Abstract:Rotary micromotors, a type of micro devices, are particularly critical for advancing micro-fabrication technology in converting energy into micronanoscale mechanical motions for micronanomachines and micronanofactories. Especially, in microfluidic channel the rotary micromotors have the potential to energy supply, sensing and mixing applications. Here, we have demonstrated a real rotary device in microfluidic channel, which exhibited a flow-driven capability, indicating environment kinetic energy was transferred to rotatable mechanical energy. As a typically three-dimentional micromotor, microturbine was fabricated by laser direct-writing in microchannel, in that the blades were able to rotate under liquid flow. The rotating speed is linear increasing with velocity of flow, indicating a sensing ability. The rotating direction behavior in microchannel is different to that in bulk liquid, where tilt direction of blades is dominant element. Due to edge effect the rotatable direction of blades was dependent to flow direction. Further combining with conductive coils or magnetic components, the rotating micro-motor will work as the energy supply or mixing micro-devices in microchannel.
