abstract:The work in this paper is applied to the Zhangbei Power grid. In the flexible direct current (DC) power system, the fault current rises extremely fast when a DC fault occurs. The requirements for the peak of breaking current and fault energy absorption of DC circuit breakers (DCCBs) increase linearly, which significantly increases the cost of the equipment. Therefore, in order to reduce the design difficulty of DCCBs, this paper proposes a strategy to control energy after the fault occurs. Firstly, the energy dimension is added on the basis of the traditional vector control of MMC, which constitutes a three-dimensional energy direct control. Subsequently, the architectures of energy fluctuation control and feedforward control are proposed. The influencing mechanisms for the peak fault current, peak fault voltage and energy dissipation are analyzed. Finally, the simulation of energy fluctuation control and feedforward control is constructed on PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulation results show that the energy fluctuation control is obviously better than the conventional three-dimensional energy control, and the feedforward energy control is further improved on this basis. Compared with the conventional vector control, the peak energy is reduced by 45.43% and the peak current is reduced by 25.39%, which helps to simplify the equipment design and reduce the equipment cost.

Abstract:Switching mode is the basic mode of electromagnetic energy conversion in power electronics, meanwhile switching characteristics become the key point. From this perspective, this paper presents the multi-time scale transient models of power semiconductor devices, in which different models are adapted to describe the switching transient process corresponding to different time scales. In addition, under discrete event-driven simulation system, this paper presents the connection and switching principles between multi-time scale models, so that such models can be employed in simulation of power electronics converters. As shown in this paper, all parameters of the multi-time scale models can be extracted from datasheet directly. It is significant in design and analysis of power electronics systems.

Abstract:The conventional modelling methods for the multistate boost converter are usually restricted by its complicated switching behaviours. This paper presents a novel mathematical modelling method for the multi-state boost converter from a viewpoint of system energy characteristics. The generalized concepts of system energy parameters of dc/dc converters are introduced to the modelling process, which deduce the expressions of system model parameters for the multi-state boost converter consequently. The new 2(nd) order functions are obtained to describe the converter. With the applications to the examples, the proposed method shows the advantages of high convenience and practicability to the multistate boost converters. Both the model simulation and experimental results are provided to support the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:DC-DC switching power converter is a typical piecewise-smooth dynamical system. In this circuit system, all kinds of bifurcations such as the period doubling bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation, Border collision bifurcation and chaotic motion can be generated under some working and parameter conditions. In this paper, the main progresses on the study nonlinear dynamics behaviors such as bifurcation and chaos are reviewed in DC-DC switching power converter are reviewed. Three modeling methods, including the discrete nonlinear map, piecewise-smooth model, average model, are introduced. The bifurcation characteristics and mechanisms, and the route to chaos are analyzed. Furthermore, based on our primary research work, the necessity of chaos control and corresponding methods are discussed for DC-DC switching power converter. Finally, from the point of view of applications, some future research areas are pointed out.

Abstract:In order to better implement the transient models of multi-time scale switch in power electronics converter simulation analysis, a simulation method of multiple-timescale models is presented in this paper, and the adaptability of the transient model is illustrated by experimental results. Different applications for multiple-timescale models are also discussed according to the specific switching characteristics reflected by different timescale transient models. In addition, under discrete state event-driven (DSED) simulation system, this paper presents the connection and switching principles between multi-time scale models. As a result, such models can be employed in all-time simulation of power electronics converters.
